Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia.

The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the

study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Elwood BOE Honors Contributors To Community

The Elwood Board of Education kicked off its meeting on Jan. 28 by honoring community members, teachers, staff and students for their “significant contributions” to the community in the age of COVID-19.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert publicly thanked the district’s food service workers for their commitment to providing healthy meals to families throughout the global pandemic, beginning in March when school buildings closed.

Contributing to that effort was Michael Alfano,

owner of Chefs of New York in East Northport. As part of the district’s “Pizza Fridays” initiative, Mr. Alfano donated, on average, 20-30 pies per week, which were delivered to families in need within the Elwood community.

The board also recognized Elwood Middle School art teacher Amy Lindenbaum for her efforts in supporting the social emotional needs of Elwood Middle School students, faculty and staff. Ms. Lindenbaum has been instrumental in the implementation and continued success of the school’s “Mindful Moment

Mondays” initiative, which seeks to empower viewers to stay positive.

To conclude the commendations portion of the evening, Elwood Middle School Assistant Principal Dawn Valle called upon the student crew members of the Nightly News weekly broadcast. Each week, students showcase exciting schoolwide events, daily announcements, weather forecasts, fun facts and unique surveys.

“These students are very talented and have a very bright future ahead of them,” Ms. Valle said. “They continue to lift our spirits during the pandemic.”

Students at Boyd write ‘I Have A Dream’ speeches

Remote students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School recently met with Library Media Specialist Irene Kossowsky for a lesson on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In celebration of his birthday on Jan. 18, Mrs. Kossowsky read “The Cart That Carried Martin,” by Eve Bunting. The picture book, illustrated by Don Tate, focuses on the funeral procession of Dr. King and his influence as a leader of

the African American Civil Rights Movement.

Students also learned about Dr. King’s famous “I have a dream,” speech from Aug. 28, 1963. Inspired by his words, third, fourth and fifth graders were tasked with writing three, six or nine dreams of their own— dreams that would help make the world a better place.

One such fourth grade student, wrote about improving financial stability

to eliminate poverty, increasing educational spending and protecting the environment.

He wrote, “Martin Luther King has a dream that different people of backgrounds could coexist in peace. I have six dreams that I believe could make a difference in our world.

I believe that if my dreams became a reality, they could be positively impactful.”

“The Great Kindness Challenge” As part of the school’s focus on character development for students, Norwood Avenue Elementary has invoked “The Great Kindness Challenge.” The challenge consists of completing 50 acts of kindness, and those who finish are rewarded with their photo posted in the hallways as a recognition of their commitment to the challenge and to being kind.

To help inspire and motivate the students, the challenge included five themed days this year, including a “Peace, Love and Kindness” day where students dresses as hippies and an “I Dream of Kindness” day for students to wear their pajamas. The challenge was developed by the school’s Leadership Club to support the focus on kindness as part of character development. It also spans all grade levels,

so any student can partake.

Thus far, both students and their families have been very supportive and have enjoyed checking off their acts of kindness for the challenge. Additionally, students created a video of kindness, sharing kind words and support for one another. The video was then shared with families and all students to help inspire them to finish the challenge.

Extremely cold temperatures can cause serious problems for your pets who are outside even for short periods of time.

Most pets are not bred to withstand temperatures below freezing, and even those that are if not acclimated to the cold are at risk. When is it too cold? A good rule of thumb is, if its too cold for you to be outside without a coat, it’s also too cold for your pet.

vessels and speed up the build-up of plaque that can block blood flow. Higher blood pressure forces the heart to work harder and increases a person’s risk for heart disease.

So what about sodium, a mineral so valued, and indeed vital to human existence, that it’s led to wars and created countless devotees in kitchens over the centuries? If it’s flavor cooks are aiming for, it’s possible to reduce reliance on sodium and increase the use of fresh herbs without sacrificing flavor. The Importance Of Rest Regular exercise has been linked to a host of health benefits. People who exercise regularly can lower their risk for chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes, and routine exercise can improve mood and potentially delay the onset of cognitive decline.

As vital as physical activity is to a healthy lifestyle, there is such a thing as too much exercise.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, rest is an important part

of training. Without ample rest, the body does not have time to recover before the next workout. That lack of rest not only adversely affects performance, but also increases a person’s risk for health problems, including injuries that can sideline athletes for lengthy periods of time.

Committed athletes may have a hard time recognizing when they are pushing themselves too hard, and the line between perseverance and overdoing it can be thin. Many athletes credit their ability to push themselves mentally and physically with helping them

achieve their fitness goals and thrive as competitors. But it’s vital that athletes learn to recognize the signs that suggest they’re

exercising too much.

The USNLM notes that the following are some signs of overdoing it with an exercise routine.

• An inability to perform at your established level • Requiring longer periods of rest between workout sessions • Feeling tired • Feeling depressed • Experiencing mood swings or irritability • Difficulty sleeping • Feeling sore muscles or heavy limbs • Suffering overuse injuries such as runner’s knee, achilles tendinitis, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis • Loss of motivation • Getting more colds • Unintended weight loss • Feelings of anxiety The USNLM urges anyone experiencing these symptoms to rest

completely for between one and two weeks.

After that period of rest, the body should be fully recovered.

However, if any of these issues linger after two weeks, seek the advice of a health care provider.

A health care provider may recommend additional rest and/ or conduct a series of tests to determine if an underlying issue is causing any of the aforementioned symptoms.

Rest is as vital to an effective exercise regimen as proper technique, ensuring the body has ample time to recover and reducing the risk of overuse injuries.

I felt a deep void when my wife of 53 years was gone but I had to move on somehow, so I searched the internet for ways I might help others going through the same hardship and happened across Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) in need of volunteer office help. Since I was a C.P.A., I thought I’d give it a try and three years later I’m a member of BBCC’s allvolunteer Board as well as it’s Treasurer.

When I remember my late wife’s dark, frightening, cancer filled days, I cringe to think there are people in this world who must go through this nightmare alone - which is not the case in the Babylon Township because residents have BBCC. Most people BBCC help do not have a devoted healthy caregiver and many are in financial distress, so the variety of free services BBCC’s staff of angels provide is an inexpressible blessing.”

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon.

Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon.

From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers.

In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you.

The success of the BBCC is made possible primarily through their volunteers.

This Coalition has three staff members, so volunteers are so important to them, volunteering not because they have the time, but because they have the heart to do so. Volunteering does not only benefit the cause, but it greatly benefits the person doing so as well. Focusing on others is a great way for one to heal, self-reflect and find joy.

Meteorologists have many tools at their disposal to help forecast storms and other phenomena, but it is impossible to predict the weather with 100 percent accuracy.

When the weather takes a turn for the worse, the National Weather Service may issue certain notices to prepare the public.

Fun Facts About Lefties Left-handed, lefty, southpaw - these are all terms used to describe people who favor their left hands for writing, throwing a ball and myriad other activities. It is estimated that between 10 and 12 percent of all people are left-handed. Although that makes southpaws an undeniable minority, the number of left-handed people is creeping up.

Sports Proclivity Being left-handed may confer an advantage for

athletes. Wayne Gretzky, Sandy Koufax and Martina Navratilova are just a few of the many accomplished left-handed sports legends. Sports scientist Florian Loffing with the Institute of Sport Science, University of Oldenburg in Germany found that in sports where there is a short time constraint, lefties appeared to excel.

That could be why he found 26 percent of the top male players in table tennis are lefties. And

sports like baseball and cricket are dominated by left-handed players.

Health Risks And Benefits According to a 2010 study published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers found those who were left-handed had an increased risk for dyslexia, ADHD and certain mood disorders. It could be tied to the hemispheres of the brain and how 30 percent of left-handed people are partial to the

right hemisphere or have no dominant hemisphere for language functioning.

Conversely, lefties can bounce back from stroke or other brain-related injuries more readily than righties, according to data published in 2015 in Scientific Reports. A study published in Laterality found that left-handed people are less likely to suffer arthritis and ulcers.

More Creative Lefties are more likely to be artistic or innovative.

Research published in the American Journal of Psychology found there is some evidence that lefthanded people are better at divergent thinking, a method of idea generation that explores many possible solutions. The Left-Handers Club, a prolefty advocacy group, also found that left-handed individuals tend to be drawn to careers in the arts, music, sports, and information-technology fields.
