ngagement rings are often sizable investments.

Money magazine reports the average engagement ring costs around $5,800. An engagement ring symbolizes the start of a lifelong commitment and may even set the tone for a couple’s wedding day.

Jewelry styles are personal, and groomsto-be should carefully research their significant others’ preferences in terms of precious metals, colors and gemstones.

Even though tradition holds that a diamond gemstone is classic for engagement rings, these precious stones are not the only options. In fact, before World War II, just 10 percent of proposals involved diamond engagement rings.

The moment that many of NorthportEast Northport student athletes have been waiting for has arrived with the return of low-risk winter sports. Beginning Jan. 7, Northport High School boys and girls track and bowling teams, as well as boys swimming, began practicing for their shortened season.

The boy’s swim team kicked off with some conditioning on the field before returning to the local YMCA to get in the water, while track teams also began warming up and making their way around the track.

The bowling season officially kicked off on Jan. 11 at Larkfield Lanes, with excited bowling team participants getting back into the rhythm of competing. The bowling alley, complete with plastic barriers between each lane, had various measures in place to keep students safe.

Despite the cold weather and unique circumstances, students appeared excited for the beginning of the season.

Northport Girls Track team captain Grace Wertheimer shared “I’m excited that we got back at all. Running alone is hard because there is not as much motivation, so being around other people is definitely a positive for me.”

“Seeing how excited the students were to return to their sports made all of the additional planning worth it” shared Mark Dantuono, director of physical education, health and athletics for the district. “It brought back a sense of normalcy to see them competing and enjoying themselves, and we can’t wait for all of our athletes to do the same.”

year, but some months have traditionally proven more popular times of year for happy couples to tie the knot.

Summer was long known as the most popular season for weddings, but that trend has shifted in recent years. According to the 2020 WeddingWire Newlywed Report, 36 percent of couples get married in the fall, making autumn the most popular time to say “I do.”

Though October and September are the two most popular months to marry, budget-conscious couples may want to consider getting married in winter. December, January and February are the least popular wedding months, but the experts at WeddingWire note that getting married during the slow season has its benefits.

Vendors, including wedding planners and venues, may offer their services and facilities at discounted prices in

winter to account for the slow season. And guests might be thankful to have a fun event to look forward to during a time of year when social schedules tend to be less busy.

Many wedding components will stay the same regardless of when couples walk down the aisle. However, couples may need to take a few things into consideration as they begin planning winter weddings.

• Avoid holiday weekends. Just because social schedules are not always so busy in winter that doesn’t mean couples can pick any winter weekend to tie the knot. The holiday season, which begins on Thanksgiving weekend in late November and lasts until New Year’s Day, is a hectic time of year for many people.

Avoid holiday weekends like Thanksgiving and the weekends before or after Christmas and New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day. These weekends already are busy travel times, so couples might

not be able to get guestfriendly rates on hotel rooms, and some guests may already have plans to visit family. In addition to the December holidays, avoid the first weekend in February. That’s Super Bowl weekend, and many people may be reluctant to travel on the day of the big game.

• Research local weather.

It’s impossible to predict the weather, but savvy couples can research local weather in the town or city where they’re getting married to determine when is the most travel-friendly month to host their weddings. Some regions get heavy snowfall in January, while others may be more susceptible to late winter snowstorms.

Couples with a lot of out-of-town guests should choose a winter weekend where snowfall is unlikely so guests don’t have to endure travel delays on their way to and from the wedding.

• Purchase wedding insurance.

Wedding insurance is a wise investment for every couple, but it can be especially valuable for couples tying the knot in winter. Each policy is different, but wedding insurance policies should protect couples’ investments if storms force local officials to declare a state of emergency that prohibits travel. Make sure the policy covers both cancellations and postponements.

Winter weddings can help couples save money.

Planning such affairs may require paying attention to details that would not garner much consideration during other times of year.

2021 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar Congratulations to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior Rithika Narayan who has been selected as a 2021 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar, with her project titled “Machine Learning on CrowdSourced Data to Highlight Coral Disease.” Rithika is among 300 high school seniors who were selected as scholars from 1,760 applications.

The Regeneron Science Talent Search provides students with an opportunity to present their research on a national stage while celebrating the hard work of young scientists.

Rithika researched how machine learning, which focuses on the development of computer programs and artificial intelligence, can be used to address environmental concerns. In this case she modified the Facebook algorithm, Mask R-CNN, to detect the presence of different coral diseases.

Her dedication to the project, which she began researching in summer 2019, has since earned her several noteworthy accolades. She recently won first place in Environmental Science in the 2020 Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, was named a 2020 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair finalist as well as a

national delegate to the Junior Science Humanities Symposia Program. Her project has also been recognized by the Journal of Emerging Investigators.

Rithika hopes that her research, which she is currently expanding upon to recognize other infectious diseases, can lead to industry advancements with the help of institutions like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

According to Regeneron Science Talent Search, “Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists, and hail from 198 American and international high schools in 37 states, Puerto Rico, Chinese Taipei, and Singapore.”

Forty of the 300 scholars will be chosen as finalists later this month. Finalists will then compete for more than $1.8 million in awards from Regeneron.

In addition, Rithika was also recently announced as the John H. Glenn High School Class of 2021 valedictorian. For the past three summers, she has also interned at several biochemical companies, including Angion Biomedica Corp in Uniondale, as part of the Independent Science Research program.

Elwood PTSA Creates First “Winter Wonderland Walk-Through” Members of the Elwood community enjoyed holiday classics performed by talented John H. Glenn High School musicians at the Parent Teacher Student Association’s outdoor holiday event on Dec. 14.

In lieu of the PTSA’s annual “Children’s Holiday Breakfast,” its members teamed up with the Student Council, John Glenn Music Department and Community Service club to create an outdoor “Winter Wonderland WalkThrough.”

ensembles convened outside of the high school’s gymnasium, bringing with them cheer and music to kick off the holiday season.

Students from James H. Boyd Intermediate and Harley Avenue Primary Schools enjoyed walking the tree-lined path between the high school’s tennis courts, admiring the wintry decorations.

Families were welcomed by volunteers dressed as elves and Frosty the Snowman and were invited to take holiday pictures in front of a green screen seasonal background.

Similarly to previous years, students were gifted holiday crafts to take home and, upon leaving the event, received individually prepackaged goodie bags containing hot chocolate, candy canes and more chocolate.

“It’s a give back,” John Glenn High School PTSA President Agapi Bell said of the event. “What I liked best about it was that the older students got an opportunity to see the younger kids and the younger kids got to see the older kids volunteer and create the magic.”

distancing” prior to 2020. That changed as the novel coronavirus COVID-19 spread rapidly across the globe and the world found itself in the midst of a deadly pandemic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines social distancing as keeping a safe distance of at least six feet between yourself and other people who are not from your household.

Public health officials continue to champion social distancing while acknowledging the fatigue that many people have experienced as the pandemic stretched on for months. Though much of the world hit the proverbial pause button, life went on during the pandemic.

Perhaps nowhere was that more evident than at the altar, where many couples still tied the knot, albeit in scaled back ceremonies that adhered to social distancing guidelines in their communities.

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo.

They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need.

Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island.

Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.”

The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street.

The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you.

All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them.

Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables.

Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and

Precautions That Can Keep Wedding Guests Safe During The Pandemic

he outbreak of the novel coronavirus that began in the winter of 2019-20 and was ultimately declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization put many couples’wedding plans in peril. In an effort to stop the spread of the virus and protect those most vulnerable to it, governments across the globe placed restrictions on social gatherings, including weddings.

Those restrictions prompted some couples to postpone their nuptials until 2021, while others tied the knot at considerably smaller ceremonies than they initially planned for.

Couples planning to tie the knot in the months ahead can still do so, but the WHO recommends they take certain precautions as they organize their ceremonies and receptions. local • Confirm regulations. Restrictions related to COVID-19 differ greatly by region.

Areas that were not hit hard by the virus may not have as many restrictions in place as those that were devastated by the outbreak. In addition, cities or regions whose responses to the virus have been successful may have relaxed restrictions more than areas that are still struggling.

The WHO notes the importance of checking local guidelines prior to planning an event, and that’s especially important for couples who hope to get married in towns or cities where they do not currently reside.

• Keep guests up to date about precautions.

Include detailed information about the safety measures that will be implemented during the wedding on your wedding website. Insert a card detailing this information into your invitation envelopes as well so all guests know what to expect when they accept the invitation.

In addition, remind guests of the safety

precautions throughout the ceremony.

• Provide sanitary supplies. Make sure hand sanitizer, soap, water, and masks are readily available for all guests.

Social distance markers also can be placed on the ground throughout the venue to make it easy for guests to stay six feet apart from one another.

• Choose an outdoor venue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the COVID-19 virus spreads very easily through person-to-person contact and that the risk of spreading the virus is greater when spending time indoors. Couples can mitigate some of that risk by tying the knot outdoors and then hosting an outdoor reception where tables are kept at least six feet apart.

Weddings will be different until the world puts COVID-19 in its rearview mirror. In the meantime, it’s up to happy couples to keep their guests safe come the big day.

Schools Roll Out New Science Curriculum Rooted In Storytelling Northport-East Northport elementary schools are preparing to roll out an updated NYSSLS science unit curriculum to third graders districtwide.

The new unit called “What Happened to the Dinosaurs?” is a life science unit about interdependent relationships in ecosystems that students will be learning this spring.

The district’s elementary science curriculum writing team has been working on developing the unit lesson plan and emphasized that it is rooted in storytelling.

Katie Moy, one of the

first teachers to pilot the program at Ocean Avenue this week, shared that storytelling means “every lesson comes back to our central theme,” which ultimately helps students understand the “why” behind their problem solving. Students in the Technology and Engineering Department at the high school created a life size 3D dinosaur to launch the program and help further inspire the third graders.

During the first lesson of the pilot, students learned about the process

of digging for dinosaur bones and used miniature sand boxes to replicate the process. Throughout the next few weeks, students will continue on with this dinosaur theme, learning about their ecosystems, anatomy, ecology and more. District Chairperson of Science, Technology and Engineering David Storch shared that these lesson plans are based on “three dimensions: science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas, and cross cutting concepts.”
