Gardening can be a rewarding and relaxing hobby, one that allows gardeners to escape from the daily grind and soak up some sun. As rewarding as gardening can be, it’s even more so when gardeners ply their trade in an eco-friendly way. Gardening with the environment in mind is something many gardeners might do already without even knowing it. The following are a few ways to garden in a way that’s mutually beneficial to gardeners and the environment. • Use mulch to conserve resources and reduce reliance on fertilizers. Conserving resources is one of the best ways to help the environment, and

Benefits Of Riding Mowers Homeowners love extensive, lush, green lawns. But the elbow grease that goes into tending to the landscape is far less beloved. One task that routinely causes bouts of procrastination is mowing the lawn. But riding mowers can change the way homeowners view mowing the lawn. Traditionally, mowing the lawn has been a task largely handled by
homeowners pushing walk-behind mowers. Whether these mowers were powered by gasoline, electricity or simply human power, they were the type of mower that was generally the most popular and most affordable. Individuals had different features they could consider in their mowers, including horsepower and the size of the deck. There were also mowers
that could bag or mulch. Despite these features, homeowners with a particularly large back or front yard -- or both -- may have found lawn mowing to be tedious work. Those who have yards of almost an acre or more often find riding mowers to be an efficient method of mowing the lawn, and one that also does not require as much effort out in the sun.
A riding mower’s cutting deck is in front, while a lawn or gardening tractor’s cutting deck is midmounted, which is how they differ. Lawn tractors also may be able to accept other landscaping attachments. A riding mower is more maneuverable than a tractor, particularly for landscapes that may have trees or planting beds. Cost is the one thing that may deter some
homeowners from a riding mower. While a walk-behind mower could cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars and up, riding mowers generally start at $1,000 and may be as much as $10,000, depending on the extra features, like cruise control and cup holders. However, some find that what riding mowers lack in affordability, they make up for in convenience. Plus
buying a riding mower may pay for itself in savings on landscaping services over the course of one to two seasons. As with any lawn tool, it’s important to note that riding mowers are not toys and they should not be handled by children, nor should children be allowed to ride along while mowing.

HEARING HELP IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION
fencing, a good windblock will help shelter other plants from blowing sand and salt. Just be sure to plan the windblock to stop most of the oncoming wind in a way that your water views are not compromised. • Amend the soil. Few things grow well in sandy soil on their own. Unless you’re thinking of solely planting cacti and other succulent plants that don’t require much water from the soil, it will be necessary to amend the soil to include nutrients and a more hospitable growing base. Sand is good for drainage, but it cannot retain enough moisture to be viable for most plants. Therefore a healthy mix of nutrient-rich soil, compost and fertilizer can provide the right start. • Consider sun and heat exposure. Select plants that are hardy in warm-weather, full-sun conditions. Droughttolerant plants are a good idea. Choose among varieties that have waxy
leaves to repel salt and sand and low-growing types that will have more protection from the sun. Should you want to plant other flowers and plants, you may have to consider creating shade with moderately-sized bushes or trees. Yucca plants thrive seaside, as does ornamental pampas grass. Brightly colored ice plants and cosmos flowers can add splashes of color. • Add costal accessories. Typically seaside gardens are enhanced with knicknacks and other items that are specific to coastal living. Pilings with rope, small anchors, sea shells, nautical accents, and much more can be used to fill in bare areas of the garden and create places for birds and other animals to explore. While there can be some challenges to seaside gardening, it is possible to plant a seaside garden if gardeners choose wisely among heat-, sand- and drought-tolerant plants.

Brisk winds and salt spray can enhance the experience of living by the seaside. But the same features of coastal living that attract residents can be unkind to many garden plants. Sun, salt, a light breeze and some sand may make for a picturesque day at the beach, but they can be anything but favorable to the delicate plants and flowers in a garden. Further, the very warm temperatures and arid, sandy soil that are typical of seaside locales can make planting a lush garden difficult. Despite the difficulties, coastal living and gardening is possible if you implement some tips for creating a more welcoming environment for plants. Here’s how to do just that. • Set up a windbreak. Whether it’s by using native grasses and durable plants that are typically found in coastal areas or an architectural structure, such as a stone wall or

Go Green With Your Garden Continued From 3 applying mulch is a great way to conserve water. Mulch helps the soil retain water, keeping the water from evaporating into the air, which means less watering for gardeners who want to keep their gardens looking lush and healthy. In addition to helping conserve water, mulch can also help reduce reliance on fertilizers. That’s because mulch provides nutrients to the soil as it breaks down, providing an eco-friendly alternative for gardeners who don’t want to rely on fertilizers to deliver nutrients to their soil. • Plant more flowers. Planting flowers is another eco-friendly way to garden. Native flowers, in particular, can help maintain an area’s natural ecosystem, providing food and
shelter for insects and other wildlife. More flowers and plants around the property also means there will be significantly less grass to mow, which reduces the amount of gas necessary to mow that grass in the warmer weather and the amount of greenhouse gases the lawn mower produces. In addition, less grass means less need for fertilizers and pesticides to maintain that grass. • Choose gardening tools and products with the environment in mind. Veteran gardeners have a host of tools that help tackle every problem imaginable. But many older tools or gardening products might not be made of recycled materials. When shopping for gardening tools, whether you’re a beginner who needs everything or a veteran
gardener whose tools have seen better days, choose products made from recycled materials. For example, many gardeners use mats to help reduce stress on their knees when kneeling down to garden. When buying a new mat, choose one made from recycled tires. But emphasizing recycled products shouldn’t stop at the tool shed. Mulch, for instance, can be made from recycled rubber and won’t impact the environment in a negative way. Just be sure to purchase recycled mulch that is nontoxic and does not consume natural resources. • Live and let live. Insects might be a nuisance, but they can also be a gardener’s best friend. Spraying insecticide simply

Turning Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love… That was the topic I chose to speak on at the recent C.W. Post Honors Program Conference. The good news? Every last student in attendance at the standing room only panel had something they were passionate about and, in an ideal world, wished to pursue as a career. The bad news? Most they seemed all too content to relegate these passions to a mere hobby, rather than even giving the dreams a fleeting chance to exist in their own, real world. Musicians majoring in Chemistry, Artists majoring in Finance… This is not to say that all fields don’t hold some sort of fulfilling promise – but
just choosing a major for the sake of picking something, anything… well, I can’t say I support that philosophy wholeheartedly. And as for the money factor; well that only goes so far in dictating happiness. Say what you will about being able to purchase all the comforts and extravagances you like, but if you spend the majority of your life just going through the motions of a 9-5 job, I think it’s safe to assume no amount of compensation will make up for it. I’m not sure I made much of an impression on these students, as many are already well on their way to graduation and seem fairly set to continue on their chosen path. Others were a bit more open-minded, willing to put themselves out there and
explore – at least in the short term – for even the slightest chance at success in something they truly enjoyed. And still others remained undecided, juggling several interests while in the process of making that all-important decision of which direction to head in. I suppose the most important point I tried to make, and the one I attempt to follow myself, is that, no matter what decisions you make along the way, there is always room to change course, start fresh, adapt on the go… nothing is set in stone unless you allow it to be. As we grow and mature, so do our dreams, and what once may have seemed impossible could very well become a genuine possibility down the road.

SERVING ALL OF LONG ISLAND AND NEW YORK CITY EVERY DAY!
Fresh flowers serve many purposes. A bouquet of flowers can be a gift on a special holiday or birthday. Some people apologize with flowers, while others use flowers to convey feelings of love or appreciation. Many people like to display fresh-cut flowers in their homes because their beauty can brighten the mood indoors. Others plant rows and rows of flowers in a garden with the express purpose of cutting them and bringing them into the home. While outdoor flowers can remain beautiful and bountiful outside, once they are cut, there is a limited amount of time before they begin to wilt and wither. But there are ways to prolong the life of cut flowers to enjoy their beauty as long as possible. • Cut correctly. Creating a large enough surface area on the stem for the uptake of water is essential. That is why florists recommend cutting the stem on a slant to expose more area to the water. • Place flowers in water immediately. Some people advocate cutting the stems while they’re actually submerged in water. However, you will probably be fine if you simply recut the stems on flowers you brought inside and immediately put them in a vase
of water. The key is not to let the tip of the stem dry out or close up with an air bubble, sap or other substances, preventing the uptake of water. Be sure to use lukewarm water so as not to shock the blooms. • Remove leaves. Take off the leaves of the plant that would end up underwater in the vase. Exposure to the water could cause the leaves to rot and fall off, creating algae or sludge in the vase water. It also may breed extra bacteria or attract small insects to the water. However, do not to remove the thorns from roses, as this tends to shorten their shelf life. • Choose young flowers. Mature flowers may have peaked and begun to make room for a new round of blooms, so try to choose young buds or blooms that just opened so that you’ll have an opportunity to enjoy them longer. • Create a viable water atmosphere. Once a fresh flower is cut and a stem is placed in water, bacteria and fungi can start to grow almost immediately. These microscopic organisms can clog the small tubes inside the stem that suck up water for nourishment. Many florists send home a packet of water additive to alleviate
some problems in the indoor environment. The packet will contain a biocide that kills bacteria and fungi. There will be an acidifier as well as sugar. The acidifier makes the water more acidic to allow better absorption of water up the stem. The sugar is a food source for the flowers. Homeowners who cut flowers from their gardens can purchase these additives or create their own variations from items around the house. It has been said a penny in the water will kill the microorganisms because copper is a fungicide. An aspirin can make the water more acidic. You can also try small amounts of bleach, lemon-lime soda or even antiseptic mouthwash. • Keep flowers away from ... Don’t place cut flowers next to fruit, which gives off gases as it ripens, causing flowers to age faster. Also, keep the flowers away from direct sunlight and try to keep them in a cool place. • Change the water. Keep on top of water maintenance by changing it at least every 2 to 3 days to maintain good water health. Be sure to replace the additives each time you change the water. By following a few strategies you can keep fresh-cut flowers lasting longer for enjoyment.

Making Memories On The Job
As the school year comes to a close, many of Long Island’s high school students are looking forward to a funfilled summer. For some, however, now begins the monotonous task of finding a summer job. Even though the school year is over, teens often find themselves hunting for employment for several reasons. For some, extra income is a driving factor. For others, they just want to make their parents proud. Five summers ago, when I applied for my first job, it was out of sheer boredom! I really didn’t need the money. Making my parents proud was a

nice bonus. Several years later, I still work there. In fact, now my brother works there too. As I am heading off to college, I’m not interested in working many hours. I would much rather spend time with family than pick up a shift. There will be plenty of time to work, but only a few months to spend living at home. Sometimes, work is overwhelming; it is rarely fun. Nonetheless, it is a responsibility that I have undertaken. Working teaches invaluable life lessons that will prepare me for what is to come. In addition, my job has
afforded me the ability to socialize in a new environment. I have made new friends, and the bond between my brother and I has been strengthened. Without a doubt, working has been the most beneficial aspect of my young life. I have never felt more accepted within a group in my entire life. Even though some of my coworkers are old enough to be my parents, we act like a normal bunch of high school friends. As we close out this school year, I am looking forward to a memorable summer. Hopefully, you are too!

The Silver Chords Chorus will debut the original composition, Swift Things Are Beautiful, at their spring concerts Sunday, May 4th at Islip High School and Sunday, May 18th at Kings Park High School. Based on the poem by Elizabeth Coatsworth, the piece was written by Christian Oliver, a sophomore at LIU Post, who won the The Chords’ student competition for an original work to be written for the SATB chorus. The call for entries was sent to colleges and universities in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Christian Oliver first came across Swift Things Are Beautiful in eleventh grade. “I found the poem so moving. How it describes all that is wonderful in nature and how we should truly stop and take a moment to see its glory. Nature and how choirs can bring natural elements into the choral setting really inspired me.” He said that the piece practically wrote itself. “The poem had such movement in the text that it made my job in finding the melody extremely easy. The hardest part was making sure all the voices convey the meaning behind the poetry.” The piece is part of a concert program entitled As Time Goes By… The chorus will perform standards such as You Made Me Love You and S’Wonderful as well as Amazing Grace, American Heroes and highlights from My Fair Lady. Concerts begin at 2 p.m. and are handicap accessible. “We’re delighted to be performing an original piece of music by such a talented young composer,” said Spyro Kalas, the chorus’s director. “As this competition gains momentum, we hope to have the privilege of showcasing the talents of many students studying on Long Island.”

escorted by John Rebecchi, senior vice president. The students were very interested in learning the “ins and outs” of the industry because it aligns with what they are learning in the classroom. At ICC, students use computers for desktop publishing, create graphic design projects, and also learn to retouch photos. They also learn how to create business cards, CD and DVD covers, brochures, animals, logos, package designs, T-shirt designs, and do digital video editing and poster design. The objective of the Special Career Education Program is for the students to show professional-level work and for them to exhibit skills that will enable them to obtain and hold a job.
Having the opportunity to do a comprehensive tour to see how a package design job is processed through a plant, from concept to printing, cutting, folding, and shipping to a client, was a priceless experience. The students were able to walk throughout the facility and see the equipment in full operation, including Disc’s new cuttingedge, four-million-dollar digital printing press. ESBOCES Teacher Core Weule-Sparwasser said, “Mr. Rebecchi was very descriptive about each aspect of the process. He introduced the ESBOCES students to Disc employees who further explained about each particular department and the jobs available. Everyone was very informative and answered all the students’ questions.” Upon leaving, the students were presented with a bag containing several promotional pieces printed by Disc, a calendar, pen, sewing kit, and additional information about the package design industry.

“And they’re off!” Racing six small wooden vehicles on the speciallyfitted track in each heat, 91 hand-crafted Pinewood Derby cars were in the competitions at the Annual Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America)’s district-wide runoff event held in the gym of the John Glenn High School in Elwood on March 29th. The cars had to be made by the boys (and parents could assist) in shaping and decorating the 5-ounce block of wood contained in the Pinewood Derby Car Kit. The 7- to 10-year-olds who were taking part in the District-wide event had previously raced their cars in the individual Cub Scout Pack’s race. The top four winners from each of the Cub Scout Packs in the Matinecock District (which encompasses Western Smithtown and all of the Town of Huntington) were eligible to take part in this event. With friends, parents, and volunteer scouting adults from the Pack and the Scout District to cheer them on, matrix style races were held for the 91 Tigers, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts and their cars. The top ten winners received trophies, and each participant received
a commemorative patch. The scouts and their families, representing 26 of the 33 Matinecock Cub Packs, had a fun day at this Matinecock District 2014 Pinewood Derby. Electronically scored, the pinewood derby cars raced from a variety of speeds of 192.5 mph to 216.2 mph and were timed at speeds of 17.7140 seconds to a top speed of 15.8440 seconds as they came to the finish line on the 40-foot long racing tracks. Top district winners (first to tenth place) were: • 1st place - Gregory M. of Pack, 329 (Commack) • 2nd place –Alex N. of Pack 457 (Dix Hills) • 3rd place - Cort G. of Pack 238 (East Northport) • 4th place - Gunnar K. of Pack 406 (Huntington) • 5th place - Jason D. of Pack 238 (East Northport) • 6th place – Dylan S. of Pack 328 (Smithtown) • 7th place - Colton K. of Pack 406 (Huntington) • 8th place - Bradley R. of Pack 406 (Huntington) • 9th place - Dominic C.-V. of Pack 178 (Huntington) • 10th place – Christopher T. of Pack 403 (E.

Northport) Rob Zeblisky, Matinecock District Pinewood Derby Race Chair said, “The Tigers, Cubs, and Webelos Scouts who participated in the Pinewood Derby race are truly winners, whether in their individual Cub Scout Pack or here at the District-wide race. They have had the fun of creating their own racecar and seeing it run, with their parents and fellow scouts cheering each and every one of them on to winning. Special thanks go to all the volunteers who assisted me in this event: Boy Scout Troop 8, East Northport’s Boy Scouts Peter B, John S, Mark S, Jack P and Anthony G. Thanks go to Cub Scout Pack 312 (East Northport) who supplied the track, Cubmaster Mike Scheibe (Cub Scout Pack 312), Angelo Fiorino (Boy Scout Troop 8) and Matinecock District’s Program Assistant Elaine Gray, Matinecock District Executive Bobby Rabbitt and scouting parents Roseann Zeblisky & Mike Wine. It was a great time for everyone who took part in every aspect of this great Cub Scouting event.”

Congratulations to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School freshman Anju Okamura on receiving a Merit Award in Stony Brook University’s 9th Annual Japan Center Essay Competition, sponsored by Canon U.S.A. The contest was established with the goal of promoting “awareness and understanding of Japan in the United States and helping young Americans
broaden their international horizons.” Entrants were asked to write on an aspect of Japan and its relation to the student’s personal views and experiences. Anju chose to write about her father, who is a master sushi chef. In her essay, she detailed his lengthy training in Japan, where he spent seven years preparing for his career. Anju noted that she likes to assist her father,
who currently serves as a chef at Takumi Japanese Restaurant in Commack. Anju was chosen for the Merit Award among 3,000 high school entries from the New York metro area. “It is amazing to receive this award,” she said. She will be honored at an awards ceremony on April 6th at Stony Brook University.
