For the tenth consecutive year, the Long Island Game Farm is inviting graduating high school seniors to apply for the Stanley and Susan Novak Memorial Scholarship. The time is now to apply for the annual scholarship, which is worth $1,000. Each year, this award is granted to a graduating senior from Long Island who plans to attend a two-

year or higher college or university program, and exemplifies the qualities required to become a pioneer in nature, whether it be in the field of veterinary medicine or environmental science. The application deadline is Friday, May 31st, 2013. Now in its 44th year, the Long Island Game Farm was founded in 1970 by Stanley and Diane

Novak and is located in Manorville. It features hundreds of animals on 25 acres of land. Year after year, the park is visited by thousands and enjoyed by all. It has been an educational site for school children to learn about animals and nature for decades. The scholarship was established in 2004 to honor the memories of

Stanley John Novak, the Game Farm’s co-founder, and his daughter, Susan Mary Novak. In 1999, Stanley Novak was 66 and had been building the Long Island Game Farm for nearly 30 years. Sadly, he died from a heart attack, leaving his legacy behind. In 2001, his daughter, Susan, who started working at the Game Farm when she was five years

The 62nd Annual Sammis Family House Tour, hosted by Family Service League (FSL), will be held on Wednesday, May 22nd, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This year’s Sammis Family House Tour features a wide array of well-appointed homes showcasing some of the North Shore’s finest architecture. The club members baked loaves of bread for the St. Anthony’s food pantry following Superstorm Sandy and have continued their community baking outreach by creating large cakes, St. Patrick’s Daythemed cupcakes and linzer tart cookies for the Lutheran Christian Center. During their visits to Bellhaven, the middle schoolers visit with the residents to play games or complete crafts.

“It feels really good to see the nursing home residents smiling because we have come to spend the day with them,” said sixthgrader Daisy Fiori. “I really enjoy having the opportunity to visit with the elderly and help feed the less fortunate in our community,” added sixthgrader Katie McGuire. The school’s club, which is comprised of 20 sixththrough eighth-grade students, is advised by teacher Agnes Ntiri.

North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Project Coastal Care has received one of Sustainable Long Island’s Getting It Done Awards this year for providing free medical care to New Yorkers impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Since the program’s inception last November, Project Coastal Care has treated more than 1,200 people in a mobile medical van that has made regularly scheduled visits to areas affected by the super storm, including Broad Channel in Queens, Staten Island and the Long Island communities of Long Beach and Lindenhurst. The van began treating people in Babylon this month. The North ShoreLIJ Health System received a $350,000 grant from the Robin Hood Relief Fund in February which will enable the van’s medical team to continue treating people through August. The mobile van is staffed with medical professionals, administrative support personnel and a driver. Patients have been treated for a range of illnesses and injuries, including upper respiratory infections, minor lacerations and maintenance of chronic and acute illnesses. In addition, the van’s medical staff provides flu and tetanus vaccinations. All of the care has been delivered free of charge, regardless of whether patients are insured. “We’re providing a valuable service to people during a difficult time in their lives and

what has proven to be a continued and extended challenging period,” said Maria Torroella Carney, MD, North Shore-LIJ’s director of communitybased geriatrics in the department of medicine, who leads the mobile van project. “It’s very rewarding to assist these residents as they put their lives back together. We’re bringing quality healthcare resources from the health system directly to their communities.” Lisa Burch, North Shore-LIJ’s director of sustainability and social responsibility, said the award recognizes North Shore-LIJ’s commitment to the community. “We’re not just about providing care to the patients who walk through our doors but also helping those who cannot get to the care they require,” she said. This is the third year that Sustainable Long Island is bestowing the “Getting It Done” awards to local organizations. This year, groups are being honored for their work helping people impacted by Hurricane Sandy. North Shore-LIJ received its award last week during Sustainable Long Island’s seventh annual sustainability conference held at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage State Park. On April 7th, members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Interact Club made their annual trip to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck located on the shores of Kaler’s Pond in Center Moriches. There, students participated in a “spring cleanup” of the grounds, which included raking leaves, mulching, planting flowers, painting and

preparing dorms for campers. Also in attendance were members of the Port Jefferson and Rocky Point rotary clubs and members of the National Junior Honor Society. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck’s mission is to help children and young adults ages 6 to 21 with both physical and developmental disabilities achieve equality,

dignity and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation and education in a summertime environment. “It is a special place where children can experience firsthand the pleasures that an active life has to offer,” said club adviser Sarah Ogden.

By: Tyler Cianciulli As any prospective college student knows, SAT scores and your Grade Point Average are not the only factors that play a role in the admissions process. It is said that colleges like a well-rounded student. The term “well-rounded” is often thrown about without thought, which raises the question: what exactly is an extracurricular? Most colleges would define the term “extracurricular” as something done or happening outside the normal curriculum of a school or college. This means anything from Archery to volunteering at a Zoo. Extracurricular activities don’t have to be

a chore; finding those that suit your interest are a good way to make friends, explore careers and ultimately help attain your goals. So what do you love to do? Really, anything counts as an extracurricular! Fishing, hiking, boating, constructing and drawing all help you as a person, and as an applicant. Even playing the guitar has hidden benefits that any future college would love to see. Most universities or colleges prefer an abundance of extracurricular activities, and some even base 25% of their decision on these items. It is a good idea to get an early start. One would advise freshmen to begin compiling their list of

sports, clubs, volunteer hours and passions now. It is one of those things essential to your success and maximizing the caliber of school you or your child plan on attending. Some of the most favorable activities include Student Council, being the captain of a sports team, club or any other leadership position. Having a plethora of after-school programs can only boost one’s chances, giving a reason to spend one’s time wisely! On top of being good résumé padding, extracurricular activities help portray your passions to a potential school. Is your kid going to college anytime soon? If so, remember, extracurricular activities actually matter!

The Washington Post released its annual list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools in the United States. The Port Jefferson School District is pleased to announce that with this year’s results, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School is ranked 339 out of 1,933 schools nationally, placing it 38th in the Northeast, 28th in New York State and third in Suffolk County. Port Jefferson has improved 14 spots in the state from 42nd in 2011. In order to calculate an index score for each school,

researchers take the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year and divide them by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June. Also noted is the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence (E&E). The Port Jefferson Middle School Science Olympiad team recently proved that anything is possible when you put your mind to it. The team, which placed fourth at the Suffolk County Regional competition in March, participated in the New York State competition held at Syracuse University. Team coach Adam Bouchard, along with Deborah Hagmeyer and Laurie McMillen, accompanied the students on their trip. The Port Jefferson team competed against top schools from 11 regions across the state and placed 26th out of 137. “They worked hard and learned scientific concepts on a high school

I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that. Ironic, isn’t it? But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions

among Journalism’s elite which reignites that fire – that passion to make a difference with the written word, the spoken word, photography… whatever the specific medium might be. During the course of the evening, the question arose as to what, specifically, qualified someone to be a Journalist. After all, anyone can blog, anyone can utilize social media to share their thoughts and opinions on all things important (or trivial, as the case may be). So where lies the distinction? The joke was made that, “Journalists have the ability to be fired.” This is actually true, to a degree. Those whose opinions are not solicited have no real accountability to the

The organization’s mission is to encourage young people to be science and technology

leaders by engaging them in exciting, mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills that inspire innovation and foster well-rounded life capabilities, including self-confidence, communication and leadership. “Students and their mentors spent six long

weeks – working up to six days a week – constructing a robot from raw materials such as aluminum and plexiglass pieces combined with digital electronic components, electric motors, cameras, transmissions, wheels and a host of other robotic parts,” said club adviser Brian Chalmers. “The mentors really enjoy

having the opportunity to share their knowledge with other student team members.” The team’s android performed strongly during the competition on all assigned tasks, which included shooting Frisbees onto a small platform atop a 10-foot-tall pyramid. The robot’s drive team coordinated the machine’s functions. Overall, the team placed within the top 20 out of 50 schools from around the state. Furthermore, senior members Michael Colucci and Greg Klesaris were awarded FIRST scholarships of $24,000 from Adelphi University and $30,000 from Stevens Institute of Technology, respectively. Michael will receive $6,000 annually for four years and Greg will receive the same amount over the course of five years should they choose to enroll in those universities.

For the second time this school year, a student at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School has achieved a perfect score at a WordMasters Challenge meet, a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. Fifthgrader Riley Watson earned a 20 out of 20 during the challenge’s second meet, which tested the students’ understanding of 50 different vocabulary words. Nationally, only 75 fifth-

graders achieved a perfect score. Other JAE students who achieved outstanding results in the meet included fourth-grader Trevor Hall and fifthgraders Molly Infranco and Anna Raicovi. JAE’s fourth- and fifthgrade GATES students take part in the three WordMasters Challenge meets every year. The vocabulary list for the challenges is cumulative, building upon previous

lists: 25 words are given during the first meet, 25 new words are added to the original roster at the second meet, and an additional 25 are added to the pre-existing 50 at the third challenge. To prepare, students work with teacher Donna Trapani to learn both the definitions of the assigned words and how to dissect them in order to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.

Bye Bye Birdie On April 5th and 6th, the John F. Kennedy Middle School Drama Club performed an exciting, and colorful, version of the well-known Broadway play Bye Bye Birdie. The talented ensemble cast of characters had their families, friends and teachers ‘dancing in their seats’ and singing along. The musical was performed at the JFK Middle School Auditorium. The play tells the story of a popular rocker by the

name of Conrad Birdie who is drafted into the Army, and who plans to give a last, goodbye, kiss to one of his fans before he leaves the country. Sounds a bit like Elvis Presley, doesn’t it? Anyway, he selects a fan living in Ohio, travels out there for the big kiss only to find Hugo, the jealous boyfriend, and other fans and detractors who make this a fun adventure for the entire audience. An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Suffolk County Community College’s Stand up SCCC Committee was formed to encourage college-wide conversations on the topic of bullying and cyberbullying. This semester, students were invited to submit creative works to be judged for the ability to express how bullying or cyberbullying touched their life, how it impacts human dignity, or how students can take a stand against it. DISPENSING COMFORT - After passing a difficult nurse entrance exam and interview, and after studying for 17 months, 107 male and female students graduated from the Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing. The ceremony took place on April 4th at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. It was a night filled with laughter, singing, crying, hugging, and cheering. These successful completers can now apply to take the New York State Licensing Examination.

Mather Hospital’s Auxiliary has presented the Hospital with a check for $221,000, which will be used toward future capital projects at the hospital. The funds, presented to Mather President Kenneth Roberts on Sunday at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Party, were raised in 2012 through lobby sales, the Gift Shop and the Thrift Shop, all operated by the Auxiliary and staffed by Mather Volunteers. “On behalf of the

entire Mather Family I thank the Auxiliary for their generous donation and continuing support of the Hospital,” said Mather Hospital President Kenneth Roberts. “We would not be able to carry out our mission without the help of our dedicated Auxilians and Volunteers. Over the years they have donated millions of hours of service and raised millions of dollars to help fund building projects and purchase new equipment.” The Auxiliary also

presented three college awards to Junior Volunteers who completed a minimum of 300 hours of service and who demonstrated excellence in volunteering. The awards range in value from $500 to $2,000. The winners are Mattea Cai, Mount Sinai High School, 303 hours of service; Allison Ragozzino, Miller Place High School, more than 400 hours of service; and Ryan Nardin, Mount Sinai High School, 570 hours.

Every Wednesday for the past two years, students from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Facilities Maintenance program at the Islip Career Center (ICC) in Oakdale, under the direction of teacher Art Pagano, have visited Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Patchogue to clean the church, religion classrooms, and the bagel breakfast area. The students only use green cleaning products when disinfecting, cleaning windows, and degreasing. The students visit the

church every Wednesday for about two hours. Over the course of the school year, the students will have completed almost 80 hours of community service. Mr. Pagano said, “Not only is this a great learning experience for the students but they can add this to their resume.” Eastern Suffolk BOCES students create a portfolio prior to graduating. Information about the community service they have performed while enrolled at BOCES, as well as letters of introduction,

thank you letters, and CDs containing pictures and videos of them working and learning their skill comprises a portfolio they take with them into the “world of work.” On behalf of Father Mike Torpey, Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Maintenance Manager Will Garcia said, “There are three buildings to care for here and having the students clean the church and other areas is very helpful. They are very good workers.”

or schools, a form is available to recognize their efforts. All volunteers are requested to bring a screwdriver if they have one. Refreshments are available to volunteers, including bagels during the morning hours and pizza and beverages for lunch. Pinwheels For Peace

The annual Ride for Life, started in 1998 by Christopher Pendergast, a 20year ALS patient, advocate, and founder of the Ride for Life Organization, raises awareness and funds for ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease. The 12-day power wheelchair trek by ALS patients across Long Island begins May 6th and ends May 18th. A cornerstone of the Ride is the Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony at Stony Brook. If seeing creates a better level of understanding, then Ward Melville High School student-musicians from the school’s Camerata, concert choir and women’s choral ensemble certainly have fostered a deeper appreciation for the way of life of the Maasai tribe of Kenya. For the second year, Ward Melville High School students have had the chance to learn about this tribe through a cultural exchange assembly with Chief Joseph Ole Tipanko, a teacher and ambassador to the United Nations, and fellow tribesman John. During their visit, the representatives spoke about their united effort to raise funds to build schools as well as better the lives and the quality of life in this tribe. The members’ presentation focused on the Maasai’s

culture, lifestyles and practice of peace among its people. Additionally, they spoke about the tribe’s history, community values, religious beliefs, leadership and political infrastructure and policy. The students had the chance to view traditional garb from the tribe, purchase jewelry pieces in support of the group’s effort and learn a traditional Maasai song. “Today’s program was a symbol of how music unites us globally,” said teacher Linda Contino. “The students were able to learn about this culture firsthand from the individuals who are so directly connected to it, and it provided an outlet to increase our community’s awareness of the struggles that these individuals face on a daily basis.” In an effort to assist

the representatives with their mission, the school collected more than $400 and close to 30 pairs of gently used adults’ and children’s shoes. As education for young girls is a rarity in the region, the students’ monetary donation will provide the funds for three Maasai girls to attend boarding school and aid in the protection of their human rights. Junior Thomas Brown, who has a personal connection to a similar fundraising effort in another Long Island school district, spearheaded the project. This is the second year the school has participated in the initiative and the second year it has been able to sponsor three girls’ boarding school expenses.

The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 19th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. More than 800 runners are expected. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take

place at 11:30 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy

Heart Healing Walk

In an effort to reduce their carbon footprints and create a greener tomorrow, students and staff members throughout the Three Village Central School District marked this year’s Earth Day with a variety of environmentally conscious activities. At Nassakeag Elementary School, the sixth-grade art club worked with teacher Erica Cacciatore on group art pieces. Using acrylic paint and large canvases, the close-to-40 students researched the topic of Earth Day and then created drawings to visually depict

what the day means to them. The completed pieces were put on display just prior to Earth Day for all to enjoy and as a reminder to be earthfriendly. Setauket Elementary School’s first-grade classes transformed trash into treasure as they fashioned useful items out of commonly discarded household products. From juice and milk cartons to water bottle caps and cardboard, the students created both practical and imaginative pieces. Tying into their literacy

lessons, the classes wrote a descriptive overview of their project and, with the help of their teachers, read poems and sang songs about Earth Day and recycling. “As part of our science unit, we talk about the importance of recycling and how certain items such as plastic don’t break down,” explained teacher Eileen Biamonte. The students’ projects were put on display on Earth Day, and each class had a chance to rotate through the classrooms’ “Earth Day museums.”

Servant activities and giving back to others are a big part of the curriculum at Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School; and from April 11th through April 13th, LuHi hosted its 3rd Meal Packing Event. LuHi students, faculty and staff helped to package soy, rice, dried vegetables and seasoning mix to prepare nutritionally balanced meals. These meal packets were then distributed to Island Harvest, The

Inn (Hempstead,) St. Hugh’s (Huntington Station,) St. Patrick’s (Huntington,) Our Lady of Grace Howard Beach,) the Freeport Emergency Food Pantry and other local food pantries in need. Additional meal packets are being shipped to the Andrew Grene School outside of Port au Prince, Haiti, an official feeding site that will prepare and serve the food to children in need. In total 310,044 meals were packed over the

three-day period. In addition to LuHi’s student body and faculty of 680, volunteers from Long Island Lutheran Day School, The Greenvale School, Mill Neck School for the Deaf, the Oyster Bay H.S. Interact Club, Hempstead-Uniondale Rotary Club, Hempstead HS Haitian-American Group, Elwood Elementary School and various Lutheran and other church and community organizations helped us

Meal Packing Event pack the meals to feed hungry individuals on Long Island and abroad. Members of the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station lent their muscle power and helped with the set-up of this event.
