Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta Holds Pet Food Drive

Save Now On Home Security

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is participating in Long Island Cares’ tenth annual Legislative Food Drive Challenge to collect pet food for the clients of Long Island Cares. Since 2009, Long Island Cares has provided free pet food and supplies to individuals and families in need, in an effort to enable them to keep their pets at home instead of placing them in shelters.

Legislator Trotta pointed

out that, according to Long Island Cares, dog and cat food are the most requested items by their member agencies. “Pets keep many people going, giving them comfort and a reason to survive in difficult times, especially now with COVID-19. I am asking the kind and generous residents and pet lovers in my district to help out. Last year we collected over 1,000 pounds of pet food,” said Legislator Trotta.

The pet pantry is in need of canned and dry cat/ dog food, cat/dog treats, birdseed, and food for fish, rabbits, and ferrets, as well as kitty litter and small new toys. The drive is from now until April 30.

Donations may be dropped off, Monday through Friday, from 9am - 4pm, at Legislator Trotta’s office, 59 Landing Avenue, Suite 1, Smithtown. For more information, please call his office at 631- 854-3900.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck.

Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true.

Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Dorothy Delia is an 87 year old resident of West Babylon. She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army in Ridegewood and Queens for over 20 years. Prior to COVID, she was very involved in her church by coordinating the prayer chain, greeting worshippers and helping at fundraisers and events.

Dorothy desperately needed dental work, but because she lives on a fixed income, she could not afford it on her own. She had been losing teeth and could only eat soft foods. She wished for dental work, which was granted! In February 2020, she got a new healthy smile!

Tips for Enjoying a Drive-In Movie Experience

(StatePoint) Social distancing guidelines across the country have made visiting a conventional movie theater difficult, if not impossible.

However, what was once a relic of the past has now become an innovation in entertainment, the drivein movie theater.

The drive-in movie theater is nearly as old as the automobile itself.

While today, there are about 300 drive-in theaters across the country, many more are popping up wherever there is space.

Indeed, Walmart recently announced more than 160 of its parking lots will be converted into drive-in movie theaters around the country and many small businesses are doing the same.

“A drive-in movie is the ideal event for anyone with a car because they can get out for a drive to enjoy a common experience with friends and family while taking appropriate social distancing precautions,” says Rah Mahtani, marketing communications manager

for MINI USA. To shed light on this rediscovered institution of cinema, MINI USA created a guide for drivers to help them make the most of the experience. Here are five of their top tips: 1. Arrive early. Many theaters allow guests to arrive up to an hour before the show begins.

Take advantage of this time to pick the best parking spot and stretch your legs. If the snack bar is open, grab a treat!

2. Bring the right car. A MINI Convertible is ideal for an open air viewing experience under the stars, while the MINI Countryman has room for the whole family.

3. Bring snacks. If your drive-in allows it, bring your favorite movie-viewing snacks like popcorn, soft pretzels, candy and soda.

4. Safely enjoy with friends. You can still safely go to the movies with your friends while staying socially distanced.

Meet at a nearby location to rally to the drive-in in separate cars. If you’re a MINI owner, check with

your local MINI owner’s club about a drive-in movie rally. You can even bring two-way radios or set up a group chat on your phone for live commentary of the movie.

5. Pack strategically.

Be sure to pack a blanket in case there’s an evening chill in the air.

A small pillow can also help support your back through the movie. Bring a small trash bag, too for all of your wrappers, empty cups and popcorn buckets. And lastly, if your car doesn’t already have one, bring a phone charger.

Back for the 2021 season, Movie Lot Drive-In, the popular drive-in movie experience which launched in 2020 to address the need for entertainment amid the Coronavirus pandemic, is back starting April 9, with a new season of blockbuster movies and safe entertainment options for Long Islanders. www.

MovieLotDriveIn.com Long Island event producer Starfish Junction announced today that the Movie Lot Drive-In series will return for the 2021 season, showing movies on their giant 52-foot screen, the largest on Long Island.

The 2021 season will be held at Westfield South Shore Mall located on Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore, NY, with the first weekend locked-in for April 9-10, 2021. The schedule will include movies perfect for date night, family fun night, girl’s night out, plus recently released movies, sing-alongs, classic films, and more.

To enhance the overall movie experience, special events surrounding movie weekend themes are being planned.

Movie Lot Drive-In, a pop-up drive-in movie experience, entertained nearly 7,000 cars and an estimated 25,000 people since it launched in May 2020 and “we’re happy to report that we will be back for the 2021 season starting in April and running through the fall months,” said Lauren Powers, Senior Director at Starfish Junction. “While movie theaters remain closed and restrictions on public gatherings are still enforced, we’re confident

that people will continue to search for fun and safe things to do. We’re working hard to create a great season with special events surrounding the movies being shown,” added Powers.

Over 82% of the responders to a survey of the 2020 Movie Lot DriveIn attendees rated their experience as very good or excellent, many returning week after week, and an overwhelming number stated that they enjoyed the experience citing safety as an important factor in deciding to attend.

The debut weekend, April 9-10, 2021, will have early and late show movies; including: FRI 4/9: The Croods: A New Age @ 7:45pm FRI 4/9: Scream @ 10:15pm SAT 4/10: Ghostbusters @ 7:45pm SAT 4/10: Impractical Jokers: The Movie @ 10:30pm Special Guests: Saturday, prior to the showing of Ghostbusters, ticketholders can meet and greet the Long Island Ghostbusters troupe and pose for pictures with the Ghostbusters car. Ticketholders are encouraged to arrive early for safety-compliant meet and greet prior to the show.

FREE POPCORN FOR EVERY CAR from STEW LEONARD’S Stew Leonard’s, the family-owned and operated fresh food store with Long Island locations in East Meadow and Farmingdale, is the official snack sponsor for the weekend.

Each car will receive one pre-packaged and safetysealed bag of popcorn upon arrival (while supplies last).

While movie theaters remain closed and

entertainment options remain limited, Starfish Junction has positioned itself as one of the leaders here on Long Island, owning the biggest popup drive-in screen, 52-feet, available locally.

There are a limited number of tickets available for each showing. Tickets ($40 per carload), are on sale now for opening weekend. All tickets must be purchased online in advance at the MOVIE LOT website to adhere to the promise of contactless processing.

Ticketholders are permitted to bring their own food and snacks to enjoy during the show.

Attendees may also consider curbside pick-up from Five Guys, Panera, or Olive Garden, all conveniently located on the grounds of the Mall, before filing into the lot for the movie.

Portable restrooms will be available for use. The Westfield Southshore Mall is located at 1701 Sunrise Highway, Bay Shore, NY. The showings will take place rain or shine, all ticket sales are final.

Many St. Patrick’s Day Traditions Are Not From Ireland St. Patrick’s Day is made special by various traditions.

Everything from dyeing major cities’ rivers green to parades to enjoying green foods has become part of the pageantry of St. Patrick’s Day. The next time you raise a green beer to your lips, you may wonder which traditions are authentically Irish and which ones were created by regions with an abundance of Irish emigrants.

Surprisingly, many seemingly Irish traditions likely began elsewhere.

First parade It would be accurate to assume that various elements associated with St. Patrick’s Day began where St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, once resided, including the first St. Patrick’s Day parade. However, some of the first

parades held in St. Patrick’s honor took place in two North American cities, New York and Boston, that had high numbers of Irish immigrants, but historians say the first ever St. Patrick’s Day parade was actually held in St. Augustine, Florida in 1601, a year after gunfire blasts were used to honor the saint. The parade may have been at the request of an Irish priest living there at the time.

Corned beef and cabbage What would St. Patrick’s Day be without an authentic meal of corned beef and cabbage? This dish is not so authentic after all, and actually is an American innovation. Ham and cabbage was widely eaten in Ireland, but corned beef was a cheaper alternative found in America by immigrants.

Therefore, corned beef became a staple of poor Irish immigrants living in lower Manhattan. The salted meat was boiled three times to remove some of the brine and make it palatable.

Green beer Green beer is not an Irish custom, but an American one. The most common beer consumed in Ireland is Guinness, which is dark brown to black in color, making green dye useless in Irish pubs since it would be largely invisible in the stout.

Golf tournaments One would not associate golf with St. Patrick’s Day unless they reside in Nome, Alaska. Golf is a popular Irish pastime, and each year the Bering Sea Ice Classic Golf Tournament takes place right around St. Patrick’s Day. Bright green golf balls are used, and breaks are

factored in between holes to warm up at local bars.

Wearing green According to The Christian Science Monitor, individuals in the United States started wearing green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the early 1700s.

They believed it “made one invisible to leprechauns.” The official color for the holiday used to be a sky blue known as “St. Patrick’s Day Blue,” established during the reign of King George III. In addition to these traditions, specialty items, such as coffees and shakes, also are very popular. However, most of these do not have origins on the Emerald Isle, either.

Yet, no matter where traditions began, there’s no denying St. Patrick’s Day has long inspired celebration.
