The official beginning of spring is a highly anticipated day among people who can’t wait to put away their winter coats and soak up some warm sunlight, but the day of the spring equinox is just as worthy of celebration for its uniqueness as it is for its symbolic connection with the end of winter.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, on the spring equinox, which is sometimes referred to as the “vernal equinox” or the “March equinox,” the sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north.

Equinoxes (there’s another one in September each year) are the only two times a year that the sun rises due east and sets due west for everyone on Earth. As the sun passes overhead on the equinox, the tilt of Earth is zero relative to the sun.

That means that the planet’s axis neither points toward or away from the sun.

Though it’s understandable why so many people appreciate the spring equinox, which ushers in increasing sunlight hours and later sunsets, the day’s uniqueness makes it even more worthy of celebration.

This year the spring equinox happens on 11:33 AM on Sunday, March 20 in the northern hemisphere.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) has distributed more than 1,500 free COVID-19 home test kits to community organizations, churches and libraries in the 17th Legislative District.

The kits, containing two tests per box, were procured from Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone’s Office through the County’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM). Delivering many of them personally, Legislator Donnelly has provided them to: the Deer Park Public Library, the Half Hollow Hills Public Library, the North Babylon Public Library, the South Huntington Public Library, Tri-Community and Youth Agency (Huntington), Ascension Lutheran Church (Deer Park), BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir

(Melville), the First Baptist Church (Deer Park), the Huntington Assembly of God, Deer Park Drug Prevention Coalition, the Parkdale Civic Association, the North Babylon Chamber of Commerce, the Deer Park Knights of Columbus Council #4428, and the Constantino Brumidi Lodge #2211 in Deer Park.

Individuals residing in the 17th Legislative District have also been offered free tests which are being picked up, by appointment, at the district office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station.

Delivery can be arranged for community members who are homebound. Residents of the 17th Legislative District who would like a kit and are unable to get to the community distribution sites can fill

out a form at https://www. scnylegislature.us/1390/ Free-COVID-19-HomeTest-Kits or call (631) 854-4433 to get their kits.

There is no charge but please note that, as supply is greatly limited, only one kit per household will be allowed and while supplies last.

“As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, I am happy to be able to provide our neighbors with these tests so that can use them, at their convenience, in the privacy of their homes, ensuring they stay safe, healthy and protect those around them,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank the organizations and community centers for getting them out there, and urge anyone who wants one to fill out the form or call my office.”

In support of their mission of giving back to veterans and first responders, nonprofit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service.

The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend.

“As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals.

They are more than just pets; these animals provide emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Dr. Marissa Altieri, DVM, volunteered her expert veterinary care to the pop-up clinic and its patients, donating her time to assist Paws of War as a way to give back to the community and support the non-profit’s mission.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May. Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 11th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares. org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have

generously donated to this annual drive.

All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets.

Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code

requirements, all pet food must be unopened and in original packaging. For more information or to make an appointment to donate outside of these hours, call (631) 854-4433.

“Now, more than ever it is important to remember that hard times impact all members of the family,” said Legislator Donnelly.

“Families shouldn’t have to decide between feeding themselves and feeding their beloved pets. I am happy to partner with Long Island cares again on this important and much needed cause.”

Pizza Tasting At John Glenn HS Elwood Director of Food and Nutrition Services Mara Pugh arranged for Schwan’s Company representatives Vicky Betanzos and Janine Schwalb to visit ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School on Feb. 18 to present Big Daddy’s Pizza tasting event.

A survey was offered as a QR code for the students to provide feedback. A total of 79% of students chose “Love It,” 15% voted

“Pretty Good,” while only 6% selected “Our Pizza Is Better.”

“From the looks of our results, we will be seeing a lot more of Big Daddy’s Pizza on our menus for the next school year,” Pugh said. “This was a brand that we had not tried before in the Elwood School District.

The kids loved it and it was something fun for them to participate in and feel as if their voice is being heard. When I came to the

district, my goal was to get the students involved and make sure the students who are our ‘customers’ are happy. Unfortunately, COVID had other plans, taking these opportunities away from us. I am happy to say that I will be having more companies come in and will invite all students and staff to share their opinions to help me make this program a success.”

Retiring Early According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents

indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many

working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs.

By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use.

PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists.

PACT is comprised of five communities and school districts

Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities.

The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.

(Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge) and collaborates with Farmingdale Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC). They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20.

Dear Governor Hochul and Members of the New York State Senate and Assembly,

investment; it’s clear that that tactic is no longer successful, and the state needs to put its money where its mouth is.

As businesses, we were gratified when New York State passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019.

The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.

Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more efficient, and increase resilience to climate change. A significant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.

In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table.

This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York.

Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Moreover, New York currently sends over $30 billion out of state every year to purchase fossil fuels.

This lack of progress is concerning for businesses: we want to be able to count on a consistent energy transition along with — or faster than — the timeline outlined in the CLCPA. We need to know that the laws of our state will be followed. New York has had three years to try to meet its own timelines without significantly increasing financial

Putting money back into the pockets of working New Yorkers: Included in this $15 billion investment are direct grants, vouchers, and cash payments to working New Yorkers, increasing their spending power and creating breathing room for families. These funds include: grants to homeowners to make their buildings more energy-efficient (for example, through weatherization or installing heat pumps), transit vouchers for NYC residents and other residents of urban areas to encourage the use of subway and bus ridership, and LIHEAP credits to lessen the cost of heat during cold winter months. These payments will ensure working New Yorkers will have more spending power and more breathing room, which is good for business and good for our state.

It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

The Matinecock District (BSA)’s Winter Olympics was held at West Hills County Park on Saturday Feb 19th, 2022. The daylong event, open to the public as well as to all in scouting, was hosted

by Cub Scout Pack 66 (South Huntington) with the support from Suffolk County Council (BSA or ScoutsBSA?).

It was a fun Saturday

filled with tons of Olympic style games that help encourage sportsmanship, teamwork, and physical fitness.

These games included Tug a War, Team Cross Country Skiing, Frozen Frisbee, Kickball, Relay Races, and an Amateur Radio station. There were over 100 people who came out to have fun from all over the Matinecock District

(the Town of Huntington and the western section of the Smithtown Township). Participants included Cub Scout Pack 5 (East Northport), Pack 471 (Elwood), Pack 5379 (Kings Park), Pack 406 (Huntington), Boy Scout Troop 125 (Commack), Troop 218 Girls (Melville), Troop 218 Boys (Melville), and Troop 34 (Huntington Station). Each of the

“stations” was hosted and run by the various youths of the Boy Scout Troops and by the Cub Scout Pack volunteer leaders.

The fun day was concluded by having a campfire at the Council Fire Theatre.

The scouts and their family members shared fun scouting stories, sang campfire songs, drank hot chocolate, and stayed

warm by the fire. Said Taliesin Powell, District Executive, “Even being caught in a light Snow Squall was never going to squash the scout spirit and the comradery that our scouts, leaders, and parents have! It even added to the fun and memories of the event for the scouts.

Scouting has never been more alive and getting kids out of the house to

enjoy the great outdoors at the Matinecock District’s Winter Olympics was a great time for all who attended.”

As St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday, devout Irish Catholics will treat the day as a religious celebration and may attend mass at nearby churches. Even though St. Patrick’s Day falls during the solemn season of Lent, since St. Patrick’s Day 2022 falls on a Thursday this year, one does not need to worry about any Lenten fasting restrictions.

However, abstaining from meat usually is put on pause when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Lenten Friday anyway.

The biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place in Dublin, and it’s full of national

pride. Additional smaller parades may be held across Ireland as well.

Travelers may experience “drowning the shamrock” as they visit Irish pubs on St. Patrick’s Day. It is traditional to drop a shamrock into customers’ drinks in the pub. As such, it is surmised that having many drinks undoubtedly means more good luck for the year ahead due to all those lucky shamrocks.

It’s common to come across religious rituals, pilgrimages and processions on St. Patrick’s Day, particularly to places associated with St. Patrick. Downpatrick in County Down is believed to be the final resting place of St. Patrick and many people visit the grave and cathedral there. Some also may want to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin.

Ireland celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in similar fashion as other countries, but the country offers unique takes on the festivities as well.

The All Kids Fair is pleased to announce that this year’s children’s expo will be taking place in person at a terrific new venue.

The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury.

Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been known for being a fun day for kids and their families to spend time together while also learning about opportunities for Long Island-based companies and organizations of interest to them.

In 2020, this was run as a virtual event, complete with exhibitors, many interactive classes, and even a virtual petting zoo, with kids “interacting” with the animals over a Zoom-like interface.

According to Barbara Kaplan, director of the expo, “every year, this fabulous children’s expo has many draws for Long Island families, and this year will be no different.” The All Kids Fair will have over 60 vendors plus many kidcentered activities, including “cornhole” (beanbag toss) and soccer.

Families can interact in person with exhibitors in a huge space, with vendors set further apart and with the activity areas in designated open areas rather than in breakout rooms.

Attendee Kitty Chung raved, “You organized a

wonderful event for families.

We will be glad to return to have more fun!”

Additional activities and attractions include three bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painters, balloon artists, a photo booth, and cotton candy, all included with admission.

A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers.

The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music.

The researchers behind the study examined the records of more

than 112,000 students in British Columbia.

Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

Huntington Tennis Association Announces Free Membership Long Island’s Huntington Tennis Association (HTA) h t t p : / / w w w. h t a t e n n i s . com/ has announced free membership for the 2022 spring/summer season.

Play is open to all levels, from beginner to advanced, throughout Long Island, NY. Offering an opportunity to get back into the swing after being inside all winter during the pandemic, HTA membership is open to all

levels, with five ladders: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. As an incentive, the HTA is waiving the annual membership fee this year (normally priced at $25 for individuals/$35 for families).

The free membership entitles members to play on as many ladders as they want, with matches running from April 15 through

September 30, 2022 in and around the Huntington, NY area (Huntington residency is not required). Players choose where they want to play their matches. To qualify for free 2022 membership, select the Global Tennis Network Register/Log-in link at http://www.htatennis. com and be sure to join your ladder(s) by April 15th.
