The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

Although RTLI’s teams work year round, April is a particularly important month because it is National Rebuilding Month. “Too many Americans su er from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and under served communities,” said Caroline Blakely, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together. “National Rebuilding Month serves as an annual month-long call to service to encourage people to support their neighbors, strengthen their community and ensure everyone is living in safe and healthy homes.”

RTLI together with its 120 sister a liates will all look to surpass last year’s accomplishment of working with over 13,000 volunteers to repair close to 800 homes and over 150 community centers nationwide. As you drive around Long Island, watch for RTLI’s lawn signs. If you see one, you will know their volunteers are hard at work helping someone who needs a helping hand.

Once accepted into the program, each home receives a safety check of every room. Each home has its own challenges. RTLI also listens to the homeowner to determine their priorities. Hazards and unsafe conditions are noted and given to the volunteer crews so they can prepare a materials list and then

get to work. Minor plumbing and electrical repairs may be made, but they may also do weatherization, flooring (if the current floor is a hazard), sheet rock repair and a myriad of other repairs. If someone has limited mobility, a wheelchair ramp may be constructed, grab bars and railings installed, doorways widened where possible to accommodate a wheelchair. Conversions of bathtubs to walk-in showers can also be done and under certain circumstances, a stair glide may be installed. While RTLI cannot always take care of every issue in the home, they will tell you that every home they work on is left safer than is was and the lives of its residents are improved when the project is complete! So how can you help?

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

Although not open to the general public yet as it undergoes restoration, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) paid a special visit to the John and Alice Coltrane Home in Dix Hills where he was treated to a tour by Executive Director Marcella Goheen. Legislator Donnelly has supported the John and Alice Coltrane Home throughout his time in office with a county grant to assist in the preservation of the residence which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

John and Alice Coltrane moved into the landmark home at 247 Candlewood Path, Dix Hills in the early 1960s when they both were already successful composers and musicians and raised their four

children there. Called “The Spiritual Home of Jazz,” it is the iconic site where John Coltrane composed his 1964 masterpiece “A Love Supreme” –considered one of the most famous and important jazz compositions of all time. Alice Coltrane and the children stayed there after John’s early passing in 1967 until they moved West in the early 1970s.

According to Ms. Goheen, the mission and goal of the restoration is to “educate, elevate and inspire multi-generational audiences through the John and Alice Coltrane legacy and educational and virtual programming.” It is expected to become a destination for jazz lovers and music aficionados far and wide. They hope to be ready to open it the public

In April, our Library joins other libraries across Long Island to celebrate the Long Island Reads 2023 selection: A Speck in the Sea: A Story of Survival and Rescue by John Aldridge and Anthony Sosinski. Two veteran sailors who co-own and operate a Montauk lobster boat recount the 2013 search-and-rescue mission for co-author John Aldridge, describing how his partner, their families, the local fishing community, and the U.S. Coast Guard in three states mobilized an unprecedented and ultimately successful operation.

Olivia Rochlin Recognized For HELPing

During the Feb. 15 meeting, the Harborfields Central School District Board of Education honored Oldfield Middle School student Olivia Rochlin for collecting 400 pounds of uniforms, cleats, socks, shin guards and other athletic equipment for HELP International Uganda. After collecting the items, Olivia then organized the collection with an inventory list and placed the items in

suitcases weighing just under 50 pounds for transport.

HELP International’s goal is to fight poverty and empower individuals by connecting individual donors, like Rochlin, to urgent issues facing global communities. By answering HELP International Uganda’s request for sports uniforms, she helped to improve the quality of life in one of the most vulnerable populations

Dawn McGrath Named Assistant Vice President Of Operations At Educational Bus Transportation

Dawn McGrath, a resident of Lindenhurst, NY, has been promoted to Assistant Vice President of Operations at Educational Bus Transportation, which provides student transportation services to a number of school districts in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The announcement was made by Educational Bus Transportation CEO John Corr.

“For 35 years, Dawn has been part of the Educational Bus family, beginning as a school bus driver before moving on to dispatcher and eventually Operations Manager,” observed Corr. “Every step of the way, she has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to excellence and safety. She is a consummate professional who possesses the skills and ability that are essential to excellence in student transportation.

Everyone at Educational Bus Transportation joins me in congratulating Dawn as she begins her next chapter as Assistant Vice President of Operations.”

BOE Honors County Champion Wrestling Team

At the Elwood School District Board of Education’s Feb. 9 meeting, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s county champion wrestling team were honored for winning the Suffolk County Division II Dual Meet Championship.

“It is a rare occasion when we invite an entire team to a board of education meeting to be recognized, but the board and I felt we’d be remiss if we did not bring forward the John Glenn High School wrestling team,” Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert said.

“The team showed heart, character and perseverance throughout the Dual Meet Championship,” Athletic Director Dave Shanahan said.

“Championships are not just won; they are earned with outstanding coaching. Another piece of the championship puzzle is to have exceptional parents who value athletics, an important foundation in the lives of our student athletes. The wrestling parents cheered loud and proud throughout the day, providing energy and strong resolve, and for that, we

thank you. Congratulations to the 2022-2023 wrestling team. You have made the school proud, your parents proud and the community proud. We certainly showed Suffolk County that Elwood what Elwood pride is all about.”

Dr. Bossert noted that a county championship banner had been ordered, and he and the Board presented the team with a certificate to hang in the wrestling room until the banner arrives.

According to Corr, McGrath will report directly to Patti Royce-Moser, Vice President of Operations, helping to provide support, leadership, and direction to Educational Bus Transportation’s operating locations throughout Long Island. She will also help control the daily operation of all transportation contracts, in compliance with the policies of the contracting agencies and in conformance with company policies and procedures.

Last year, McGrath received The Golden Merit Award from the National School Transportation Association (NSTA) at its annual meeting and convention. Among the highest honors in the school transportation industry, The Golden Merit Award recognizes school transportation professionals for their outstanding achievements in service and safety.
