Meet Harborfields High School’s 2023 Valedictorian And Salutatorian

Harborfields High School recently announced the Class of 2023’s valedictorian, Lindsay Sung, and the salutatorian, Alexa Best.

Sung is an active member of her school community, an athlete and musician, and member of multiple clubs, including the National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society and Rho Kappa. She volunteers and works at the local library. Sung enjoys research and intends to pursue electrical or chemical engineering in college.

Best is an accomplished athlete, participating in swimming both in and out of school, as well as a highly active musician in the Harborfields concert and marching bands. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. Best volunteers at the local library, and enjoys crocheting and calligraphy.

Mario Bento Named To Football Golden Eleven

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior Mario Bento has received the Golden Eleven award from the National Football Foundation’s James C. Metzger Suffolk County Chapter, recognizing excellence in both academics and football. Bento and his fellow honorees were presented with their awards on April 30 at the NFF ScholarAthlete Awards Brunch at the Marriott in Melville.

Bento’s 2023 accolades include All-County football honors, the Suffolk Zone award for physical education and summa cum laude designation in his graduation class. He will be attending the University of Connecticut this fall.

Interesting Facts About Memorial Day

Interesting facts about Memorial Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries.

• Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony where they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.

• Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by Southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgiabased Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have

influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.”

• It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning of summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.

• Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin, are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.

Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF also awards selected Music Educators with their ‘Educator of Note’ award annually, allowing those who go above and beyond for their students to be honored with a grant that can be used within the school or district that they work(ed) in.

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Harborfields Central School District has been honored as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. This designation is awarded to districts throughout the

country that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music education and access to their students.

At least two $1,000.00 Scholarships will be awarded to students who have had personal experience with homelessness. Students must be a current resident of Nassau or Suffolk County (unless already enrolled in college or trade school elsewhere, with a previous residence in Nassau or Suffolk Counties), and have attended elementary, middle and/or high school in Nassau or Suffolk Counties.

Applicants must enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study or other licensed vocational program no later than the fall session of 2024.

Complete packages must be received by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 15 and must include each of the following:

The Boy Scouts of America Alumnus of the Year Award is BSA Alumni

Local Scouting Volunteer Recognized

Association’s highest recognition. This award was established to recognize

alumni of the BSA who, over a sustained period, have used the skills and values

they learned through their association with scouting to make significant and longlasting contributions to the scouting alumni movement, to scouting in general and their communities. This is not meant to be another Man of the Year, Good Citizen, or general Philanthropist award. There are three levels of this award – national, territories and council – that may be granted for alumni service.

Award was created in 2013 and presented in Suffolk County Council for the first time in 2022, to Carl Hyman.

The Council Alumnus of the Year Award is given for exceptional service to the alumni movement on a council-wide basis. Each council may select one nominee for this award annually. The council must notify the national office of their selection allowing accurate record keeping and current website information. Recognized for promoting the scouting program for more than 45 years and being actively involved on a variety of levels, Phyllis Stein of Hauppauge was presented with the BSA Council Alumnus of the Year Award during the Suffolk County Council (ScoutsBSA) Fellowship Dinner, held at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp on March 23, 2023.

Phyllis has been a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America SCC since 1978. She is actively involved with Troop 343 (Hauppauge) and Troop 125 (Commack) and is a past Cub Scout Leader. In addition to serving for many decades as the Public Relations Chair and Photographer for the Jewish Committee on Scouting, the Matinecock District, and many SCC-

wide events (including covering and staffing seven National Scout Jamborees) and writing news articles about the various events, she also served as the cochair of the council’s history book, Scouting in Suffolk, 1910-1986.

As Bob Koch mentioned when he presented Phyllis as this year’s awardee, “no one has done more in promoting scouting in Suffolk County than Phyllis Stein. She is extremely deserving of this award.”

Harborfields Seniors Braverman And Lusby Win Suffolk Zone Awards

Harborfields High School seniors Athena Braverman and Mathew Lusby were recently named winners of this year’s Suffolk Zone Awards.

The Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance annually gives awards to one male and one female student in each Suffolk high school,

selected for excellent achievement in physical education, outstanding character and leadership in schoolwide activities.

Braverman, a key member of the school’s volleyball team, has won numerous accolades in her athletic career including the Suffolk County Exceptional Senior Award, Suffolk All-Tournament Team, All-Conference, AllCounty Academic, New

York State Scholar-Athlete and the 2022 USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award. She will continue her career at Skidmore College as a pre-med student.

Lusby has been a member of the Harborfields boys soccer program for four years and a varsity team member for two. He will attend and play club soccer at Binghamton University this fall.
