Angie Carpenter, Suffolk County Treasurer, reminds all new property owners that the deadline to apply for your BASIC School Tax Relief (STAR) exemption is March 1st, 2015, but because the first is a Sunday, it is extended to Monday, March 2nd, 2015. “If you previously had the exemption on a prior residence, you must apply for this exemption with your assessor on your new property,” cautions Treasurer Carpenter. “However, all residents who currently still reside in their same place of residence as prior years and have reapplied with the State Department of Taxation and Finance do not need to do anything at this time,” states Carpenter.

We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension. There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting. Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers. On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

National Geo Bee Emma Riley, an eighth-grade student at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District, took first place in the school’s Geographic Bee Competition. To qualify for the
competition, sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students took a pre-test in their social studies classes, with the top 26 scorers moving on to compete in an oral competition. In the final three rounds, Riley and student Sam Phillips went
head-to-head with Riley eventually claiming the first place title. Riley will move on to take a written test to see if she is eligible to compete in the New York State National Geographic Bee on March 27th.

BASIC STAR is available to all New York residents whose combined total adjusted gross income does not exceed $500,000 regardless of age. This exemption may only be applied to your primary residence. Any senior receiving or now eligible for the ENHANCED STAR exemption must also submit their completed applications to your local assessor by March 2nd, 2015. Broken Lines By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Used to be, if you wanted to get in touch with someone, you picked up the phone and called. If you couldn’t reach them immediately, you left a message – either on an answering machine or with another person associated with them – and then waited patiently for a return call. Tedious, right? So why is it that, these days, with every gadget and method of communicating imaginable, it seems more difficult than ever to actually, you know, communicate?
Between cell phones and texting and social media, there are more ways to reach friends and family – and even complete strangers – than ever before. Everyone has at least one gadget easily accessible at all times, and yet how often do you find yourself waiting hours (or days) for a response? That is, if one ever comes. It seems odd to think that communication could almost be made too easy, but that is precisely what has occurred. With the constant influx of e-mails, texts, photo and video messages, Facebook and Instagram notifications
and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on. Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately. In a timely manner.

Applicants performed their talent in front of five judges, who narrowed the number down to the final 42 acts selected for the two performances. With the help of community members, students, faculty and staff members, the production was brought to life with
spotlights, dance routines, musical performances and more. The money raised through the sold out performances will go toward 15 $1,000 scholarships for students in the graduating Class of 2015. “It’s truly a community effort,” Kraham said. “It has morphed into a very popular activity in the school district and all the kids and parents look forward to it.”

On Thursday, April 30th, the Huntington Town Board will recognize teen poets from the community selected for participation in the Town’s Poetry for the HART Public Art Initiative. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the Walt Whitman Birthplace (246 Old Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station). The winning teen poets will receive certificates in an award ceremony with members of the Huntington Town Board. Immediately following conclusion of the award ceremony there will be a poetry reading led by husband and wife poets Terri Muuss and Matt Pasca at which each of the teen poets selected for the program will read their winning poems. A brief reception will follow. The award ceremony, reading, and reception are free and open to the public. Terri Muuss is an author, director, performer, social worker and motivational speaker. She earned her BA in Theatre from Kean University; trained at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City; and studied for
several years at Michael Howard Studios. In 1998, Muuss wrote the onewoman show Anatomy of a Doll, named “Best Theatre: Critics’ Pick of the Week” by the New York Daily News, which she has performed throughout the US and Canada since. Terri has directed numerous Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway productions, including Rich Ryan’s Lemon Meringue, Deborah Ortiz’s Changing Violet, Veronica Golos’s A Bell Buried Deep, Athena Reich’s rock opera Athena Under Attack and Lisa Ramirez’s Exit Cuckoo. Her first book, Over Exposed, was nominated for the 2014 Pushcart Prize in Poetry. As a licensed social worker (MSW, Hunter College), Muuss specializes in the use of the arts as a healing mechanism for trauma survivors and teaches a course at Rutgers University to social workers entitled “Youth Development Through the Written Arts.” She also performs with fellow poets/social workers Susan Dingle and Maggie Bloomfield as the “Poets
of Well-Being.” The trio recently ran a workshop at the Expressive Therapies Conference in NYC and served on a panel about the therapeutic utilization of writing at the 2015 AWP Conference in Minneapolis. As a motivational speaker and life coach, Terri keynotes at conferences and works extensively with addiction/ abuse populations. She recently left her position as Communications Coordinator of the Bay Shore School District in order to return to a school Social Work position with the Farmingdale School District. This new job, along with her private life-coaching/therapy practice, enables Terri to more fully use her passion to help motivate and support students/ clients to move forward in exciting, new directions. Matt Pasca is an author, teacher and editor. After earning a BA in English from Cornell University and MAT in English from Stony Brook University, Pasca signed on at Bay Shore High School, where he has taught since 1997. A 2003 New York State
Teacher of Excellence, Pasca curates a Visiting Writers Series at his school and advises its literary-art magazine, The Writers’ Block, named Most Outstanding High School Literary-Art Magazine for both 2010 and 2011 by the American Scholastic Press Association. He has served as a keynote speaker for both the Nassau Reading Council and Long Island Language Arts Council and been a repeat presenter at the New York State English Council’s annual conference. Pasca serves as a reviewer and copy editor for the Long Island Authors Group and is frequently asked to facilitate creative writing workshops and classes at conferences, colleges and continuing education programs around the tri-state area. His first book, A Thousand Doors, was nominated for the 2012 Pushcart Prize in Poetry and his second collection, Raven Wire, is forthcoming. Terri and Matt are the parents of two boys, Rainer and Atticus, who are former political correspondents for The

Huntington Beautification Fund to be used to assist in financing the Town’s revitalization, anti-blight and community renewal efforts. The funding will come from part of the registration fees assessed against properties placed on the Town’s Blight List. - granted permission for Concerned Long Island Mountain Bicyclists (CLIMB) to continue in the maintenance of mountain bicycling trails at Meadowlark Park, which is part of the Veterans Park complex in East Northport. The singletrack trail in Meadowlark Park is the only such trail in a Town park. CLIMB’s volunteers donate about 250 hours a year to the trail’s maintenance. - approved transferring $500,000 from Highway Fund reserves for the Highway department to purchase additional snow
removal materials. - extended for 90 days the time to consider an application for a zone change that would allow construction of a QuickChek convenience market and an LA Fitness center on the site of the former Tom Rice/ Hagstrom Buick property in Huntington. - scheduled a March 10th public hearing on a proposed update to the Town’s Plumbing Code to make it conform to changes in state law, including revised licensing requirements for conducting plumbing system installations and revised permit requirements to facilitate installation, alteration or repairs to plumbing systems in the Town.
Code Revision Counsel As part of the ongoing effort to examine and revise the Town of Huntington’s ethics code, the Town Board voted at its February 10th meeting to hire a Roslyn law firm with expertise in municipal ethics as the new counsel to the Town’s Board of Ethics and Financial Disclosure. Steven G. Leventhal and the firm of Leventhal, Cursio, Mullaney & Spector will actively assist the Town in the revision effort, which has been ongoing for several months and will include public comments and suggestions. The effort began when Supervisor Frank P. Petrone asked Councilwoman Tracey Edwards to research ethics codes in other jurisdictions and to explore revisions. Councilwoman Edwards has been working with Howard Glickstein, dean emeritus of Touro Law School and the Ethics
Board chair, on possible changes. Mr. Leventhal and his firm were chosen based on their qualifications, in response to a request for proposals issued late last year. At the time, Supervisor Petrone noted that the RFP process was designed to ensure transparency in the selection process and to attract the most qualified firms. “I am excited that the request for proposal process has attracted someone with Mr. Leventhal’s impressive credentials,” Supervisor Petrone said. “I expect his advice to be invaluable as Councilwoman Edwards, Dean Glickstein and I work on the revisions that will best serve the public.” “The process is on track, and I look forward to tapping Mr. Leventhal’s expertise in
municipal ethics matters as we move forward,” Councilwoman Edwards said. Councilwoman Edwards said the revisions would also incorporate comments from the Ethics Board’s annual public meeting, scheduled for March 5th. The meeting is held annually for the Board to take testimony from the general public on whether the Code is functioning effectively and to hear recommended improvements Mr. Leventhal is a former member and chair of the Nassau County Board of Ethics who has lectured and written extensively on the subjects of government, legal and corporate ethics. He has been engaged frequently to provide ethics advice, training and continuing professional education to municipal officers and employees throughout
New York State, municipal associations, bar associations, law firms and universities. He also serves as co-chair of the Ethics and Professionalism Committee of the New York State Bar Association’s Municipal Law Section. “Steven Leventhal is a well-known and highly respected authority on government ethics,” Dean Glickstein said. “I am sure that he will provide a valuable service as counsel to the Huntington Board of Ethics and Financial Disclosure.” He will replace James Matthews, who was elected to the Suffolk County District Court. The Town Board resolution sets the firm’s compensation at the rate of $200 an hour, with a maximum annual amount of $15,000. In other action, the Town Board: established a

Teens in the community from ages 14-18 were invited last fall to submit poems for consideration in the program. This spring a selection panel comprised of the poets Terri Muuss and Matt Pasca, joined by Jim Metcalfe (Huntington Station), a member of the Town’s Public Art Advisory Committee, will review the 236 different submissions from 202 different teen poets and narrow the choices to the winning poems. Additional partners in this project include Heckscher Museum of Art; Huntington Arts Council; The Long Islander, which has pledged to publish the winning poems; REACH CYA; Town of Huntington Youth

Lifesaving Efforts Lauding him for his heroic efforts in helping to save the life of a young boy, Suffolk County Legislators Lou D’Amaro and William Lindsay III presented New York State Trooper Christopher Nolan, a Melville resident and volunteer firefighter, with a Proclamation at the Legislature’s February General Meeting in Hauppauge. He was joined at the presentation by his wife Michelle and children Sarah and Christopher. Trooper Nolan, who is also the Melville Fire Department’s Third Assistant Chief, was on duty as a New York State Trooper on January 3rd when he heard a call about an 8 year-old boy in
respiratory distress. The boy was in route to the hospital in his mother’s car on the Southern State Parkway when he suddenly suffered a seizure and stopped breathing. The boy’s mother pulled over and after Trooper Nolan arrived on the scene, he promptly determined that the child was suffering from a blocked airway. Using his emergency medical training, Trooper Nolan was able to open the boy’s airway and get him breathing again. He continued to administer critical treatment until emergency vehicles arrived and took the boy to the hospital, where he spent ten days before making a full recovery.
“The New York State Troopers do a tremendous job to serve, protect and defend our residents,” said Legislator Lindsay III. “Christopher Nolan displayed true courage and heroism for resuscitating a young child and I thank him for his immediate, decisive action and for his exceptional dedication to ensuring the safety of those in our community.” “There is no question that Trooper Nolan’s quick but calm response was instrumental to this boy’s survival,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “I commend him for his heroic actions and proudly recognize his service to both the local Melville community and the entire region.”

On December 11th, 2014, at 7:08 p.m., the Dix Hills Fire Department was activated for a rescue call reporting an unconscious male at a residence. District Paramedic on-duty Ralph Oswald arrived on scene soon thereafter and notified incoming units that he had a 60-year-old unconscious male that was in Cardiac Arrest. The patient was at the dinner table waiting to eat when he passed out and his wife called 911. Paramedic Oswald, with the assistance of the ambulance crew from 2-825 consisting of Jessica Mattes, Tyler Mielko, and John Marshall, moved the male patient to the
floor and began CPR, while Paramedic Oswald assembled the Lucas CPR device. Shortly thereafter the crew of ambulance 2-825, consisting of EMT Matthew Stio, EMT Richard Sorrentino, Captain/Paramedic Scott DiPino, Michael Englander, Assistant Chief Tom Napolitano and EMT Megan Pereira arrived to assist. Captain/Paramedic DiPino intubated the patient, Paramedic Oswald stared an IV, and with the assistance of the crew administered numerous cardiac medications and shocked the patient once. After a few minutes the patient did regain
a good pulse and blood pressure. The patient then received the new return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) protocol which is basically a very cold saline/ hypothermia treatment. The patient’s condition improved while being transported to Huntington Hospital, and he was discharged after several days and is doing well. The Dix Hills Fire Department Rescue Squad crew was recently recognized for their lifesaving actions and received a Pre-Hospital Save Award from the Suffolk Regional Emergency Medical Services Council.

Technology Dream Team Five Suffolk County Community College students were selected from more than 30 from the east coast to be part of The National Basketball Association’s NBA-Cisco Dream Team at the 2015 NBA All-Star Game in New York City. communications at the AllStar Basketball event this week and weekend. The NBA All Star weekend and games, February 13th-15th are a world class sporting event that will rely on the students to implement the computer network that will carry the event. Network Associate) exam. The courses teach students how to design, configure and manage an information technology (IT) network either in a local company or worldwide interconnection. The CCNA is recognized in the industry as a technical professional working with traditional Ciscobased networks that predominantly include local area network (LAN) and wide area network routers and LAN switches.

At the inaugural Suffolk County Dual Championship Tournament on January 30th and 31st, the ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School Knights varsity wrestling team had to overcome a number of obstacles to claim the first Suffolk County Dual Championship title. For Elwood, this championship run wasn’t just about wins and losses, but about honoring Sean Urda, a fellow classmate who recently passed away. Held at Bay Shore High School, the top sixteen teams across Suffolk
County engaged in several rounds of competitive wrestling matches. With a victory over Copiague and Brentwood, the Knights were one step closer to the championship round. After a 37-30 win against Hauppauge in the semifinals, the Knights were off to the finals were they would go head-to-head against the Rocky Point Eagles. Elwood started off strong with an early 30-3 lead. Rocky Point attempted to make a late comeback but Elwood’s resilience and perseverance was
unbreakable. With a final score of 39-32, the Knights came out on top and were named Suffolk County Dual Champions. “We’ve been talking about this as our number one goal since the tournament was announced as official,” said varsity wrestling Coach TJ Brocking. “It’s a great sign of how good your team is and for a school of our size, the smallest school in Division I in Suffolk, it says a lot about our community and our kids. I couldn’t be more proud of how great the guys performed.”

The pool of 28 candidates for the position ranged from building administrators to sitting superintendents. Nearly all of the candidates were from New York. The district’s search consultants (all of whom are district residents and are donating their time and expertise to the district) have communicated to the Board that the recruitment effort returned a pool
of candidates that demonstrated good depth and the capability to firmly lead the district in line with Board, staff and community expectations. “We are moving forward exactly in line with the process that was first established by our consultant group, and we are delighted with the progress to date,” said Board of Education President Julia Binger. “In recent days, the Board has spent a great deal of time preparing for the interviews by learning more about each finalist candidate, synthesizing the data from the community input processes, and creating questions that will spark
informative dialogues with each of these worthy professionals.” Three of the candidates are central office administrators and one is a building level administrator. There are expected to be several rounds of interviews with the candidates over the next several weeks. While these interviews will be advertised as ‘meetings,’ since a quorum of the Board of Education will be gathered, the interviews are not open to the public. The process is expected to result in the announcement of the new district leader in April.

Basketball Tournament Set Students - more than 50 in all - from Suffolk County Community College’s Radio and Television Production program are gearing up and practicing for what amounts to their Super Bowl Sunday of broadcast production, the 2015 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XV Basketball Tournament that will be hosted for the second consecutive year at the college’s Ammerman
Campus in Selden and livestreamed via SharksTV on the College’s website to hoops-hungry fans. Student camera operators, stage managers, switchers, audio and video technicians are preparing and practicing for the Friday, February 27th to Sunday, March 1st tournament when they will present eight live games over the three days from five camera positions throughout the Brookhaven Gymnasium;
including four instant replay angles. Alan Bernstein, Assistant Academic Chair, Department of Communications said the experience garnered by the students is invaluable. “This is an all hands on deck production and tremendous opportunity for our students to acquire real life production experience,” Bernstein said. Bernstein said that alumni of his program will
also be involved. Among those alumni will be Eric Abram and Rich Ballato, who regularly work on professional sports telecasts in the New York area. Prior to tournament weekend, the students will lay cable, check lighting, conduct sound checks and create graphics and introductions for each of the tournament’s 16 participating teams. Suffolk County Community College has equipped student-based
teams with the skills and systems needed to produce professional, top-quality webcasts, streamed over its website. The college’s remote production van is equipped with state-of the-art Newtek Tricaster 860 production systems and a Newtek 3Play 425 video record and playback system. The student tournament webcast was watched last year by an international audience and by viewers
state-wide. This year’s broadcast will be available from the Suffolk County Community College homepage at www. sunysuffolk.edu during the tournament weekend.

Take Back Day Held The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) collected over 52 boxes of pharmaceutical medications during the first DEC Long Island Pharmaceutical Take Back Day at healthcare facilities, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. Twenty-five long-term healthcare facilities throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties participated in the program, which collects and responsibly destroys unused or expired pharmaceuticals. “Health care facilities can produce large amounts of expired or unused medications and many have
few options for disposal,” said Commissioner Martens. “The success of this collection by DEC is a positive step that will help to protect the environment by preventing medications from entering waterways. We are grateful to all the facilities that enthusiastically agreed to participate in this event.” DEC received funding through the Environmental Fund for $150,000 to expand the program, which already exists in the New York City Watershed. The program is designed to reduce the amount of pharmaceuticals that are “flushed” by facilities and can end up in Long Island’s groundwater, bays and estuaries.
Pharmaceuticals have been detected at low levels in New York State waterways and Long Island’s shallow groundwater. Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment said, “We are thrilled that DEC was able to provide this critical service, which benefits all Long Islanders and goes a long way toward protecting Long Island’s drinking and surface waters from pharmaceutical contaminants. Giving health care facilities a safe and convenient pharmaceutical disposal option has already reduced the number of institutions flushing unused medications,
and now participation in this program needs to be expanded and strengthened in the future.” Participating facilities, made up primarily of nursing, extended care and rehabilitation centers, began storing unused and expired medications in October when they were first contacted by DEC. Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) then visited each of the 25 facilities this week to collect the stored medications and brought them to the Covanta Waste-to-Energy Plant in Westbury, which volunteered its services to incinerate the products. Prescription drug take back efforts began in
the last few years. Prior to these initiatives the normal disposal practice was to flush unwanted drugs. With technological advances in analytical techniques, it is now possible to detect very low levels of drugs in surface water and groundwater. Some drugs pass largely unaltered through wastewater treatment plants and enter rivers and other waterways. Drugs from heath care facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and farms can also find their way into the water. Flushed medications have been found in New York lakes, rivers and streams which can negatively affect the
waterways. A nationwide study done in 1999 and 2000 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) found low levels of drugs such as antibiotics, hormones, contraceptives and steroids in 80 percent of rivers and streams tested. Medications adversely affect fish and other aquatic wildlife and increase the development of drug-resistant bacteria. Deadline Extended In 2011, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) unveiled a historic educational initiative called the FASNY Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York. FASNY announced a deadline extension - to February 20th - for firefighters to apply for the new 2015
semester. “FASNY HELP has been a tremendous success and a vital initiative for fire departments to boost their recruiting of the next generation of firefighters,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. “HELP funding comes from our federal SAFER grant, which has driven recruitment initiatives throughout the state. We urge all interested students to sign up, and apply for this tuition reimbursement program
before the February 20th deadline.” Under FASNY HELP, an individual who hasn’t already achieved a college degree, or has not taken 80 or more college credits, is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic course(s) that the FASNY HELP studentvolunteer firefighter can
pursue either on a fulltime or part-time basis. Starting with the Fall 2013 semester, FASNY HELP was expanded to cover online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the fall and spring semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they
complete their course of study. They must attend the closest community college or one within a 50-mile radius of their residence. Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ options. Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in
