Surprise Story Time Visit

S

econd graders from Mrs. Trebour’s class at Countrywood Primary School in South Huntington received a ‘surprise’ visit from a local Marine veteran. The original visit, scheduled to coincide with Veteran’s Day, was cancelled due to Superstorm Sandy. Bill Ober, Commandant of the Huntington Detachment 792 of the Marine Corps League, instead decided to surprise the children with a visit after Memorial Day.

Summer “to Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So Summer is officially here… now what? Well, for me, in addition to all the normal seasonal stuff most of us look forward to, I am eagerly anticipating catching up on some quality TV time. Rerun Season, as I like to refer to it, is prime time to make use of that “On Demand” feature and settle in for some marathon viewing sessions, don’t you think? Remember all those cable TV series your friends keep talking about that you’ve never had the chance to check out? Well, plop down on the couch, put your feet up and start with Episode I, Season I. Watch a few episodes a night, every night, and you’ll be all caught up before you know it.

Oh, and let’s not forget about that pile of magazines from those subscriptions you just can’t bear to cancel. How many of you have accumulated quite the collection? What’s that, a Winter Music Preview on the cover? Only slightly outdated… take that cup of tea outside and start turning those pages. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can always attempt to crack open an actual book, too. I know, I know, such a thing is foreign to most people in this day and age. But remember how much you used to love it? How easy it was to become engrossed in chapter after chapter of a good novel to the point that you never wanted to put it down? Well, summer is the perfect opportunity to rediscover that passion.

Of course, beautiful beach weather always beckons, but the good part is that books and magazines travel easily enough. And with the technology of today, so can TV shows, actually. Take your tablet along for the ride, stick your toes in the sand, and insert a beach chair in place of that couch. You’re all set! Just think, an entire month to reintegrate yourself into the culture that you’ve been missing out on these last few months (or years, as the case may be). Time to do something for yourself, wouldn’t you say? Don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to anguish over all the normal daily obligations. But that “you” time… that’s something you can never get back. Priceless.

GOLD & SILVER AWARDEES - Members of Girl Scout troops 2210 and 1468 recently celebrated the girls’ receptions of their Gold and Silver awards. The Girl Scout’s Gold Award is the highest award for girls in grades 9-12; while the Silver Award is the highest award for girls in grades 6-8. Pictured: Kitty LeClaire, Nicole Katz, Lauren Groser, Walt Whitman High School Principal Kathie Acker, Cassie Eaches, Gabrielle Nardelli, Michelle Nardelli and Milly LeClaire, along with Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci.

EAGLE HONORED - Friends and family of Thomas J. Hustedt recently joined to celebrate his Eagle Scout Court of Honor. Hustedt is a member of Troop 34 in Huntington Station. He is pictured with: Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci, Nicholas Ciappetta, Vice-President of the South Huntington School Board; James Kaden, President of the South Huntington School Board and Walt Whitman High School Assistant Principal Jon Varlamos.

Nominations Needed Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci is encouraging local residents who know a WWII veteran to nominate him or her for Honor Flight Long Island. “The men and women who make up the Greatest Generation have made a lasting impact on our nation,” said Lupinacci. “Sadly, we are losing our WWII veterans and the valuable lessons they have taught us about service, sacrifice and commitment. However, through programs like Honor Flight Long Island, we are able to say thank you to those who so valiantly served our country in its time of great need.” Long Island is home to approximately 50,000 veterans. Unfortunately, we are losing our WWII veterans at a rate of 1,000 a day nationwide. Through the Honor Flight trip, the WWII veterans are recognized, admired and thanked for their service.

They come home knowing how much their country loves and appreciates them. “These trips are a special way to say thank you for the service of these valiant men and women. I hope everyone will join me in saying thank you to all our veterans and encouraging local WWII veterans to take advantage of these trips,” concluded Lupinacci. Honor Flight, a nonprofit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices, flies our nation’s heroes to Washington, DC to visit and reflect at the memorials. It is the intention of Honor Flight Long Island to honor as many of these selfless “ordinary people who saved the world” as we can, by providing them a FREE trip to visit their memorial. For more information, or to nominate a veteran for a flight, please visit: http:// honorflightlongisland.org/ donations.asp.

LOCAL BUSINESS HONORED - For the past 7 years, Eileen and Patrick Kelly, owners of Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop in Huntington Village, have hosted Free Cone Day, an annual event which thanks the community for their support. In lieu of payment for ice cream cones, the Kelly’s accept donations with all of the proceeds contributed to the Tri-Community Youth Agency. To date, more than $20,000 has been raised for that organization. Seen here presenting a proclamation to Eileen Kelly is Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer, who recognized the couple for their benevolent effort!

Scholar with Distinction whose love of history and English has led the avid writer to pursue a double major in those areas when she attends Georgetown University in September. “I have yet to determine what I wish to do in the field of writing,” she said. “But I know I want to affect people with my words, whether it be as a journalist, a novelist or a lawyer. I want people to see things from another perspective.” Throughout her academic career, Hannah has received accolades for her writing talents as well as her other areas of interest, which include chemistry, physics and French. Among her many activities at the high school, she serves as treasurer of the senior class and

Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) held its largest fundraising event of the year, The Enviable Life Ball at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury on Thursday, May 30th. Hollywood actor, producer and Commack native, Joe Sabatino, of the CBS series Vegas was Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Over the past two decades, Joe has enjoyed a robust acting career in film and television. Recently, he partnered with Sony/ NBC Universal as CoExecutive Producer on “Necessary Roughness,” a sports drama on the USA Network. Joe Sabatino inspired the crowd with his touching words, “With all of the changes on the horizon for ACLD, we all must work together and support this mission. You have the power to make a difference in the future of ACLD.” In addition, Michael “Big Mike” Lynch, fourth place finalist on the ninth season of American Idol was a special guest, performing with Scott Raffa’s band, East Coast at this very important event. More than 400 corporate leaders, government officials, families, friends and individuals with disabilities attended the ball. This exciting evening included casino games, dancing, live entertainment, great food, valuable raffle prizes and lots more! The Enviable Life Ball raised more than $335,000, which will be used directly by ACLD to help individuals with developmental disabilities increase their independence and help them to lead enviable lives. ACLD proudly honored Thomas A. Iadanza, First Senior Vice President of Valley National Bank with the 2013 Corporate Award. Also, George Singfield, ACLD’s Education Consultant was also awarded with the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Trial Team and Students for Social Justice, as well as the Harborfields Theater Company, Habitat for Humanity and the Interact Club. He is captain of the school’s Academic Team, which participates in academic competitions across Long Island, and competes with the school’s cross-country, winter track and tennis teams. The juniors portrayed the victims, and were outfitted with realistic looking injuries. Firefighters used heavy rescue extrication tools to gain access to the mock victims, some who were trapped and others scattered around the wreckage. Once removed and triaged according to the severity of their injuries, ambulances transported 48 patients to Huntington Hospital. The following agencies participated and provided standby coverage: Huntington, Halesite, Eaton’s Neck, Centerport,

Greenlawn, Northport, East Northport, Dix Hills, and Commack FD’s, Huntington Community First Aid Squad, Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Ambulance, and Suffolk County Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services Coordinators. The drill operation was held across from the Huntington firehouse on Leverich Place, and was under the command of Huntington Fire Chief Ken Cochrane.

Emergency Drill Held

The Huntington Fire Department and Huntington Community First Aid Squad jointly hosted a town-wide emergency MCI (Mass Casualty Incident) drill to support Huntington Hospital operations on Sunday, June 9th. The exercise simulated a car crashing into a building with a fire and hazardous materials contamination, resulting in multiple injuries. About 150 firefighters, emergency medical providers and juniors participated in the drill.

Writing About Right In an effort to reinforce character education throughout Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District, the Shared Decision Making Committee has assigned names to each wing of the building, corresponding to various character traits. In response to this initiative, the Dignity for All Students Act Committee established a Write About Right writing activity to motivate and involve the students. Students composed meaningful essays that

explored the definition of congratulates the first an assigned trait as well as round of students whose what that trait means to entries were selected: them. Teachers were asked Grade 3 – Bravery to submit their best student Marina Bergin entry to the committee for Tess Jablonowski review. Sigma Camp provides an opportunity for children ages 11-15 for the kind of direct interaction with leading scientists that most students are never given. Only the lucky few chance to experience this, and much later in their college years. Sigma Camp offers indepth studies in the main area of interest as well as multiple opportunities to attend workshops and lectures on other subjects. In the evening, there are varied possibilities for socializing at campfires, board games, and discussions on such topics as art, history, origami, film, and others. Of course, there is also plenty of time left to take advantage of summertime on our picturesque campus offering swimming and outdoor sports. Most Sigma Camp instructors have been working together at an excellent weekend enrichment program of School Nova at Stony Brook University. This program they created and successfully ran for the past nine years. This is Sigma Camp’s second year in existence.

The enrolment is at full capacity of 72 children with a waiting list. From the fist year’s alumni of 45 only two are not returning this year. Each student had to complete a set of challenging qualifying tests in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, which did nothing to discourage the aspiring young minds. Applications keep coming. Sigma Camp runs for one week in June this year, and will likely be moving to the last week of August for next year. Children fly from other states and other countries for the opportunity to participate in the camp. Sigma Camp wishes to share the story of its wonderful atmosphere and inspiring learning experience with the public. Members of the press are invited to visit the camp and see it in action during the week of June 22nd through 29th in Shelter Island, New York. Press Day is Tuesday, June 25th. To arrange a visit contact Victoria Bershadsky at vicka@mail.com or 617.786.5752.

What happens when a group of motivated scientists are inspired to give the most amazing and diverse learning experience to kids of middle and high school ages? Sigma Camp! It is a unique synergy of science summer camp and fully equipped laboratories, where research is lead by active, well published, and world renowned scientists from MIT, Harvard, Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and other similarly accredited institutions from around the world. “I succeeded in my academic career thanks largely to the great education and exposure to the wonders of science that I received early in my childhood,” says Alexander Abanov, a Sigma Camp instructor and a professor at Stony Brook University and Simons Center for Physics and Geometry. “I am convinced that educating kids fully and thoroughly in a real scientific research environment is essential to their overall development and future growth.”

Chances Are... for some, the hope for success and the hope for lifelong happiness. The numbers and certificates associated with schooling do not buy contentment nor success; they are merely one method of attaining it. Plenty of people with near-perfect SAT scores and degrees from the world’s most prestigious universities hate their lives. A high GPA and a fancy college sweatshirt do not guarantee happiness or success. It is all about hard work. A wise man once told me, “Garbage in, garbage out.” What this means is that the more effort, the more blood,

Chances are, if you go to a good college, you will find a good job. Chances are, if you find a good job, you will be successful. These generalizations are very good indicators of future prosperity; however, there are many people who are successful who didn’t excel in school. For instance, take a look at Bill Gates, the world’s wealthiest man. This billionaire did not finish college, yet he is undeniably successful. His exceptional story is,
