During the trip, students visited the onsite museum as well as met with an outpatient who discussed their experience with mental illness.

HEARING HELP IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I want to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to all those readers who took the time to reach out in the last week to express condolences on the passing of my “Pal,” to relate to the sense of loss, to the closeness felt… but, mostly, to comment on how fortunate I was to share such a special bond with my grandfather and develop so many wonderful memories through the years.

It is with that sentiment that I choose to pick up this week’s column. Rather than dwell in the sadness, I choose to reflect with a smile – on the love, the laughter, the photo albums, the video footage, the small possessions that embody much larger stories –

all the components that make pile of “unattributed” wisdom up a life well-lived. we all love to call upon from time to time. No matter the Family is precious. We source, the message is clear. know this, of course; but And so, we smile. We reflect.

I think we tend to forget just how meaningful those We shed a happy tear here and connections are from time to there. But, most importantly, time. Only when called upon we remember. We remember to reflect are we reminded those times of our lives fondness, knowing how lucky we are to have such with a close-knit network of people that, one day, these very supporting us. No matter days will become the stuff of how few and far between the recollection. The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) is excited to announce the launch of its Favorite Poem Project designed to encourage participants of all ages and from all walks of life to send in their favorite poem with a brief explanation of why it is significant, and to attend the celebratory reading event at the Birthplace. “On the day of the event, 25 participants will read the poems they submitted and explain why they find them significant. We will videotape the readings and incorporate them in future exhibits at our Interpretive Center to serve as unique archival ‘documents’ for students, visitors, historians, and literary scholars. The Huntington Town Board, at its March 8 meeting, approved a major update of the Town’s Marine Conservation Law, incorporating revisions suggested by several Town departments, the Town’s Conservation Board and the Harbor and Boating Advisory Council.

The changes cover a wide variety of areas, including updating and streamlining the approval process for dredging and deposition of material and the construction or reconstruction of marine structures. The changes also establish engineering standards for marine structures and establish a separate permit for emergency maintenance

or storm damage.

The changes also clarify that a permit is not needed for routine maintenance of a marine structure and exempts municipalities and special improvement districts from having to get permits for marine structures, provided the construction or use is for a governmental, municipal or district purpose.

In other action, the Town Board: • approved an amendment to Town code allowing the granting of parking variances to allow restaurants or service businesses in large office and industrial buildings.

District Appointee

During its March business meeting, the Harborfields Central School District Board of Education appointed Harborfields High School Principal Dr. Rory Manning to the position of Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources, effective August 1st, 2016. Dr. Manning will be replacing Dr. Francesco Ianni who will be filling the position of Superintendent of Schools, effective January 1st, 2017.

Familiar to the district, Dr. Manning brings to his new role a wealth of knowledge and experience in education and administration. He

began his career as a high school science teacher at Hillcrest High School and then became a teacher and science department chairperson at Division Avenue High School. In 2006, he assumed the role of assistant principal at Sachem High School East, eventually transitioning to the role of principal.

In 2012, Dr. Manning was employed as the principal of Harborfields High School. In his four years as principal, he helped to introduce a number of notable initiatives, including rigorous AP courses, a restructuring of the guidance program and Google Apps for education platforms, among others. Under his leadership, the high school has received numerous state and national recognitions, recently earning a nomination by the New York State Education Department to the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award Program.

Additionally, he was named

Western Suffolk BOCES 2015 Model Schools Administrator of the Year.

Dr. Manning earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Stony Brook University, followed by his Master of Science in human nutrition from the University of New Haven.

He received his graduate certification in school district administration from Stony Brook University and obtained his Doctorate in educational administration and supervision from St. John’s University, where he currently serves as an adjunct professor.

“I am excited to join the leadership team of the Harborfields Central School District,” said Dr. Manning. “I am looking forward to continuing the work of our faculty, staff, students and parents in maintaining our strong tradition of excellence.”

Way with Words A team of fourth-grade students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently competed in the annual WordMasters Challenge, a national vocabulary competition for students in grades 3-8 that encourages growth in vocabulary and verbal reasoning.

Competing in the

difficult Blue Vision, student Allison Blosser was one of 46 fourth-graders from across the nation to receive a perfect score of 20 on the challenge. Coached by teacher Christine Mayr, TJL fourth-graders Andres Arias, Maeve Baron, Chase Brandt, Alex Braunstein, Clarissa Bues, Brooke Cheskes, Liana Flowers, Lucy MacInnes, Charles

Picarillo and Samuel Sosnick also achieved outstanding results in the meet.

With their combined efforts, the team of TJL fourth-graders scored an impressive 182 out of a possible 200 points in the second of three meets this year, placing them seventh in the nation among 328 teams.

Mathematically Motivated Earlier this month, 10 seventh- and eighth-grade students at Elwood Middle School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in the 2016 Suffolk County MoMathlon at Brookhaven National Labs.

Presented by the National Museum of Mathematics, the MoMathalon provides

students with the opportunity to compete against other schools in an engaging and challenging series of mathematical questions. They compete individually and in groups with peers from different schools, as well as their own, to answer questions and identify alternate solutions to math

equations.

Crash Course in History

Northport Middle Schoolers got a crash course in history from American free speech activist guest Mary Beth Tinker, who spoke with the students during an assembly on March 8th.

More than a half-century ago, in 1965, 13 year-old Tinker was part of a small group of students in Des Moines, Iowa who made history by wearing black armbands to school to mourn the dead in the Vietnam War and call for a Christmas truce.

After being suspended for their actions, the students eventually won a breakthrough U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, with the Court declaring in 1969 that neither teachers nor students “shed their Constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.”

This case set a precedent for student speech in schools and Tinker’s timely

visit coincided with a vacant seat remaining on the current U.S. Supreme Court bench.

Students gained powerful insight into the importance of the Judicial Branch of the United States Government. Tinker spoke about her journey through the trial, shared stories of the movements of other young people and listened to students on how their young voices are making a difference.

Basketball Clinic, serves as league representative for the SCWBCA and volunteers with his team to wrap presents with the Salvation Army during Christmas time.

Additionally, he founded the Elwood Summer Sports Program, which services up to 1,000 children each summer.

Among friends, family and other honorees, Mr. Athanas was inducted into the Hall of Fame during a special ceremony held at the Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls on March 13th.

“It was an incredibly humbling honor to be included among the current and past inductees,” said Athanas. “I accepted [the recongition] in the name of all the great Elwood-John Glenn kids I’ve coached over the last 30 years. Without them, none of this would have been possible.”

During the trip, students visited the onsite museum as well as met with an outpatient who discussed their experience with mental illness.

with animals in the assisted therapy program and observed the cultural arts center where patients engage in project-based art.

The Elwood Union Free School District is pleased to announce that ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School girls’ varsity basketball coach Andrew Athanas was recently inducted into the Basketball Coaches Association of New York’s Class of 2016 Basketball Hall of Fame.

Following his nomination by Hall of Fame members Warren Fuller and Rich Castellano and resume submission, Mr. Athanas’ exceptional work experience, numerous coaching awards, volunteer service and track record for successful coaching seasons qualified him as an honoree.

With 40 years of coaching experience, Mr. Athanas dedicated 30 years as the head coach of the varsity girls’ basketball team at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School, Section XI Athletics.

Under his advisement, the Elwood Lady Knights team received a state title, federal title, three Long Island titles, four county titles and 12 league titles.

As the girls’ basketball head coach at Elwood, he holds a record of 352 wins.

Leaving for retirement, the 2015-2016 athletic season was his final year coaching at Elwood.

Among his many years of success, Mr. Athanas received the Suffolk County Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (SCWBCA) Service Award, 13 League Coach of the Year awards, five BCANY Coach of the Year awards, Newsday All-Long Island Coach of the Year, among others.

A member of The Trans Group, LLC (Spring Valley, NY), Educational Bus Transportation was recently awarded a grant through the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Clean Diesel Rebate Program to help replace older school buses. Novelist Visits As a way to help inspire students to explore their artistic and creative writing skills, sixth-, seventhand eighthgraders at Elwood Middle School participated in an assembly led by graphic novelist and creator of the Olympians book series, George O’Connor.

During the visit, O’Connor explained that his passion for Greek mythology led him to

write his Olympians book series. He shared original sketches and illustrations while providing a short synopsis of each of his eight published books. Each volume of the Olympians tells the story of one of the gods in the Olympic pantheon, accompanied by the history behind each myth. O’Connor conducted extensive research to write and illustrate his books.

O’Connor encouraged

the students to keep practicing their drawing skills and gave advice on how they can develop their craft. To conclude the presentation, he drew a quick sketch of two Greek god characters that appear in his books and afforded students the opportunity to ask questions. After the assembly, O’Connor held a book signing in the school’s library.

Talking with Teddy Bears The Washington Drive Primary School PTA Health and Welfare Committee in the Harborfields Central School District hosted a Teddy Bear Clinic to help educate kindergartners on health and safety.

Bringing along with them their favorite stuffed animals, students rotated to four stations where they participated in interactive, hands-on lessons led by

PTA members.

At the nutrition station, students learned about eating colorful fruits and vegetables and different ways to exercise. During their stop at the first aid station, they put a bandage on their stuffed animal’s injury as well as discussed outdoor safety. While at the hygiene station, kindergartners practiced brushing their stuffed

animal’s teeth, learned about using hand sanitizer and washing their hands to remove germs. Lastly, the poison control station educated the children about cleaning products that contain dangerous chemicals and when in an emergency to call 911.

After the clinic, each student received a certificate of completion.

Student-Artists Inducted Thirty-five talented students-artists from Harborfields High School were inducted into the National Art Honor Society in March, acknowledging their outstanding ability and interest in the arts.

To begin the ceremony, Principal Dr. Rory Manning and Dr. Francesco Ianni, assistant superintendent for administration and human resources, expressed words of welcome to parents and family members. They each commended the students

for their hard work as well as acknowledged the unique opportunity the students have to connect with people through art.

“With your art work, passion and dedication, you can make people feel better and make someone’s day better,” said Dr. Ianni.

“I am so proud of you and so honored to be here.

Congratulations and keep up the good work.”

NAHS co-presidents Jack Ratti and Kelly Stone read aloud the name of each new inductee as they received

their certificate and light the ceremonial candle.

While welcoming new inductees, the society bid farewell to 28 graduating seniors who received the tassels they will wear on the day of graduation.

In harmony, the group repeated the NAHS oath led by Stone.

The evening concluded with individual speeches from Stone and Ratti who shared what being in the society has meant to them.

Cultivating Culture It was a weeklong celebration of language, culture and traditions as students at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District observed LOTE (Languages Other Than English) Foreign Language Week.

Each day of the week offered a new theme to celebrate.

Coordinated by language teacher Therese Kennedy, students participated in various

activities and presentations that honored the countries Spain, Italy, France and the United States. Additionally, a day was dedicated to recognizing the students’ heritage.

On Italian Day, students received a visit from performers and teacher Marylou Romano of Coro D’Italia, a nonprofit community-based organization dedicated to preserving the Italian

American culture through dance and songs. Dressed in traditional Italian clothing, students were educated on the culture and history of Italy. They also tried their hand at playing the drums and learned about Italian dance.

During the school’s Spanish Day fiesta, Latin dance professional Maria Loreta Celitan led a lesson on the Salsa and Merengue dance styles.

A number of Harborfields High School student-artists were selected to have their artwork displayed in the Huntington Arts Council’s Journey Program High Arts Showcase XII exhibit.

The art pieces shown in the exhibit reflect a variety of media and an exceptional level of talent from high school students in the program.

During the opening reception, Harborfields student Alexa Forberg was honored with an award of excellence for her photograph, while student Hannah Bartfield’s artwork was chosen for the cover of the Huntington Arts Council newspaper, which is distributed to more than 80,000 homes in the area.

Along with Forberg

and Bartfield, the artwork of Harborfields students Katherine Ellsworth, Elizabeth Larkin, Sabrina Qi and Wei Yu is on display at the Main Street Gallery in Huntington from March 4th-19th.

The district extends its congratulates to all the students for this artistic achievement.

Leadership Award The Elwood Union Free School District is pleased to announce that ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School senior Madison Graifman is among a select group of seven students to be named a Suffolk County High School Principals Association 2016 Principal’s Leadership Award winner and recipient of a $1,000 scholarship.

Along with a nomination from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Interim Principal Dr. James Ruck, Graifman submitted an application and personal essay for the scholarship program. For the essay, she was asked to describe how her leadership abilities have developed during her high school career.

In her essay, she wrote about how her experiences at B’nai B’rith Youth Organization Leadership Conferences and involvement in school

activities helped inspire her to be a leader. She wrote, “I have successfully built up my reputation as a leader by working hard, choosing my actions carefully and setting priorities. I will always take pride in showing my community and the world that I have the ability to make a difference and motivate others to do the same.”

As an active student in her school community, Graifman is the Spanish vice president for the World Language Honor Society, member of the Natural Helpers Club, vice president for the National Art Honor Society, member of the National Honor Society and treasurer of Habitat for Humanity.

She is also the All-School vice president for public relations, through which she became student liaison for the Elwood Taxpayer’s

For her athletic extracurricular activities, she is a member of the varsity volleyball team as well as the winter and spring track teams.

Dedicated to her studies, she is enrolled in five Advanced Placement classes. Ranked third in the Elwood graduating Class of 2016, Graifman is in the process of applying to a number of elite colleges and plans to major in chemistry on the premedical track to become a doctor.

“It is such a special honor,” said Graifman. “It makes me feel good that I am making a difference and contributing to my community.”

Graifman, along with the other award recipients, will be honored at the SCHSPA eighth annual Senior Leadership Luncheon on April 13th at Coindre Hall Castle in Huntington.

Medical Marvels The Elwood Union Free School District is pleased to congratulate Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students Kathryn Browne, Emily Goetz, Nicole Hugelmeyer, Emma Koster, Samantha Katz and Kathryn Zenobio for representing their school at the North Shore-LIJ Medical Marvels Competition.

Sponsored by The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the Center for Workforce Readiness, the Medical Marvels Competition is a research competition for students in ninth and

10th grade. According to the competition booklet, the Medical Marvels strives to raise awareness of the multidisciplinary nature of science, technology, engineering and mathematic careers for students at all levels of academic prowess and interest.

For the competition, students were given a hypothetical challenge on how to deal with and prevent chronic disease in a multicultural world, which they answered in the form of a 14-page written essay.

In the research paper, students were required

to state the goals and objectives of their proposed comprehensive wellness and health promotion plan as well as how implementation of the plan would be measured. They presented their proposal to a panel of doctors, health professionals and peers.

“The students worked extremely hard over the course of four months for the Medical Marvels Competition,” said adviser Arnold Kamhi. “All six students were professional and did a fantastic job. I am extremely proud of them.”

Tournament Fundraiser Tragedy struck the St. John the Baptist community when freshman Allie Ponzio fractured her neck during a J.V. basketball game this past January. Although Allie has been faced with a difficult recovery, her doctors are optimistic that she will be able to play basketball again in the future. In order to show support for Allie and her family, St. John’s hosted a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on March 13th

to help ease the financial burden that is facing the Ponzio family.

Teams from St. John’s, St. Anthony’s, Our Lady of Mercy, and other surrounding high schools competed for the right to be called tournament champion.

Women’s Athletic Director, Lorraine Bouklas, was ecstatic about the tournament results.

She stated, “The true spirit of “responding with mercy,” our school motto for this year, was quite

evident on Sunday, March 13th, as a community of people came together to support Allie Ponzio. $14,000 was raised by the efforts of our Girls Varsity and JV Basketball Coaches and their teams, along with the Boys Varsity Basketball Coaches and their team!

Our hope is for Allie to make a full recovery and be back on the court, where she belongs, very soon!!

We continue to keep her and her family in our thoughts and prayers.”

Shaved Heads Save Lives

The East Northport Middle School educational community came together for another successful St. Baldrick’s event on March 11th. The team, consisting of more then 60 students, parents and staff members, raised close to $24,000.

Since the team launched in 2009, they’ve collected more than $160,000 for the fight against cancer.

Team captain John Braun, a seventh-grade science teacher at ENMS,

was proclaimed Knight Commander as he marked his 11th year with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

Students were also acknowledged for years of dedication to fighting childhood cancer.

Recognized for three years of service as Squires of Hope: Max Bratchie, Joseph Canavan, Philip Greenwood, Connor Mulligan, Jake Pennino, Alyssa Voskinarian and Liam Wine. Honored for

seven years of participation as a Knight of the Bald Table: Thomas McDonagh.

This year’s top fundraiser for the district was ENMS eighth-grader Thomas Sandrib. The ENMS Bald Tigers would like to thank everyone who made the St. Baldrick’s event a huge success.
