(www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, is looking to generous and animal loving Long Islanders to help it raise funds to feed its herd over this winter. The organization is looking to raise $6,000 to help cover the cost of hay bales.

Pal-O-Mine’s herd, which includes 22 horses, eats 10 bales of hay each day.

Each bale weighs 50 lbs. and costs $10, making PalO-Mine’s monthly hay bill $3,000. By helping the organization raise $6,000, this expense will be covered through March 31st.

Applebee’s 5th Annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest Applebee’s to honor two deserving teachers throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties

Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar recently announced the official launch of its 5th annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest, which recognizes top teachers – as nominated by their students – by rewarding them with a sponsorship check and end-of-year class party. The contest is being offered at Applebee’s restaurants in Long Island owned and operated by local franchisee Doherty Enterprises.

Applebee’s will award two deserving teachers, one in Nassau County and one

in Suffolk County, with a $500 sponsorship check to use toward their classroom for the upcoming 20212022 school year, along with an end-of-year party for their current class*!

To nominate a teacher and enter the contest, students must submit an essay in-person at their local Applebee’s explaining why their teacher deserves to be Applebee’s “Teacher of the Year.” As an additional incentive, students who enter an essay will also receive a free ice cream certificate** for later use.

Essay submissions are

limited to one per student and will be accepted at participating Applebee’s restaurants from through Sunday March 7, no later than 10pm. Winners will be announced on Monday, April 12 and end-of-year parties will be thrown before Sunday, June 27. If end-of-year parties are not viable, class parties will be replaced with two Dinner for Four certificates.

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church & Islip Rotary Help Two At-Risk Groups

St. Mark's Episcopal Church and Islip Rotary are feeding the hungry while supporting the struggling local restaurants.

Called the South Shore Takeout Project, the two groups are conducting a fundraiser of sorts throughout the South Shore communities, asking people to purchase restaurant gift cards so people can purchase a meal for their families. St. Mark’s will then donate the cards to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of Long Island Cares, an organization that supplies church food pantries, senior communities and shelters throughout Suffolk County.

The program is expected to run through the end of March.

“The pandemic has wreaked havoc with our economy,” said St. Mark’s rector, the very reverend Richard E. Simpson." People have lost jobs and can barely feed their families.

A restaurant gift card will either be a much-needed meal or a treat,” he said, adding that February 17 is also Ash Wednesday and pointed to the Bible story of “the feeding of 5000.”

He continued: Restaurant business is down to about 30% of their usual income and relies heavily on takeout or curbside pick-up for revenue. Many are either

closed or due to close.”

Said organizer Irene Ross “We’d like the gift cards to be substantial enough to buy full meals; some restaurants have family or catering packages that could feed an entire family for one night (with maybe even some leftovers for another day’s lunch or dinner).

She continued: We know everyone is experiencing some level of financial distress with the pandemic, so why not pool your resources with others, whether friends, neighbors, co-workers, local businesses, clubs, etc? If many people chip in, that becomes a big number that can feed an entire family.”

The Takeout Project is the brainstorm of Dr. Barbara Bolen of Northport who, over the holidays, was thinking about two at-risk groups: the hungry and struggling restaurants. A Northport restaurant was offering a family meal ($60 to feed four) and she asked the restaurant owner if she knew of a family she could donate a meal to. This led to the idea to involve local food pantries and encourage others to follow suit, and she and her project partner, Carol Crowley, brought in $4000 in just a little over a month.

The Charity of the Month for February is the

Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition www.babylonbreastcancer.org

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon.

Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon.

From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers.

In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you.

Below is a list of all of the programs that the BBCC offers.

Lend A Helping Hand (LAHH): This unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and all types of gynecological cancers, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation.

Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more.

Pink & Teal Exercise Program: This exercise program is designed to help women regain flexibility, stamina and strength following breast or gynecological surgery and/or

cancer treatment.

Clients meet with trained exercise physiologists for one-onone personal training sessions to address their specific physical goals and issues.

Gift Of Health & Inspiration (GOHI): The Gift Of Health & Inspiration program includes a free tote bag, which is designed to be a supportive companion to the newly diagnosed cancer patient. The tote bag is filled with items to assist with your mind, body and soul. The items are nurturing, organic and holistic. They are given to patients at Good Samaritan and St. Catherine’s.

Scholorship Programs: The BBCC offers scholarships to Babylon Township high school seniors who have had a parent or legal guardian with a personal breast and/ or gynecological cancer history. An essay must be submitted to be in the running for a scholarship!

Vision Of Hope Garden (VOHG): There is a VOHG that this coalition started that is located on the southeast corner of Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Engraved bricks can be purchased in memory or in honor of someone who has battled breast or gynecological cancer and they will be installed in this garden. Bricks are available for engraving and installation at a cost of $50 each.

Flowers can have sentimental value, particularly those received as gifts or those that were part of momentous occasions, like weddings. Fresh flowers have finite life spans unless measures are taken to preserve the blooms. The flower experts at ProFlowers say pressing flowers can preserve them for years to come. While flower lovers can invest in a flower press, other heavy objects also can be effective at pressing flowers.

Start by choosing flowers that are either still in bud form or are freshly bloomed.

Dry the flowers out as quickly as possible to prevent browning.

Place the flower between two pieces of white, nontextured paper. Then place all

within the pages of a book. Depending on the size of the book, you may be able to press more than one flower at a time. Place other books on top to weigh down the book with the flowers inside. Change the moisture blotting sheets every few days.

After two to three weeks, the flowers will be completely dry and flat. Remove the flowers carefully using tweezers or fingertips.

Store the fresh flowers in a cool, dry place or consider framing them in a shadow box.
