Marking The Milestones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock.

After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago.

But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time flies while you’re busy

working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule.

Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it.

And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult

responsibilities. To think we once thought finals and term papers were the ultimate source of stress, right? It almost makes school seem appealing once again. Almost.

To all those graduating from college this Spring, congratulations. May you find something worth pursuing that brings you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment; ideally, something which pays the bills, of course.

And may you savor these next years most of all as, before you know it, you will be receiving invitations to your own 10 year college reunion.

As I count down the days until my final day of high school, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the friends that I’ve made, the things that I’ve done, and the chapter of my life that is now coming to a close.

These past few years have gone by so fast. From the moment I walked into SJB on the first day of my freshman year, I knew that my final day would be hard. I’ve made special bonds here. I’ve done great things here.

St. John’s has afforded me the ability to attend Villanova in the fall.

Without SJB, my high school years would have been mediocre. Now, as a

graduating student, I feel torn between emotions.

It is a bittersweet end to the greatest part of my life thus far. As I close my locker for the last few times, I am just beginning to realize how special my time here was. I’ve never felt so accepted by a group of my peers.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this article.

I am going to miss every aspect of SJB. From the Cougar Crazies to Mrs. Walsh screaming in the hallways, St. John’s has been a pleasure. My years here have influenced my future. I’ve just qualified to row in the National Championship for St. John’s. Hopefully, I can

give back a medal to a school that has given me so much.

If I could start over as a freshman, I would do it all the same. There is nothing about St. John’s that I would have changed. If you are on the fence about sending your son or daughter to St. John’s, do it. It is the smartest investment you’ll ever make. St. John’s is an environment that breeds leaders.

Coming from a senior, SJB is a place where a family is formed. I would not trade my years here for anything. They say high school is the best time of your life, and so far, this rings true.

Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, is proud to be awarded a grant of $267,839 on behalf of Kohl’s Department Stores, through the Kohl’s Caresâ cause merchandise program.

Twenty-eight minutes and thirty seven seconds after the starting horn sounded, 12 year-old Luke Anderson crossed the finish line on a beautiful Saturday morning elated with his accomplishment.

A leukemia survivor, Luke joined his family and other participants at the Walk-Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon’s 5K Race.

This 8th annual event began in 2007 with 25 participants and spearheaded by Luke’s mother, Evelyn Anderson, a former South Setauket,

resident, who wanted to celebrate her son’s life by running a race in his honor.

In 2013, Luke ran with his older brother, Patrick, and their mom, and this year the sports-enthusiastic family, including younger sisters, Ciara and Shannon and dad Todd, drove from their New Milford CT. home the night before to rest up in a local hotel and get to the start line with 609 other participants – onequarter of them supporters of Friends of Karen.

“It was amazing to see the support of all these people, running, walking and

raising funds for Friends of Karen,” said Evelyn.

“And heartwarming for our family that we have an opportunity to give back to this organization in this fun way.”

Since 1978, Friends of Karen has been providing emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with a lifethreatening illness and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. The organization has helped more than 12,900 children in the New York tri-state region.

On Saturday, June 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its 2nd Annual Alzheimer’s Regatta & Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club, located at Head of Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Presenting sponsors for the event are the Sagamore Yacht Club and Oakcliff Sailing Center.

Although there is no entry fee, all registrants are encouraged to help raise money for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. Once again, Dawn Riley, Executive Director, Oakcliff Sailing Center, and Board Member, US Sailing, will be in attendance. Ms. Riley was the 2002 IC45 World Champion and 1992 America’s Cup winner.

Additionally, in her third of four Cups, she was CEO and Captain of America True, the only woman to manage an America’s Cup sailing team.

In addition to the Regatta, there will be the Paddling for Poker

event, which is part of the Regatta, to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support.

Registration is at 1 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West End Avenue in Oyster Bay. Participants paddle to five boats; at each boat, they receive a card. Once they receive five cards, they have made their poker hand. The highest hand wins a prize to be awarded at the awards dinner. All participants must finish by 4 p.m. This event is open to all kayakers and paddleboarders.

An awards dinner will take place at 6 p.m. with live entertainment provided by the Old Salts Band.

This year’s theme for the dinner is “Red, White, and Blue.” Awards will be given for Highest Fundraising Individual and Highest Fundraising Team in each category. In addition, the winning poker hand will be announced. There is no charge for dinner to all participants who raise a minimum of $100.

Alzheimer’s Regatta will have a special treat for those who want to watch the Regatta and Paddling for Poker: a guided tour of historic Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. The Vessel Christeen is a 40foot Gaff Rigged Sloop that was built in 1883 and completely restored in 1999. She is the oldest Oyster Sloop in America and is a National Historic Landmark. The Christeen will sail from the Sagamore Yacht Club at noon and again at 2 p.m.

For those who wish to participate but do not own a sailboat, paddleboard or kayak, rentals are available.

Donating Their Time For the third consecutive year, Goldman Sachs volunteers will work with the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s corps of volunteer gardeners on May 19th to prepare, plant and mulch the Museum’s large organic vegetable garden.

The project includes preparation, weeding and planting the flower gardens around the Vanderbilt Mansion. The bountiful harvest from the organic garden is donated each year to a local food pantry.

Volunteers from the Goldman Sachs Community Team Works (CTW) initiative will work with the Vanderbilt’s own volunteer gardeners. In the past two years, the firm’s volunteers have expanded the vegetable garden and, with a corporate grant, have installed an advanced drip-irrigation system that has increased the yield per plot.

CTW is Goldman Sachs’ global initiative that allows the firm’s employees one day off each year to volunteer in team-based projects coordinated with local nonprofit organizations.

In 2013, more than 25,000 volunteers from 50 offices around the world partnered with over 900 nonprofit organizations on a diverse array of community service projects.

The 43-acre estate was built in the early twentieth century by William K. Vanderbilt II, greatgrandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, founder of the New York Central Railroad and builder of Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the estate includes a spectacular, 24-room, Spanish-Revival style mansion. The museum complex includes a marine museum as well as naturalhistory, ethnographicartifact and animalhabitat galleries, and the newly renovated, state-ofthe-art Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium.

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School has received a Reward School Dissemination Grant from the New York State Education Department in the amount of $75,000. The high school was eligible to apply for the grant based on being named a Reward School by the state for the previous two years, a distinction given to those schools with outstanding student achievement or growth over the past three years.

The grant money will be used by the district to refine and enhance the school’s own best practices, including devoting a portion of the funds to professional development

for staff. In addition, the grant will allow the district an opportunity to share its practices with lower-performing schools throughout the state.

As part of the grant opportunity, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Gary Furman and Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Principal Dr. Vincent Mulieri traveled to Albany in early May to present to their peers on what the high school has done for interventions in English language arts and math.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to share our best practices with other districts throughout the

The Elwood UFSD Board of Education (BOE) and the Elwood Teachers’ Alliance (ETA) are pleased to announce that they have approved a three-year successor agreement to the labor contract that expires on June 30th, 2014.

The new agreement, which runs through June 30th, 2017, is the result of a meaningful negotiation and collaboration between the Board and the ETA, and sends a clear message that our teachers are committed to our students and the needs of all stakeholders in the Elwood School Community.

The net result of the agreement will slow the rate of total salary growth, which is the most prominent financial concern facing all school districts aside from unfunded New York State mandates.

The new contract also provides compensation terms that are more in alignment with today’s restricted revenue environment. A salary increase of one half of one percent (0.5%) will

be provided in each year of the new agreement. A step ‘freeze’ is in place for next year and half-step increases are called for in years two and three (steps are movements ‘up’ the salary schedule based upon accrued years of service) of the agreement.

“With so many contract negotiations dragging out in districts across the Island, we are extremely pleased in Elwood to have teachers who put the education of children first and agreed to a new contract that reflects the current financial reality and avoids a protracted negotiation process,” said Board of Education President Joseph Fusaro.

“This is a testament to the mutual respect we have with our faculty and their commitment to the students of our community.”

In addition to the aforementioned provisions, the new agreement calls for new language or terms on a variety of lesser issues, including: involuntary staff transfers, use of personal

days for unforeseen calendar changes, sick leave borrowing and donation, personal leave, course approval and distance learning, among several others.

Mr. Peter Scordo, Superintendent of Schools, noted that due to the tax cap environment, this agreement is a critical development for future fiscal planning. “Salaries in our enterprise, like most businesses, represent the largest cost center in the budget,” he said. “Creating a sustainable school district budget within the tax cap that preserves the programs and services our community wants is our greatest challenge.

This new agreement is a big push in the right direction.”

“We know it is critical to work together to achieve outcomes that serve the greatest good,” said Lorelei Stephens, President of the ETA. “Our membership is pleased with this agreement and appreciates the ongoing support of the Elwood community.”

Resource Center Underway Suffolk County and the Town of Huntington are joining to create the Huntington Station Opportunity Resource Center, a facility where a variety of County and Town services will be offered to residents in need.

The services will be located at 1264 New York Avenue, as well as the Huntington Business Incubator at 1268 New York Avenue in Huntington Station. The center will provide employment counseling; programs and assistance to address unemployment, underemployment and impediments to securing employment; employment leads; vocational, trade and computer training; internship opportunities; entrepreneurial support; technical business assistance; and informational seminars.

In addition, once a week, representatives from the County’s Social Services and Labor Departments will be at the Center. All services will be available in English and Spanish “Ensuring that all residents have access to County services is of the utmost importance to my administration,” said County Executive Steve Bellone.

“By working in partnership with the Town of Huntington, we are making it easier and more convenient for people to take advantage of the County programs designed to assist them. I thank Supervisor Frank Petrone, Councilwoman Tracey Edwards and Legislator William Spencer Legislator for their continued advocacy and leadership in ensuring services reach those who are in

need.”

The Social Services Department representatives will offer on-the-spot food stamp enrollment and Medicaid enrollment as well as eligibility screening and referrals to public assistance (TANF). They will also provide referrals to shelters, transportation, and subsidized childcare to eligible residents as appropriate.

The Labor Department representatives will offer on-the-spot resume and job search assistance as well as eligibility screening and referrals to vocational and work readiness training programs. They will also provide referrals to GED, Adult Basic Education, and English as a Second Language classes to eligible residents as appropriate.

The Town’s Community Development Agency, working with the Town, its school districts and community stakeholders, will develop a leadership committee for the Huntington Station area comprised of private, not-for-profit and public leaders to provide community mapping and coordinate services available to the residents of Huntington Station. The leadership committee will identify unaddressed needs and develop a plan to coordinate services and engage the appropriate stakeholders to address identified needs in coordination with Suffolk County.

“This center will serve a dual purpose of bringing services to people who need them and people to a

community that is continuing its economic revitalization.

I look forward to working with Suffolk County to help people find jobs and launch businesses in Huntington Station,” said Supervisor Frank Petrone.

“When I took office earlier this year, I said that jobs was going to be my number one priority – helping people find them and helping them obtain the skills to improve their economic situation,” Councilwoman Tracey Edwards said. “Partnering with the County in this center will create synergies to make this center more useful for our residents than if each of us tried to do it separately.”

“I am very excited about the partnership between Suffolk County and the Huntington Community Development Agency,” stated Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D. “The resources which will be made available to Huntington residents will provide valuable information about job assistance, housing assistance, business assistance and much more. Teen Poets Recognized Eleven teen poets from area high schools were honored recently by the Town of Huntington as winners of the Annual Poetry For The HART competition.

A distinguished panel of poets selected the 11 winners from 201 poems submitted by 178 different teens. The winners were recognized at an April 30 program at the Walt Whitman Birthplace, during which they received certificates from the Town Board and participated in a poetry reading with adult poet mentor David Lawton and special guest Gae Polisner. Lawton is a poet, musician and actor originally from the Boston area. His poetry collection, Sharp Blue Stream, is available from Three Rooms Press. Dreaming of walking around in art museums and cobblestone streets blanketed with history, Rachel’s wish was to go to Europe. Proud of her family history, Rachel and her family will be headed to Rome, Italy for a 9-day journey.

“Knowing that I had this wish gave me

something to look forward to while finishing up my treatment,” said Ragone.

Rachel completed her treatment in January and was medically cleared to travel. “We are going to Rome, there is so much to do there, and I can’t wait to eat the food!”

“A wish gives the patient something to hold on to and look forward to during some of the

darkest moments,” said Lauren Sharaby, MS, CCLS, Certified Child Life Specialist, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

“Make-A-Wish gives these kids control over a situation; making a wish gives our patients power, hope and improves their quality of life.”

Sharaby, who attended the Make-A-Wish dinner,

works firsthand with a lot of the patients who grant wishes through MakeA-Wish. “It lets their imagination run wild while taking the focus off of needles and medicine and hair loss. It gives these children the opportunity to be a kid again and it renews their spirit so they can continue to fight for a cure.”

Dr. McGovern along with Robert Parker, MD, Director, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, who accepted the award on behalf of Stony Brook Children’s, are members of the advisory board for Make-A-Wish, Suffolk County.

“The Make-a-Wish dinner is always a wonderful event, and this night was no exception,” said Robert Parker, MD, Director, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “I think what Make-a-Wish does is build memories, for the child and their families.

During the evening, children with lifethreatening medical conditions from across Suffolk County were granted wishes - and a few were past or current patients from Stony Brook Children’s like 17 year-old Rachel Ragone.

In March of 2013, the Manorville resident was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a primary bone cancer that affects mainly children and adolescents.

For almost a year, Rachel was receiving treatment at Stony Brook University Cancer Center under the supervision of Dr. Parker.

In June of 2013, Rachel was given the opportunity

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital was presented with the Medical Visionary Award on Thursday, May 8th, at Make-AWish Suffolk County’s 20th Annual Bouquet Of Wishes Spring Dinner. The event took place at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook and hosted over 800 guests.

The Foundation presented this award to Stony Brook Children’s for the institution’s meritorious leadership in advanced and innovative pediatric specialty care.
