Simple Ways To Be Good To Yourself Years ago, I was roaming the aisles of Costco and picked up a book, titled, 101 Simple Ways to Be Good To Yourself by Donna Watson Ph.D. I’ve been re-reading it ever since. As we grow older and our responsibilities mount, we lose touch with our own needs. Children, spouses, jobs (second jobs), mortgages, car payments, friends in need…the list is endless. The weekdays bleed into each other in a frenetic blur, and on weekends we can barely catch up on sleep, catch our breath and take the kids to their weekend activities. Sometimes “adulting” can make you want to cry “Uncle.” Most likely, you’re running on fumes. If your battle cry of the moment is, “Stop the ride, I wanna get off!” a few small adjustments can recharge a burnt out battery.

There are plenty of simple ways to be good to you, which will, in turn, help you be good to others.

BREATHE. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, stop right there and breathe. Breathe out all of the air in your body through your mouth. Count to four and

then breathe in through your nose, filling up your abdomen (not your chest). Hold for four seconds. Then, slowly let the air leak out through your mouth as your belly deflates. Repeat.

LAUGH. Make YouTube your friend. I personally love the television show, All In The Family. When I need a good laugh, I cue up a full episode on YouTube and laugh myself silly.

Laughing is good for the soul.

LISTEN. Nothing soothes me like Jazz music. Did you know that brain surgeons play their favorite music in the operating room to take the pressure off? Sometimes, in order to do your best, you have to actually place your attention elsewhere to remain centered and focused.

WALK. Take a walk in nature.

Walk briskly, look at the grass, the trees and the sky. Breathe in the crisp air, feel your body move and your heart rate slightly increase.

Feel your muscles working to move your body.

SPEND TIME WITH ANIMALS. If you have a dog or a cat, spend time cuddling and petting your

animal companion. Really take in their energy. If you don’t live with any animals, consider spending time at a dog park to be around animals, or at a local horse stable.

Spending time around animals is healing.

TAKE A LESSON. You don’t have to make a commitment, time-wise or financially. You can simply take a lesson or two for fun. It will bring a sense of play and adventure to your life. Do it by yourself, or bring a friend or family member along.

TAKE A MINI-BREAK. Look for Groupons or off-season deals for short weekend getaways that are within driving distance, and change your environment for 48 hours...or 24 hours if you must.

MASSAGE. Everywhere you go now, there are massage and nail spas. Carve out 30 minutes and go for a shoulder rub or a relaxing foot rub... just because.

These are just a few of the simple things you can do to be good to yourself. Being good to yourself is like saving money in the bank. You can then spread the wealth to the ones you love.

Operation Underground Railroad Students enrolled in AP World History at Harborfields High School recently stepped up to make a difference in the world.

Groups of students who worked together to research nongovernmental organizations presented and promoted humani-tarian organizations to their classmates as if they were truly a part of the cause. Each class then

voted on the organization that they believed did the most valuable work.

Once each class had a selected organization, classes competed against each other in a “Nickle War,” attempting to raise the most money for their chosen causes.

The class that raised the largest amount of change chose to give the combined $400 to Operation Underground Railroad, a nonprofit organization

that seeks to end human trafficking. Additionally, a local community business offered to match the classes’ combined funds, adding up to $800 to be given to the organization’s cause.

In addition to a moving presentation, students Gavin Storch and Ty Ellenbogen designed awareness bracelets for the cause, crafting each with a leather cord and a bronze ring, which both

students wore during their presentation.

“I annually incorporate this project to help open our students’ eyes to the hardships in this world,” said social studies teacher Mrs. Michelle Da Silva.

“We are so fortunate to live in the community we do, and it’s important to help students realize they can use their good fortune to help others.”

Real-Life Superheroes In order to live up to their name, the Super Hero Club at Harborfields High School holds an annual fundraiser to benefit a specific cause in the surrounding community. This year, on February 13th at 2:45 p.m., the club will be conducting a dodgeball tournament to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital. The cost is $40

per team, and each team requires eight members.

Students involved in the Superhero Clun come together on a bi-monthly basis to discuss all things related to superhero culture, but many commented on enjoying the club for more than just the surface level.

“It’s one thing to just love superheroes and the

culture surrounding the comics,” said student Angie Budhram, “but it’s another thing to step up and be the kind of hero that changes the world around them. Helping the community, even in the smallest ways, can create such an impact… and that’s what we seek to do each year with this fundraiser.”

Easy Vegan Pasta Bolognese

What You Will Need

Pour jar of pasta sauce into a medium or large saucepan, turn on medium heat and stir in diced mushrooms and cooked soy crumbles. Let sauce simmer and then add in tumeric, salt, pepper and red wine; stire altogether, turn heat to low and cover tightly to re-simmer.

1/2 cup diced portobello mushrooms 1/2 cup sweet green peas 1 24 oz. jar of Ragu Traditional Pasta Sauce (no sugar added variety) 2 tablespoons red wine 1 pinch of salt 1 pinch of black pepper 1 sprinkle of turmeric 1/4 package of Smart Ground meatless soy crumbles 2 heaping tablespoons dairy-free butter substitute 1 box of your favorite pasta

Boil water and cook pasta for approximately 10 minutes until al dente. (soft, but slightly firm). Rinse and drain pasta and set aside.

Steam peas in the microwave or 2-3 minutes and stir peas into sauce.

Remove covered sauce from heat.

Plate pasta, pour sauce over pasta and enjoy!

Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each Veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters.

Valentine’s Day is the holiday of expressive romantic overtures towards the one you love.

Where there is amore, there have always been roses.

And why not?

They’re beautiful, they smell sweet, they brighten any room, and unlike chocolates, they don’t come with calories.

Although the universal symbol of romance is the single, long-stemmed red rose, and a bouquet of red roses spells love times a dozen, there is a lush rainbow of roses found in nature for your paramour to enjoy. To be exact, there are over one hundred species of roses found in nature.

Apart from romance, do you want to show your mother, a dear friend or your child that they are special and cared for?

The Paws of War Service Dog Program relies heavily on the support of their community and volunteers. Through this program they are able to provide service dogs and their training to Veterans in need at no cost, truly providing them with a miracle! A service dog can help combat the daily symptoms of PTSD. They are trained to pick up stress signals and intervene with their owner to direct their focus back to a positive environment. They can also greatly increase the quality of life for someone suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury. Paws of War trains service dogs to combat the daily issues that someone suffering from TBI has.

Each service dog given out is intensely trained before handed off to the Veteran.

War Torn Pups Program - This program has brought back dogs from Afghanistan, Syria and Jordan that Service Members have found while out on tour.

Community Education Program - This program allows Paws of War to work with members of their local community.

Through this program, they are able to provide a direct connection between Veterans and the younger population.

Vets to Vets Medical RV - This mobile RV provides certain medical services for service animals at no cost to Veterans!

Paws of War is growing and has been recognized by national leaders, national press and some of the larger sporting franchises have even partnered with them to sponsor a dog. The men and women that this organization provides services for have dedicated their lives to serving our great country, and Paws of War strives to help them in every way possible!

The fifth-graders of Pulaski Road Elementary School in the Northport East-Northport Union Free School District were recently challenged to the ultimate face-off by News 12 Anchor Kevin Maher — a paper football tournament.

Each year, Kevin challenges a different school to provide a paper football champion for him to challenge. After the fifth-graders faced off with each other, a champion emerged: Carmine Montanino.

Kevin talked a big game, posting a Facebook video where he smack-talked the fifth-graders the week before the tournament.

The students of Pulaski sent a rebuttal, claiming that they would be the victors — and, in the utmost mature manner possible, indicated that they ruled and Kevin drooled.

On the day of the tournament, students came to school decked out in Northport gear and pumped with energy.

Forming a tunnel for the two opponents to run through, Carmine’s peers cheered wildly for him as he approached the football table, followed by the Northport Tiger — but Kevin wasn’t as popular with the crowd.

Though the competition was fierce, and the game was close, Carmine came out victorious, scoring a whopping 41 points to Kevin’s 31. The crowd went wild for their classmate, and Kevin sulked in defeat.
