The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

“We do whatever it takes to make families comfortable.” Our neighbors know we always go the extra mile, providing options they can’t find elsewhere. We’re continually adding new, unique services and team members - like Kota! Kota is the first certified grief therapy dog in the area. He’s trained to detect human emotion and put people at ease. Research shows animals reduce anxiety and can aid in the grief process. Kota’s presence is one more way we make a difference for families.

The hallways of Washington Drive Primary School are usually full of student artwork and achievements, but there’s something new coming to the school and it’s kicking off an exciting new initiative. Thanks to the help of several talented and dedicated parent volunteers, a new mural is quickly taking shape that depicts 14 different books, chosen by our teachers, that will serve as a gateway for greater in-class discussions on topics such as empathy, compassion, kindness and diversity. Beginning in kindergarten, teachers will read at

least one book throughout the year to their class and design specific activities around the topics to help foster an understanding that “you are not alone,” Principal Kathryn McNally said. Additionally, the books will be added to the school library’s “Empathy Book Nook,” which is available to both students and teachers throughout the day. While the program will be piloted in several classes this year, the school’s administration anticipates that by next school year, all classes will be engaged. “Our goal is that by the time students leave Washington

Drive, they will be familiar with at least several, if not more, of the books and the lessons associated with each,” Principal McNally said. Those who have dedicated their time to this initiative include: Mariana Becker, Emilie D’Andrilli, Brooke Drew, Koren Harris, Diane Harvey, Laura Guadagno, Monique Webb McKelvey, Freda Manual, Thayer Behmke-Orelli, Janese Pfeiffer, Courtney and Jeremy Quinn, Lisa Rodriguez, Lisa Collet Rodriguez, Erin Scagliola, Laurie Schiraldi, Erica Tiso, Rebecca Waldren and Tracy Woods.

Huntington Hospital Announces THE SOCIAL 2019 Honorees

SUFFOLK ZONE 1 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JANUARY 15, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

HUNTINGTON, NY – The four owners of The Paramount in Huntington Village are this year’s honorees for “THE SOCIAL,” an event supporting Huntington Hospital and its future cancer center. Dominick Catoggio, Jim Condron, Brian Doyle and Stephen Ubertini breathed new life into the community by reinventing the space that once housed the original Huntington Theatre, which first opened its doors in 1927. With a dramatic transformation into a highly diversified venue for live concerts, comedy shows and special events, The Paramount also features the renowned Founders Room, The Studio and a brand new experiential art space Spotlight. The Paramount debuted in 2011 and hosts over 200 live events a year. Top artists and comedians who have graced The Paramount’s stage include: Billy Joel, Ed Sheeran, Rod Stewart, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Pitbull, Judas Priest, Steely Dan,

Train, Matchbox 20, Stone Temple Pilots, Melissa Etheridge, Kevin Hart and Sebastian Maniscalco, just to name a few. Mr. Catoggio is an award-winning designer and contractor. Mr. Condron is the regional senior vice president of Connoisseur Media, which includes WALK 97.5, KJOY 98.3, WHLI, 103.1 MAX FM and 94.3 The Shark. Mr. Doyle is a music industry executive who has managed artists including Hall & Oates, Mariah Carey, John Mellencamp, Carly Simon and Taylor Dane. Mr. Ubertini is the creative visionary, and an entrepreneur who owns other successful businesses including Matrix Polymers and 3 Water. “The Paramount has blossomed into a cultural center and economic engine for the Town of Huntington, a venue the community can be proud of,” said Nick Fitterman, MD, executive director of Huntington Hospital. “They have reinvented and improved the cultural

experience of downtown Huntington. I know that employees and patients alike excitedly look forward to attending performances at The Paramount. It’s a great experience thanks to these gentlemen, who brought world class entertainment to our doorstep. Their artistic vision and community spirit are among the reasons we are excited to honor them at this year’s gala.” This fundraising effort will benefit Huntington Hospital as part of Northwell Health’s $1 billion Outpacing the Impossible campaign, which supports capital projects, improves hospitals and clinical programs, advances research and funds endowment for teaching and research initiatives. For more information about the THE SOCIAL, including sponsorship opportunities, contact Dolli Bross at 631-470-5204 or dbross2@ northwell.edu. ### About Northwell Health Northwell Health is New

‘Science’ Behind Building Sandcastles Second graders at Washington Drive Primary School will soon explore how different elements, such as wind and water, effect and contribute to beach erosion. But before they do so, their teachers needed to do some learning of their own. That’s why on Dec. 12, Melinda O’Donoghue, Suzanne Chmura, Kim Lupton, Millie Rivera, Monique Golding and Deb Phillips participated in a “Science 21” professional training course, taught by Kathi Dinota of Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES. The program, which Harborfields implemented

against a sandcastle made of cornmeal and water. The following two lessons then call for the design and construction of structures to prevent their choice of either water or wind erosion. Their creation’s efficiency will then be tested and the students will be required to compare each of their classmates designs to understand why one was more successful than the others. Each of the tasks in the curriculum’s three units are designed to test the students’ understanding of physical science, earth and space science, life science and engineering.

in 2017 for its kindergartners and first graders, is an integrated K-6 science curriculum, “designed by teachers for teachers.” The curriculum, which is aligned with New York State’s Science Learning Standards, engages students in minds-on and hands-on science tasks relevant to everyday life. On Dec. 12, the teachers learned how to prepare and administer each of the 15 lessons included in the program’s second unit, which is designed to tackle Earth and space science. One such lesson had them using varying diameter tubes to blow air, simulating wind,

Advance Care Plans The United States population is rapidly aging. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), by 2030, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double to 71 million older Americans, comprising

roughly 20 percent of the U.S. population. With age comes the added burden of dealing with illnesses such as heart failure, dementia and cancer, any one of which can leave you unable to make decisions involving

your care. Unless you have a plan in place, the burden will fall on your family. Protect your loved ones from having to make life and death decisions on your behalf by developing an advance care plan today.
