Art that Tells Stories February 26th through July 30th, 2016 The Brush is My Pen explores American art in the narrative tradition, from the 1820s through today. From the classicallyinfluenced historical and genre paintings of 19th century artists to powerful contemporary narrative work, artists have long created richly evocative stories. In this exhibition’s 18 paintings, prints, and photographs, chosen primarily from the Long Island Museum’s permanent collection, artists have explored every aspect of the human condition, just as writers of literary and stage productions. The exhibition explores narrative art through four separate themes - work, satire, drama, and hope - and includes a range of work from artists of every era. William Sidney Mount’s Loss and Gain, 1847, a satirical work in support of the American temperance movement, is a typically striking example

Mercy Gives Back Each year at Christmas time, employees of Mercy Medical Center “adopt” underprivileged families and donate new clothes, toys and gift cards that are distributed the week of Christmas. This year, 19 families were presented with
Christmas cheer, including two that welcomed newborns in December - one set of twin boys and a baby girl. Also, the Oceanside Knights of Columbus collaborated with the hospital with their charitable initiative “Coats for Kids,” donating two
cases of brand new winter coats to help keep children warm this winter season. In addition, during the month of December the staff at Mercy delivered more than 20 cases of food to St. Agnes Cathedral’s food pantry to benefit residents in need.

Life As We Know It By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “See the glass half full, and find the good in everyone…” So wrote one of my former teachers in the pages of my high school yearbook, a sentiment that seems to resonate more with each passing year. Too often do we become consumed by the monotony of our daily routines, allowing the negativity which surrounds us to engulf what always begins as the best of intentions. With this New Year, I hope to maintain a certain degree of optimism in the face of what can only be classified as Life. As Frank Sinatra sang, “You’re ridin’ high in April, shot down in May; but I know I’m gonna change that tune when I’m back on top, back on top in June…” And so it
goes, month-to-month, dayto-day, even hour-to-hour. You just simply don’t know what may be in store over the horizon, an uncertainty which inspires both excitement and apprehension, depending upon your makeup. The only constant is the need to adapt with the rolling tide, rather than allowing it to sweep us away. We may not be able to control what obstacles come our way; but we can surely dictate how we react to them. So, as we begin 2016, let us dispense with whatever shallow resolutions we have most likely already broken, in favor of something far more meaningful – a new way of thinking, of being, of living. Let us find that good in everyone and see the bright side of the cloudiest of days. Call it misplaced idealism
if you will; but to me, it is perhaps the greatest sense of realism there is. Learning to deal with life in all its glory and chaos is as real as it gets. To all my readers, I thank you for yet another year of support, of sweet sentiments and gentle critiques. 2015 was a year of milestones: my 10th year working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, my 500th In Step column and the expansion of our blossoming sister publication, Seasons™ Magazine. It was also, let us not fail to mention, the debut of Buddy the Betta and his occasional In Swim features. {Buddy sends his regards as well, and thanks his supporters for their constant fan letters and accolades.} Here’s to another year of making memories… and, most importantly, of making the best of things.

The Huntington Opportunity Resource Center will offer some new programs as 2016 begins, helping to provide training in the hospitality industry to disadvantaged and displaced workers and offering a site where the aged, blind and disabled can sign up for public insurance/assistance programs. The employment
training is being offered as a result of two state grants, each for $50,000, the Town obtained through St. Joseph’s College, which has partnered with the Opportunity Resource Center on a number of programs and which will conduct the training in conjunction with Suffolk County Community College.

The first grant provides $50,000 in Workforce Investment Act funds for occupational skills training of dislocated workers to prepare them for full-time jobs (35 hours or more per week) needed by a business group or businesses in the region. A “dislocated worker” is defined as an individual who: either who has been terminated or laid off, or who has received notice of termination or layoff, and is unlikely to return to a previous industry or occupation; has been terminated or laid off, or has received notice of termination or layoff, as a result of any permanent closure of, or substantial layoff at, a plant, facility or enterprise; was self-employed, but is unemployed as a result of general economic conditions or because of natural disasters; is a displaced homemaker - an individual who has been dependent on the income of another family member, but is no longer supported by that income; or is unemployed or underemployed and is experiencing difficulty in obtaining or upgrading employment. The second grant provides another $50,000 in Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funds to train dislocated workers in special populations (for example, ex-offenders, limited English proficiency, individuals with disabilities, recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and veterans) who require classroombased occupational skills training in order to be qualified to be hired for full time employment in the region. “These grants enable the Opportunity Resource Center to provide additional services to Town

residents and become an even more valuable resource for all those who can benefit from the center’s programs,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone. “We value the partnership with St. Joseph’s College and thank them for their active role in helping to obtain this grant.” “We are always looking for new ways to broaden the way the Opportunity Resource Center addresses the need for services that will help residents improve their lives, whether by linking them to assistance programs or by preparing them for jobs that are in demand,” Councilwoman Tracey Edwards said. “These training programs have the potential to be life-changing, and the Town is pleased to be able to serve our residents this way.” In addition to basic courses preparing
people for entry into the workforce, including basic workforce skills, the training programs will offer two specialized sequences in the hospitality industry and in welding and soldering. The hospitality sequence will provide students with customer service training, basic server skills, interpersonal relations, problem solving and listening skills, as well as basic hospitality finance and computer skills that align with the industry. Those skills are required for entry level positions in areas that include, but are not limited to, customer service, receptionists and information clerks, housekeeping staff, healthcare support workers, activities aides and food service workers. The goal of this training is to ensure entry level proficiency of the various un/underemployed and
special populations that will enable them to advance into higher and better positions over time. St Joseph’s, whose instructors will offer the course, has developed a highly respected hospitality and tourism management undergraduate program that has a proven track record with successful job placement of students prior to and upon graduation. The soldering and welding sequence will be run by Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Center, under an agreement with St. Joseph’s. The training will begin at the Opportunity Resource Center and continue at the college’s Brentwood campus. The sequence will lead to American Welding

That program, which is overseen by the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, provides in-person enrollment assistance for programs and services. The target
groups are people who fall into one of three categories: certified blind, certified disabled or 65 years of age or older. Additionally, Medicare recipients looking for supplemental Medicaid insurance, as well as people looking for Medicare savings programs to help with Medicare expenses can apply for those programs with help from the enrollers. The enrollers will
be at the Opportunity Resource Center one day a month: January 14th, February 11th, March 10th, April 14th, May 12th, June 9th, July 14th, August 10th, September 8th, October 13th, November 10th and December 8th. Veteran Pins Awarded Dix Hills Fire Department (DHFD). Christopher Schiavo is a 26 year member of the DPFD, served as Chief from 2000-2008 and currently serves as a Fire Commissioner. A Lieutenant Colonel in his 31st year of service in the United States Air Force, he serves as Liaison Director for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He is a pilot in the Aviation Unit of the Suffolk County Police Department, is president of the Suffolk Police Veterans Association and is a member of the Sons of Italy and the
Knights of Columbus. Alan Berkowitz is an Advanced EMT-CC and serves as Second Assistant Chief of the DHFD, where he has been a member for 15 years. He was deployed at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the attacks on our nation on September 11th, 2001 and was awarded Town Chief of the Year in 2014. He is a Major in the Air Force Reserves Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corp. He led a unit that aided in the prosecution of Iraqi terrorists and currently serves as an Administrative Law Judge.
LIGHTHOUSE MISSION - On December 22nd, Supervisor Ed Romaine celebrated the holidays with Reverend Jim Ryan at the Lighthouse Mission’s annual toy drive. The event was held at the Kreamer Street Elementary School in Bellport. Lighthouse Mission is a faith-based, non-denominational organization that provides food for more than 156,000 people in need on Long Island each year. In addition, Lighthouse Mission provides hope, encouragement and vital information to help people overcome poverty and live productive, purpose-filled lives.
