Northport High School senior Abby Fortuna was honored at the May 6 board of education meeting for being chosen as the business student of the month. The student of the month award, in partnership with the

Northport Rotary, honors students who excel in their respective areas.

Abby was recognized for her dedication to the business department and hard work during a virtual internship over the summer. She is also

a lacrosse player, and integrates her lessons from business into her sportsmanship, and vice versa.

Abby will be attending St. Leo University in the fall and plans to pursue a career in finance.

acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction.

This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills.

The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff.

Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home.

Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests.

HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. Sometimes the best outcomes come after the biggest storms.

Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a nonprofit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us.

This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected.

They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations.

Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge.

Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility.

All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible.

Canoe And Kayak Storage Rack Program Just In Time For The Summer Season Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) and her colleagues in elected office joined with representatives from the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers and Laborers Local 66 at Blydenburgh County Park to announce the launch of the “Suffolk County Canoe and Kayak Storage Rack Pilot Program”. Together, they unveiled the first of six storage racks for canoes and kayaks which will be located at various parks and beaches across the county beginning Memorial Day. This initiative, spearheaded by Majority Leader Legislator Berland, will allow residents to rent a space to lock their kayak or canoe for the entire season, making it easier and more convenient for them to enjoy the water in our county parks and beaches. The program was unanimously approved by both the Suffolk County Parks Trustees and then the Suffolk County Legislature at the May 11th General Meeting.

The material and labor used to construct the racks were generously donated. The material by the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers and the labor by Laborers Local 66.

The program allows residents to purchase a seasonal sticker to place on their canoe or kayak. They will then be assigned a specific storage rack location and are responsible for providing their own device(s) to secure the canoe or kayak to the rack. The season will run from Memorial Day through Columbus Day and spaces will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. Storage racks will be located at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown, Southaven County Park in Brookhaven,

Lake Ronkonkoma County Park in Lake Ronkonkoma, Timber Point Golf Course in Great River, Indian Island County Park in Riverhead and Smith Point County Park Marina in Shirley.

Permits can be purchased in-person through the Suffolk County Parks Department at the West Sayville Administration Building (200 Montauk Highway, West Sayville). Those interested in reserving a space may download the form online at https:// w w w. s u f f o l k c o u n t y n y. gov/Departments/ Parks/Doing-Business/ Seasonal-Kayak-CanoeStorage-Rentals.

For Suffolk County residents who are Green Key Card holders there is a $100 fee for a seasonal permit and a $250 fee for nonresidents.

“We are so fortunate to live in a place where we have beautiful waterways, beaches and parks,” said Legislator Susan A. Berland. “I sponsored this program to make it easier and more convenient for our residents to access and enjoy the water in our County parks and beaches. Thank you to the Suffolk Alliance of Chambers and Local Laborers 66 for their generous donations and help in getting this program up and running.

She has worked in the book industry and editorial area for eight years creating animation, editorial work and picture book spreads working both traditionally and digitally. Her works have been recognized by many Illustration and Children’s Book Awards Yuke says “Curiosity about the universe and humans is always with her. She believes that visual language is her best way to communicate with the world.”

Joseph A. Miller is an Associate Professor of Art at S.U.N.Y. Buffalo State, where he has taught drawing and painting since 1997. His work is in numerous public and private collections, and has been shown internationally in Finland, China, Poland and the Czech Republic, as well as across the United States, earning numerous awards in many prestigious exhibitions.

“I focus primarily on the human figure depicted in environments that create a context for psychologically charged, open ended narratives. Images of figures or figures in landscapes, in groups or in isolation, share a common feeling of significance. Wholly absorbed within themselves or the dialogue shared between one another, they wait for the unfolding of their private story.

primary inspiration. The unexpected colors and textures found in nature inspire Ron to capture the dynamics of light and dark; form and balance. As a realist, he uses tone and color to invite his audience to experience the moment captured on canvas. His preferred mediums of acrylic (for layering of color), or oil (for blending) are specifically chosen to create a sense of drama and movement. Ron is also a muralist and has done commissions for school districts, hospitals, nursing homes, municipalities, and private residences.

Caryn Coville’s style is realism, and her work showcases

objects. Her award-winning work has been shown extensively in solo gallery exhibits and juried shows and her work is held in corporate and private collections throughout the United States and Canada. She has an extensive list of awards and credits for her amazing artwork.

Lupe Galván grew up in rural Idaho among the farm lands of the Snake River valley, the historic land of the Shoshone people. He earned his MFA from The New York Academy of Art in 2009. Lupe’s personal cosmogony guides him to explore experiences of Indigenous roots and American life and express them through painting and drawing. He is passionate about mentorship and teaches drawing and painting Yavapai College in Prescott, AZ, Boise State University, Boise, ID, Neumann University, Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia, PA and Southern

Holden Willard is a 21 year old undergraduate student studying at the Montserrat College of Art. In May, he will receive his BFA in Painting, however his interests serve multiple mediums: printmaking, photography, performance, collage & woodworking. “My work is currently concerned with analyzing the effects of white male toxicity, specifically toxic masculinity. I’m mainly striving towards creating a dialogue between the past, present and future - be it through the lens of family, friends and environment. In my mind, these are essential devices that I utilize to create a coming of age narrative in rural Maine. Images from home, adventures of youth, fears and anxieties expressed through eyesight and posture - all in an effort of saying the unsaid.”

Patty Yantz’ art is about personal reaction to a scene or location rather than an attempt at technical reproduction of that view. “Focusing on color, contrast and composition, I have found that close-up observation is a good tool for understanding different perspectives and developing conceptual awareness. After retiring from teaching secondary art Patty has immersed herself in her own art career. She works in Pastel, Acrylic and Watercolor, showing her works in juried and invitational exhibits across Long Island. “Nature is the underlying theme of all my work, with a major inspiration being the Long Island landscape.”

Americans and Canadians consume more gasoline per capita than any people in the world. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the United Nations, Americans consume 4.39 liters of gasoline per capita each day, while Canadians consume 3.62 liters per capita each day. In lieu of driving everywhere this summer, men and women who want to be more mindful of the environment can leave their cars home more frequently. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Walking or cycling is a great way to get some time outdoors on warm summer days, and reducing fuel consumption is an equally great way to help the planet.

• Vacation locally. Another way to help the planet when spending time outdoors this summer is to vacation locally. People who vacation close to home typically do not fly, and that’s a significant benefit to the planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that aviation emissions release black carbon, nitrous oxide and sulphur oxide, which contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. And while the EIA notes that

automobiles and airplanes produce relatively similar amounts of carbon dioxide per gallon, airplanes burn considerably more fuel than cars, thanks in large part to the considerable amount of fuel planes burn on the runway. By vacationing locally, outdoor enthusiasts can reduce their reliance on airplanes, thereby reducing the effects those airplanes have on the environment.

Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

• Volunteer with a local park service. The National Park Service offers a variety of volunteer opportunities to individuals who are enamored with the great outdoors and are interested in protecting their local and national parks. Ocean Avenue Elementary second grader Quinlan Brennan has received an Award of Excellence in the National Reflections Art Contest for her film, “Quinlan’s Fireside Chat.” Quinlan will receive a $200 Young Artist Scholarship, and her film will be included in the traveling exhibition.

Quinlan is one of only 14 students to be recognized with this award for the film production category, and is one of only seven students in the state to be recognized in the contest overall. Her film was informational,

sharing insight on the “people in our past, and how they make the world a better place.”

Quinlan then reflects on the accomplishment of historical figures including Ghandi and Albert Einstein, amongst others.

The National Reflections Art Contest is hosted each year by the National PTA and students in grades Pre-K through 12th are invited to create and submit original works of art in the areas of Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts. These works are

then judged by a group of art professionals, who select the winners.

Interesting Facts About Memorial Day Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries. · Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a

Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 nowfreed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day. · Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgiabased Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General

Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.” · It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended.

This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning to summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.

· Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that

Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966.

Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin are some other towns that claim to have celebrated

Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.

Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.
