A GREAT TIME TO GROW.

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com

Making The Connection By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Fate is a funny thing. You either believe in it or you don’t, and you either allow it to dictate your path in life or you spend the majority of your time fighting against it. The choice is yours… or is it? People seem to have a habit of saying that things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately apparent at the moment, if ever. Timing, circumstance…

whatever the case may be, events have a way of working themselves out in such a way as to follow the trail of cause and effect, of coincidence and irony. And there we are in the middle, left trying to sort it all out. Sure, there are situations you may read more into, in your vain search for some kind of mystical, magical, cosmic connection, but others… well others you just simply can’t deny. They just are, blatantly and undeniably, obvious

for all but the most cynical among us to see – and to appreciate. If only we could see these instances for what they are, while they are occurring. Perhaps we could save ourselves a certain degree of unnecessary stress and aggravation, anguish and upheaval. If only… unfortunately, though, it often takes hindsight to gain that type of perspective. Life as we know it is, quite simply, just never that crystal clear.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) has announced that Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident and a physical education teacher at Harborfields High School, will lead a team of swimmers in the 10th Annual Distant Memories Swim on Monday, August 5, in order to draw attention to this devastating disease that impacts over 60,000 families here on Long Island. Opening ceremonies are expected to begin promptly at 10 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will take to the water at 11 a.m. Mr. Proctor and his teammates will start out at Asharoken Beach and swim across the bay to Knollwood Beach — a distance of approximately 2.5 nautical miles (less than 3 miles). The swim will also help raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. through sponsorships and corporate donors. The goal is to raise $20,000 to help support services and programs for Long Island families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. “Bryan is a champion for those with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. He is a role model for the youth of our country,” states Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/ Chief Executive Officer for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center. “He has continuously expressed the

sentiment that he wants to raise awareness about this deadly disease and help families who live on Long Island.” “It is my hope that substantial funds will be raised to assist Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center in providing for people with dementia and other related disorders,” Mr. Proctor said. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center — which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton — is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease through care and consultation, information and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products. To sponsor a swimmer, make a donation or for more information about this event, visit http:// www.memoryswim.org. For more information about ADRC, please contact Mary Ann MalackRagona, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer, at 631.820.8068 or visit www.adrcinc.org. Donations may also be sent to: Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., 45 Park Avenue, Bay Shore, NY 11706.

Hurry! Hurry! Rush! Rush! I’m late. I’m late. I’m late. No time to lose. No time to wait. No time to even hesitate. Why do we do this to ourselves? We need a calmer pace. We need to stop and enjoy life and learn it’s not a race. Find what makes you happy and spend your time on this. Stop to smell the roses and you will find your bliss.

Old friends are the best; that’s really true, although there’s nothing wrong with making new. Someone to listen, someone to care. Someone to visit, someone to share. Tell me your stories and I’ll tell you mine. Is that a new hairdo? It’s simply divine! I know this poem’s silly but it really is so; and now that it’s written, I really must go!

Ode To Nature’s Flowers By: Sanford H. Weinberg, Plainview Observing my garden of exquisite flowers basking in the bright sun I tremble with joy and contentment at the reflection of jewel-toned mallows and the fluttering of monarchs to them drawn My eyes feast complacently upon the myriad colors of zinnia, orange, purple, pink and white, mauve snapdragons, violet angelonia, pretty calibrachoa and golden marigolds I breathe deeply and with joyful appetite the sweet fragrance of lantana, hues of red, yellow and lavender which make my heart go aflutter Thank God for the opportunity to enjoy the delights of flowers

Hazards Of Summer

A few days ago, I found a tick on my arm. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, a tick! These small bloodsucking creatures are the stuff of nightmares for many of Fire Island’s inhabitants. The deer tick, the carrier of Lyme Disease, is arguably the most unsettling. This minuscule monster is known for staying hidden. Many people do not even realize they have been bitten. The deer tick is the smallest of all of the species that crawl around Fire Island. In addition to the notorious red ring of Lyme Disease, ticks can also transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Where could I have

gotten a tick? Yesterday, as I was unlocking my bike to ride to work, I noticed a tick crawling on the fence post it was chained to. Sure enough, as I looked at the seat of my bike, a ‘questing’ tick was waiting for a meal. These ticks wait on an overhanging leaf or vine until something brushes up against them. Then they latch on and take advantage of their new host. How can you avoid getting ticks? It isn’t easy to tell what shade of clothing is least conducive to fostering ticks. Studies show that wearing dark clothing results in slightly fewer ticks actually on you, but lighter clothing enables

you to see the ticks and ultimately refrain from getting bitten. Check yourself for lingering ticks when you leave their environment and, if at all possible, avoid trekking through their home in the first place. If you do find yourself bitten, it is best to find immediate medical help. It is easier to treat the diseases contracted from ticks right away. It is also very hard to diagnose these ailments at home. This summer, while you are out and about, remember that ticks are an ever-present danger and you cannot be too careful. Always use bugspray, and remember to check yourself for ticks constantly.

Anniversary Breakfast served,” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said in inviting the public to attend. The Korean conflict has been called The Forgotten War because it is usually overshadowed in the nation’s memory by World War II, which ended just five years earlier. It began in June 1950, when thenPresident Harry S Truman committed U.S. ground troops to what he called a “police action” after North Korea crossed the

38th parallel and invaded South Korea. By the time the armistice was signed on July 27, 1953, an estimated 2 million people, mainly civilians, died in the brutal conflict. For the past few years, the Defense Department has been on a campaign to raise national awareness
