Few events in the last decade of space exploration have captured the world’s imagination like NASA’s ongoing Mars Exploration Program.

In 2004, the successful deployment of the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity launched a new era of scientific investigation of our nearest neighbor.

On Tuesday, February 6th at 7 p.m., the Cradle is proud to present an evening with NASA engineer, Kobie Boykins.

For Boykins, a mechanical engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Rover’s success was also a personal triumph: he helped design and build the solar arrays that enabled the Rovers to keep going long after their planned 90-day life.

Boykins is also intimately involved with the latest venture to Mars, as supervisor of the mobility and remote sensing mast teams for the Mars Science Laboratory, better known as Curiosity. Curiosity landed on Mars and has made headlines with evidence that conditions on Mars, including the presence of water, once could have supported life. For work on this and other compelling projects, Bokins received a NASA Exceptional Service Medal, one of the highest honors given to NASA employees and contractors.

Boykins’ boundless enthusiasm for unraveling the mysteries of outer space, and Mars in particular, is infectious.

Join in for an engaging evening exploring the Red Planet with an update on the very latest chapter in the ongoing story of Mars exploration. The event is part of the Cradle’s multi-year program, “Countdown to Apollo at 50” that celebrates the Apollo program and looks

First-graders at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District greeted a special guest on January 16th - meteorologist Geoff Bansen from FiOS1 Long Island.

Students in Mr. Coppola, Mrs. Lemieux and Mrs. O’Connor’s first-grade classes recently learned about matter, and Mr. Bansen’s visit came at the perfect time — during their study of solids, liquids and gasses. Bansen shared his knowledge of the water cycle and explained the special tools he uses as a weatherman to predict the weather.

Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County.

“Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.”

The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.”

As he rolled his overflowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged.

“It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”

The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel.

I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

ahead of the game.

I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks.

I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a flight of stairs into my apartment.

I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands.

Preferably without an armful of glass bottles and pork chops to contend with as well. Just when food shopping was beginning to become routine…

mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone.

If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so.

They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats.

As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events.

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor.

Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.

LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. ouples planning their weddings routinely rely on professional transportation to bring them to and from the ceremony and reception.

According to The Knot Real Weddings Study 2016, roughly half of all engaged couples will hire a transportation service such as a limousine or party bus for their weddings.

Resident Reminder Huntington Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci is reminding residents who do not have listed landline phones or who prefer to receive notifications on their cell phone to sign up for the Town’s Huntington Alert system by visiting the Town’s website.

The Town uses the system, part of the Code RED network, to pass on important information when bad weather strikes or during other emergencies.

The Code RED database includes more than 70,000 Huntington telephone numbers in its database, obtained from various

public records. But Code RED’s database does not automatically include unlisted numbers. Those persons, as well as persons who no longer have landline phones or who prefer to receive the calls on their cell phones, need to sign up for the telephone notifications by going to the Town’s website, www. huntingtonny.gov. Look for the “Huntington Alert” button on the bottom of the home page, click on the words “Sign Up Here,” and follow the instructions.

“We want to make sure that all residents receive important information

during weather and other emergencies and that our call list is as up to date as possible,” Supervisor Lupinacci said. “If you do not have a listed phone, please sign up so we can reach you when the circumstances require that we do. We want everybody to be safe and to be fully informed.”

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly recently joined members, families and friends of the Huntington Manor Fire Department to recognize Captain Lou Agiesta for a remarkable 50 years of volunteer service.

In a ceremony held at the Huntington Manor Fire Department headquarters in Huntington Station on Monday, Jan. 15th, Donnelly CELEBRATING A MILESTONE - Pictured: Huntington Supervisor Chad A. Legislator presented Captain Agiesta, Lupinacci, Diane Ayars, Dr. Lester Ayars and Assemblyman Andrew Raia. a Huntington Station resident, with a County Proclamation highlighting his outstanding record and accomplishments.

A tireless volunteer, Captain Agiesta joined the Huntington Manor Fire Department in January

1968 and worked his way up the ranks to hold a multitude of leadership positions, including: 1st Lieutenant Hose Company #1 (1979-1981); 1st Captain Hose Company #1 (1981-1983); 3rd Assistant Chief (1984-1985); 2nd Assistant Chief (19861987); 1st Assistant Chief (1988-1989) and Chief of Department (1990-1991).

He also served as President of the TOHCC (1990-1991) and was a member of the Town Fire Advisory Board (1990-1991). In addition, Captain Agiesta served as Fire Police Lieutenant (2008-2009), Fire Police Captain (2010-2011) and as co-chairman of the Kids Christmas party and an

advisor to the Huntington Manor Juniors.

“For more than half a century, Captain Agiesta has continuously displayed remarkable bravery and a commitment to the community that is beyond compare,” said Legislator Donnelly. “As a retired member of the FDNY and a current volunteer firefighter myself, I know first-hand that is a testament to both his dedication to our community and the support of his family. It was an honor to recognize and thank him for his many years of exceptional service.”

Huntington Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci and Assemblyman Andrew Raia joined with the congregation at the Island Christian Church January 14th in marking the 50th anniversary of the church’s affiliation with its pastor emeritus, Dr. Lester Ayars, and his wife, Diane.

During his tenure as the church’s senior pastor from 1968 to 2015, Dr. Ayars presided over its growth from the single campus Northport Baptist Church to its current three locations, on Elwood Road in East Northport and in Holbrook and Port Jefferson. Shortly after the opening of the third campus in 2011, the

church changed its name to better reflect its multilocation status.

The foundations of the church include uplifting music, relevant teaching, authentic relationships, heartfelt prayer and compassionate provision for the needy. The church works both directly with individuals and with organizations such as the Helping Hands Rescue Mission and Long Island Head Start. The church also works with a local homeless shelter.

Since taking emeritus status three years ago, Dr. Ayars has continued to mentor, teach and preach.

Diane Ayars has continued her ministry in counseling.

At the January 14th church services, Supervisor Lupinacci and Assemblyman Raia presented Dr. and Mrs. Ayars with proclamations highlighting their accomplishments and congratulating them for reaching the milestone.

“Dr. and Mrs. Ayars have been instrumental in creating a religious institution that helps define the fabric of our community – of people helping people. I congratulate them for all they have done in the past and hopefully will continue to do for many years to come.”

Smyth attended the 13th annual Buddy Skate at the Town’s Dix Hills Ice Rink January 14th, commending the Long Island Rebels Youth Hockey Club for an event that pairs club participants with special

needs students in a night of skating.

More than 100 students, siblings and families from the Genesis School for Autistic Children attended the event, which is part of the Rebels’ mission to promote quality and safe hockey instruction, sportsmanship, love of the game and community service.

The event, which is organized by the Rebels’ Rich Righi and John Zerillo, is held with the support of the Dix Hills Hawks and the Long Island Lady Islanders. Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland, who as a Town councilwoman was a regular at the event, also attended.

Remembering the Dream In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District attended an assembly in his honor on January 12th. Student council co-presidents Brayden Klement and Ellie Mitola acted as masters of ceremony, introducing each tribute to Dr. King to the audience made up of peers, family members and administrators.

After a brief video presentation on the impact of Dr. King’s life and mission, students from Ms. Chiarello’s class each shared a piece of Dr. King’s biography, with bits of information such as his birthday, his

involvement in the Civil Rights Movement, his pledge to nonviolence, and more. The fifth-graders from Ms. McLeod’s and Ms. Reilly’s classes presented an anonymously penned poem about Dr. King, each reading a sentence.

Students in Ms. Micchiche and Ms. Musto’s class read excerpts from Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream Speech” with passion.

In addition, select students from the third through fifth grade chorus sang two songs, “Martin Luther King” and “We Shall Overcome,” led by music teacher Linda Romano and math teacher Linda Scotto.

Elwood Middle School student Matthew Charlotin, who was invited to the assembly to read an essay on Dr. King that he wrote.

“When I think of think of Martin Luther King Jr., I think of strength, passion, perseverance and an intellectual man who didn’t believe in violence - who used his inspired words to change the lives of everyone…and he was no ordinary man,” Charlotin said.

To conclude the ceremony, Dr. Toscano read a poem she wrote about her own dream - the dream of all humans being kind to one another.

Islandwide Essay Contest Megan Heffernan, a third-grader from Fifth Avenue Elementary School in the Northport-East Northport School District, won TD Bank’s “Take a Duck to Class” essay contest this month.

For this contest, the essay prompt asked “Who is a hero in your community, and why?” Students were required to answer in 250 words or less, and submit their essay online. Megan’s winning entry, chosen from a pool of thousands of essays, was one of four island-wide. The essay focused on her father — the Chief of the East Northport Fire Department, a police

officer and an Army veteran. On Jan. 12, the Long Island Ducks and TD Bank representatives visited Megan and her peers at school, and held a special assembly to honor both Megan and her father. Megan was given an opportunity to read her essay in front of her classmates and family members.

“He helps so many people in so many ways,” Megan read aloud. “He is generous, kind, brave… and has a huge heart.”

Afterwards, TD Bank representatives presented Megan with a $50 Visa gift card to congratulate

her for her winning essay — and the Ducks’ mascot QuackerJack made a special appearance to the delight of all the children.

Megan and her classmates then had their own special session with the mascot, where they were given bags filled with items courtesy of TD Bank and the Long Island Ducks, and had the opportunity to have those items autographed. The students concluded the visit dancing with QuackerJack to the “YMCA”, which is a tradition at Long Island Ducks games.

Sheriff Sworn In

Errol D. Toulon, Jr., Ed.D. was sworn-in as the 67th Sheriff of Suffolk County at a ceremony on January 12th, 2018 at the Van Nostrand Theater at Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) in Brentwood.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo presided over the Oath of Office in front of hundreds of cheering family members, friends and supporters - among them, the Sheriff’s parents, Errol, Sr. and his mother, Alma. The Sheriff’s wife, Christina Toulon, held the family bible.

More than forty dignitaries joined the Sheriff on the dais, including Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, who gave welcoming remarks. A large contingent of law enforcement officials from New York City, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the Suffolk County Police Department and other agencies were also represented on the stage, along with SCCC

President Shaun McKay, members of the clergy and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Farmingville, Chapter 11. The Reverend Charles A. Coverdale of the First Baptist Church in Riverhead gave the closing remarks. Dan Gasby of East Hampton, New York was the Master of Ceremonies.

Sheriff Toulon addressed the crowd during an inaugural speech in which he pledged to devote considerable resources to upgrading technology, equipment and training for staff. He also emphasized his goal to enhance “multiagency informationsharing and intelligence gathering” directed at ridding the county of gang violence and the drug epidemic. He outlined a comprehensive list of priorities, some of which he has already initiated since taking over the post on January 1st, including: · A collaboration with one of the county’s largest health providers to address the growing number of

addicts cycling in and out of the county correctional facility · Strengthening discharge planning for those who are 60 days from re-entering our communities · The creation of a Task Force to find ways to prevent people with chronic mental illness from cycling in and out of the jail by connecting them to case management services prior to their release · Working with citizens, local agencies, and state and federal partners to improve public safety · A program to help the business community better protect themselves, their businesses, and their employees from robberies fueled by the escalating opioid epidemic He concluded the speech with the promise, “I am ready to work. I am ready to lead.”
