Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area.

If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster.

Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them.

• Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.

• Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself.

• Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu?

A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated.

• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage.

• Stay away from people who are sick.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

• If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area.

• Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines?

A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable.

A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types?

A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine.

The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot.

Some minor side effects that could occur are: Soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, Low grade fever, Muscles aches .If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it.

The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses and does not cause severe symptoms often associated with influenza illness. (In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely.) Side effects can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, Low grade fever, muscle aches, vomiting.

Taking A Bite Out Of Hunger September is National Hunger Awareness Month and Panera Bread is stepping up its support of Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, by holding its third annual “Take a Bite out of Hunger” food collection drive.

From Monday, September 17th through Friday, September 21st, Panera Bread is “egging on” donations of nonperishable food items to Island Harvest by providing guests who drop off one or more can or box before 11 a.m. with a free Grilled Breakfast Sandwich of their choice right on the spot. The offer is valid at all 22 Long Island Panera Bread bakery-cafes from September 17th through the 21st.

“Last year, we grilled up over 3,000 free Grilled Breakfast Sandwiches and

collected over 2200 pounds of food to help Island Harvest provide critical food support for Long Island’s hungry,” said Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Doherty Enterprises, franchisee for the Long Island Panera Bread bakery-cafes. “Year round we package up and donate the bread, bagels, and pastries that remain on our shelves at end of the day to help Island Harvest.

During ‘Take a Bite out of Hunger,’ we invite our guests to help, too with canned goods and other non-perishables.”

GOING FOR THE GOLD - In support of the Doherty Enterprises Inc.’s WOW a Friend Foundation, which raises money through voluntary contributions by its employees, 400 Applebee’s and Panera Bread restaurant staff from Long Island and New Jersey descended on the Calhoun High School gymnasium for a showdown of Olympic proportions. Fifty-one teams faced off in a volleyball tournament that helped raise more than $5,700 - funds that will be earmarked to help fellow employees hit by financial hardship due to a natural disaster, illness or other loss.

Before I turn this column over to Dori Scofield, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter Superviser, I’m going to request that our Readers respond as quickly and as generously as they can. It’s going to take all of us to pitch in and help to heal these poor innocent souls. The 23 were used by their human owners in horrific and inhumane ways.

Some were used as living “bait” to train the fighting dogs, their teeth filed down or their mouths strapped shut, unmercifly bitten and mauled. Their faces and bodies bare the visable scars; their hearts the invisible aching with longing for the love and homes they would never know. Others were used as breeders, living in small filthy cages - no human contact, no grassy fields to run in, no sweet fresh air or warm human touch. They bore litters of puppies sold to continue the cycle of cruelty. And then there are the fighting dogs, beaten and forced to act against their own sweet natures, prodded into tearing and killing. They were killed and discarded as garbage if they refused to fight.

Readers, our combined communities of Nassau and Suffolk Counties need to pull together and make sure each and every one of these dogs has a “happily ever after.” There was evil living amoung us and it will take the good in all of us to make things right.

Please read on for a glimpse of what Dori saw on the raid that saved 23 lives...

“On September 9th, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, along with the Suffolk County SPCA and Suffolk County Police Department,

confiscated 23 Pit Bulls from a deplorable home in Shirley, NY. Many of the dogs were stacked in rusted cages in a dark, very hot garage.

All were living in their own feces and urine. Others were locked up in various rooms of the house with little or no ventilation, and the remainder lived outside in makeshift kennels. The stench could only be tolerated by a seasoned rescuer. There are few words to describe the expression in the eyes that stared back at us, unsure if we were friend or foe. After five hours of examining and removing the dogs, they were all brought back to The Brookhaven Animal Shelter to begin a new chapter in their lives. I’m sure many readers will cheer for their safety but please understand, they are but another 23 dogs added to the already overcrowded shelter.

These dogs need homes desperately. Some are young, some are old, some are more beat up and scarred than others. But one thing is true... all are yearning for the love, companionship and a warm, cozy environment only a loving home can provide. Yes, we need money toward their medical care, blankets to keep them feeling secure, food to nourish their bodies, but more than anything, homes to nourish their souls. Most of the dogs are petite and all are sweet and submissive. I am asking everyone on Long Island to do something, one thing - small or large - for these dogs. Whether you can donate $1 toward the Help the Animals Fund or adopt one of these orphans, please do something. We are the voice of the voiceless... be a voice, change a life forever.”

Winthrop-University Hospital will participate in the ADA’s Step Out Walk To Stop Diabetes on Sunday, September 30th, at 10 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park. This noncompetitive, family and team-friendly event is aimed at bringing together members of the community to raise funds for diabetes research, education and advocacy.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes – a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both.

What’s more, an estimated 79 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, a condition that occurs when blood glucose levels are higher than normal (100 to 125 mg/dl after

Direct Support Recognition Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, is recognizing its Direct Support Professionals for a job well done. DDI is celebrating the Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week by taking notice of the enormous contributions their employees make on a daily

basis to improve the lives of people with disabilities by helping them to lead their lives as independently as possible.

Voice Of The Future On Tuesday, September 11th, the Port Jefferson Fire Department held a memorial ceremony at their firehouse for all those affected by the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, 2001.

Local firefighters, police officers and other key members of the Port Jefferson community were in attendance to reflect and offer their respects.

Members of the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School fifth-grade class, led by music instructor Jessica Pastor, sang God Bless America at the start of the service.

Former Port Jefferson Fire Department Chief Desmond O’Sullivan addressed attendees. In his remarks he said, “Never forget those firefighters and police officers that were at 9/11, and be thankful every day of your lives for what they did.” He quoted President Abraham

Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address by stating, “The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.”

Mr. O’Sullivan continued by recognizing the elementary students present and pronounced them as “the bright future of our world.” He emphasized how important it is for younger generations to learn about 9/11 and to “never forget what this day is about.”

Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church Pastor Rev. Patrick M. Riegger led opening and closing prayers. A list of local first responders who lost their lives during the attacks was read, followed by a ringing of the bell for each individual. “Most of our staff probably remembers exactly where they were and what they were doing on this tragic day 11 years ago,” stated Murphy Assistant Principal Kevin Finnerty. “Our students were only two or three years old – too young to fully understand what was happening on this day. But now they are old enough and mature enough to understand that every generation will face a tragedy of some type.

What counts is not how it happened or the reason it did, but how that generation handles it, and whether it has made them smarter and stronger.”

Paying tribute to those lives lost and the brave men and woman who came to the nation’s aid on that historic day, students, teachers and staff members in the Three Village Central School District marked the 11th anniversary of 9/11 in their own ways this year.

Proudly carrying 72 flags, which were purchased last year with a donation from the school’s student government, students at Ward Melville High School once again worked to create a patriotic display on the front lawn of the building.

The flag bearers were randomly selected during their eighth-period class; the 11th student on the class roster was chosen to represent his or her class and carry a flag. Passing motorists showed their support of the students’ efforts by honking their horns and waving as the flags were secured to their posts along Old Town Road. The completed display will remain up through the week of 9/11.

“I think it is a really special way to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11,” stated junior Melanie Mackey.

“The display is a symbol of our school coming together to salute those who served and are serving, as well as a

Believe me, I will never truly understand those who seem to make their living by spewing hurtful opinions toward others.

Perhaps it makes them feel better about themselves; perhaps they are not

equipped to put their words into something more constructive. Either way, I believe it is a combination of arrogance and ignorance which motivates such behavior.

But so be it. Those who live their lives to bring others down will continue to do so. Those who strive to make a difference in the lives of others will continue their quest to do so. In the end, all that matters is that a difference was made.

If that means wearing that road uniform with pride in the face of adversity, then so be it. Being on the team sure beats being on the outside looking in, doesn’t it?

The Port Jefferson Board of Education and Port Jefferson Teachers Association have approved a two-year contract to replace the contract that expired on June 30th, 2011.

The new two-year contract calls for no increase in salary (beyond step for those eligible) for 2011-2012, along with a hard freeze for 2012-2013 (no increase in salary or step).

“The Board appreciates the efforts of the PJTA leadership and their members in negotiating an agreement reflective of the difficult economic situation our community faces,” said Board of Education President Kathleen Brennan. “There will most likely continue to be the need for shared sacrifice as we move

forward. Hopefully all stakeholders can work together respectfully and cooperatively to provide our students with the best education possible.”

Port Jefferson UFSD, along with other community governmental agencies, has cited great concern for the future of the power plant located in Port Jefferson Harbor. A reassessment has been filed with the Town of Brookhaven, which has the potential to reduce revenues of the district by millions of dollars, jeopardizing staffing, programs, and the current residential tax rate.

“A number of faculty members live here, but all of us understand the challenges posed by the loss of revenue,” said Brian Snow, the President of the PJTA. “The more

information we have in the future, the better we will be able to establish a new contract that is in the best interests of everyone.”

Another amendment to the expired contract will have a positive impact on instruction. Teachers will now have an average of 7.5 prep periods every week, a reduction from 9 last year (and 10 during the 201011 school year). Current levels of instruciton have been maintained in the areas of Physical Education, Art, Library and Music. Elementary students will attend swimming and Health every other week, increasing classroom contact on the average of 60 minutes per week. In addition, classroom teachers will accompany students and lead

Outstanding grievances by the PJTA against the district have been discontinued as a result of the new contract. The

parties also agreed to concurrent use of paid FMLA childcare, resulting in a new formula that requires the use of two banked sick days for each day of paid FMLA childcare leave. The

financial impact of this new formula will lower the district’s costs for accrued time payouts at the time of retirment while allowing for continuity of instruction when leaves are taken.

Hunting & Fishing Day On Saturday, September 22nd the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will celebrate the 41st Annual National Hunting and Fishing Day in collaboration with the Suffolk Alliance of Sportsmen at DEC’s Hunter Check Station in Ridge (Suffolk County), DEC Region One Director Peter A. Scully announced today.

Reward Schools Named New York State Education Commissioner John King has announced that all three of Port Jefferson School District’s schools have been designated as Reward Schools for the 2012-2013 school year.

This prestigious statewide designation classifies Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, Port

Jefferson Middle School and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School as among the highest achieving schools in the state. Port Jefferson is the only district in Suffolk County to have all of its schools achieve this status.

The New York State Education Department bestowed these awards based on high student

performance on state assessments, graduation rates and overall academic progress. Port Jefferson School District is now eligible to compete for a Commissioner’s School Dissemination Grant of up to $150,000 to further advance students’ educational opportunities.

Dr. Takeuchi is an internationally recognized expert in the multidisciplinary field of battery research, whose innovative work inventing lithium/silver vanadium oxide (Li/SVO) has been instrumental in saving innumerable lives. As one of the nation’s most prolific inventors and energy storage researchers, Dr. Takeuchi’s work is vital in our efforts to provide transformative solutions for smart grid energy storage and light vehicle electrification.”

Dr. Takeuchi was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame (2011) and is a recipient of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation presented by President Obama in 2009, the highest honor possible for technological achievement in the United States. She has been inducted into the prestigious National Academy of Engineering and selected as a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. She has

received numerous “inventor of the year” awards and has been recognized on a number of occasions for her impact as a woman in the sciences.

Dr. Takeuchi received her BA in Chemistry and History from the University of Pennsylvania and her PhD in Organic Chemistry from Ohio State University. She completed her postdoctoral work at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the University at Buffalo.

She holds 153 patents, has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles in such journals as Analytical Chemistry, Journal of Physical Chemistry, Journal of Power Sources, Journal of the Electrochemical Society, Chemistry of Materials and more. She has conducted more than 100 invited lectures/presentations, published four books and three book contributions.

Breast Cancer Awareness The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is urging women to get mammograms.

“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a significant time to remind women to be proactive about their health and get mammograms,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program “Often women will put their own health on hold as they take care of family members; we want send out the message that when you take care of yourself, you’re taking care of your family.”

With another school year underway, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker would like to remind parents that the North Shore Youth Council is registering children for their Before and After School Child Care programs.

The North Shore Youth Council provides school aged child care programs for families in the Rocky Point, Shoreham-Wading River, and Miller Place districts. The program offers peace of mind for parents who are looking for a safe place for their elementary school

children before school starts and after school ends.

Children enjoy an environment that stimulates their need to learn while offering positive experiences to support them in their growth and development.

They participate in age appropriate activities which include arts and crafts, story time, board games, and are provided with a place to meet friends for sports, homework help, and other recreational activities.

Registration is also available on a per diem

basis. The program takes place within the child’s school building.

Additionally, the North Shore Youth Council provides counseling for youth and families that reside in the Rocky Point, Shoreham-Wading River, and Miller Place school districts.

Donna Dean, Ms. New York Senior America 2012 hails from Coram, Long Island. She is a graduate of Long Island High School, attended Queen's College and Brooklyn Conservatory of Music.

Donna is a licensed Realtor and Property Manager. She is most proud to be a member of the Blue Star Mothers, an organization open to any Mother with a son or daughter serving in the military. Ms. NY Senior America is the Mother of four and is blessed with five beautiful grandchildren, and has realized her dreams of being a vocalist and entertains at local clubs, hospitals, nursing homes and senior centers.

On Thursday, August 16th, the Port Jefferson Middle School hosted its annual barbeque for incoming sixth-graders.

During the summerthemed event, parents and students were given the opportunity to meet with administrators and discuss the upcoming

school year.

Within a tropical setting of festive decorations, island music and Hawaiian leis, parents served the faculty and students hot dogs, hamburgers and other grilled favorites. Students ate and mingled with their classmates and friends.

Locker assignments were also distributed during this time.

New Middle School Principal Antonio Santana was one of the faculty members in attendance to greet the incoming middle school students.

Auto Show & Swap Meet The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, in cooperation with the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society, are pleased to announce the 11th Annual Auto Show and Swap Meet at Field #4 of Robert Moses State Park. The event will take place on Sunday, September 30th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Rain Date: Sunday, October 7th.

Features of this event include music, vendors and a 50/50 raffle.

The contestants, women 60 years of age or older are judged in four categories: T h e INTERVIEW...earlier on the day of the pageant, the judges meet privately with each contestant for five minutes to gain insight to her personality, poise and ability to communicate.

The purpose of the interview is to determine how well the contestant would represent Ms. New York Senior America with the public and the media.

Restoration Grant Awarded The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum has received a $5,000 grant for the conservation treatment of a valuable seventeenth-century Dutch oil painting in its collection. The grant was made by the Conservation Treatment Grant Program of the Greater Hudson Heritage Network, a regranting agency of the New York State Council on the Arts.

Stephanie Gress, the Vanderbilt's director of curatorial services, said the painting, City of Boulogne by Hendrick Dubbels (1620-1676), is in “poor condition and in urgent need of restoration.” The work will be performed by the accomplished conservator Alexander Katlan of Flushing, NY. The painting, original to

the collection of William K. Vanderbilt II, was treated last in 1986, Gress said.

“The darkened varnish was cleaned and the painting was stabilized by adding a cloth lining to the back of the canvas.

The museum will provide matching funds to refurbish the ornate, gilt frame.”

Little is known of Dubbels’s life, Gress said.

He was born in Amsterdam in 1620 and worked as a painter of seascapes and winter landscapes from circa 1641 until his death in 1676. (Some historical sources list his lifespan as 1621-1707.)

“A lot of Dubbels's work was attributed to another artist and it is very rare to find his paintings in the United States,” she said.

“Much of his work is in

collections in Florence and London and in England's National Gallery. Our painting may be one of the few in this country.”

Gress said the Vanderbilt collection includes other maritime paintings - a favorite of Mr. Vanderbilt - along with nineteenth-century American and Dutch portraits, genre paintings (scenes from everyday life), Spanish religious works and European landscapes. “Although Mr. Vanderbilt collected art and antique furnishings,” she said, “his focus as a collector was ethnographic artifacts,” many of which are displayed in the Memorial Wing of the Vanderbilt Mansion.

Paul Allan, theatrical producer at the Performing Arts Center of Suffolk County, has been appointed to Suffolk County’s Citizens Advisory Board for the Arts (CAB).

The CAB reviews and recommends policy for Suffolk, evaluates funding applications, attends various county arts events, helps develop programs to promote and enhance the arts, and reports its findings to the county legislature.

The award is given annually by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher to students who have demonstrated excellence, originality and promise in the arts. It is accompanied with $1,000 and is intended as a bridge between SUNY study in the arts and entry into a professional arts career.
