Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

www.canine.org

Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.

the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.

WINNERS OF THIS YEAR’S

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:

Teamwork: They believe in the joyful and transforming power of the partnership between an individual and their dog.

Compassionate Service: They treat everyone they serve with respect and empathy.

Integrity: They do what is right guided by honesty, accountability and sincerity.

Community: They practice inclusion and acceptance to build positive relationships within their diverse community.

Excellence: They conduct ourselves with professionalism in pursuit of the highest standards.

Innovation: They continually pursue new ideas to unleash their greatest potential.

Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When

The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.

During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog. Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner. A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.

To learn more about this organization, please visit www.canine.org or call 631.561.0200.

Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more about their Long Island location, located in Medford, NY and find out how you can get involved!

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s varsity wrestling team recently won the title at the Suffolk County Division II Dual Meet Championship at Bay Shore High School.

Elwood Knights Wrestlers

Win Suffolk County Dual Meet Championship

Facing a tough Port Jefferson team in the finals, Glenn (14-6) fell behind 24-8. Guided by coach TJ Brocking, the Knights rallied to win four of their last five to earn a 32-27

victory and the team’s first title since 2015. Moving up two weight classes, senior Anthony Mirando beat Port Jeff’s Cade Delgado to give the Knights their first lead of the meet, before the

Royals retook it.

Glenn wrestler Kevin Vides then pinned Braden Cesarski to secure the championship. The county victory earned Glenn a spot at the NYSPHSAA

Dual Meet Championships at SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.

Tommy Aiello is 28-0 and ranked first in New York State in his weight class,

while Anthony Mirando is 28-1 and ranked fourth. The Knights are currently ranked fourth in the state.

Scouts Participate In Scout Sabbath And Scout Sunday Services

A Scout is Reverent... Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scouts and their adult scouting volunteer leaders participated in the celebration of the Scout Sunday Mass held at St. Thomas More R.C. Church in Hauppauge on February 12,2023 at  St. Thomas More R.C. Church Hauppauge and in the Scout Sabbath via zoom on February 3, 2023 at Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge.

St. Thomas More R.C. Church (which sponsors Boy Scout Troop 343) was one of the Matinecock District (Scouts BSA)’s Host

Churches for the Catholic Faith during the start of National Boy Scout Week and Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge was one of the four area temples to host (either via zoom or hybrid with “in person” services).

In addition to the volunteer uniformed Scouting Leaders, the members of the local Boy Scout Troops, Cub Scout Packs, and Brownie and Girl Scouts participated in and attended the Mass.

Father Antony Asir, who was the Celebrant for the Mass, blessed the Scouts and their leaders during the service. There were scouts from across the nation

that participated via zoom connections at Temple Beth Chai as Rabbi Alan Stein led the Jewish Sabbath services. As the Boy Scouts of America celebrate their 113th year of serving youths, local Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Explorers attended and participated in the annual “A Scout is Reverent” recognitions during the Scout Sunday Services at various local Catholic and Protestant Churches and at the Jewish Scout Sabbath services held locally at area temples and synagogues during the month of February.

Four Thomas J. Lahey Students Prove “Outstanding” At Wordmasters Challenge

Lia Davila, a fifth grader at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District, recently earned a perfect score of 20 in the difficult Blue Division during the first of three meets in this year’s WordMasters Challenge. It is a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 125,000 students annually. Nationally, only 55 fifth graders achieved this result. Other TJL students who achieved Outstanding designation in the meet included fourth grader Fiona Shumack and fifth graders Henry Soper and Sophia Stout.

The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge by the LEAP teacher, Linda Scarth. All four students were honored at the Harborfields Board of Education’s Jan. 18 meeting. The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to

solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight. They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

A Year Of Science For Seven Students From Harborfields

Seven Harborfields High School students – Maeve Baron, Clarissa Bues, Adeline Chunton, Alexis Ebanks, Katie Smith, Sara Tovar-Guacaneme and Emily Xie – are currently participating in the Science Journal Club at Cold Spring Harbor

Laboratory, a program that was built exclusively for the Harborfields Science Research program. Throughout the school year, the students regularly meet with the library archivist and various scientists to discuss and present scientific journal

articles. They have also had a chance to see behind the scenes of a few stateof-the-art laboratories as well as access the archives containing some of the original works of the many famous Cold Spring Harbor Labs scientists from the past century.

Tom Donnelly’s Pet Food Drive For Baxter’s Pet Pantry Of LI

Suffolk County Legislator

Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 12th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares.org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have generously

donated to this annual drive.

All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets.

Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code requirements, all pet

food must be unopened and in original packaging. For more information or to make an appointment to donate outside of these hours, call (631) 854-4433.

“Hard times impact all members of the family, including our animal companions,” said Legislator Donnelly. “Families shouldn’t have to decide between feeding themselves and feeding their beloved pets. I am happy to partner with Long Island cares again on this important and much needed cause.”

No Kid Hungry Awards $20,000 To The American Academy Of Pediatrics New York Chapter 2 To Combat Child Hunger On Long Island

No Kid Hungry announced that it has awarded $20,000 to the American Academy of Pediatrics New York Chapter 2 to train Long Island pediatricians on how to screen for the effects of food insecurity and connect families in need with food assistance.

One in 7 children face hunger in New York. As trusted family confidants, pediatricians have unique insight into the lives of children and families. In their first five years, the average child visits a pediatrician 20 times.

The American Academy of Pediatrics New York Chapter 2 will use these trainings to develop and implement a screening tool for food

insecurity to triage all pediatric patients. The chapter will host nutrition workshops for parents and patients as well as identify family advisors to support and advocate for patients who are facing food insecurity.

“There is no voice that families trust more than their pediatrician. We are so proud to be partnering with the American Academy of Pediatrics here in New York to mobilize doctors in the fight against child hunger,” said Rachel Sabella, Director of No Kid Hungry New York. “Pediatricians are usually the first to notice a change in a child’s health. This additional training will help them screen children for

signs of food insecurity and provide families with more resources to secure help.”

“Nutrition plays a critical role in children’s overall health and development, and pediatricians are here to partner with families to ensure they have access to healthy food,” said Moira Szliagyi, MD, PhD, FAAP, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Recently highlighted in the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health, this grant is part of a national effort to provide pediatricians with the additional training needed to screen for food insecurity. No Kid Hungry will provide and offer

three different learning models to pediatricians based on each physician’s time capacity and work schedule. Pediatricians will be able to refer patients’ families to grocery benefits like SNAP and WIC, as well as other local and state resources for families through these learning models, which are the following:

A Self-Driven Online Learning Site called PediaLink will offer training materials that physicians can use to learn more about screening and referrals on their own time. An Interactive Training Model lets pediatricians receive training through a self-directive, interactive series of programs.

A Live Virtual Training

Model called the “Extension for Community Health Outcomes” will enable physicians to receive handson training.
