Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.

(Cheers to that.)

Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.

Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

www.canine.org

Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Did you know this non-profit runs a Veterans Initiative™? Through this initiative they place service dogs with veterans. Canine Companions’ expertly trained service dogs can perform physical tasks to enhance independence including opening doors, picking up prosthetics and alerting a veteran with hearing loss to important sounds in their environment. With the increase in veterans facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Canine Companions launched a program in 2018 to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD. Dogs are trained to identify each veteran’s unique stressors and perform tasks that directly disrupt escalation of symptoms, thus enhancing their quality of life. The dog supports their handler in crowded public situations by creating barriers and distance that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD. Additional tasks such as nightmare interruption, turning on lights and retrieving items are taught to support veterans’ daily lives.

“When I see a veteran with a Canine Companions service dog, it still gives me goosebumps,” said Colonel E. David Woycik Jr., a highly decorated retired Army O cer and an active Canine Companions Board Member. “I see the satisfaction these veterans get...

the fulfillment of their lives through these dogs. The service dogs are not just partners, they are their right hand, their left hand, their legs and more. We can’t pay the veterans back enough, and I’m proud to be part of an organization serving them.”

Mr. Woycik helped organize a Veterans Day event, Salute Independence , which awards local veterans who continue to serve their communities.

Thanks to his tireless work, this annual event has raised more than $500,000 in total so far to support the organization’s Veterans Initiative™.

If you are a veteran that would like to learn more, please visit www.canine. org, click on Service Dogs and then Veterans.

Looking to make a di erence? You can become a Puppy Raiser with the Long Island Chapter today. Canine Companions volunteer puppy raisers provide specially-bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love. Volunteers are warmly welcomed in other capacities as well, such as Front Desk Reception, General O ce Support, Puppy Transporter and Event Support, amongst other fields. Without loyal volunteers, this organization couldn’t fulfill their mission, so they are beyond grateful for each individual that gives their time and e orts to help.

To learn more about these opportunities, please visit www.canine. org or call 631.561.0200.

NYLIB Appoints EVP Michael Serao

The New York League of Independent Bankers (NYLIB) announced that Michael Serao, Executive Vice President, and Chief Administrative Officer of First Central Savings Bank (FCSB), has been appointed to its Advisory Board.

“Michael’s experience in banking will be a great asset to our organization as we work toward achieving our mission to promote community banking in New York,” said Edward T. Lutz, president of the NYLIB. “We are pleased to welcome Michael as an Advisory Board member and look forward to collaborating with him on our team of senior bankers.”

Serao has been with FCSB since 2017, where he oversees various areas of the bank including retail banking, marketing, IT back-end operations, card services, online banking, and government relations. In addition, he serves as the bank’s CRA Officer.

NYLIB is a not-for-profit organization that provides community-based financial institutions in the New York metropolitan area and the surrounding region with a unique forum for networking and educational opportunities. As part of his new role with NYLIB, Serao will collaborate with other members to identify industry trends and create solutions that positively impact community banking. He joins a group of dedicated bank executives who are committed to promoting growth in the independent banking industry while ensuring their banks thrive in an ever-evolving financial landscape.

Joseph Pistilli, FCSB Chairman and founding Chairman of NYLIB, reflected on this moment within the historical principles of NYLIB and was thrilled about Serao’s appointment to help carry the torch into the future: “For a number of years, I and a group of affiliates always spoke about organizing a

Harborfields’ “Zephyr” Magazine Named “Excellent” In REALM Contest

Harborfields High School’s annual “Zephyr” student publication, led by Editor in Chief Emma Byrom and “Zephyr” club adviser Eugenia Ritter, was recently awarded the rank of Excellent by the National

grassroots organization to help community banks with their challenges and regulatory issues as well as to share and grow from their unique experiences, I was honored to be chosen as that organization’s first Chairman alongside many better nominees than me. The organization had a mission and purpose back then and it continues today: It was to instill the deep roots of community banking, ‘I know you and I can help’. The NYLIB stands proud and strong as leadership continues moving forward from their first chairman and president to a fine intellectual, a bright and free-thinking leader such as our President today, Mr. Edward Lutz. Mr. Lutz is advancing the same grassroots goals and foresight we had back then, only better. That’s why today it is with great pleasure and honor to congratulate EVP Michael Serao of First Central Savings Bank as one of the newest members of the NYLIB leadership team.”

Serao’s dedication to serving the future of community banking

is reflected in his lifelong commitment to volunteerism. He has a lifetime of experience serving on various nonprofit boards and was recently appointed to the Advisory Board of Life’s WORC whose mission is to support people with intellectual disabilities and autism. In 2013, Serao was appointed as a member of the Congressional Community Banking Roundtable led by thenCongresswoman Carolyn Maloney who served as a senior member of the Congressional Financial Services Committee and Chairwoman of the House Oversight Committee.

“I’m very excited to be selected as the new board member of the New York League of Independent Bankers,” said Serao. “As we continue to strengthen our industry, increase market share. and create opportunities for the future, I look forward to working with the New York League of Independent Bankers as we tackle some of the most pressing issues facing our industry today.”

Local Small Business Owner Opens A Refuge For Veterans

Pictured Above: Ruby’s Whisper

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon, a local small business serves vulnerable communities, such as seniors and homeless individuals across Long Island. Owner Eileen Scanlon has a heart for helping others and is actively involved in doing so. When she became aware of the fast growing rate of displaced/homeless veterans, she decided to embark on an effort to create an “intentional home share” for these individuals.

“In New York, rents and home prices are skyrocketing, which is forcing many to leave the state,” said Scanlon. “Even for those who stay here, owning a home is becoming quite unattainable. I wanted to embark on a mission that allowed me to offer a home for veterans in need, where they can live under one roof. They would share expenses and all upkeep the residence, allowing for camaraderie to blossom, but we would keep prices low.”

With a head full of dreams and a heart full of passion, Eileen purchased Ruby’s Whisper, an old 1700’s Tavern turned home in Hyde Park, NY, which she is now converting to a home share

for four to five low income veterans. The property is just a stones throw away from Marist College and the Vanderbilt/Roosevelt Estates, with public transportation nearby.

“The home will offer comfort, solace, space and a feeling of yesteryear,” said Eileen. “There are five lovely sized bedrooms, a spacious living room and cozy kitchen. The home will be furnished with the help of selfless individuals/ organizations that kindly donated items. The backyard offers veterans the ability to grow their own food and the veterans that stay with us can also utilize two large sheds for storage and there are two separate driveways in which will accommodate four vehicles. A family style home share like this for vets might mean the difference between paying rent and being able to pay their monthly food bill; a home share allows them to keep their monthly expenses much lower compared to if they were renting a place on their own.”

The home is undergoing renovations that will hopefully be finalized by the end of this summer.

“I have titled this whole project Heye’s Haven for Heroes, and I’m looking to have it fully incorporated as a 501C3 Non-Profit Organization as soon as possible. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity at this stage in my life, where I can pay forward in a way that I feel would make my father and grandfather, both veterans, rather proud.”

A GoFundMe Page has been created, where donations are being accepted to help assist with the price of renovations.

If you are interested in making a donation, please scan the QR below or visit www.heyeshaven.com/ about-us and click VISIT OUR GOFUNDME PAGE. “I’m so thankful for any donations, they truly help make a difference.”

If you are a veteran in need that is interested in learning more, such as becoming a resident at this special home, please contact Eileen Scanlon at 516.477.0469.

Douglas Elliman Realty, one of the largest independent residential real estate brokerages in the United States, announced that it has promoted its Senior Executive Regional Manager of Sales for Hamptons and North Fork, Todd Bourgard, to Chief Executive Officer of Long Island, Hamptons and North Fork, effective immediately. In his new role, Mr. Bourgard will oversee operations

throughout the entire Long Island region, totaling 36 Elliman offices and over 2,000 real estate agents located throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, the Hamptons and the North Fork, and Bayside, Queens.

Additionally, Melody Newberry, who has served under Bourgard as VP of Operations, Hamptons and North Fork, will also be promoted to VP of Operations, Long Island, Hamptons and North Fork.

Bourgard’s predecessor, Ann Conroy, has been appointed Chairwoman of Douglas Elliman Long Island.

“Stepping into this role is the biggest honor of my career,” said Bourgard. “The experience of working alongside the best managers, agents and staff in the business is so rewarding and a true

I’m inspired every day by the talent in this region, the power of the Douglas Elliman brand, the strength of our operations, technology initiatives and growth efforts, and our incredible executive leadership. I’m thrilled to be a part of it all, and as we join our Hamptons and North Fork operations with greater

“Todd has long been an integral member of the Douglas Elliman senior leadership team, spurring our tremendous growth in the Hamptons and on the North Fork, recruiting many new top-performing agents, while retaining the great talent we have attracted over the years,”

said Howard M. Lorber, Executive Chairman of Douglas Elliman. “Under his leadership, Elliman has cemented its position as market leader on the East End of Long Island, with record-breaking numbers in closed sales volume and revenue growth for the last several years. Continued From 15

wife Mrs. Robyn. Chacon and Eagle Candidate son Matthew Chacon at the Troop 125 Court of Honor, on February 28th.

As the Boy Scouts of America celebrate their 113 years of serving youths, local Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Explorer Crews attended and participated in the annual

“A Scout is Reverent” recognitions during the Scout Sunday Services at various local Catholic and Protestant Churches and the Jewish Scout Sabbath services at area temples and synagogues during the month of February. Troop 125 Boy Scouts (sponsored by the Suffolk Y-Jewish Community Center) were among other Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout

Packs who participated and helped to lead the services both in person and via zoom at Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, Dix Hills Jewish Center, and at East Northport Jewish Center where Troop 125’s Life Scout Austin Schnitzer assisted Rabbi Ian Silverman in leading the Friday evening 2023 Scout Sabbath services.
