Asharoken got into the holiday spirit as Santa Claus arrived for a visit at Asharoken Village Hall, where he spread holiday greetings and hearty “Ho, Ho, Ho’s” to all. Santa was greeted by Asharoken Mayor Greg Letica and Village Trustees as he arrived on his sleigh from the North Pole with the assistance of the Northport Fire Department. Santa was warmly welcomed by Village officials, police, residents, and lots of happy wide-eyed children. Santa and his helpers distributed plenty of cookies, oranges and candy-filled canes. These surveys demonstrated widespread use of singleuse plastic bags in grocery stores, pharmacies and convenience stores throughout Suffolk County, and are believed to be the most comprehensive in the nation to document shoppers bag use habits. More than 11,000 individuals were surveyed outside the aforementioned establishments, and 71 percent of those individuals were using non-recyclable bags. Next year, these surveys will be taken again, once

a 5-cent fee on plastic and paper bags is implemented. The hope is to analyze the effect of the law on consumer behavior. “It’s inspiring to see how a small group of students can have a large impact on important matters in our community,” said Environmental Team member Sabrina Kramer. “We are excited to see this law take effect, and we hope to see that people will change their habits for the better, and replace their plastic bags with reusable ones, creating a cleaner future for all of us.”

And so, we begin again. The slate has been wiped clean, for now. There is always carryover, damage to be repaired and turmoil to be calmed. Life is like that, for better or worse. As much as a new year cannot undo the happenings of the year prior, each new day is an opportunity for a fresh start of sorts; each hour, each minute even. We have only to forge ahead, to take these chances as they are presented to us. May we all carry this sentiment with us into 2018… and, if you do happen to have a neatly categorized list of goals for the year, give it a glance from time to time; make adjustments as needed, and keep moving forward. That, in itself, is a resolution everyone can get behind.

Walking in Wonderland Bellerose Avenue Elementary School in the Northport-East Northport School District was transformed into a literarythemed winter wonderland on December 21st. The doors to each room were decorated by the PTA to represent the holiday book the class had read. Some of the books read included “Snowflake Bentley,” “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,”

and more. Students were pleasantly surprised when they arrived at that morning and the school was transformed! Throughout the day, Christmas music played on the speakers as students, clad in their holiday pajamas, were taken on a tour of the school to view each room’s door. Inside the classrooms, students worked on holiday crafts,

such as decoupage votive holders and homemade snow globes, to bring home to their families. “Holiday activities are fun, but they’re so much more than that,” said Principal Lori Beekman, “they bring everyone parents, teachers, and students together, further strengthening our community.”

(NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy,

strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer

questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. The mannequins arrived with an additional anonymous donation of 50 high-fashion vintage couture gowns from top designers, such as Jacques Fath, Ungaro and Yves St Laurent. LIU Post’s growing fashion merchandising program is unique to the region, with a focus on the business end of the fashion distributing new toys - industry. The mannequins last year CHS Services and dresses will be part collected more than 700 of a Capstone project this toys our biggest donation spring where the students will catalog and display ever. These donations assisted the items, creating a full over 400 families. Also, fashion exhibition with warm winter clothing detailed signage as their articles were collected for culminating project. As part of the Intro to Fashion Merchandising coursework, students studied fashion by the decade from the Victorian era to the present. The couture gowns all come from the 1980s era. “We have Halston, Saint Laurent, Lanvin, and all these different designers that we talk about,” Serota said. “We discuss the decade they’re from and what the lasting influences are and now we have this collection here.” Students were on hand to help dress the mannequin. The pride and wonder they felt upon having a tangible class lesson come to life in their hands was palpable. “I think it’s very cool to see pieces that we’ve seen in class come alive, and actually be able to hold them and

dress the mannequins,” said Samantha Perez, a student in the Fashion Merchandising program. “Especially the fact that they are such important pieces from designers that we’ve already learned about.” The pieces ranged from formal gowns from Yves Saint Laurent to cutting edge pieces from the father of haute couture Jacques Fath to iconic pieces, like a Burberry trench coat. “It’s also revolutionary the ways everything changes from one era to the next,” said Fashion Merchandising student Judith Solorzano. “For example, the Burberry jacket. I could wear that right now on an everyday basis. I can see how it could sell just the same today. Just because of the brand Burberry.” Solorzano considered a

The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that was originally founded as the Nassau-Suffolk Partnership for the Homeless in 1985. LICH now works to educate the public and advocates for the development and expansion of permanent, affordable housing - so those working in low-wage jobs and/or on disability and public assistance can have decent, safe housing for themselves and their children. This organization brings together over 60 nonprofits and local government with the mission to help people on Long Island who are facing homelessness or are homeless. Each month, their members come together and listen to current concerns and opportunities within the nonprofit community, learn about openings in housing placements and more. The Coalition runs a popular Boutique in Amityville, right by their main office. The Boutique is open on Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and allows veterans and other neighbors-inneed to access, free of charge, new and gently used essential items such as clothing, housewares and emergency food. This Boutique is much more than a distribution

center, as it engages the community in volunteerism and spreads awareness about the issue of homelessness. The Boutique always welcomes volunteers and donations and offers community service hours to those willing to volunteer! At this point in time, they are currently taking donations for the following items: winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, toiletries and baby essentials such as wipes and diapers. They are also in need of volunteers for their next sorting event on January 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. LICH also offers annual events that you can become involved with such as their “Have a Heart for the Homeless” Candlelight Vigil (scheduled for April 10th, 2018), their Homeless Count and their Backpack Pirates and Supply for our Students events. Their annual Homeless Count Event occurs each January, and is a time when trained volunteers go out across the island to coordinate point-in-time counts of sheltered and unsheltered men, women and children. During this time, they also distribute toiletry kits, sleeping bags and other essential items to the homeless. production takes place for creating a design,” said Solorzano. “It’s like learning a chapter through an experience and talking to people in the industry. We met girls who are probably not so far from our age who have these jobs, who are working for Philip Lim and other brands and getting higher promotions. It’s inspiring to see girls just like us, getting out of college and getting jobs like that. It makes it feel achievable.”

(NAPSI)—If you ever find yourself lying awake at night, you’re not alone— even if no one else is in the room. That’s because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-quarter of the U.S. population reports occasionally not getting enough sleep, while nearly 10 percent experience chronic insomnia. Why To Sleep Good sleep, says the CDC, can decrease the risk of sickness and weight

gain. It helps you think more clearly, decreases stress, and leaves you more energetic and productive. As these qualities improve, relationships tend to improve, too. Lack of sleep can be a problem on the job, too. A study by the Law Enforcement Survival Institute showed that in a computer simulated shoot/ don’t shoot situation, fatigued police officers were more likely to shoot when not necessary. What To Do

Many sleep specialists recommend these four steps: 1. Don’t drink caffeine late in the day. 2. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark and relaxing environment; neither too hot nor too cold. 3. Make sure your bed is comfortable and don’t use it for reading, watching TV or listening to music. 4. Take a bath before bedtime.

Take 2 Simple Steps To Help Protect Your Family (NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames.
