Suffolk Leg. Tom Donnelly Honors Emma Hasson With Citizenship Award

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently recognized Emma Hasson, a senior at Half Hollow Hills High School East in Dix Hills, with the 2023 Legislator Tom Donnelly Citizenship Award.

Ms. Hasson is currently enrolled in an EMT training course, a member of the National Art Honor

Society, President of the Art Club and Secretary of the Students Against Destructive Decisions. She learned she was recipient of the award during the high school’s senior awards ceremony on Thursday, June 1 where Legislator Donnelly presented her with a County Proclamation.

“It was a pleasure to

recognize Ms. Hasson for her service and accomplishments. She goes above and beyond and she truly embodies the spirit of the Citizenship Award,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I know that she has a very bright future, and I wish her all of the best.”

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Smithtown. They train and provide service and guide dogs for veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities.

This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months. Long Island resident Nathan Gardner is one of many veterans who have benefited greatly from America’s VetDogs and he’s eager to share his experience in hopes that it inspire others whose lives could be changed with the help of a special canine friend.

Some years ago, Nathan, who comes from a family with a strong military background, got in a car accident. He was left without reliable transportation, which left him frustrated. He was faced with a lot of down time and eventually decided to visit a recruiting o ce in his spare time. “I walked into the Air Force recruitment o ce, because I knew I liked what they could o er me.” He soon joined and became part of the Air Force Security Forces. “I actually ended up loving the job, loving the career. I was very happy with it.”

He served for 5 years, primarily working in nuclear weapons security, where he was required to wear full battle gear. This included a plated vest, all his equipment, two weapons, a bag full of gear and ammunition. “The weight of everything I was carrying ended up taking a toll on me.” He later found out he had a herniated disc, which has worsened since he left the service. Eventually, he developed two herniated discs, sciatic nerve damage and an atrophied calf muscle, which led to ankle problems.

Nathan learned of America’s VetDogs through the Veterans Resource Center at Su olk County Community College. “A lot of the things I was reading in the brochure matched what I was looking for and what I needed,” he said. “I wish I knew about the program sooner.”

Nathan reached out to America’s VetDogs

and was able to be placed with a service dog at no cost. He met and trained with his service dog, Kenzo, in February of 2022.

“It had gotten to the point where I would lock up, fall to the ground and not be able to move,” he explained. “So Kenzo has been trained to get me help. Training with him has been a life-changing experience. He has taught me how to handle myself and my disability appropriately and I really like how my mindset has shifted into a more positive place.”

Nathan has been able to flourish in ways he never could without a service dog. He recently graduated from St. Joseph’s University and will begin pursuing an MBA this fall. He has served as Vice President of the Long Island Campus Chapter of the Student Veterans of America and has new self confidence that he couldn’t imagine having years ago.

“Accomplishing these things means a lot to me in terms of what my future can now look like,” said Gardner, who attended his recent college graduation ceremony with Kenzo, his service dog. “I’m the first person in my family to get an undergraduate degree and I’m pursuing my graduate degree. I’m very proud of that. Getting Kenzo has been one of the best things for me.”

The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian.

The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective.

The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

The annual James C. Metzger Leadership Award for Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse was presented to players who competed in the finals of the 2023 Section VIII Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse championships on Tuesday-Wednesday, May 30-31, at Hofstra University. Leadership award recipients reflected the tenacity, honesty, commitment and positive attitude required in Nassau lacrosse. Each player also possessed the ability to inspire others on and off the field.

C. Metzger MVP awards were presented to four players participating in the 2023 Long Island Boys Lacrosse Championships at Stony Brook University.

Award Recipients

Senior attack Jake Norton of Farmingdale High School received a Nassau leadership award. In the Class A game, Farmingdale defeated Port Washington 11-3. At the Long Island Championships, goals were at a premium until Farmingdale tallied three times in the fourth quarter to defeat Northport High School 5-3. Senior goalie Michael Ippoliti protected that lead with several

spectacular saves for a total of 14 to capture the game’s MVP Award.

Senior long stick midfielder/attack Peter Thomann of Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick received a leadership award. In the Class B Nassau game, Garden City defeated Thomann’s school 7-6 and went on to win its Long Island Championships match 10-6 against West Islip.

Senior midfielder Danny Fisenne of Wantagh High School was honored with a leadership award. In the Class C Nassau game, Wantagh lost 15-9 to

Manhasset, which then defeated Shoreham-Wading River 11-6 in the Long Island Championships. Senior face off specialist/ midfielder Bryce Kipnes of Cold Spring Harbor High School was acknowledged with a leadership award. In the Class D Nassau game, Cold Spring Harbor defeated Friends Academy of Locust Valley 14-1. Cold Spring then defeated Mattituck/Southhold 8-2 in the Class D Long Island Championships game. Senior goalie Carsen Kirschner, who also plays basketball and is committed to the University of Scranton,

received the game’s MVP Award while allowing just one goal.

The awards were presented by 1970s Long Island lacrosse stars James C. Metzger and Vincent J. Sombrotto, and more recent high school, college and professional standout lacrosse player James Pannell.

A three-sport athlete at Half Hollow Hills East in Dix Hills, Metzger received the 1977 Lt. Ray Enners Award for outstanding Suffolk County lacrosse player when he scored 102 points and received AllAmerican honors. An AllAmerican lacrosse player

at Hofstra University, Metzger is the founder and chairman of Whitmore –The Agency, an insurance and financial services firm in Garden City. Sombrotto attended Chaminade High School in Mineola and was a Hofstra University All-American midfielder. He was named to the 1982 All-World Team and is a member of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Pannell is a two-time All-American and career points leader at Smithtown West High School. He was an AllAmerican at the University of Virginia and a Major League Lacrosse (MLL) AllStar.

East Northport Residents Recognized By PSEG Long Island

In recognition of National Volunteer Month – April – PSEG Long Island celebrates its employees who support their neighbors throughout the year through community service.

During the year and throughout the month of April, PSEG Long Island employees enjoy giving back to their communities. In April, they mobilized to assist the Red Cross in installing smoke detectors in homes in Hempstead; commemorated Earth Day and Arbor Day by providing Long Islanders with energy-saving trees

in Hauppauge and East Meadow; and joined Island Harvest Food Bank in Greenlawn to pack and distribute food to members of the community.

PSEG Long Island employee Mary Hughes (center of photo) participated in the food packing and distribution event with work colleagues Jessica Keller and Martin Kennedy, who also live in East Northport.

“I volunteered for this event to connect with other PSEG Long Island employees and to help out the community, said Hughes. “I enjoyed

working as a team to pack the assorted food and energy saving light bulbs, and working hard to give a helping hand where it was needed. I felt a sense of accomplishment and my experience was rewarding.”

24 Inducted To Elwood Athletic Hall Of Fame

Two dozen outstanding candidates were inducted at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s second annual Elwood Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony, held on May 12 in the school gymnasium. Each inductee was recognized, and their plaques were unveiled on the Hall of Fame wall outside the gym.

“We are proud to recognize our alumni for their outstanding athletic careers here at John Glenn and for the contributions many have made following their graduation,” Athletic Director Dave Shanahan said. “These inductees embody all this is important to our athletic program.”
