summer, culminating in a symposium presentation, and will each receive a $1,000 stipend. Only about 14 percent of all applicants are accepted into the Simons Program, a program that only allows for three applications to be made per school.

According to Stony Brook University’s website, the Simons Program gives academically talented, motivated high school students between their junior and senior years the opportunity to engage

in hands-on research in science, math or engineering at Stony Brook University. Simons Fellows work with distinguished faculty mentors, learn laboratory techniques and tools, become part of active research teams and experience life at a research university.

Established in 1984, the Simons Summer Research Fellowship Program is supported by the Simons Foundation and individual faculty grants.

Ward Melville High School juniors Eric Hu and Eric Zhang were among the nearly 300 top Long Island high school students to participate in the 4th Annual Long Island Youth Summit at Dowling College. As participants of the Summit, the two were chosen to present their collective essay that discussed a possible solution to a topical problem Long Islanders face.

The students’ original research project focused on the impact of Hurricane Sandy, in particular addressing the need for

short- and long-term planning in the event of such a future weather occurrence, the need for increased communication, alternative energy sources and the effects of global warming. At the end of the program, the students were named one of the Best Project winners in the category of the “Impact of Hurricane Sandy” and were presented with Dowling scholarships.

Along with sharing their project, the students also had the chance to work with top experts to explore solutions for Long Island, taking part in some of the

Mr. Monti spoke to students about the importance of becoming leaders and being active in building the social and economic future of Long Island through investment in Smart Growth-type planning, as well as building communities that will allow for economic growth and environmental preservation.

The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook is proud to announce a special partnership with Emma S. Clark Memorial Library in Setauket. On Wednesday, April 17th, Carolyn Emerson and Deidre Doran, Reference Librarians at Emma S. Clark will present a book discussion at the museum on Strapless: John Singer Sargent and the Fall of Madame X by Deborah Davis, following a gallery tour of the exhibition, An Artful Life: The Baker/ Pisano Collection of 19th Century American Art, on display in the Art Museum through Memorial Day. As a result of cross promotional efforts by library and museum staff, several people have registered for the program and there is a long waiting list, according to Emerson.

“I think that bodes well for future programs,” she commented.

In describing the partnership, Emerson

added, “the library is no longer just a physical space; it is, increasingly, a virtual presence existing outside of the building’s walls. This has led us to broaden our thinking about the library’s role.

Therefore, we are seeking to become more of a presence in other venues in the community and to collaborate more with other institutions.”

The partnership with Emma S. Clark is just one example of how the Long Island Museum has successfully engaged Long Island’s libraries. In 2008, the museum began offering a Library Partner Membership for $300 to any library wishing to enroll. The membership card, to be circulated to library patrons, includes free unlimited general museum admission.

The membership is good for one year and entitles the card holder to discounts on museum merchandise, special rates on the museum’s

facility rental program and one courtesy guest lecture staff member at the library by a museum staff member. Currently, 16 libraries in Nassau and Suffolk Counties are active museum members.

Although the April 17 program is full, anyone interesting in signing up for the waiting list is encouraged to call the library at 631.941.4080, extension 115.

Copies of Deborah Davis’s book, Strapless, are available to check out but people are asked to call first for availability.

Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian affiliate, dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection.

Sunrise Toyota announced today that it will be sponsoring A Night of Song and Dance at The Gateway Playhouse on Sunday, April 28th. The benefit event will consist of a buffet and silent auction at 5 p.m., followed by a dance performance at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds go to a local Long Island family in need.

Deb Cordaro’s on-going battle with cancer has been causing financial stress for her and her family of Ridge. When Jimmy Berg,

owner of Sunrise Toyota heard of the Cordaro’s situation, he immediately wanted to help the family.

In addition to sponsoring the benefit, Berg agreed to donate a loaner vehicle from Sunrise Toyota, which was picked up Saturday the 23rd, so the family could take advantage of a timeshare they received for this week’s Spring Break in Florida.

While the family is on their “Sunrise Voyage,” Berg is also donating a

portion of every vehicle sold at Sunrise Toyota to the family to help offset the cost of medical treatment.

The Cordaro’s “Sunrise Voyage” will be featured on Sunrise Toyota’s Facebook page, so everyone can experience the voyage.

The BC Calculus students worked to discover a formula that related Pi to the probability of a toothpick crossing a line. Together, students were able to come up with intervals that estimated the value of Pi. W.S. Mount Elementary School’s fifth-grade enrichment class (coincidentally called Pi) celebrated the irrational number sequence through a series of activities. The students took measurements of the circumference and diameter of various cylindrical containers to discover that the ratio of

circumference to diameter was equivalent to Pi. The students also figured out that a person’s hat size is the circumference of their head in inches divided by Pi, and, using an online search engine, discovered the number sequence that makes up their birthdate within the infinite numbers after the decimal in Pi. Both the high school and fifth-grade students concluded their celebrations with Pithemed snacks. Mount students had gluten-free cupcakes donated by a parent decorated with the digits of Pi, and the high school dished out pieces of different pies.

In celebration of the widely recognized Pi Day, Three Village Central School District students marked the school day with math-themed activities.

Advanced Placement Statistics and BC Calculus students at Ward Melville High School participated in an experiment designed to estimate the value of Pi by conducting a simulation known as Buffon’s Needle Problem. The original question, posed by Comte de Buffon in the 18th century, tried to determine the probability of a needle, when dropped, crossing two parallel strips of wood making up a floor. The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. (APDA) is hard at work in Suffolk County helping to Ease The Burden And Find The Cure. Founded more than 51 years ago, the APDA continues to help those affected by this disease.

The American Parkinson Disease Association Information & Referral Center of Suffolk County offers support groups, educational events, literature and referrals to those afflicted with Parkinson Disease.

“Parkinson Disease can be devastating to those who are afflicted and their families” says Julie Garofalo, R.N., Coordinator for the APDA Information & Referral Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. “There has been extensive research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical treatments to help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure.” More research is needed, she said.

Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can include a decrease in spontaneous movement,

How many songs do you have on your iPod? Do you even listen to half of them?

And what about that CD collection? Is it gathering dust on some rack or – better yet – packed away in a box with all the other electronics of yesteryear? You know, next to the famous 8-tracks, cassettes, VHS tapes and vinyl that everyone seems in such a rush to get rid of.

Personally, I will never discard my CD collection.

In fact, while in the process of shopping for a TV stand/ entertainment center, one of my main criteria was finding a piece with enough shelving to accommodate

my massive music collection.

Sure, most of my favorite songs are already stored on my computer, my iPod, my iPhone…but still, there’s nothing quite like putting on a CD and listening to the tracks in sequence – back when an album was an entire concept, rather than a string of hit singles thrown together.

I can understand the attachment people have to their records – to anything that encapsulates a moment in time in their respective lives, really.

I have a hard time throwing anything out – mostly for sentimental reasons – hence the massive collection of CDs… and books…and videos… and knick-knacks. Sure, some are obsolete and serve no real

purpose – but they’re mine.

They each have a story and a memory associated with them and, even if I’ve outgrown the need to display certain mementos, you can bet they will be carefully packed away in a box sooner than kicked to the curb.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m by no means a hoarder, nor will you ever see three quarters of the things I have meticulously catalogued and saved through the years out in the open – as long as they are stored away for safe-keeping, ready to reminisce over whenever the moment strikes.

As for my CDs, I just can’t bear to put them away in a box. Not yet. Good thing my wall unit has shelves.

Shamrock Celebration

Dressed in emerald green – and in the spirit of all things Irish – Rocky Point’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School held its annual Senior Citizen St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast.

Served by the fifth-grade Student Council, which is advised by Mark Yashowitz, the attending seniors enjoyed a complimentary breakfast and warm beverages with the help of the parent-volunteers in attendance.

Throughout the program, the audience was entertained by the

fifth-grade Select Chorus “High Notes,” led by music teacher Craig Knapp, who performed a number of St. Patrick’s Day-inspired songs. From classics like Danny Boy to clever tunes such as Michael Finnigan, the crowd was impressed with the students’ collective musical talents.

In addition to the student pieces that highlighted several vocal soloists and High Notes guest conductors, audience members also had the chance to learn a partner dance with the help of the

Working To Keep The Beach Clean

Eleven members of the Port Jefferson Middle School Environmental Club attended the Coastal Steward Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup of the eastern side of Port Jefferson Harbor.

The event, sponsored by the Village of Belle Terre, is part of the International Coastal Cleanup effort that has removed more than 320 tons of debris to date.

Kaming-Thomassi, Patrick Kleaka, Matt Luca, Abbie Murphy, Matt Murphy, Michael Smith and Jordan Suarez, along with parent Kevin Kleaka and club adviser Peter Burawa, were provided with water, garbage bags, gloves, sun block and snacks for the day’s work.

“The students scoured the beach and adjoining upland, pulling and carrying the flotsam and jetsam from the area,” said

Burawa. “Plastic bags and wrappers were the most time-consuming to clean up, as they would wrap around trees and branches, some of which had thorns.”

After five hours of hard work, nearly three tons of debris had been collected. The students are making plans to join Coastal Steward on future cleanups and helping with the program’s oyster restoration project.

Members of the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School student government, led by advisers Dana St. Pierre and Michele Smith, hosted a food collection to benefit the Outreach program at Infant Jesus R.C. Church.

The student leaders did their best to make a difference in the local community by collecting nonperishable food items

as well as toiletries to help keep the food pantry’s shelves stocked.

“Our mission is to try and make a difference around us in any way we can, starting with our small ‘world’ – meaning what occurs in and around our school,” said Smith.

“We also want to make a difference in the bigger ‘world,’ the community we live in, and lastly, the

entire world around us.”

This year’s food drive correlated with the school’s Scraggy Olympics, an event where teachers and parents compete in sports and games. The student government asked attendees to donate nonperishable items and drop them in collection bags for the team they were supporting.

National Walking Day In celebration of National Walking Day, on Wednesday, April 3rd, the American Heart Association is encouraging Americans to get fit and have fun by launching Show Us Your Moves.

The month-long Instagram promotion encourages consumers to submit photos of their

favorite fun physical activity – dancing, roller skating, walking with friends, gardening – you name it! Selected photos will be featured each week on www.heart.org and various American Heart Association social media pages. By sharing pictures of their physical activity on Instagram with the hashtag

#mymoves, consumers can help spread the notion that exercise can be fun.

The program requires each school and district to detail funding, staffing, commitment to standards

and access to music instruction.

“Our music program is one that provides students with a wide variety of programs, performances and courses, as well as the high school’s chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society,” said Caravello. “In addition,” he continued, “Port Jefferson Village offers unique opportunities for students to perform at and attend historic venues, theaters and other village centers during the many music and art festivals scheduled throughout the year. Our students’ musical endeavors have always been welcomed and supported by the larger Ward Melville High community.”

School senior Maria Scutari combined her love for music with her technological and scientific prowess to design and create a pendant ocarina using the technology department’s Inventor software and the school’s 3-D printer. The ocarina is a small wind instrument in the genre of vessel flutes that typically is formed by an enclosed space with four to 12 finger holes and a mouthpiece that projects from the body.

Under the direction of technology teacher John Williams and members of the school’s physics department, and in consultation with Dr. Thomas Butcher, mechanical engineer and head of the Energy Resources Division at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Maria created the instrument in part based on specific calculations and three participated in she determined using the “Jump Rope” program, the Helmholtz Resonator while fourth- and fifth- formula and her knowledge graders participated in the of the instrument itself.

Heart Healthy

Students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District jumped to their feet and scored a winning basket in the fight against heart disease and stroke during their annual Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart programs.

The event, a collaborative effort between the Parent Teacher Association and the physical education department, raised $6,000

for the American Heart Association.

“The kids love it and it’s a lot of fun for everyone,” said Edna Louise physical education instructor Françoise Schachner, who has been participating in the program since joining the district in 2001. “The district has been a supporter of this organization and event for decades.”

Ultimately she discovered that she needed to abandon the use of the Helmholtz formula because of her specific design. “Instead I decided that I would measure all of the variables of a real-life ocarina,” she explained, “and see if I could create a playable instrument based on what I learned from researching how ocarinas worked and using a 3-D printer.” Using a ruler, Maria measured the area of the finger holes, the sound hole, and the length, width and height of the windway, and used a graduated cylinder to measure the volume. “The fact that it plays tells me that what I understood about how the instrument works is true,” she commented. “Although, the end product didn’t play the note that I expected – it was two half-steps below what I anticipated.”

While the work to create the product spanned the technology and science departments, the finished piece was used as her endof-quarter project in her Advanced Placement Music Theory class, taught by Dr. Daniel Deutsch.

As for her future work, Maria noted, “I plan on continuing to improve

So even if the calculations are a little off, you will still be able to use the tuning shaft to account for the error and correct the pitch.”

Upon graduating this June, Maria will be attending Stony Brook University, where she plans to study mechanical engineering.

Perks Of Tweeting An Author

As part of the Contemporary Issues In Literature class, Ward Melville High School students are able to delve into various literary works on deep and thoughtprovoking levels during the span of the half-year course. From best-sellers to newly released books, the course curriculum generally covers four to five books and following the study of each the students complete reflective projects, including writing and artistic pieces.

Perhaps more significant than the assignments completed in the class are the connections that the students regularly have with the books they are reading. Class teacher Terri Etheridge noted that over the seven-year run of the program, countless students have made personal connections

to the pieces read; only recently, however, did that connection result in a memorable interaction with one of the authors.

Following their study of the widely famous “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” senior Emma Lemanski tweeted author Stephen Chbosky via the social networking site Twitter to thank him for his captivating story, and to her surprise was retweeted by Mr. Chbosky only moments later.

“I had never connected with a story like this before,” stated Emma, who went on to note that she never expected to hear from Mr. Chbosky but felt compelled to thank him for writing such a rich story. “One of the main characters really spoke to me on a personal level, so making the connection to the author was a really

amazing experience.”

After the initial Twitter connection with Emma, Mr. Chbosky reached out to Ms. Etheridge directly to learn more about the class’ work with the book and to thank her for making it a part of the curriculum.

When completed, Ms. Etheridge will be sending Mr. Chbosky copies of the class’ projects in an effort to further demonstrate the ways in which it has inspired them, and in hopes that future connections with him will be possible.

“Each year, the students really embrace this book,” said Ms. Etheridge. “It is the type of book that even my more reluctant readers are captivated by, so having the author take an interest in their work was truly exciting for the whole class.”

Becoming Published Authors Fifteen R.C. Murphy Junior High School seventh-graders from Catherine Duffy’s English class will become published authors in late April, as their innovative work will be included in the Kidsday section of Long Island’s Newsday.

For their contributions, the students have been working with Ms. Duffy

on several original articles and were afforded the chance to polish their interviewing skills when they met with several locally and nationally recognized celebrities.

The students’ April 28th debut will feature an interview with Carly Rose Sonenclar, last year’s runner-up in the “X Factor” competition,

and a behind-the-scenes look at the WBLI Morning Show and the Broadway show “Matilda.” Additional pieces will feature the school’s Cabaret Night, See-Port Deli’s locally famous Boone Sandwich, reviews on several books and movies, and much more.

Reich’s main message, “just people are just people,” affirmed that the average person can save a life simply by speaking up. He urged listeners to follow four simple steps when faced with an adversity: judge the situation, understand the problem, solve and take action, creating the acronym JUST. “Indifference kills,” stated Reich. “Do

not tolerate bullies or allow them to silence you.”

At the assembly’s conclusion, Port Jefferson Middle School Principal Antonio Santana echoed Reich’s sentiments, saying, “It’s not enough to just be a good person. Our differences do not give us the right to treat people differently; they are there for us to embrace because they are what enrich our lives.”

Port Jefferson Middle School students in Kayleen Moran’s eighth-grade English class and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students in Philip Giannusa’s Holocaust elective course came together this month for a two-part, in-depth look at the Holocaust. The two teachers collaborated to produce an interdisciplinary unit that explored and explained the distressing World War II event.

On March 22nd, Holocaust survivor Werner Reich spoke to Port Jefferson School District students, faculty, staff and administration during an unforgettable presentation about his life, the Holocaust and what it means to be a just person.

Reich began the assembly by defining the Holocaust and what he describes as “the good people who did nothing” throughout time, referring to the individuals, political leaders and countries that knew of the atrocities that were happening but did little or nothing to help those suffering.

He stressed the importance of defending personal beliefs, helping those in need and acting on what you know is right.

“Don’t wait for other people to act – be the first,” said Reich. “Ask yourself what the right thing to do in a situation is and then do it.”

The presentation outlined Reich’s personal experience as a teenager who survived the Terezín, Auschwitz IIBirkenau and Auschwitz I concentration camps. “I am lucky to have survived,” he said. “It is my responsibility to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.”

studying Eliezer Wiesel’s Holocaust novel “Night,” were given a guided tour through a Holocaust museum in the middle school/high school library that was created and constructed by students in Giannusa’s class.

“The concept of genocide is almost unfathomable to the students,” said Moran. “Phil and I are using this as an opportunity to break it down so that it better relates to everyday situations.”

A poster exhibition of WWII images lined the staircase leading to the museum, helping visitors to attain the proper mindset before entering and providing a visualization of the facts and statistics that were being read to them throughout the program by the upperclassmen, who acted as tour guides.

Inside, black drapes, candles, low lighting and opera music contributed to the museum’s setting, lending a serious yet respectful tone. Viewers were walked through stations detailing life in the concentration camps, the widespread Nazi destruction, survival and Hitler’s Final Solution, the most deadly phase of the Holocaust.

The driving message throughout the presentation likened acts such as bullying and oppression to the Nazis’ means of wiping people of their individuality and identity through acts of humiliation and stereotyping.

At the conclusion of their tour, students filled out pledge cards describing their personal vows to fight against genocide.

Green At The Game Farm

Port Jefferson Middle School student-musician Mayu Takeuchi has recently been named a recipient of the Suffolk County Music Educators Association Burnhart Rydzeski Scholarship, one of two New York State Music Festival at SUNY Oneonta scholarships.

The gifted sixth-grader will receive full tuition to attend the New York State Summer Music Festival, a six-week program that challenges its students to achieve the highest levels of musicianship.

Mayu, who has been playing the violin since the first grade, says she is looking forward to making new friends through music at the camp this summer.

Extending their long and well-earned reputation for scientific excellence, Science Olympiad teams from both P.J. Gelinas and R.C. Murphy junior high schools in the Three Village Central School District will be advancing to the coveted state level of the Science Olympiad competition in Syracuse this April. The two teams dominated the competition at the Eastern Long Island Regional Tournament held in midMarch at Candlewood Middle School, where Gelinas placed first and Murphy second out of 36 teams, earning them both a spot in the next round of the contest.

“It is a privilege for me to work with such talented, motivated and enthusiastic students in the Science Olympiad program,” stated Gary Vorwald, Gelinas team coach. “One of the reasons for our success is the amount of time that these students devote to preparing for the tournaments, and their dedication to each other.

Our more experienced members mentor their

newer teammates and even our alumni come back from the high school to help mentor our team. The students come to practice during vacations and on Saturdays to improve their skills. This dedication and work ethic, as well as holding high standards, has helped Gelinas achieve such success.”

Both junior high schools entered the competition, with more than 70 student participants comprising a total of eight teams. During the contest, the students competed in a range of 16 events spanning such science topics as anatomy, crime busters, and rocks and minerals.

With a record-breaking low score of 35, Gelinas’ ‘varsity’ team placed first in the contest. Rounding out the competition, the remainder of Gelinas’ teams placed third, fourth, fifth and sixth, while Murphy’s teams placed second, seventh and 10th.

In total, the Three Village teams were ranked in eight of the top 10 team slots.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the students’ hard work

and determination,” stated Sue McGuire, who along with Derek Angermaier and Jackie Stigert coaches the Murphy students. “They have put a tremendous amount of time and energy into their studies and are much deserving of the recognition they have received.”

Gelinas’ team has been ranked state champions four times (2006-2008 and in 2010) and qualified for the national competition in 2003 and each year from 2005-2012. Murphy has advanced to the state competition the last seven years and has ranked among the top three teams the last five years at states.

The focus of the Science Olympiads is to promote excitement and enthusiasm in science through annual regional, state and national competitions.

Frequently, preparation for these events provides enrichment well beyond the traditional science curriculum.

Students work cooperatively with their peers while learning science technology skills.

Neighbor Pet’s Place

National Pet Day In honor of our nation’s love of pets, April 11th has been named National Pet Day. While more than 60 percent of households have pets, Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. wants the public to realize how many millions of other companion animals are still homeless in shelters across the country.

“It’s wonderful to have a nationally recognized day in honor of our pets,” says Save-A-Pet Founder/ President Dori Scofield.

“But the sad truth is that so many pets are still suffering and in dire need of a home and loving family. This National Pet Day, we want the public to not only think about their own pets, but consider what they can do to help orphaned companion animals housed in shelters across the country.”

To that end, Save-A-Pet and its staff recommends

adopting a rescued pet from a shelter, as opposed to purchasing one from a store or a breeder. Another way to show your support is to make a donation or volunteer at a shelter in your area.

“While Save-A-Pet is a no-kill shelter, more than three million dogs and cats are euthanized every year because the shelters are overcrowded,” continued Ms. Scofield. “There are so many irresponsible breeders and puppy mills across the country.

By adopting a pet, rather than purchasing one, you are helping to save lives.”

Every year, more than seven million pets are surrendered to shelters across the nation. This past year, due to the current economic climate and the effects of Hurricane Sandy, Save-A-Pet has taken in more animals than ever

before, as their owners can no longer afford to care for them.

“It’s heartbreaking,” says Ms. Scofield. “So many of the dogs and cats in our shelter were someone’s pet. They are used to that lifestyle and it’s hard for them to adjust to shelter life. We have so many wonderful dogs and cats that are available for adoption that would make terrific pets, because they were terrific pets.”

From Thursday, April 25th through Sunday, April 28th, the Long Island Museum will celebrate the Grand Opening of its newly renovated carriage galleries, Streets Of New York And Carriages for Sport And Pleasure.

Members of the North Suffolk and Three Village Garden Clubs will design carriage inspired flower arrangements, to be displayed alongside the vehicles through the weekend.

Visitors will enjoy twofor-one admission on Sunday, April 28th and special Grand Opening activities including a lecture on the horse and carriage era in New York City, a performance by the Stony Brook University music department and a panel discussion on how the project came together, from concept to completion.

The new carriage galleries, focusing on 19th century urban transportation and recreational driving, complete the decade long reinstallation and reinterpretation of the Carriage Museum.

Visitors will explore how horse-drawn vehicles were essential to the growth of cities as centers for living and working, and critical

to the growth of the United States as a major economic power.

The Streets of New York gallery will feature floor-to-ceiling blowup photographs of actual city streets of around 1900, plus a dramatic fire scene simulating a burning building with horse-drawn fire engines outside, and a section demonstrating road surfaces (brick, woodblock, cobblestone) in the carriage-era city. The gallery will also include historic film footage from the Library of Congress’s Edison film archives.

Shot on city streets, the films give a vivid picture of chaotic and turbulent urban roadways at the turn of the century. Carriages for Sport and Pleasure will focus on carriage driving for the rich and status-conscious, with the centerpiece the recently acquired Tally Ho, the

imported English carriage that started the 19th century carriage driving craze among the upper crust.

Along with the renovated galleries, the museum will offer audio narration.

Visitors will be able to hear voices of 19th century New Yorkers and the tour will be available as a download on the museum’s web site.

Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian affiliate, dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection.
