The Elwood Board of Education and Elwood Teachers Alliance have reached an agreement to amend and extend the ETA’s current contract with the district. The new contract, which extends until June 30, 2025, will fully freeze teachers’ salaries for the 2020-21 school year, resulting in a savings of approximately $500,000 for the upcoming academic year. Elwood is the first school district in Suffolk County to reach such an agreement with its teachers alliance for the 2020-21 school year.

“In light of the current fiscal crisis, we thank the Elwood Teachers Alliance for their willingness to engage in making shared sacrifices to benefit both our students and residents,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert.

“Our teaching staff is incredibly dedicated and hardworking.

During a time that I know is challenging for many of our own faculty members, I am pleased that we were able to reach an agreement that will allow the district to preserve programs, services and staffing.”

For the 2020-21 school year, teachers’ salaries will remain the same as their 2019-20 salaries.

There will be no salary or step increases. For the 2021-22 school year, teachers will receive a .5% salary increase plus step increases, followed by three additional contractual years that will include small increases to salaries and increased employee contributions to health care costs.

Dix Hills’ Marie Prisco Celebrates 100th Birthday Dix Hills resident Marie Prisco celebrated her 100th birthday recently with some help from Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland, who stopped by her home to present her a County proclamation in recognition of this incredible milestone.

Marie Prisco was born on May 21st, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York. She and her husband August,

a decorated marine, moved to Dix Hills in 1956 where they raised their 3 children.

Marie happily worked in food service at Half Hollow Hills High School East for 18 years. In her retirement, she has enjoyed going to the town of Huntington Senior Center for the recreational activities and lunch. She is also a proud grandmother of 6 and a great-grandmother of 3.

“I was so pleased to be on hand to help Marie celebrate her 100th birthday,” said Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland.

“Marie’s incredible milestone afforded us the opportunity to experience some much needed joy in the midst of our current reality. I wish her nothing but the best in the many years to come.”

Seniors Share Positive Message Through Song Senior year was cut short for Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students but that hasn’t stopped them from coming together in song. Concert choir seniors recently performed a virtual montage of “Rainbow” by Kacey Musgraves.

Productive Ways To Spend The Summer After Graduation Graduation is a momentous day in the lives of college students. After years of schooling that dates all the way back to preschool or kindergarten, newly minted college graduates are finally ready to begin their professional lives.

That can be a scary prospect for some students, especially those who graduate without jobs lined up.

The summer after graduating from college can be a time like no other in the lives of new graduates.

It can be easy to grow dejected as weeks or months go by without receiving a job offer, but spending the summer after graduation as productively as possible can help graduates overcome any dejection they might feel and increase their chances of landing a job.

• Contact career services offices at your alma mater.

Career services offices can help recent graduates as they look for their first jobs out of college.

Such offices may have access to job and internship opportunities that grads do not. In addition, they may coach grads on interviewing techniques and on ways to stand out in crowded job markets.

• Seek internships. If part - or full-time employment is proving elusive, don’t be afraid to seek and ultimately accept internships, which can provide a way for grads to get their foot in the doors in certain industries.

Summer internships may already be filled, so scour job boards for fall or winter internships.

• Network. Students who interned can get in touch with their past supervisors or mentors and find out if the company is hiring. Such people may be more inclined to bring someone with direct experience onboard — even if that experience was brief and unpaid. In addition, grads can connect with adjunct professors who work in their desired fields.

• When job hunting, don’t get pigeon-holed by your major. Just because a student graduates with a particular degree does not mean he or she needs to look for work in that field. In fact, many companies may prefer entry-level applicants with degrees that are not specific to their industries so their new hires are blank slates who can be easily trained.

• Customize a résumé for every job. Be sure the curriculum vitae is not static. Write and refine résumés for each job you apply for, mildly tweaking the wording or accomplishments to address the key phrases used in the job listing.

It can be tempting for recent college grads to spend the summers after graduation relaxing, but those who spend that time productively may land jobs more quickly than those who do not.

On Thursday, May 21, teachers, administrators and staff members from James H. Boyd Intermediate School and Elwood-John H. Glenn High School gathered at Elwood Middle School to host their reverse parades for students. The sun was shining, teachers decorated their cars, balloons were hung and music played throughout the campus.

Banners, purchased by Elwood’s Booster Club, featured portraits of each of the high

school’s 172 graduating seniors. The banners, coordinated by Mr. Motta and the Mammolito family, lined the road between the middle and high school.

“It was a beautiful tribute to our seniors,” Eileen Kelly-Gorman, the district’s director of math, science and technology, said.

Cars of faculty and staff members were parked along the campus’ perimeter and hundreds of families drove through to wave hello.

In the evening, John Glenn seniors replaced their porch lights with a green bulb —their class color — in solidarity throughout the district.

Pam Fine, the district’s director of humanities, who helped coordinate each of the parades, said, “Today was a great day for the soul. I hope families and teachers felt the love. We thank everyone for sharing their Elwood spirit!”

Congratulations to Northport High School senior Danielle Levanti whose project, “Sine Waves, Harmonic Series, Music to My Ears” recently received an honorable mention in the video category of the Steven H. Strogatz Prize for Math Communication.

The inaugural award, offered by MoMath, the National Museum of Mathematics, is named after mathematician, writer and Cornell professor Steven Strogatz and is awarded to students with compelling projects in video, audio, social media, art, writing and performance. Submissions are judged based on content, creativity and communication.

Danielle’s video submission was based on sound waves and music.

She graphed chords as either consonant or dissonant based on their

intersections.

In the coming days, Levanti will attend a virtual recognition ceremony and her name will be listed on the National Museaum of Mathematics website.

Additionally, Danielle was selected as one of four New York State students to receive a $500 scholarship from the New York State Mathematics Honor Society.

Danielle’s personal achievements as well as her involvement and contributions to the mathematics community certainly played a role in her being selected for the scholarship, according to K-12 District Chairperson of Mathematics Robin Rann.

This year, Danielle added the Northport High School Mathematics Student of Distinction to a long list of achievements.

Over the years she has

participated in the Long Island Mathematics Fair, the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY Old Westbury, as well as the university’s Math Research and Technology Program. Danielle also serves as chair of the events committee for the Northport chapter of NYSMHS. After graduation, Danielle intends to study biological engineering at Cornell University, where she plans to expand her passion for pharmaceutical and vaccine development.

“Danielle is truly a pleasure to work with.

She is a natural leader, and she is well-respected by both her peers and teachers,” Honor Society adviser Kristen Rozell said.

“Danielle is an outstanding student and extremely well-deserving of this award.”

has always been there to support the community during a crisis. The Library aided the World War I effort through its participation in a program to send books to troops overseas. During The Great Depression, the Library’s meeting room became a workroom where local residents worked in shifts mending donated clothing that was then distributed to families in need. During World War II and in the years that followed, the Library did its part to support the war effort by again collecting donations of books to send to armed forces overseas and giving Red Cross volunteers use of the Library to prepare surgical dressings.

More recently, following Tropical Storm Irene (2011) and Superstorm Sandy (2012), the Library provided recharging stations for electronics, wireless access, and information for those seeking help in locating emergency assistance.

Today, we are proud to be doing our part during this health crisis. While our doors must remain closed, we are working beyond our physical building, joining other public libraries in Suffolk County as the Suffolk Cooperative Library System in Bellport runs a 3D printer farm producing headbands for face shields to be used by healthcare workers at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled.

She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products.

Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit.

Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon.

Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. A young woman who loves Eileens services mentioned, “Being able to call up an experienced local and friendly hair

dresser during times like these where I am not comfortable going to a salon is so comforting.

She will come to my house and give me a hair cut outside if I want. It doesn’t get much more refreshing than that.”

Mary D. from Massapequa, a long-time client of Eileens also has only good things to share; “I live with a crippling disability and getting out is a challenge for me, especially in inclement weather. I’ve been using Eileen’s service for about 7 years now and I would not go back to a salon anytime soon. If I ever need anything from the store before she arrives I simply call her and she will pick it up for me. I live alone and if a light bulb goes out or I need to reach something in a closet that requires my mini ladder I feel comfortable asking Eileen to reach it for me. She’s like my family and is always asking if I need any help before she leaves.”

Scanlon’s vehicles are all easily identified because they are decorated with salon decals and sponsorship information from local businesses. A mini-bus will allow Eileen to carry more donations at once and take more sponsorships.
