Kicking Into High Gear By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Has anyone else found that the more you have to accomplish in a given period of time, the more efficiently you tend to work? Tasked with a To Do list a mile long, one that would seem insurmountable at first glance, you suddenly kick into another gear entirely, mustering the kind of motivation not seen since the days of cramming for final exams and pulling all-nighters to finish term papers. The problem is complacency. Too easily do we settle into our routines, refusing to waver in our

preconceived notions of how our days should go; how much we are required to accomplish at a minimum, rather than how much we could achieve if only we exercised our full potential. Sad to say, “good enough” is exactly just that for most people – all that they are mentally capable of reaching for. But (and this is good news), see what happens when you take on a little more. Day by day, stretch yourself a bit too thin… and you will surely begin to see just how much time is wasted on a daily basis, and how much more we can accomplish if we only

rise to the occasion. The potential is there; we need only to unlock it. Think back to the days when achievement actually meant something, when everything was a means to an end in order to reach that next level. Why should that mentality change once we “grow up” and settle into adulthood? Why shouldn’t we continue to push the boundaries of excellency, to rise through the ranks and maximize every minute we can in Light Travels pursuit of perfection? Unlike other light, Everyone has a higher scatters, laser gear. There’s no better which time than now to tap into light travels in only one direction. the reserve.

Alumni Visit

Among The Best Twelve talented students from the Elwood Union Free School District have been selected to perform in the Long Island String Festival Association’s Honors String Ensembles in January and February. Selection to a LISFA ensemble is a highly competitive process, based on superior scores at the annual New York State School Music Association

solo festivals and school music instructor recommendations. The district is proud to recognize James H. Boyd Intermediate School fifth-graders Devin Lee (string bass) and Rithika Narayan (viola); Elwood Middle School students Elizabeth Choi (violin), Emma Mayette (violin), James Paik (cello) and Annie Song (cello); and

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School string players Kelsey Hackett (viola), Derek Lee (double bass), Tyler Song (violin), Lukas Shrout (viola), Rebecca St. Paul (violin) and Eun Sung Suh (violin). These students were selected to represent the district from among the very best of Suffolk County’s string players.

Students of Harborfields High School in grades nine through eleven recently had the opportunity to receive first-hand information about life at a military academy during a visit from graduates Katie White (Air Force Academy), Morgan Lange (U.S. Naval Academy) and Robert Zagaja (U.S. Merchant Marine Academy). The three members from the class of 2013 returned to the district to share their experiences with

students on a myriad of topics. For approximately two and a half hours, students discussed the application process, boot camp, academics, daily life and social life at school as well as post academy commitments and opportunities. Audience members asked a number of questions regarding academic difficulty, the physical demands, use of free time and post-academy obligations. “This was a wonderful

opportunity for students interested in possibly pursuing an education at one of the military academies to gain a better understanding of what that commitment would entail,” remarked Director of Guidance Vincent Pisano. “It helps that they are receiving the information from their peers, rather than a representative from the school. It creates an environment in which they could be comfortable exploring the topic.”

Advancing To Regionals

On January 8th, 31 Oldfield Middle School students in the Harborfields Central School District took part in the school level of the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. The students, representing grades six through eight, qualified to participate in the schoollevel bee after winning their class bees. Students took on

many complicated words with confidence. After nine rounds, only three contestants remained – seventh-grader Eric Cadalzo and sixthgraders Thomas Burney and Christian Melhado. Christian emerged as the winner in round 12 by correctly spelling “bonsai.” As this year’s winner, Christian will be able to compete in the Hofstra

Long Island Regional Spelling Bee on February 9th. He also receives a free one-year membership to Britannica Online for Kids. When asked how he felt, Christian said with excitement, “When I heard that I was up against eighth-graders, I thought I had no chance, but when it got down to the final few, I thought I might just have a chance!”

The Bond Of Brotherly Lover

I will never understand why the bond between brothers is so strong. My little brother and I are best friends. We are study partners. We are co-workers. We are teammates for flagfootball. I am his mentor, and he is my inspiration. For fifteen years, my brother has had an unparalleled influence on my life, and I on his. We are cast from the same mold, and nothing could ever come between us. Some call us inseparable, but I just call us family. ADVANCING TO REGIONALS - Oldfield Middle School students in the My little brother is the Harborfields Central School District took part in the school level of the annual Scripps reason why I strive for National Spelling Bee. Pictured are the final three contestants, Eric Cadalzo (second place), Thomas Burney (third place) and Christian Melhado (first place), with English language arts teachers Laura Hurney and Kerri Brierton.

greatness. I want to set a positive example for him. I want him to strive for greatness. My brother is always there when I need him, and knows just how to cheer me up after a rough day. Similarly, whenever my brother needs help, he knows just who to call. I will always have his back, just like he will always have mine. There has never, and will never, be a time where I put another person before my little brother. Since we were babies, our parents have been instilling in

us the idea that we are the world’s greatest tag-team. If we work together, there are few forces that can overcome us. Our relationship is stronger than any other that I have ever witnessed. I will never understand why we finish each other’s sentences or why we cannot go a day without seeing each other. I will never know why he acts the way he acts, or why I do. I will never understand how two separate beings can be so close. I know we are brothers, and that is all that matters.

Off To A Great Start

Huntington High School students attended this year’s kickoff event for the 2014 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI). Hosted by Stony Brook University, they gathered with more than 40 participating high schools on Saturday, January 4th,

at Stony Brook University’s Jacob Javits Lecture Center for a presentation and simulcast broadcast from New Hampshire. After the presentation, each team received a kit of parts, which they will use along with other materials to build a 120-pound robot. The teams will have six weeks to construct the robot and prepare for the upcoming competition to be held on March 27th through 29th at Hofstra

University. Huntington is a rookie team, so this will be its first Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition. Members of the Huntington High School robotics team are pictured displaying the contents of the kit of parts. For more information about SBPLI and the annual FIRST Robotics Competition, visit http:// www.sbpli.org.

Friends By: Bob Sinclair A breathtaking summer sunrise enhanced the silhouette of two couples wandering along a winding path toward a serene and deserted beach. They were captivated by the ocean’s rising tide, as the cascade of rolling waves tenderly rearranged all the sand within their reach. Caressed and warmed by the brilliance of the early morning sun, and the magic of the moment, they steal a breath of time to scratch their names in the inviting, ever-shifting sand. Embracing the tranquility of their surroundings, each couple, moved by the power and timeless majesty of the sea, seems to reach out to one another as their fingers instinctively intertwine, making it difficult to distinguish one hand from the other hand.

“Sexy Rose” Photo by: Mike Missano, North Babylon

Returning at sunset, serenaded by the haunting sounds of the sea, only to discover the ocean had once again somewhat magically shifted the sand, washing away most letters and scrambling the rest into one word that expresses so much more. As the water escaped back into the arms of the sea, the message left behind touched them deeply and became a lasting part of their lives, creating a special bond that never ends. Each couple had scratched their names in the sand separately, and the ocean had mysteriously erased some letters and joined others, forever engraving just one word, whispered by a gentle breeze and echoed by the ocean...
