Autism Communities (Deer Park, NY, www. autismcommunities. org), a private, 501(c) (3) organization, whose mission is to provide housing solutions for adults with autism in independent, safe, and inclusive living environment, has created a new resource for individuals with autism and their families. Club AC offers monthly social and educational events for adults with autism and their families. Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar representatives present a check for $12,091 to David Fox, sergeant, United States Marine Corps Reserve and Nick D’Andrea, chief warrant officer 4, Toys for Tots Coordinator, on Wednesday, February 24. The funds were raised during Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar’s 22nd annual fundraising campaign in support of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys

for Tots program, which distributes new toys to as many underprivileged children as possible to provide a tangible sign of hope during the Christmas season.

This year, Applebee’s also introduced its own “Tots for Tots” program, offering guests an additional way to donate by adding tater tots to any order for just $3, with each sale going directly to the organization. Since

its inception, Applebee’s locations owned and operated by Doherty Enterprises have raised $4.9 million through its Toys for Tots fundraising campaign to benefit local communities in Florida, Georgia, Long Island and New Jersey. In just 2020 alone, Toys for Tots distributed 20.2 million toys to 7.4 million children.

Brewing The Perfect Cup Of Tea Brewing the perfect cup of tea involves a few different variables. One of the components of the process is understanding how water temperature will bring out the best flavor in the tea. According to the independent tea company Two Teas and Bud, if teas are not steeped at hot enough temperatures, they may lack a full depth and breadth of flavor. The darker the tea, the hotter the water temperature should typically be. The basic rule of thumb is that black tea and herbal teas should steep at a full boil, which is between 208 F and 212 F. Green and white teas are more delicate. When preparing such teas, the water should be at just offboil temperatures, between 170 F and 185 F. If you are brewing loose tea, scoop 1 teaspoon per large cup of water (around 12 ounces). In fact, teaspoons get their name due to their use when measuring tea.

This Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse Experience Makes a Huge Impact on Long Island & Beyond The Farmingville Historical Society was formed in 1992 to preserve and restore the Bald Hills OneRoom Schoolhouse. The Bald Hills Schoolhouse is a one-room Greek Revival Schoolhouse built in 1850.

It stands on its original foundation on Horseblock Road in Farmingville and served the Farmingville community until 1929. After 84 years of being closed, the Schoolhouse was re-opened in November 2013 to educate the community through student field trips, history speaker presentations, historic events and now through The Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations.

Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued.

To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck.

Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true.

Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Kathy is a 74 year old resident of Middle Island who was nominated by one of her friends. She has trouble hearing, but continues to be an active participant in the Catholic Daughters of America and the first one to jump in and help out, according to her nominator. She is also very active in the parish senior club and pre-COVID she attended all the functions.

Kathy needed hearing aids, but could not afford them on her fixed income. However, after being nominated and chosen, The Twilight Wish Foundation was able to grant her wish of receiving hearing aids! This was a life changing experince for all involved.

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions.

Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions.

Elwood BOE Recognizes ‘Boyd Stars’ And Nursing Staff

The Elwood School District Board of Education was once again pleased to recognize outstanding students and staff at its meeting on Feb. 11.

James H. Boyd Intermediate School Principal called upon students Julianne Froh, Madelyn Moreno and Kayla Winters, to thank them publicly for their continued efforts in keeping their classmates and school community connected during the pandemic.

As student council members, each took it upon themselves to create thoughtful videos, in which they shared tips for staying positive, general hygiene and proper handwashing tutorials, as well as a love of reading.

Dr. Toscano described the students as “true role

models” with a “focus for helping others,” earning them the title of “Boyd Stars.”

To continue with the commendations portion of the evening, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert welcomed Director of Physical Education, Health, Athletics and Nursing David Shanahan to the podium to introduce the district’s nursing staff.

However, before allowing him to speak on behalf of his staff, Dr. Bossert first insisted upon praising Mr. Shanahan for his unwavering dedication to the anticipated return of Elwood athletics on Feb. 1.

“With David at the helm, I feel very comfortable that our student athletes not only have the opportunity to return to play, but do

so in a healthy and safe way,” Dr. Bossert said.

“Mr. Shanahan worked sunrise to sunset to make sure that everything went smoothly.”

Mr. Shanahan went on to introduce the nursing team from each of the district’s schools, commending them for, not only implementing, but embracing new health and safety protocols and procedures in September.

“It is said that adversity builds character and COVID-19 certainly has.

But more importantly, adversity has revealed the character of these outstanding individuals,” Mr. Shanahan said. “They’re a hard-working team, they’re team oriented, caring and professional.

It’s been my honor to work beside them.”

Spreading Positivity Through “Project Hope” Initiative The Bristal Assisted Living at East Northport was spreading love through their “Project Hope” initiative. Residents presented Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland posters with messages of love and inspiration in anticipation of Valentine’s Day and greeted her with cheerful songs about positivity and hope. The posters were created as part of a joint community effort called Project HOPE, a symbol of Positivity and Hope, to encourage senior citizens in long term care, rehabs and local communities to stay optimistic and hopeful.

“I had such a great time

celebrating Valentine’s Day with the Bristal,” said Legislator Berland.

“I really enjoyed singing ‘Accentuate the Positive’ with John and Beatrice.

Learning and Activities at James H. Boyd Intermediate School Elwood School District students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School have been busy making memories.

Despite restrictions and health protocols put in place due to COVID-19, students have had countless opportunities to interact with their classmates and participate in exciting activities and academics.

On Feb. 12, third graders in

Ms. Woods’ class participated in a writing workshop to discuss the book, “Because of Winn-Dixie,” by Katie DiCamillo.

Students recognized one of the book’s themes: “thoughtfulness,” and shared examples of how they can be thoughtful in their own lives.

Down the hall, third graders in Ms. Noon’s class worked hard on improving

their mathematics skills with a lesson in measuring area. Similarly, Ms. Musto’s fifth graders refined their math skills as they compared fractions, mixed numbers and decimals.

Ms. Musto’s students also recently completed a fun writing assignment to commemorate the New Year. Students shared their New Year’s resolutions and

Ms. Warren’s fourth grade students recently celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Each designed a book and filled its pages with stories about Dr. King’s childhood, his influence on the Civil Rights Movement and the importance of honoring those contributions today.

Third, fourth and fifth grade speech students in Ms. Siefert’s class recently wrote and illustrated personal letters that they sent to older adults in the community.

In an effort to give back, students shared stories about their studies, as well as activities both in and out of school.

On Feb. 12, fifth graders in Ms. McLeod’s class read the children’s book, “Tadpole’s Promise,” by Jeanne Willis to culminate their unit on research skills and credible sources. To test their knowledge, students listed facts about caterpillars and tadpoles using the internet and their own personal experiences.

Ms. McLeod’s students also recently completed a writing assignment designed to teach them about mindfulness. Students wrote about their goals for the future, which ranged from becoming a better reader to being prepared for middle school.
