Walking for Wishes

or the 10th consecutive year, Washington Drive Primary and Thomas J. Lahey elementary schools in the Harborfields Central School District hosted their annual Walk for a Wish fundraising event to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The well-attended event raised more than $22,000, granting the wishes of 14 year-old Joseph, a child from Huntington Station who struggles with congenital heart defects, and two other Make-A-Wish children.

Lynch Veterans Place Shelter in Yaphank, thanks to the generosity of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Suffolk. The computers will be used to help Veterans residing at the shelter to search for and secure employment.

“This opens up a whole new world for our Veterans at the John J. Lynch Shelter,” commented Wilkens Young, Director of Suffolk County United Veterans, which runs the shelter. “They can now enroll in online vocational and educational training programs, search for employment, prepare resumes, and submit job applications. Berland delivered reminiscences of Buonpane. His son, Mark, speaking on behalf of the family, spoke of his father’s efforts in creating Veterans Plaza, first as a memorial to Huntington residents who served in World War II, and expanding it in subsequent years to honor those who served in the Korean, Vietnamese and Gulf Wars.

Buonpane served in the Army during the Korean War and later worked as an engineer at the Grumman Corp., where he helped design parts of the Lunar Module for the Apollo

space program. He served as Post Commander of the Northport American Legion Post #694 and as a member of its board of directors. In 1995, he was named chair of the Town’s Veterans Advisory Board, a post he held until his death.

Also joining Council Members Cuthbertson and Berland at the ceremony were Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia, Tax Receiver Ester Bivona, Assemblymen Andrew Raia and Chad Lupinacci and Buonpane’s wife, Beatrice, and daughters Karen Buonpane and Nancy Chang.

Students at Elwood Middle School in the Elwood Union Free School District received words of inspiration when paralympian and motivational speaker Rohan Murphy dropped by to speak to them during the district’s Special Education PTA Disabilities Awareness Week.

Murphy was born with a severely deformed lower body and his legs were amputated when he was 4 years-old. In the eighth grade, his determination to succeed despite his disabilities became evident to his school’s wrestling coach. After joining the wrestling team at East Islip, Murphy went on to finish his high school through Friday between career as a three-time 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at All-League and two-time Legislator D’Amaro’s All-County wrestler. After district office, located at: high school, he showed up 130 West Jericho at tryouts at Penn State Turnpike and earned a spot on the Huntington Station, wrestling squad under New York 11746 coach Troy Sunderland.

During his presentation, he emphasized to students that they should not have any excuses for failing to reach their goals and to keep pushing forward despite difficulties. Murphy dazzled the audience with feats of strength, such as

walking back and forth across the stage on his hands, and performing pushups while clapping his hands.

Following the assembly, Murphy visited students in their classes to answer questions and take pictures. The students learned about perseverance and to never allow others to tell them what they can and cannot accomplish.

Rosie Rosemarie Kupencow – “Rosie,” as I always affectionately called her – was the very first friend I made when I started working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, just about 11 years ago.

The resident proofreader, she introduced herself to me right away, and made sure I felt welcome in this new, unfamiliar setting, showing me the ins and outs of the newspaper she had come to call home for close to a decade at that point.

In addition to being hired as an editorial assistant, I was brought on to help Rose, my new friend, with some of the weekly proofreading duties.

Armed with her magnifying glass and a stash of green pens – “only green,” she would say, “NEVER make corrections with anything else” – she quickly took me under her wing, and we became close companions, often taking breaks together outside in whatever patches of sun we could find, and occasionally heading out for lunch outings at Nathan’s, one of our favorite destinations.

She would always order the fish and chips from Arthur Treacher’s, then laugh hysterically as I looked on in horror, marveling at why someone would go to Nathan’s for anything other than a hotdog.

After a short time, we realized that not only had I attended high school with her daughter, Jennifer, but we now lived just a few short blocks away from each other, and we began to carpool frequently to and from work.

On one memorable return trip, during a rather heavy rainstorm, I infamously “drowned” my car during an ill-fated attempt to navigate down

her flooded street, despite her repeated warnings that it probably wasn’t going to end well.

She never did let me live that one down, deservedly so.

But that was Rose, always dispensing advice – some solicited, some not so much – and serving as the unofficial “work mother” to many of the younger employees.

In that capacity, a coworker and I took her along as a “chaperone” of sorts on my very first trip to Adventureland not so many years ago. As we made our way from one ride to another, taking care not to miss any, the air was filled with the sounds of screaming – not ours, but of our beloved Rosie, yelling, “Get me OFF this thing!!!” and “Why did I let you two talk me into this???”

I don’t think I have ever laughed so hysterically in my life.

Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to any amusement park. But the memories, well, those last a lifetime. (As does the framed photo of the three of us plummeting over “Adventure Falls” at the moment of impact, a priceless reminder of all the fun that was had that day.)

Just last week, Rose lost her battle with cancer, leaving a giant void here at South Bay – and in my heart. Her selfless determination to continue on over the past year was a perfect example of the type of person she was, always putting others first while forging ahead.

What an incredible person, one that is dearly missed by so many.

I’ll miss her sitting in the “friend” chair on the other side of my desk, coming to chat about life and work and family and friends and everything in between.

I’ll miss our goodnatured teasing back and forth... her imitations of my ballet positions... her self-deprecating analysis of her “fashion” sense – “don’t have a hair clip, use a paper clip!”... our phone conversations – in spite of her staunch refusal to ever get a cell phone, and her insistence on keeping important phone numbers on a crumbled piece of paper in her pocketbook… just seeing her smiling face every day at the office.

But mostly, I’ll miss my special friend.

This past December, in celebration of her birthday, Rose and I went out to dinner. She may not have been feeling like her old self, but it was truly like old times.

For over three hours, we sat and talked, just the two of us, reminiscing about the highlights and lowlights of our decade working together, chatting about the latest happenings in our lives… and we laughed, hysterically, about many of the same stories recounted here – and countless others, some not suitable for publication in a family newspaper!

We could have continued talking for three more hours, easily; it seemed that neither of us wanted that night, that moment, to end.

I will always treasure it.

How lucky I was to have her in my life – there to guide the way as I began this new chapter all those years ago… and there to see me through the journey every step of the way since.

Rose, you will never be forgotten – not by me, and not by those who had the wonderful pleasure of knowing you, of loving you, of having you touch their lives.

May you be at peace now.

Research Center Launches Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) today announced the Center for Therapeutics Research (CTR) project, a new $75 million initiative to apply the Laboratory’s biomedical expertise toward advancing therapeutics for genetic diseases.

New York State is providing $25 million for construction and equipment funds to modernize an existing

facility to house the Center.

The renovation project will update the Demerec Laboratory, built in 1953, which has been home to the laboratories of four of CSHL’s eight Nobel Prize winners.

The well-attended event raised more than $22,000, granting the wishes of 14 year-old Joseph, a child from Huntington Station who struggles with congenital heart defects, and two other Make-AWish children.

“Granting wishes to children at Make-A-Wish is an important event for the Harborfields community because we are encouraging children to be empathetic and supportive of other children,” said Walk for a Wish coordinator and Thomas

J. Lahey teacher Diane Brown. “Our students are actively involved in this community service project, making it a meaningful experience.”

Leading up to the Walk for a Wish event, students, respectively, held bake sales and garage sales to raise money for this annual charity fundraiser and donations were contributed through various fundraising efforts.

With costs totaling more than $7,000, this marked the most funds raised prior to the walk event.

Sponsored jointly by the Walk for a Wish Committee of Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, the Acts of Kindness Committee at Washington Drive Primary School and the schools’ respective PTAs, more than 900 students, faculty,

community members and Harborfields sports teams rallied together to walk the track at Harborfields High School. The event also featured a facepainting booth ran by high school students and a dunk tank. Additionally, nonperishable food items were collected to support the Harborfields food pantry.

Throughout the past 10 years, the event has raised more than $150,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Harborfields community is responsible for granting the wishes of approximately 20 children.

“When the Harborfields students come together to work on a goal, it builds a sense of community,” said Brown. “Walk for a Wish is a celebration of the students’ accomplishment towards this goal.”

Spotlight on Autism As part of Northport High School’s inaugural Autism Awareness Week, which was held from April 4th-8th, clubs collaborated on a series of projects.

This included various activities in the Commons, such as a photo booth, an Autism Awareness tree and t-shirt sales. The Commons was decorated with autism facts on blue paper as part of the Autism Awareness Light It Up Blue Day-initiative.

From Monday to Friday, students and staff put their names on puzzle pieces that were added to the Autism Awareness tree.

On April 7th, a panel of speakers, including Michael Comisky, school psychologist; Autism advocates from the educational community, and students Jameson Bruno and Jack Leonard conducted a deeper discussion about Autism.

The week culminated with

everyone wearing blue on Friday and posing for a photo to show solidarity.

Nearly a quarter century ago, the Autism Society launched a nationwide effort in April to promote autism awareness, inclusion and selfdetermination for all, and assure that each person with ASD is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life.

In early April, a team of 12 students from Harborfields High School and Oldfield Middle School traveled to SUNY Old Westbury to compete in the 32nd annual American Association of Teachers of Italian on Long Island Poetry, Iron Chef and Trivia Competition.

Under the advisement of teachers Dr. Craig Butler and Rosalia Sinatra, students enrolled in an Italian class went up against

hundreds of talented students from across Long Island. Competing in all three categories, the team of Harborfields students, collectively, placed well in the competition.

Students in the trivia contest, led by junior Connor Stewart, claimed first place, while students competing in the iron chef challenge, headed by seventh-grader Jake Minerva, earned third place, and seventh-grader

Juliana Bertolini led her team to a third-place victory in the level 1 poetry recitation contest.

The Elwood Union Free School District is proud to boast that Elwood-John H. Glenn High School has been named to The Washington Post’s annual list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools in the United States. In this year’s Challenge Index, Elwood-John H. Glenn is ranked No. 82 in New York State.

“We are very pleased with the Elwood-John Glenn High School’s recognition from The Washington Post for America’s Most Challenging High Schools,” said Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Gary Furman.

In order to calculate an index score for each school, researchers took the total

number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year and divide it by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June.

“Our improved ranking is directly related to the efforts and actions of our students taking the opportunity to participate in AP courses as a result of the open enrollment program,” said Dr. Furman.

“Our teachers have provided the instruction and encouragement to allow students to be successful on AP exams, as 86 percent of students taking AP exams in 2015 scored a 3 or higher.

Since the 2012-13 school year, there has been a 55

percent increase in the number of students taking AP courses.”

Public schools that achieved a ratio of at least 1.00, meaning they had as many tests in 2015 as they had graduates, were put on the national list. Schools are ranked in order of ratio.

“We know that the teachers in Harley Avenue Primary School, James H. Boyd Intermediate School and Elwood Middle School are key to the success of JGHS, as they have provided students with the foundation to be successful,” Dr. Furman noted. “We are very proud of the administrators, teachers, and students for this accomplishment.”

For the secondconsecutive year, the Elwood Union Free School District Special Education Parent-Teacher Association sponsored a wheelchair basketball game as a culmination to its Disabilities Awareness Week.

Leading up to the game,

students throughout the district participated in a number of special assemblies and activities that celebrated disabilities awareness. Uniting the Elwood community, students, faculty and administrator rallied together as they competed against members of the

New York Rolling Fury, a youth wheelchair basketball program, in a friendly wheelchair basketball tournament.

Fans cheered from the bleachers as members of the Elwood team and New York Rolling Fury moved the basketball across the court and into the basket.

Centennial Golf Classic Huntington Hospital, part of Northwell Health, will host its Centennial Golf Classic on Wednesday, June 1st, 2016 at the Piping Rock and The Creek Golf Clubs in Locust Valley.

Favorite Poems

Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) celebrated its inaugural Favorite Poem Project: Multicultural Voices on April 17th, at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site.

The Favorite Poem Project was designed by former US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky in 2000 to encourage Americans of all ages and from all walks of life to share their favorite poem (a classic poem, not self-written) with a brief explanation of why it was significant.

WWBA followed Pinsky’s initiative and put out a nationwide call for Favorite Poems, and received over 300 submissions.

At the community celebration held during April Poetry Month, Executive Director Cynthia Shor welcomed more than 100 guests, ages 5 through 85 years.

Shor said, “We found that in any rhyme scheme, in any language, or recited by individuals of any age, poetry is still thriving in modern America. We received poems from poetry lovers across the nation, and 21 guest speakers read a representative selection of favorite poems.

The themes were universal, inspirational, and many were about love. Each poem was a favorite of someone who poignantly shared their stories of the poems.”

Elisa DiStefano, award winning reporter for Cablevision News12 Long Island, emceed the event and recited one of her favorite Shel Silverstein poems. Board

President Dr. William T. Walter led the community reading, and began with Walt Whitman’s favorite poem, “The Midnight Visitor,” written by Anacreon. Walter then read his own favorite poem, “Abou Ben Adhem” by Leigh Hunt, observing that he held fond memories of his mother reading this to his brother and him at bedtime.

Community readers included an engineer, a mathematician, a museum director, educators, artists, students and three elected officials. One poem was read

(31), with his poem, “The Road Not Taken” (14). Top favorites were Maya Angelou (16), Whitman (16), Emily Dickinson (12), Langston Hughes (12), Rudyard Kipling (8), with Shakespeare, Poe, and Tennyson at 5 each, followed by Joyce Kilmer (4) and Mary Oliver (3).

WWBA also videotaped the event for use as a unique archival document for students, visitors, historians, and literary scholars. The Favorite Poem Project: Multicultural Voices is part of the WWBA 2016 Program Series, Democratic Vistas: Voice of Democracy, sponsored by the NY Council for the Humanities.

Shor concluded, “We applaud the community members who proved poetry is still thriving in modern America, We in Spanish, and the reading concluded with a 9 year old were delighted with the literary range from the classic home school student reciting Whitman’s three verse to the modern. We celebrated the poets who inspired poem, “O Captain! My Captain!,” from memory. the generations, and shared the poems that touched our Themost popular poet submission was Robert Frost hearts.”
