Summertime Could Be Employment Time For Qualifying Suffolk County Youths

Qualifying Suffolk County residents between the ages of 14 and 20 may be able to secure summer employment through the 2023 Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)-funded Summer Work Experience Program, according to Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) who is making applications available through his district office in Huntington Station.

“This program, offered through the Suffolk County Department of Labor, is a wonderful way for County youths to take advantage of their time off from school to earn money to help with their personal or family expenses,” Legislator Donnelly said.

Deadline to apply is June 23, 2023 with the program scheduled to begin on Tuesday, July 3, 2023 and run for seven

weeks through Friday, August 18, 2023. Qualifying program participants will be paid $15 per hour and may work up to 25 hours each week. Besides the age qualifications, applicants must meet United States residency requirements and the gross annual income of the participant’s family must not exceed:

• $29,160 for a family of one

• $39,440 for a family of two

• $49,720 for a family of three

• $60,000 for a family of four

• $70,280 for a family of five

• $80,560 for a family of six

• For family units of more than six, add $10,120 for each additional family member

Youth applicants automatically qualify for the program if they are receiving: Food Stamps, Public Assistance, Home Energy Assistance Program

Neighbor Pets’

(HEAP), Social Security Income (SSI), or Medicaid. If you do not meet the income guidelines and do not receive any of the benefits listed, your application will still be considered based on availability of additional funding.

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year, America’s VetDogs is celebrating their 20th anniversary!

In the early 2000s, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, founded in 1946, recognized not only the growing need for specialized service dogs that could help wounded service-members, but also that aging veterans could also benefit from a specially trained service dog. America’s VetDogs was then founded as a program of the Guide Dog Foundation and later became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit. In 2015, first responders with work-related disabilities were added to the individuals served.

Today, the organization supports those they serve with an uncompromised commitment to excellence, from highly empathetic and certified trainers to meticulously constructed curriculum delivered during a two-week, inresidence training program, followed by a lifetime of aftercare support. It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one assistance dog, but services are always provided free to the individuals served.

The dogs they train are taught specialized tasks and skills such as retrieval of dropped items, positional cues to extend their handler’s personal space when in a crowded setting, counterbalance, nightmare interruption, pressing buttons

to open doors and more.

A hallmark of America’s VetDogs is the meticulous matching process to ensure that each program participant is matched with a dog that best suits their mobility, personality and lifestyle.

“The story of America’s VetDogs’ 20th Anniversary is a compilation of the inspiration and courage of the disabled veterans, active-duty personnel and first responders we serve, our extraordinary dogs who change and save lives and the generosity of thousands of caring volunteers, donors and sta ,” said John Miller, president and CEO of America’s VetDogs. “We are honored to serve so many people who have given so much of themselves for our nation, and we look forward to helping more of these heroes live without boundaries.”

The organization has many high-profile partnerships, which include NBC’s The Today Show, New York Islanders, New York Mets, Washington Capitals, Houston Texans, Contour Mortgage, Deloitte, and Voya. Their best known client was former President George H.W. Bush, who was matched with his service dog, Sully H.W. Bush, who is now a facility dog at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

Options For Community Living, Inc Receives $150,000 Housing For Everyone Grant

Options for Community Living, Inc., a nonprofit organization providing residential programs and support services for vulnerable people on Long Island, has been awarded a $150,000 Housing for Everyone grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®. Options is one of 37 non-profit organizations selected from more than 450 applicants to receive a Housing for Everyone grant as part of the TD Charitable Foundation’s signature grant initiative that has helped support organizations that are focused on providing affordable housing and affordable housing services since 2005.

In recent years the housing affordability crisis has continued to be a financial burden on families. As individuals and families across the country struggle with inflation and an exponential rise in rental costs, affordable

housing providers face increased hardship given the growing demand for affordable rental units and emergency rental assistance.

The grant will support property maintenance, repairs, and renovations to multiple affordable supportive housing units many of which have been in service for over 20 years.

“Options serves more than 2,000 Long Islanders each year,” said CEO, Yolanda Robano-Gross.

“With an affordable rent and services, our supportive housing programs help formerly homeless, disabled individuals and families live with dignity in the community.”

Robano-Gross continued, “This generous grant award is vitally important for our program. We see firsthand the impact that stable affordable housing has on an entire family. People take care of their health. Some return to work or school improving

their economic situation. Children perform better in school and have more opportunities, often ending the cycle of homelessness and poverty. Thank you, TD Bank for responding to this significant community need.”

Elwood High Schoolers Give Back With “Rhona’s Rainbows”

Members of ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School’s World Language Honor Society recently met to complete a community service project together.

To honor the memory of her Aunt Rhona, who had pancreatic cancer, junior Madelyn Katzman created the concept of “Rhona’s Rainbows.” These no-sew fleece blankets are donated to chemotherapy centers in children’s hospitals to bring smiles and comfort

to those going through a difficult time. Every blanket kit has a special message tag on it to write messages of positivity and inspiration for those in need. Last summer, Katzman donated blankets to the Pediatric Oncology Center at Columbia University.

For this recent project, WLHS students gathered to make blankets together for the next round of donations.

National Art Honor Society Inductees

“The students had a lot of fun learning how to make these no-sew blankets and loved knowing it was going to a great cause,” adviser Nicole Gendjoian said.

“To me, rainbows signify positivity, happiness and hope,” Katzman said. “My wish is that Rhona’s Rainbows continues to bring these feelings to many children and adults in need.”

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s National Art Honor Society held its induction ceremony in the school cafeteria on April 19, recognizing the school’s hardworking and talented student-artists. After a welcome from NAHS adviser Amy Lindenbaum, Vice President Sabrina Siddiqui lit the ceremonial candles in the primary colors of red, yellow and

blue, and President Maggie Murphy led the proud new inductees in their pledge.

“A significant part of what makes art so wonderful is being able to share our love for it with others and getting to connect to people through a common interest,” Murphy said. “I know for me, and I am sure for everyone else in the Art Honor Society, being part of a group of people

who all similarly care about art and who all want to express that through murals around the school, has given me a sense of community that I feel so lucky to have experience. I know that I will look back fondly on all the memories and lessons from my experiences with art here, and I know all of the other students in the room will do the same.”

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a free shop for Long Island children in need, is requesting donations of girls’ clothing, sizes 2 to 5. This outreach program, run and supported by the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City, assists more than 2500 children

and their families each year by providing them with clothing, backpacks for school and infant furniture. The service is set up like a store so people can select what they want from a wide variety of clothes. “As we’ve set up our winter store, we are finding a gap in our supply of

clothing for little girls,” says Ethical Friends of Children Director Jim LoPresti of Massapequa Park.

Ethical Friends of Children, established in 1985, is staffed entirely by volunteers and there is no charge for any services. Individuals, families, or community

groups donate gently used clothing and other things children may require, such as backpacks. Any cash donations go entirely towards purchase of needed items for children, such as diapers and formula.

“Customers” are referred by many of the area’s social service

organizations and are supported by both religiously affiliated and private agencies funded by Nassau and Suffolk Counties

Volunteers are always welcome to help sort, organize and deliver clothing and goods.
