The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility.

Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit.

The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville.

This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need.

These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more.

The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/ Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors.

The hallways of Washington Drive Primary School are usually full of student artwork and achievements, but there’s something new coming to the school and it’s kicking off an exciting new initiative.

Thanks to the help of several talented and dedicated parent volunteers, a new mural is quickly taking shape that depicts 14 different books, chosen by our teachers, that will serve as a gateway for greater in-class discussions on topics such as empathy, compassion, kindness and diversity.

Beginning in kindergarten, teachers will read at least one book throughout the year to their class and design specific activities around the topics to help foster an understanding that “you are not alone,” Principal Kathryn McNally said.

Additionally, the books will be added to the school library’s “Empathy Book Nook,” which is available to both students and teachers throughout the day.

While the program will be piloted in several classes this year, the school’s administration anticipates that by next school year, all classes will be engaged.

“Our goal is that by the time students leave Washington Drive, they will be familiar with at least several, if not more, of the books and the lessons associated with each,” Principal McNally said.

Huntington Opens Heckscher Park To Leashed Dogs

A pilot program allowing leashed dogs in Heckscher Park begins January 1, and Huntington Councilwoman Joan Cergol is working with the Long Island Dog Owners Group (LI-DOG) to spread the word about the common sense rules implemented to make the program a success.

Councilwoman Cergol and LI-DOG’s educational campaign includes: An explanatory video featuring Councilwoman Cergol and her boxer, Dempsey.

Detailed signage to be installed at all park entrances.

An at-a-glance card detailing to rules.

A dedicated cadre of LIDOG volunteers to serve as ambassadors in the park, handing out the card and answering questions from dog owners and persons without dogs.

Installation of dog waste bag dispensers at the park.

“The key to this program’s success is dog owners understanding what is allowed and respecting the rights of all people who

want to enjoy Huntington’s signature park, both with and without dogs. That’s the main thrust of our educational campaign,” Councilwoman Cergol said.

In October, the Town Board unanimously approved Councilwoman Cergol’s resolution establishing the three-month pilot program, with the expectation that if the first three months are successful, the pilot will be extended for another three months to allow for an assessment of its success during the different seasonal uses of the park.

The rules, as noted in both the signage and the information card, require dog owners to: Keep dogs on leash (maximum 6 feet) and under control. No retractable leashes.

Pick up and properly dispose of dog waste.

Yield to all other park goers on the paths by stepping off the path.

Keep dogs out of the playground, picnic areas, tennis courts and the ball field, when in use.

Avoid wildlife for their safety and their dog’s.

Keep dogs out of the plantings and the pond.

Have dogs licensed and vaccinated.

Have no more than two dogs per handler.

Respect other park goers so the park is a good experience for everyone.

Park-goers with safety concerns are advised to call the Town’s 24-hour Public

Safety number, 631-3513234.

“We want everyone to be able to enjoy the beauty and serenity of Heckscher Park and the rules established for this program should ensure that this remains the case,” said Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci. “Please let us know about your experience with the 90-day dog-walking pilot program, so that we can fully assess the success of this program at the end of March.”

Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said, “Combining this pilot program with an educational campaign will give us the feedback from residents we need to ensure that everyone can enjoy the park.”

Councilman Eugene Cook said, “Over the years many people have reached out to the Town Board asking to remove the Heckscher Park ban on allowing dogs in the park. As these residents would like to enjoy using Heckscher Park with their families, including their canine companions, as they have

been able to do at other locations without incident for years. As a dog owner, I understand the strong relationship between an owner and their companion. This pilot program to allow leashed dogs in Heckscher Park will build on those relationships, and it will also be a benefit for our community as a whole.

In order to ensure that this is properly implemented, I would like to hear all of our resident’s comments, concerns, and suggestions during the pilot period so that we can ensure this program can continue in the future or not.”

Councilman Ed Smith said, “I encourage pilot programs. It gives the residents and elected officials the opportunity to work together on programs within the Town to meet everyone’s needs and pleasures.”

The different facets of the educational program were worked out by a committee that included representatives from various Town departments and LI-DOG; Karen Thomas, who organized the peti-

tion drive asking for dogs to be allowed in the park; and Len Urban, from the Town’s Citizens Advisory Committee on Persons with Disabilities. The Citizens Advisory Committee wanted to ensure that a dog-friendly Heckscher remained friendly for everyone, including persons with mobility issues.

“I thank LI-DOG and all of the members of the committee for creating this educational program, and I appreciate the dedication of the volunteer ambassadors to help us,” Councilwoman Cergol said.

The video is in its final editing stages. When finished, it will be viewable on the Town’s and LI-DOG’s websites and social media pages.

The next students to be recognized were those that comprise the John H. Glenn High School Shared Decision Making Committee. Alexandra Haddad, Cateyann Bernhard, Matthew McNierney, Zain Siddiqui and Robert Spelman recently implemented a Student of the Month initiative at the high school, where students from each grade level are nominated by their classmates for their outstanding commitment to the school community. “It’s wonderful to be able to recognize the students behind the initiative,” Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert said.

To conclude the recognitions portion of the meeting, Harley Avenue Primary School Principal Elissa Millan shared a heartfelt video in recognition of for-

mer Board of Education President Julia Fried.

Following, Ms. Milan’s video, Dr. Bossert presented Mrs. Fried with a clay mosaic plaque from the Elwood Middle School National Junior Art Honor Society and a picture book created by students from James H. Boyd Intermediate School.

In further recognition, the John H. Glen High School A Cappella group performed “Carol of the Bells” at the start of the board meeting in her honor.

Additionally, the Board of Education presented her with a plaque in honor of her service to the board.

Mrs. Fried joined the board in 2014 and served as its president from 2017 to 2019. She was an active member of the Parent Teachers Association, curriculum committee and was a highly dedicated and active member of the school community.

“She has supported us, challenged us, and most of all, done what’s right for our students,” Ms. Millan said. ‘Thank you for all that you’ve done.”

To start the evening off, Principal Carisa Burzynski awarded Hannah Kleinman and Melissa Mandel with certificates in recognition of their exceptional performances at the NYSSMA All- State Conference.

Hannah, an oboist in the school’s symphonic band, and Melissa, a treble chorus soprano, are both active members of the school community and music program.

“Thank you for always being such a tremendous source of pride for the Elwood School District,” Mrs. Burzynski said.

The board then welcomed Director of Athletics David Shanahan to the podium to congratulate some exemplary students.

Reptile Erik Visits Harley Avenue Roaches, frogs and tortoises, oh my! Students at Harley Avenue Primary School screamed in excitement as Erik ‘the Reptile Guy’ walked around the school’s cafetorium with his reptilian and amphibious friends.

Erik Callender – the owner and director of Erik’s Reptile Edventures of Middle Island – presented his Reptile Rescue

Awareness program, which he said was created to inspire students to enjoy and respect nature, and to excel in life science.

The students met Oreo the Tegu lizard and Dozer the African spur thighed tortoise among other scaly creatures.

They learned about each of the animals’ environments and the differences between herbivores and carnivores.

Additionally, the students learned to be mindful of how to care for animals and further pledged to read 21 books about a certain creature before buying it as a pet.

“Respect the animals and the environment,” Mr. Callender said. “It’s important to know where it comes from and how to care for it.”
