Research jewelry production. Gold mining can be destructive and cause environmental blight. Aim to purchase from retailers that limit mining waste and environmental damage.

Another idea is to recycle old gold jewelry into new items. Jewelry stores can melt down precious metals and turn them into entirely new and beautiful pieces.

Winter’s Wrath By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you?

As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it.

This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the

“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process.

Easier said than done.

After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular.

And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway.

Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I

desperately need a larger shovel, and #2 – I need to move to a warmer climate.

Immediately.

I realize that one major snowstorm through the first six weeks of winter qualifies as fairly fortunate. But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day?

Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above.

In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

Suffolk County Community College Women’s Basketball Head Coach and Athletic Director Kevin Foley, of Blue Point, earned his 400th career win last week when Suffolk defeated Hostos Community College 86-30.

Foley is completing his 23nd year at the helm of Suffolk’s Women’s team that has advanced to the playoffs in 20 consecutive years. Foley’s 400th win with Suffolk’s Sharks complements an overall 400-125 record, including playing in 14 semi-finals, winning six regional championships, and a national title.

Additionally, Foley’s teams have won one national and 11 regional sportsmanship awards and more than 41 of his former players have continued their intercollegiate athletic careers at fouryear Division II and

Foley was inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 in honor of his outstanding basketball career.

Foley, in addition to coaching, is a full professor of Health and Human Services at Suffolk County Community College and is currently the Director of Athletics for the second time in his career.

Millard Filmore was the 13th President of the United States, assuming the nation’s highest office when President Zachary Taylor died in office after serving a little more than a year as president.

Fillmore, a Whig lawyer from western New York who served as Taylor’s Vice President, was the last American president who was not affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties. An early member of the Whig party, in 1851, Fillmore became the only president in American history to appoint a Whig Supreme Court Justice after his recess appointment of Benjamin Robbins Curtis was confirmed by the United States Senate in December of that year.

Fillmore rose to occupy the White House after a humble upbringing in the Finger Lakes region of New York. At 15, the future president was apprenticed to a cloth dresser but was admitted to the bar in 1823 and soon became a successful lawyer in

Buffalo.

Fillmore soon ventured into politics as well, using his Whig connections to run for the House of Representatives, where he served for eight years.

By 1848, Fillmore was realizing even more ambitious pursuits, as he was elected to serve as Taylor’s Vice President.

He would not serve long in that role, as an illness that befell President Taylor on July 4, 1850, would claim his life just five days later. That thrust Fillmore into the presidency and right into the heart of heated debate surrounding the Compromise of 1850, a package of bills that aimed to defuse tensions and confrontations between the slave states of the south and the free states of the north.

Fillmore would ultimately sign all five bills in the Compromise of 1850 into law, but it was his support for the Fugitive Slave Act, a controversial element of the compromise that required all escaped slaves,

upon capture, be returned to their masters and that officials and citizens in free states had to cooperate with the law. Signing and enforcing the act would come back to haunt Fillmore in 1852, when he decided to run for a full term as President. The Whig Party, still upset that Fillmore supported the act, chose not to nominate Fillmore. That decision effectively ended Fillmore’s political career, though he

did make a memorable run as a third party candidate in the election of 1856. In that election, Fillmore was the presidential nominee of the American Party, winning 21 percent of the vote, which was one of the best showings a third-party presidential candidate ever produced.

Millard Fillmore passed away on March 8th, 1874, from complications of a stroke.

Billions of greeting cards are sold and exchanged each year, and Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year to give a loved one a greeting card.

The Greeting Card Association says 145 million Valentine’s Day units are sold in the United States each year.

The association says seven out of 10 surveyed card buyers consider greeting cards to be essential to them, and are passing on the greeting card tradition to younger generations.

Though the tradition of exchanging greeting cards is still going strong, few may know the history and etiquette behind this time-tested tradition.

Greeting Card History The tradition of exchanging greeting cards can be traced back to ancient China, where people exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New

Year. Over time, greeting cards were exchanged for various reasons, and by the 1850s greeting cards were transformed from handmade, expensive purchases to relatively affordable means of personal communication and well-wishing.

Valentine’s Day greetings have been popular since the Middle Ages, when they were sung or spoken aloud to special people. Cards were popularized in the 1400s, and the oldest known Valentine created during this era is on display in the British Museum in London. Valentines were initially made by hand, but by the end of the 1800s, the process of making cards was handled by machinery. Esther Howland, an American printer and artist, was one of the first to publish and sell valentines in the United States. Yet it took a few more years for a card

Keeping Cards Although there are no rules governing just how long to keep and display a card, most people keep them for five to seven days. Some special occasion cards, such as milestone birthdays or religious rites of passage, may warrant holding on to the card for posterity.

However, the length of time cards are kept is entirely at the discretion of the recipient.

Etiquette Sending cards requires a little know-how. Start out with a high-quality card to show that you value the recipient. If you’re taking the time to send a greeting card, make sure it looks like you put some effort into its selection.

Be sure your card list is continually updated with new addresses and contact information. If you do so regularly, it’s easier to send cards when the time comes.

Ensure greeting cards will arrive on time by mailing them out a week or two before the special day. Few things are worse than a card arriving late and seeming like an afterthought.

Address cards by hand and sign them personally.

Although desktop printers can make fast work of card mailings, writing things out by hand is a special touch that indicates you care.

Personal greeting cards for close friends and family members may also deserve an extra special touch, like including a custom message or a photograph.

Greeting cards are about expressing sentiments to special people in your life. They’re popular on Valentine’s Day and all year long to commemorate holidays and special occasions.

Officer Of The Year

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce that one of its finest was named Officer of the Year and awarded The Howard C. Stock Memorial Award at the 45th Annual Police Awards sponsored by the Southampton Town Kiwanis Club. Correction Officer Monique McCray received the top award during a ceremony held at the Atlantis Banquet Hall in Riverhead on Friday, January 23rd. Each year, fifteen East End police organizations compete for the coveted distinction, and also gather to pay tribute to exceptional officers from each agency.

Officer McCray, a ten year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, was selected Police Officer of the Year for her dedication to improving outcomes for incarcerated youth.

She was instrumental in developing Sheriff Vincent DeMarco’s Incarcerated Youth

Initiative and has made it her mission to provide guidance, mentoring and hope to justice involved teens under her care at the Riverhead Correctional Facility.

Officer McCray is also a leader in her community of Central Islip where she is a board member of the Youth Empowerment Project and a founding member of Building Bridges Uniting Communities.

In addition to The Howard C. Stock Memorial Award, Officer McCray was presented with the Correction Officer of the Year Award along with Deputy Sheriff Michael Kern, who was named Deputy Sheriff of the Year during the ceremony.

Officer Kern is a Drug Recognition Expert with the Sheriff’s Office and an instructor for the New York State Drug Recognition Training Program. He has taught hundreds of

officers throughout New York State in advanced policing techniques and his enforcement efforts have resulted in countless DWI and DUI arrests in Suffolk County.

Deputy Sheriff Kern is a ten-year veteran of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, and also served as a New York City Police Officer for seven years.

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco could not be more proud of the work of Officers McCray and Kern, and stated, “Suffolk County residents are fortunate to have two of the finest public servants working on their behalf as members of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. Boy Scout Event The Boy Scouts of America Suffolk County Council’s Trailblazer District will be holding an exciting event open to the public hosted by our very own Scout units (Packs, Troops, and Crews) on Saturday, March 7th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Sun-Vet Mall in Holbrook.

The event will celebrate the spirit of Scouting which continues to thrive in Suffolk County.

The Trailblazer Mall Show will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. with an opening parade showcasing each units flags and banners.

Planned activities include a district-wide Pinewood Derby runoff, booths by the district’s units with

awards for creativity of the activity, adherence to the theme, and proper identification of the unit, chartered organization, and hometown. People are requested to bring non-perishable food items which will be donated to a local food pantry.

Participants will include the Town of Brookhaven Recycling team, the Protestant Scouting Committee, Jewish Scouting Committee, members of the Holtsville Ecology Center, and Electronic Waste Recycling Inc. who will conduct an on-site e-waste collection.

People are invited to bring unwanted computers and other

electronics to be properly disposed of at the event.

Additional participants will be Scouter’s Reserve showcasing Scouting memorabilia, a local robotics team, and a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser will be held.

Serving nearly 26,000 young people between 7 and 21 years of age, the Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council is the foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. The Trailblazer District, one of four Scouting districts serving Suffolk County, serves the communities on the South Shore from Connetquot to Montauk.

Boy Scout Troop 34, Huntington Station, attended the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, MD – National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) Jamboree event on Saturday, January 17th.

This annual national event is hosted by the Naval Academy Midshipmen. The Scouts earned two merit badges in either: Aviation, Robotics,

Ensembles Perform Members of Harborfields High School Marching Band & Kickline and Vocal Ensemble became stars of their own Disney show on January 16th when they entertained resort guests at the Magic Kingdom Park and Waterside Stage at Downtown Disney.

The groups traveled from Greenlawn to the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to take part in the Disney Performing Arts Program.

The marching band, under the direction of Allison Scilla, Michelle DaSilva, Dan Bilawsky, and Joe Hinton, entertained

hundreds of Magic Kingdom Park guests as they marched onto Main Street, U.S.A., around Cinderella Castle and through Frontierland before the “Main Street Electrical Parade”.

The ensemble, under the direction of Clare Jackson, put on an exceptional performance that entertained hundreds of Downtown Disney guests.

This was the group’s third visit to the resort with the Disney Performing Arts Program.

Vocal, instrumental and dance ensembles from all around the world apply

to perform each year as a part of Disney Performing Arts at both the Disneyland Resort and the Walt Disney World Resort.

Once selected, they are given the opportunity to perform at the resort for an international audience of theme park guests.

Bee-utiful Spelling Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District is proud to announce that sixth-grade student Bella Sember won first place in the school’s annual Spelling Bee. Thirty-two sixth, seventh and eight-grade students participated in the spelling bee, all competing for the

first place title and chance to represent their school at the regional competition.

After ten competitive rounds, Sember claimed the first place title for correctly spelling “mercurial,” while seventh-grade student Christian Melhado was the runner-up.

As the winner, Sember received a free one-year membership to Britannica Online for Kids and will move on to represent her school in the Scripps National Spelling Program Regional Contest at Hofstra University on Sunday, February 8th.

Edison At Work Presented by Theatreworks USA, students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District attended a special interactive assembly to learn about the life and great inventions of Thomas Alva Edison.

Led by professional actor

Patrick Graner, students were navigated through Edison’s early years and most distinguished inventions. With a team of three student audience members, Graner recreated pivotal moments in Edison’s creative process.

Modeled after Edison’s life and work, Garner

highlighted four lessons children can use and implement in their own lives. The four key values include hard work, learning from mistakes, viewing problems from a different angle and choosing a job you passionately enjoy.

Parent University

In an effort to provide parents with the knowledge and tools to academically support their children at home, the Elwood Union Free School District hosted Elwood Parent University on January 15th for parents who have children in Harley Avenue Primary School and James H. Boyd Intermediate School.

Led by teacher volunteers and administration,

parents took on the role of students and attended two 30-minute sessions.

During this time, parents engaged in authentic lessons in literature, mathematics, writing and digital technology and asked questions along the way. Focused on a “love for reading” concept, Parent University also offered parents numerous strategies on ways to

support their child’s reading.

“The goal of Parent University is to educate parents about what their children are learning in the classroom so they are better prepared to help their children when they get home,” said Elwood’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, Dr. Gary Furman.

with a degree in Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Management, he is the “go-to” contact person for all youth interested in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Scouts in the Matinecock District community. Says District Executive Dan Schilpp, “I am a firm believer in the Scouting program, and am determined to help it grow.

If I can assist any of you in any way to help achieve this, please do not hesitate to ask; for at times I will ask for your help. Together we can continue the journey and help Scouting in our district become something even greater than it already is.”
