“It is your decisions, and not your conditions, that determine your destiny.” - Tony Robbins This morning I was speaking to someone very important in my life and I expressed that I felt as though something was holding me down, making me feel heavy and sad. Yes, I was feeling a bit depressed today. I’ve never been completely comfortable baring my soul to people in my life, instead feeling more at home in the position of helper as opposed to helpee.

When, I myself, am struggling, I will rarely venture to confide in someone, and when I do, I expect a lot of the typical platitudes and that’s okay. I know that just because someone loves you, it doesn’t mean they are always going to have just the right words at just the right time. That’s been my job (literally). But I have to say, this one shocked and amazed me. I’ll never doubt the value of a good heart to heart pep talk again.

I think I said, “I can’t do my column today, I just can’t. I’m feeling too down in the dumps

(yes, it happens). I thought I was going to be fully supported in throwing in the towel for the week. If I’m being honest, that is what I thought I wanted. Instead, he said to me, “Do you know why I wake up at 4 AM each morning to go to the gym before I start my day?” I was tempted to say, “Um, because you’re crazy?”

I get up at 6 AM, and as you all know, 6 AM to 7 AM is my sacred morning hour, but 4 AM would never happen. A girl needs her sleep! My friend continued, “I get up at 4 AM each day to go to the gym and purposely lift weight that drags me down and offers me resistance so that I can overcome that resistance, lift myself back up and build more muscle.”

I knew he was a workout devotee, but I must admit, I never thought of it as a metaphor for life. And to think I’ve watched every Rocky movie ever made.

I’ve had plenty of moments in my life where things were so smooth and I was so ridiculously blessed that being happy, enthusiastic and inspired was a no-brainer. What I have humbly

come to realize is that when you preach from a privileged soapbox, you can only reach so far. Yes, the last several months have been filled with some interesting ups and downs and some things that haven’t felt so pleasant. They have also been filled with massive growth and perspective, and yes, I have been developing a lot of new muscles.

I was not let off the hook this morning. The beautiful thing is that not having to write was what I wanted, but not what I needed in order to grow. I needed to be stretched past my comfort zone today, lovingly yet firmly.

We all fall into that trap at times, where we are looking for excuses to be less than great.

At that moment this morning, someone loved me enough to remind me that although my reason to not want to write this particular column was valid, it would not take me where I needed, and ultimately wanted, to go. Pushing past some temporary discomfort to get the job done would.

Dirty Rice is a fun and variant rice dish, with plenty of room for improvisation.

Even better, you can make a vegan version or incorporate sausage into the dish.

What You Will Need

1 cup White Rice 1 generous dash of turmeric 1 dash of black pepper 1 dash of sea salt Finely chopped half red pepper Finely chopped half green pepper Finely chopped portabello mushrooms 1/4 cup lentils 1/4 cup black eyed peas 1/2 cup green peas Finely chopped sausage (whatever kind you prefer) to taste (optional)

Preparation Soak lentils and black eyed peas together in a medium stovetop pot of tepid water for 30 minutes to soften them. Then rinse them and place them in fresh water, letting them simmer on medium heat for approx. 45 minutes or until they are soft, but still intact.

Set aside and cover to retain heat.

Boil and then simmer rice, according

to box instructions. Rice typically boils vigorously for 1 minute and then simmers on low heat with a closed lid for approx. 25 minutes.

Chop up all veggies and steam on the stove top until they are all tender, yet firm. Add and mix turmeric, black pepper and salt into rice as it is cooking. Rice should turn yellow.

Microwave frozen, steam-able green peas for speed.

Add all vegetables, along with lentils and black eyed peas, into the rice and stir. If desired, cut up your sausage into round disked slices and then cut those slices into fourths. If pre-cooked, add into rice mixture. If not, cook first and then add.

Let entire rice mixture continue to heat on low heat with lid, on the stove top for 20 more minutes, and enjoy!

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization.

BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child.

This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins.

BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

The members of BACA are all volunteers that do not receive payment of any kind, and they also pay for all their own expenses. They will tell you their payment is far more significant than money. Their payment is seeing first hand how their involvement empowers children and contributes to their

Although BACA Members have witnessed how well their process works for many years, no one needs to take their word for it any longer because a four year independent study by professionals in the field, recently revealed that BACA children achieve “statistically significant improvements” in all behavioral and emotional categories. This greatly contributes to expediting the overall healing of the child on many levels, so their fear is quickly replaced with confidence. This conclusive study was published in the International Journal of “Evaluation and Program Planning” and can be found in its entirety on the BACA website.

To date, their success with abused children has enabled BACA to spread to 17 countries, 47 states and thousands of members.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a Cleared Supporter, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member.

The Northport-East Northport School District honored two of its outstanding students at the Board of Education meeting on April 12.

Seniors Emma Canfora and Shea Cronin were recognized as the Rotary and Health Education Department Student of the Month and Physical Education Department Student of the Month, respectively.

Mark Dantuono, director of health, physical education and athletics, presented both students to the board with an overflow of praise for each student, and how they exemplified excellence in each department.

“Within health class especially, Emma has made countless impressionable impacts on the lives of her peers,” said Mr. Dantuono, “sharing openly and encouraging them to persevere through hard times — especially

when struggling with maintaining mental health.”

Academically, Emma is a hardworking student who is always striving to reach her full potential.

She has volunteered for both local and national political campaigns, spent a semester as a senate Page in Washington, D.C. and aspires to eventually make mental h e a l t h for more accessible for all, eliminating the stigma it carries.

Three-sport athlete Shea Cronin was praised for the energy, skill and willingness to help others

that she displays on a regular basis. “She is extremely coachable and is often the driving force behind her teams’ success,” said Mr. Danutono. “Her coaches all agree that she is a shining example sportsmanship and the good in today’s youth.”

Students from Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently put their architectural skills to the test on April 12.

Third graders in Noreen Paccione’s and Diane Brown’s classes were challenged to build weather-proofed structures, but in an attempt to engage students in taking control of their own learning, were given no further direction.

With the knowledge they already had, students worked together to build structures that could withstand both a hurricane and tornado.

“We didn’t explain to them what a foundation does, or how weather proofing a building keeps water out,” said Ms. Paccione. “With the knowledge they had of both powerful phenomena, they had to figure out to combat them.”

Students congregated outside to test each structure.

Groups presented their designs to the class, explaining the reasoning behind the materials they used and why they believed it would be safe.

“We build our house on a platform so the area below would flood, but none of the house would flood,”

one group explained.

Each structure then went through hurricane conditions, which consisted of large cups of water being dumped overtop. If the structures foundation didn’t flood, it passed the first test. Next, a giant leaf blower was turned on the structure to test whether it could withstand a tornado. Most

of the groups passed both tests, and they were very proud of their work.

“Students respond positively when they’re encouraged to take control of their learning.” said Ms. Paccione, “And we try to provide as many opportunities as we can to allow students to be handson with what we teach.”

Students at Washington Drive Primary School had the unique opportunity to practice their reading skills on a sweet therapy dog named Moby on April 17. This gentle golden retriever travels to schools all over Long Island with his trainer and owner Lance Motkin, helping students experience a relaxed, dog-friendly reading environment.

The afternoon of Moby’s visit was filled with other dog-themed

activities as well and took place in Emily Gutheil’s kindergarten classroom.

In addition to the reading to Moby station, children rotated through four other activities, such as learning to draw a cartoon dog and dog bingo.

Earlier in the year, Mrs. Gutheil told her students that they’d be reading to Moby and it motivated them to hone their skills in order to be prepared. When the time came, students confidently approached

their new furry friend and took turns reading aloud to him. In this comfortable environment, many students didn’t feel the pressure of reading out loud to their classmates and were able to confidently practice their reading skills.

“Oh, he was definitely listening, and he even smiled while I was reading,” said Ted, one of Mrs. Gutheil‘s students. “I think he liked the story.”

HUNTINGTON TOWN RESIDENT Q&A WHAT THE ONGOING NORTHPORT TAX TRIAL MEANS FOR YOU

The Long Island Power Authority is challenging the Town of Huntington’s $3.4 billion tax assessment of the Northport Power Plant in Suffolk County Supreme Court. Here are some common questions and answers on what this means for you.

WHY IS LIPA CHALLENGING THE ASSESSMENT ON THE NORTHPORT POWER PLANT? With annual taxes of $84 million, the Northport plant is the highest taxed property in the United States – more than Disneyland and the Empire State Building combined. LIPA has sought a fair assessment for nearly a decade. Like any responsible homeowner or business who is overpaying, LIPA is now challenging the assessment so that an independent, third-party – a court – can determine the plant’s fair value.

WHY IS THE NORTHPORT POWER PLANT’S TAX BILL SO HIGH? The Town of Huntington has significantly overvalued the plant. For example, the Caithness Power Plant in Yaphank produces 50% more energy than the Northport plant each year with a tax bill of $9.6 million. Northport’s $84 million annual tax bill results from the Town’s $3.4 billion valuation, which exceeds that of a brand-new power plant built on Long Island.

HOW MUCH AM I PAYING IN MY ELECTRIC BILL FOR HIGH POWER PLANT TAXES? The typical Town of Huntington resident pays approximately 5% of their electric bill, or $85 a year, to support the school districts and local governments surrounding four of Long Island’s oldest power plants, including the Northport Plant. 2% of your electric bill goes directly to the Northport community, mostly to the Northport – East Northport Union Free School District.

WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF THE NORTHPORT POWER PLANT? Energy production at the Northport plant has declined by nearly 80% since 1999.

The plant uses 50-year-old technology, which is more expensive to operate than modern power plants. As new, cleaner sources of energy are added to the electric grid, the use of the plant will continue to decline. Bringing the taxes down to a more sustainable level will better position the plant to continue to operate and will help attract future clean energy investment to the site.

WHAT HAPPENS IF LIPA WINS IN COURT? LIPA estimates that a fair valuation of the Northport plant would immediately increase the school taxes for a typical resident of the Northport-East Northport School District by over $200 per month. In addition, the Town of Huntington could owe LIPA’s customers over $650 million in tax refunds dating back to 2010 for over-assessing the plant. That’s over $5,000 per Huntington household.

WHAT IS LIPA’S SOLUTION? LIPA has offered a fair settlement to the Town of Huntington to phase down the taxes on the Northport plant from $84 million to $42 million per year over the remaining term of our contract to purchase power from the plant, which expires in April 2028.

That would provide the residents of the Northport-East Northport School District with time to adjust to a more sustainable level of tax payments while waiving the Town’s $650 million tax refund liability to LIPA’s customers. LIPA estimates that the average household in the Northport-East Northport School District would see an increase of $13 per month in their school tax bill for each year of the settlement. That would be a cumulative increase of $117 per month by 2028. School district residents would still benefit from substantial tax payments not received by other districts in the Town of Huntington – continuing to hold down school tax rates for the Northport community.

The increase for other Town residents would be less than $1 per month.

HOW DOES LIPA’S SOLUTION COMPARE TO THE PORT JEFFERSON POWER PLANT? The Town of Brookhaven and Village of Port Jefferson accepted LIPA’s settlement offer for the Port Jefferson Power Plant last year. The Port Jefferson plant has experienced a similar decline in usage, uses similar dated technology, and has similar operating costs as the Northport plant. The offer to the Town of Huntington for the Northport plant is the same as the Port Jefferson settlement.

IS LIPA’S SETTLEMENT OFFER STILL AVAILABLE? The settlement offer is still available, but the trial to determine the fair tax bill on the plant is ongoing and there’s not much time left. LIPA would like to help the Northport community adjust to a more sustainable level of tax payments on the plant over the remaining term of our power purchase contract. The longer a settlement is delayed, the shorter the transition period for the community until our power contract ends in April 2028.

WILL I SEE THE SAVINGS FROM A REDUCTION OF TAXES ON THE NORTHPORT PLANT? Yes. LIPA is run on a not-for-profit basis. Our customers pay our actual cost to buy electricity and deliver it to your home or business, with any changes automatically reflected in your monthly electric bill.

WHO HAS THE AUTHORITY TO SETTLE THIS CASE? WHAT CAN I DO? LIPA and the Town of Huntington are the parties that have the legal authority to come to a fair settlement that puts Northport’s taxes on a more sustainable path. For more information, go to lipower.org.

Members also encouraged their classmates to carry these materials with them on a regular basis to form habits in using them.

Last year, the E-Team worked in collaboration with the CCE to push the Suffolk County Bag Bill into place and this year they’re working on discouraging use of harmful materials like disposable plastics and Styrofoam. It has been reported that approximately 500,000,000 plastic straws are used each day in the United States, and last year more

than 11,000 of those straws were collected on New York’s shorelines.

“We’re extremely passionate about changing the way people think about and use plastics,” said AJ, a senior E-Team member. “People always say ‘Well, how much can one person really do?’ but that’s the thing — if we can encourage one person, and then another person, and then those people encourage others, it’s a chain reaction. Boom, we’re changing the world.”

By the end of the week, over 620 pledges were made at Northport High School thanks to the E-Team’s efforts.

Taking Control of Wellness Northport High School hosted a Wellness Week in collaboration with the Northport-East Northport Drug and Alcohol Task Force during the week of April 15. This week focused on improving mental, emotional, physical and social health throughout the school community.

Each day different activities and workshops

were planned for students and faculty to attend.

Along with fun stressrelieving activities like stress ball making and lava-bracelet crafting, informative and hands-on workshops were hosted.

Topics included the Art of Empathy, meditation, yoga, martial arts, a drum circle and more. Students also heard from agencies

such as the Safe Center and Project Heal, who talked openly about hard topics such as eating disorders, substance abuse recovery and maintaining healthy relationships.

“Originally, the idea for Wellness Week came from our students,” said Mr. Anthony Ferrandino, the school’s social worker and co-chair of the district’s

Drug and Alcohol Task Force. “They were the ones who asked to show more awareness towards wellness and mental health, to sharpen coping skills, to break the stigma surrounding mental health…so we took action, and the rest of the student population has been incredibly responsive.”

Additionally, a new mindfulness room was opened at the beginning of the week. This quiet room, filled with soft lighting, salt

lamps and bean bag chairs, resides on the upper level of the library and helps students find a moment of peace whenever they need it.

“Over the last few years, we’ve noticed a larger number of students who seek refuge in the library, eyes closed, earbuds in, just trying to find a little peace in an increasingly stressful school day,” said high school librarian Debra Cavaliere. “So the mindfulness room was

born out of that need, and we’re excited to see how students respond to having it available.”

At the end of the week, students felt more empowered to take control of all aspects of their own wellness.

“In a super busy world that demands your attention every second, it’s important to take care of yourself,” said Kloe, a NHS junior, “because no one else can do it for you.”

Community and Generosity At the Harborfields Central School District’s April Board of Education meeting, both community members and students were honored for their accomplishments.

Thanks to the amazingly successful benefit gala that the Harborfields Community Educational Foundation (HACEF) hosted earlier in 2019 and the amazing generosity of TAKING CONTROL OF WELLNESS - 1Life students Maya, Larkyn and Kloe the HACEF board, $55,000 enjoyed the school’s new mindfulness room after its grand opening during Wellness has been donated to the Week. Additionally, students Bryan Hyun, who was selected to be an EarthEcho Water Challenge Ambassador, and Cameron Best, a senior robotics student who was nominated for the First Dean’s List award, were recognized by the board for their outstanding accomplishments.
