Local Teens Earn Prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County recently celebrated local Girl Scouts who have earned the prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award during the annual Silver Award Ceremony and Breakfast, which included a keynote address by the Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Labor Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Rosalie Drago. The Silver Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by each recipient as they join an elite group of young women who earn the highest Girl Scout honor a Cadette Scout can achieve. Members of the Huntington Service Unit 612 Harborwoods/ Centerport Unit 613; Julia Fasciano, Tatiana Marr, Taylor Busch, Jacqueline O’Grady, Maeve O’Connor, Megan Sully, Rebecca Stawecki, Emma Rothleder, Kylie Meehan, Brianna Mauro, Daniella Rehren, Ava Haddad, Louise Hartough, Megan

LaMena, Nora Truncale, Emma Barbo, Eva Barbo, Gabriela Solis, Ellie Schwartz, Kali Marketos, Riley Perinchief, Madison Vega, Sophia Vitevitch, Olivia LoBue, Maggie Brchnel, Elliot Baravarian, and Elizabeth Benavides were among those acknowledged for this great accomplishment.

“The Silver Award is the highest distinction that Girl Scouts in this age range can earn,” said GSSC President & CEO Tammy Severino. “It takes a great deal of responsibility, dedication, and confidence for these Girls to complete these important projects as they create a notable positive impact in their community. I applaud these girls’ commitment to making a difference and joining a highly distinguished group of accomplished young women.”

To achieve a Silver Award, Girl Scouts each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them and would greatly

benefit the world around them. To be eligible for a Silver Award, each recipient must complete their Cadette Journey before beginning their Silver Award project. To meet the Girl Scout Silver

Award requirements, each candidate must complete at least 50 hours toward their project.

Girls in grades 6-8 begin their Silver Award journey by identifying a civic or social issue they care about. Next, a Girl Scout builds a team to support her project with the mission to create a positive impact in her community by addressing an issue she feels passionate about. Through the process, Silver Award Girl Scouts build invaluable problemsolving, organizational, and leadership skills while educating and inspiring others.

Troop 954 members Julia Fasciano, Tatiana Marr and Taylor Busch repurposed a former preschool playground that was closed due to the pandemic into a community herb and vegetable garden.

Troop 1619 members Jacqueline O’Grady, Maeve O’Connor, Megan Sully, and Rebecca Stawecki raised awareness about the importance of sea life and how they are affected by ocean pollution. They installed a beach recycling center at Crab Meadow Beach.

Emma Rothleder, Kylie Meehan, Brianna Mauro, and Daniella Rehren raised awareness about the contribution of women in various fields to society and to inspire young women to pursue their goals; as their group researched, educated and created a display.

Ava Haddad, Louise Hartough, Megan LaMena, and Nora Truncale built a greeting card station for a senior living facility. They collected hundreds of blank cards and spent hours with the seniors, completing greeting cards, connecting seniors with friends and family.

Elliot Baravarian, and Elizabeth Benavides raised awareness about the importance of bats and how to help with bat conservation. They also raised funds to build and donate two bat houses to a local horse stable.

For their project, Troop 286 members Emma Barbo and Eva Barbo made sustainable videos to inform dog owners on a variety of pet-related topics. They also made and donated “Adopt Me” bandannas to the Huntington Animal shelter.

Troop 192 members Gabriela Solis, Ellie Schwartz, Kali Marketos, Riley Perinchief and Madison Vega made over 65 blankets for residents in a nursing home.

Troop 2597 members Sophia Vivevitch, Olivia Lobue, and Maggie Brchnel created a website featuring the history of the Elwood Schools. Showcasing the building and functioning of the Little Red Schoolhouse and highlights interviews with former students and historic photos.

Race To Save The Sea Turtles! 2023 Paddle Battle LI Event Saturday, July 29th

The New York Marine Rescue Center is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the 2023 Paddle Battle LI Event on Saturday, July 29th along the Peconic River in Riverhead, NY.

It’s a race to save the Sea Turtles! This family friendly event includes a 2.5-mile amateur race and a 5-mile competitive race course. First place medals will be offered to winners in each category, for each class and distance. We also have our Casual Paddle! This is not a race it’s just a great way for family and friends to get together and paddle casually on the beautiful Peconic River!

There is also a great opportunity for companies, organizations and unions to participate in the “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.” This 2.5 mile stand up paddle board and kayak race

designed for teams of four competitors to compete against one another for the Team Challenge trophy. The team with the overall best combined time will take home the championship trophy along with the bragging rights of winning the 2023 “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.”

All proceeds will go directly to the NY Marine Rescue Center, a not-forprofit 501c3 to help them save the Sea Turtles!

Registration starts at 7:30am on the Peconic Waterfront – Entry fees are $95/pp before the race day, or $105 on the event day. Rental canoes and kayaks are available for $40. Life vests are required; all participants must wear their own PFD (personal floatation device) during the race. Complete pre-registration details are at PaddleBattleLI.com

or find us on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/ PaddleBattleLongIsland.

In the event of severe weather, Paddle Battle LI will be held on Sunday, July 30.

Insurance

Tips And Information

Article provided by Ken Marcus and Mitchell Barber

Do I need Flood insurance?

You’re not going to be visiting neighborhoods around West Point any time soon. Nor will you see a bucolic Montpelier, Vermont this summer. Both of these communities…. and many more….. have witnessed unprecedented flooding over the last few weeks. They are not in flood zones nor are they low lying areas. And, incidentally, Homeowner insurance will not pay for losses.

You may not live in a flood zone. This does not mean you can’t be flooded or that you are adequately insured. One-in-five floods do not happen in a flood zone. The flooding up north is not such an anomaly as you might think. Remember, NYC witnessed such a flood in the spring of 2022. Basement apartments flooded. People even drowned. Suffolk had such flooding on August 13, 2014.

Long Island’s population has doubled since a category 3 hurricane hit in 1938. The results then were catastrophic. What are you chances of being unscathed when the next hurricane hits? Are you living on what was then flooded land? Are your sewers capable of flushing a 4” or 8” rain?

As unusual weather events become the norm, should you research whether or not you might need or want Flood Insurance? What does it protect you against? How expensive is it? Who sells it? Call and ask your insurance agent.

Harborfields High School Career Transition Class Raises $1,200 For Autism

2554. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees more than 250 parks, historic sites, recreational trails, golf courses, boat launches and more, which in 2022 were visited by record 79.5 million people. For more information on any of these recreation areas, call 518-474-0456 or visit www. parks.ny.gov, connect with us on Facebook, or follow on Instagram and Twitter.

The career transition class at Harborfields High School raised $1,200 for the Nassau Suffolk Autism Society of America by selling dog biscuits, T-shirts, greeting cards, jewelry and candy throughout this past school year. These studentrun businesses provide them with opportunities to apply what they learn in

the classroom to real-world experiences. Guided by teacher Rhonda Lebit, the students are responsible for making all of the items, packaging, selling and managing our business bank account.

A parent-run organization serving over 4,000 families on Long Island, NSASA works to support individuals

with autism in local communities. Through its fundraising efforts, NSASA provides free educational, social, and recreational opportunities to families touched by autism. NSASA also provides grants for technology, classroom materials and community outings to local school programs that serve children with autism.

Local Scout Presented With Boy Scout Jewish Religious Emblem

The first eleven points of the Boy Scout Law must be demonstrated in order to go from one rank to the next, including Eagle.  The 12th point --”A Scout is Reverent”-“-- can be demonstrated in a variety of ways including the earning of the religious award of the Scout’s individual faith.

As with all the religious emblems, these are not an award for Scouting skills, but rather an emblem authorized by the Boy Scouts of America to be worn on the Scout’s uniform after satisfactory completion of the necessary requirements.  This award, earned by Jewish Boy Scouts 11 to 18, requires study concerned with home observance, synagogue worship, Jewish study, the American Jewish community,

world Jewry, and a service project. It is one of the three recognitions earned as a Boy Scout that can be worn on their adult volunteer uniform – the religious emblem, the Arrow of Light (as a Webelos Scout) and the Eagle Scout knots.

In observance of the 12th point of the Scout Law, Fort Salonga resident Eagle Scout Rebecca Aronberg of Troop 539G of Kings Park was presented with her Ner Tamid Emblem on May 30, 2023 at her final troop meeting of the season, held at the troop’s weekly meeting place – William T. Rogers Middle School (Kings Park), by JCOS PR Chair Phyllis Stein.  Eagle Scout Rebecca Aronberg was presented with a medal,

Accessing Schooling Options

(NAPSI)—Parents are more optimistic about their children’s academic, emotional, and social development and they increasingly support school choice according to EdChoice,

which wants all K–12 students to access the schooling options—public, private, charter, homeschooling or other—best for them. Learn more at www.edchoice.org.

Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.

(Cheers to that.)

Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.

Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.
