Warrior Ranch Foundation Helps Veterans and First Responders Suffering from PTSD through Equine Therapy.

This program rehabilitates retired race horses for adoption, preventing euthanasia. As participants engage in these activities, they develop bonds, give guidance, demonstrate leadership, and help horses overcome fears. In doing so, participants experience companionship and lower stress levels while participating in activities that are proven to reduce symptoms of PTSD. The Warrior Ranch Foundation rehabilitates troubled horses, making them fit to return home or fit for adoption. In doing so, veterans are able to assist in re-purposing these horses while also helping themselves. The Warrior Ranch Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) corporation.

Long Island Senate Majority delegation announced the ‘MTA RAIL Act’ at the Hicksville LIRR station. The MTA RAIL Act will overhaul the MTA, its operations, and introduce much needed reforms to the way the MTA operates. They announced a five-point platform that includes an independent, forensic audit of the MTA, giving riders a voting voice on the MTA Board.

The five-point platform includes: an independent, comprehensive forensic audit of the MTA’s procurements, improvement to long-term capital planning, providing riders a voting voice on the MTA board, overhauling the way the MTA analyzes itself, and ensuring MTA revenues are more likely to go to New York businesses.

It will also modernize the MTA and work to bring reform, transparency, and improved service to the millions of MTA riders.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Products used to wash boat hull sand decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia.

Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen. For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to surface waters.

Below are a few actions you can take: 1) When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and properly disposed.

2) Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use.

3) Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products.

Here are a list of a few alternatives to toxic products: Elbow Grease, Hydogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baby Oil.

Elwood-John H. Glenn’s American Sign Language program has been steadily growing through the years — starting with one small class and now boasting more than 90 students across three high school levels and one college level.

Students enjoy having this language to explore, and are vocal about the importance and necessity of having people who can interpret for hearing impaired individuals.

“People are often inclined to gravitate toward taking Spanish

because that seems like a more practical route to take,” said Megan Hovanec, a level-two ASL student, “but that’s not necessarily the case. With the amount of deaf Americans in our country, ASL is something that everyone should have a basic knowledge of.”

Meagan plans to double major in interpreting and nursing in college so she can use ASL in the medical field.

The community of ASL students at John H. Glenn enjoy giving back to the deaf community each year

by volunteering at the Fall Festival at Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, participate in districtwide events like International Night, and put on some of their own events, such as ASL Idol.

“Sometimes all it takes is someone setting an example of something they’re passionate about,” said level-four ASL student Victoria Didiego. “I used to practice signing with my cousin because she studied it in college, and now I want to pursue full time interpreting.”

What You Will Need 10 ripe tomatoes, chopped 3 English cucumbers, diced 1 large red onion, diced 1 yellow pepper, seeded and chopped 3 red peppers, seeded and chopped 4 tbs red wine vinegar 2 tbs of olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced ½ cup cilantro chopped 2 limes sliced 1 avocado diced

Salt and Pepper to taste Preparation 1.Place tomatoes, onion, bell peppers, Tabasco sauce and garlic in a food processor and process until smooth.

2. Place all of the cucumbers except ½ cup cucumbers into the blender and process until smooth.

3. Add vinegar and oil and quick process until mixed.

4. Place the mixture in a serving bowl, and stir thoroughly.

5. Cover and refrigerate for an hour or until serving time.

6. Remove from refrigerator and uncover.

7. Add salt and pepper to taste.

8. Place gazpacho into serving dishes.

9. Garnish with remaining cucumbers and cilantro and a piece of lime and 1 t. of avocado. Enjoy!

You may think you know where you will be one year from today. Think again. I know what you are thinking.

“That’s an interesting thought, but a year from now my life will most likely be pretty much the same.” That could be, but let me ask you this... Think about the year you met your spouse, the year you unexpectedly changed career paths or fate might have brought you to a new city (maybe fate brought you to Long Island, NY from someplace else), the

year you found out you were going to be a parent for the first time. I could list a hundred more examples. Who knew as the clock struck 12 midnight on New Year’s Day of that year, that those life changing events would be coming your way.

Life holds so many mysteries for us to unfold; sometimes pleasant and sometimes not so pleasant. What I have come to know is that no matter what you are going through, there are always goodies waiting around a new corner. I can honestly say, I have never gone through a personal trial without something magical coming out of it; a special person, a new opportunity, an important revelation. I have also come to know that life looks most messy before things fall into place. At that point, all you can say is, “Wow!,” and “Thank you.”

We go through cycles of rest, growth and then reaping rewards.

We know we are in a cycle of rest when life seems status quo, the needle doesn’t move very much and we are just going about our business with no significant

ripples. Life seems fairly effortless and predictable in this cycle. It may even seem a bit boring at times, and you long for a little spice.

We know we are in a growth cycle when hard times come, life feels chaotic and overwhelming, we “just can’t seem to catch a break,” and we experience heavy and painful emotions. It is in our growth cycles where we do the most significant work and our soul achieves further expansion.

This expansion prepares us for our next reward cycle. When we pass the tests we are given during our growth cycles, we will then (often, when we least expect it) come into a new reward cycle.

A reward cycle is recognizable to us because this is when we experience the goodies of life.

Someone special comes into our path, doors seem to open up, a dream comes true, and life starts to feel great again.

Suddenly, perspective is achieved. Any discomfort seems worth it, because it delivered us to a place of being able to receive the gift(s) we are now being given.

Sixth-grade students from Northport and East Northport Middle Schools visited Touro Law Center on March 22 to present their semester-long endeavors entitled “Project Citizen.” These 28 students are a part of the district’s Investigate program, a challenging enrichment program that emphasizes higher level thinking skills, problem solving activities, and cooperative learning techniques.

“Project Citizen” is in its second year as a part of the Investigate program.

Students presented their projects to a panel of civic experts, including Northport Social Studies chairperson, Sean Hurley; Suffolk County legislative aide, Liz Alexander;

Director of Development at SCCC, Christopher Williams; and Touro Law students Kassandra Polanco and Sydnie Molina.

For this project, students first identified an issue of public policy in their community which concerned them. Each group of students then researched their chosen problem, interviewing community members who assisted them in learning more about the issue. Additionally, students worked to identify potential solutions by way of letter writing, emails, and phone calls.

Examples of issues researched include the rise in rear end collisions as a result of red-light cameras,

the environmental impacts of plastic straw use, the need for school crossing guards to work longer hours, the need for clean water fountains and issues of flooding in Northport village.

In addition to help from program facilitators Brianne Furstein and Fran Bertos, Northport High School law teacher David Scott also guided students in their research and organized their visit to Touro.

“This was a great event that brought civic learning to life. Students were able to see how they can work together to use their voice to make our world a better place,” said Mr. Scott.

Student Community Forum After returning from a life-changing service trip to West Virginia, the Students for 60,000 club held a forum at the Northport Public Library to share their experiences with the community.

Students shared how different parts of the trip affected them. Some students shared how moved they were to learn about the adverse impact the coal industry has had on the communities, while others covered their experiences in assisting low income families in various after school programs, working on low-income homes, and learning about various rehabilitation organizations and drug treatment programs with an emphasis on the opioid

epidemic.

Additionally, some students shared how rewarding it was to visit Tug Valley High School and make simply connections with other high school students.

“This trip was extraordinarily powerful not just because of the service we performed, but the knowledge we gained,” said senior Katie Sierra.

“And the most striking takeaway I got from the trip was how similar we truly are. We share the same core values, beliefs, and many the same struggles, whether related to poverty, drugs, or the environment.”

Students closed the forum by emphasizing their ongoing collaboration

and work towards a student exchange, where Northport High school would invite students from West Virginia to travel to New York to partner together in addressing the opioid epidemic among other issues confronting both our states.

Students for 60,000 began in 1987 as a school club dedicated to assisting the homeless. The name of the club came from the approximate number of 60,000 homeless in New York City in the 1980s.

Over the years, the club has turned into a program that organizes fundraisers, raising over hundreds of thousands of dollars, and raising awareness for those in need.

that holds regional, state, and nationwide robotics competitions in order to inspire students’ interest in science and technology and seeks to award students that exhibit the highest level of skill, dedication and leadership with the Dean’s List award.

Cameron was named a finalist of only three islandwide and will be traveling to Detroit to attend the FIRST World Championship.

Additionally, he will be recognized by the organization for his outstanding achievement.

“Cameron is an incredible robotics student who exhibits

strong leadership in our club, even though he’s only a sophomore,” said robotics teacher Michael Pinto. “He mentors many of the younger robotics teams in the Harborfields elementary and middle schools as well and is extremely dedicated to the field of technology.”

Cameron started working with robots when he was in fourth grade. While he is only halfway through high school, he hopes to pursue mechanical or aeronautical engineering in college.
