A historical marker honoring the publisher of Long Island's first newspaper will be unveiled in Sag Harbor on June 6th.

The marker will commemorate David Frothingham, who published Frothingham’s Long-Island Herald from 1791 to 1796.

The marker on Main Street is sponsored by the Press Club of Long Island, which collaborated with the Sag Harbor Historical Society on the project. The marker is being installed by the Village of Sag Harbor.

The dedication ceremony will be held across the street from the historical society office at 174 Main Street at 1 p.m.

The marker is being installed in front of the property where Frothingham published the weekly newspaper.

Chris R. Vaccaro, president of the press club, the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, said, "Over the last few years the press club has worked hard to recognize places of historical significance in journalism on Long Island. This is yet another example of our board aiming to educate the public on local history.

Thank you to the Sag Harbor Historical Society for all of their help with the project."

Recently, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs P.B.A. and the Suffolk County Correction Officers Association, hosted their annual Memorial Service to honor Suffolk County’s Corrections Officers and Deputy Sheriffs who have died in service. County Executive Steve Bellone was the Master of Ceremonies for the annual service, which took place on the grounds

of the Sheriff’s Office in Riverhead.

Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr., who gave his first Memorial Service Address, stated: “It is truly my privilege and an honor for me to be here as we pay tribute to the lives and work of the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office who died in service since 1887, and throughout our long history.

The Sheriff’s Office is a unique agency - steeped in

historic significance; and while our official duties may have changed over several centuries, our central mission to serve and protect is what has connected us through 335 years of continuous service to Long Island.”

The ceremony was attended by family members of the deceased who placed roses by the Sheriff’s Office monument on the grounds of the Suffolk County Correctional Facility.

If you are interested in volunteering with MHAW, you can. Volunteer opportunities are available each Saturday at their Chemical Free Garden in Ronkonkoma. The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. They also take donations of birdseed for the many birds that visit this Garden!

Interested in becoming a sponsor or vendor? MHAW has an upcoming event, which has sponsorship and vendor opportunities available! This event is their 6th annual Kick Stands Up Event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd, at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Jumping into June Another month has come and gone, and here we are, hurtling toward “summer” through the rain and fog of spring. The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind.

I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion.

Being productive is hard work.

And with that, the many lists of things to accomplish, some

carried over from just prior to the new year, remain. Sure, a few items have made their way into the “done” column; but mostly, the main bullet points stare back from the page, some expanded upon and added to as the months have progressed.

The fact is, there is always more work to be done, always some aspect of life to improve upon, an avenue of growth to explore.

Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze.

The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that

incomparable moment of zen, and carry it with you into the other elements of life. Find the beauty in everything, as they say. A flower, a butterfly, a sunrise, the ocean crashing along the shore…

Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether.

Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that?

And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services.

They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries!

Westchester. Several years later Frothingham became entangled in a claim of slander by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. The claim under the terms of the Alien and Sedition Acts stemmed from an article published in a Brooklyn newspaper, the Argus. Frothingham was found guilty and a fine of $100 was imposed, which a friend of his from Bridgehampton paid.

A bond of $2,500 was set by the court to make sure he would never publish anything that could be considered libelous in the future. His inability to pay the bond resulted in him becoming a seaman to earn the money. No one

Join for the 36th Annual Mermaid Parade, Saturday June 16th. The parade kicks off at 1 p.m. on West 21st and Surf Avenue and proceeds on Surf Avenue to West 10th, then heads south to the Boardwalk and then west back to its ending point at Steeplechase Plaza on the Boardwalk.

The Mermaid Parade is a unique and artistic celebration of ancient mythology and the honkytonk seaside ritual that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the amusement district. The parade features marching bands, drill teams, floats, antique cars and some 1,500 participants dressed in hand-made costume of mermaids, sea creatures, amusement rides and Neptunes. It is the largest art parade in the nation and the largest event of the year in Coney Island.

The o-fish-al beer of the Parade will be flowing

all day. Mermaid Pilsner will be available straight from the source at Coney Island Brewery, and at bars and restaurants throughout the Coney Island neighborhood!

“We are very excited to have Amanda Palmer & Neil Gaiman lead the parade, as this years Queen Mermaid & King Neptune” Parade and Coney Island USA Founder Dick Zigun said. “And, we are thrilled to have our good friends at the Coney Island Brewery as presenter and Kitchen 21 as our co-presenter.”

According to tradition, Queen Mermaid and King Neptune will be wheeled through the parade in an antique wicker Boardwalk Rolling Chair that dates back to 1923.

Immediately after the parade, at approximately 4 p.m., Dick Zigun, leads the King and Queen procession through MCU Parking lot (19th and Surf Avenue) to the beach,

for the official Beach Ceremony and opening of the ocean for the summer swimming season.

From 5 to 11 p.m., Coney Island USA & Coney Island Brewery Present: The Mermaid Parade Ball (The Official After Party of The Mermaid Parade) with co-presenter Kitchen 21! The Ball takes place at Kitchen 21’s Rooftop Lounge on W.21st St. on the boardwalk.

Education Event NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently partnered with National Grid to host a Memorial Day education event for 100 local students from Roosevelt Middle School at the Veterans Memorial located on the plaza of NYCB LIVE. With the support of local Long Island veterans and active duty military, the Roosevelt Middle School students had the opportunity to learn about the branches of the military and Long Island’s service contributions to the United States armed forces.

The Memorial Day education event was a part of the venue’s new community platform NYCB LIVE Cares, which harnesses the power of sports and entertainment to make an impact in the Long Island community.

“The Coliseum serves as

a symbol and pays tribute to those who have sacrificed so much for our country,” said Josh Pruss, Senior Vice President of Global Partnerships for Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment.

“We are proud to work with National Grid on this important event. By introducing local youth to our veterans, we are able to keep their incredible stories alive and honor their commitment to our community and our country.”

During the event, students had the opportunity to visit with the different branches of the military and learn more from active duty service members. Students also sat with local veterans to hear their stories and together created Memorial Day wreaths to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Dance students at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts had the pleasure of taking a class led by world-renowned dancer, choreographer and teacher Anabella Lenzu.

The master class program is part of the school’s ongoing mission to provide its dance students with an inside look at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen field.

Originally from Argentina, Ms. Lenzu has more than 25 years of experience working in Argentina, Chile, Italy and the USA. As artistic director of Anabella Lenzu/ DanceDrama, she draws on her diverse background to create thought-provoking and socially-conscious

dance theatre in the interest of improving the human condition.

Ms. Lenzu instructed the students to listen to the choreography she has created, but to interpret it for themselves. “I love the diversity of the students here,” she said of the LIHSA dance students.

“Some are shy, some more outgoing. I help them find their voices. It’s a challenge for the teacher.”

Her choreography has been commissioned all over the world for opera, TV programs, theatre productions and by many dance companies. She founded her own dance school, L’Atelier Centro Creativo de Danza, in 1994 in Argentina, and has maintained an active teaching career ever since.

She currently conducts classes at Peridance Capezio Center, Wagner College and Lehman College. She has written for various dance and arts magazines, and published her first book in 2013, entitled “Unveiling Motion and Emotion.” The book contains writings in Spanish and English on the importance of dance, community, choreography and dance pedagogy.

“This was an exciting class, because it helped the students discover another character,” said LIHSA Dance Instructor Dina Denis Paolucci. “It’s not just dancing; there’s a deeper meaning to their movements. Ms. Lenzu is a creative being.”

Suffolk County teenagers will once again have an opportunity to be recognized for their community service and personal accomplishments with the return of Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory’s Distinguished Youth Award program.

Created in 2017, the program focuses on youth ages 13 to 18 who are taking the initiative to explore their communities as well as develop their

abilities.

The program invites participants to set and work toward goals in at least two of four areas: Volunteer Service, which includes volunteering time to benefit members of the community; Personal Development, which includes assessing one’s own skills and setting goals for personal improvement; Exploration of Suffolk County, which involves visiting 15 of Suffolk County’s parks; and

Physical Fitness, designed to increase participants’ level of physical activity to promote physical and mental well-being.

Participants will work closely with local elected officials to lay out goals and a plan to accomplish them and will have a year to complete their tasks.

Individuals who participate will be rewarded with one of the three medals based on the number of categories they complete. The Bronze

Medal will be awarded to participants who complete two of the four listed program areas, while the Silver Medal will be awarded to individuals who complete three of the four areas. Participants who successfully complete all four areas will be rewarded the highest level of achievement, the Gold Medal.

“Suffolk County is filled with talented and dedicated young people, and the Distinguished

Applications Being Accepted Youth Award gives them a unique chance to work with local officials, connect with their communities, and set and reach goals for their own personal development,” said Presiding Officer Gregory.

“These young people are our future, and this program will help them become leaders. We look forward to recognizing them for their hard work.”

Registration for the Distinguished Youth Award is open through June 30,

Healthy Dining Never Tasted So Good!

The fast food business is evolving, and more healthy choices are starting to become available. I had the pleasure of dining at a recently opened restaurant, CoreLife Eatery in Farmingdale, last week.

They are focused on offering only the best foods and preparing them fresh on the spot. So many options to choose from - green bowls, grain bowls, broth bowls, freshly made beverages... the portions are hearty and satiating. You are able to make your own bowl or plate, choosing whichever fresh ingredients you prefer; you can also choose one of their creations from the menu, which can be customized as well. This place really appeals to me. I can choose all the components of my meal, and I know they are fresh, nutrient-dense ingredients, perfect for my needs.

For my dining choice, I chose the Tuna Poke Fire Bowl. It comes with Ahi tuna

poke, avocado, pickled jalapeños, pickled red onions, pickled red cabbage, sesame Sriracha sprouts and forbidden purple rice ( I opted for romaine and spinach instead of the rice). I topped this meal with the suggested fire sauce and sesame ginger dressing. If you like heat, I highly recommend the fire sauce; it had an incredible flavor, as well as a nice touch of spice. It was an extremely tasty dish that left me satisfied. I really am looking forward to my next meal at CoreLife Eatery. It truly is the next step in the evolution of dining.

All I know is that dining out and choosing to be healthy have usually been difficult.

(NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around.

Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers.

The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers.

The goal is to improve children’s literacy, strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers.

It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America.

Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year.

Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service.

IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits.

Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season.

The Dynamics Of Leadership

Due to the importance of this topic, one can find a multitude of books, seminars and programs devoted to all aspects of leadership. This column will cover several important phases of the subject. At a later date, we may continue into other facets as well.

First off, let’s define leadership. It is a process of influencing a group to achieve assigned goals. During my senior years of grad school, I wrote a thesis on leadership comparing how the U.S. Army developed leaders through the “90 Days Wonder Program,” which took participants from civilian to platoon leader in just three months time. This was then compared to the executive training program at RH Macy.

Taking into account the deeper level of responsibility assigned to a platoon leader, much of the leadership skills remained somewhat the same.

As just one example of the military training, every soldier knows of “the code.”

During combat situations, the wounded were NEVER left on the battlefield. This was not recorded in any training manual, but strictly enforced by every trooper in the unit.

Now let’s delve into the world of work. Any of my readers who majored in economics will soon recognize the

following: In business, there are two types of capital: 1.) Working Capital (Cash): Used by a business to fund company growth and meet cash flow needs.

2) Human Capital: The monetary value of all goods and services produced by all employees of the company.

Key Leadership Point: A company that is primarily devoted to only working capital and ignoring the value of its employees will never make it in today’s economic climate.

Every author who writes on leadership seems to have their favorite list of “dos & don’ts.” Here is mine: MUST DO Effective immediately, stop using the word “I” and substitute the word “WE.” You never express your own opinion, inferring that “it’s my way or the highway!” It’s now “WE” will do this together. By using this simple method, you will immediately starting building a trust level, which is so important for any leader.

Trust is the base foundation for any relationship. It is built up slowly over time, never rushed. Unfortunately, once trust is broken, in the majority of cases, it will never regain its former level. All of this is especially true in leadership situations. Any

type of leader must have the full confidence and trust of the people he/she leads. As an example, the leader should be able to perform any of the tasks assigned to others.

Moving into the world of interpersonal relationships, a couple who is married or living together must have the full trust of the other 24/7. Once this trust is shattered, the end result is usually separation or eventually divorce.

Another key aid in leadership is to always maintain a positive attitude. Let’s face it, there will be days when everything seems to be going wrong, or when careful planning seems to not pay off. Remember, you are the leader, and the team looks to you for guidance and support. Never forget, that 70%-80% of the message you give is not what you say, but how you look when you say it!

NEVER DO Being successful as a leader or a partner in marriage takes continual effort on a daily basis. It includes never taking the other person for granted or putting your personal interests ahead of another.

Never take advantage of your position.

Never make premature judgments about your team. Each person assigned to you is an individual with their own hopes and dreams.

Montauk Observatory (MO) is honored to host retired Marine Colonel and NASA Astronaut Randy Bresnik to present two free lectures at the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall, June 27th and June 29th. Col. Bresnik will share highlights from his recent long duration mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS.) Audiences also will have the unique opportunity to hear from an astronaut’s spouse who is distinguished in her own right. Rebecca Bresnik Esq. serves as Associate Chief Counsel for International Matters at NASA's Johnson Space Center and is the lead attorney for the ISS; she will co-present with her husband.

Col. Bresnik returned from his most recent mission in December, 2017, where he served as the Commander of the International Space Station for Expedition 53 and flight engineer for Expedition 52. Expedition 52/53 was completed in 139 days, making 2,224 orbits of the Earth and traveling 58,835,163 miles.

"The Bresniks are both remarkable people,” said Terry Bienstock, President of Montauk Observatory.

Two Hands to Save Lives

Students took time to be trained to save lives on May 23rd during Northport High School’s CPR-AED Awareness Day. In the school’s commons, volunteers composed of sports medicine and IB students, as well representatives from Northport Fire Department’s Smokeaters, set up stations to teach their peers the action and

information necessary in an emergency.

Students learned by demonstration how to use an AED machine and how to CPR with just their hands, and had the opportunity to practice on a CPR dummy. Other stations included creating an “in case of emergency” contact (ICE) in their phones, downloading the “First Aid App” and more.

In addition, students added painted handprints to a banner hanging in the commons, that read “My hands can save a life, can yours?”

“Learning CPR is so simple that no one should be left helpless in a crisis,” said event facilitator Tracey Braun. “We’re trying to spread awareness so more people can save lives if that time comes.”

the use of its Huntington facility to enable teams to practice in the week leading up to the tournament.

Nineteen teams from eleven fire departments participated in the tournament, which involved groups of five firefighters working to extricate a “victim” from a “crash” using the Jaws of

Life.

Each team was judged on the amount of time it took to perform the extrication, the handling of equipment and the safety procedures they followed.

After the tournament, the vehicles were brought back to Gershow’s facility, where they were shredded and recycled.

Water Wise Winner

The YMCA of Long Island and Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities, Inc. have selected Isabella Goutevenier, age 9 of Huntington, as the winner of their Water Wise Water Safety Kids Art Contest, launched to help make children more aware of the importance of water safety.

This unique opportunity was intended to encourage children age 12 and under

to express their artistic interpretations of water safety and share their own tips for peers. More than a hundred submissions were received by the YMCA of Long Island and Stew Leonard’s.

During the special Water Wise Water Safety event, held at Stew Leonard’s in East Meadow, Kim and Stew Leonard, Jr. presented the YMCA of Long Island

with a donation of $20,000 to underwrite swim lessons for 210 local children, teaching them critical water safety skills, and to certify 10 young adults to become American Red Cross Certified Life Guards.

Both organizations strive to educate and engage local communities about the importance of being a responsible swimmer, and this joint venture is the latest initiative aimed at keeping Long Islanders safe this summer. A jury of representatives from the Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities and YMCA of LI selected Isabella because her drawing beautifully represented how children can stay safe in and around the water. She will receive a $50 gift card to Stew Leonard’s Food Store, a Stewie the Duck Gift Basket, and FREE swim lessons at the YMCA of Long Island.

Unified Athletics Northport High School’s Unified Athletics team faced Amityville High School’s Unified Athletics team in their last home game of the season on May 22nd.

The Unified Athletics

team at Northport High School is made up of special education athletes and general education partners who work together during basketball games against other section XI schools where this program is

offered.

This program is part of the Special Olympics, and more than 1.4 million people across the globe participate in this rewarding activity.

National Merit Winner Julianne Starzee, a senior at Northport High School, has been selected to receive a National Merit Scholarship.

Students selected for this scholarship are recognized for having a strong combination of skills, accomplishments and potential for success in pursuing higher education, and were selected by a

committee composed of high school counselors and admissions officers.

Julianne was awarded by the National Merit Scholar organization with a $2,500 scholarship. Only 2,500 students from a pool of 15,000 outstanding finalists were selected for this award. Julianne plans on going into the field of

physics in college.

“In a field where women are terribly underrepresented, it is so refreshing to see a student with such tremendous potential being recognized for her hard work,” said Principal Daniel Danbusky.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
