The show was wonderful, and the talented students put on a show that brought the appreciative crowd to its feet at its conclusion. Last season’s event at the Islanders game was a huge success in raising awareness and funds for NCMEC. I plan on putting my undefeated record on the line and seeing another big Islanders victory, both on and off the ice.”

The mission of NCMEC is to combat the issue of missing and sexually exploited children and the significance of this should not be lost. An estimated 800,000 children are reported missing each year and children are sexually victimized every day with most of these children never disclosing the abuse to anyone. Clearly, this is a growing issue that needs additional attention.

“It is crucial that we do everything possible to make sure our children are safe,” Islanders Owner Charles Wang said. “The fans who came and supported The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children last season were incredible.

The donations that were received and the awareness that was raised have gone a long way towards ensuring our children, our future, remain the most important treasure in our lives. I look forward to supporting this important organization in front of a sold out Nassau Coliseum crowd.”

NCMEC mascot, “Clicky,” will join Islanders mascot Sparky the Dragon for the entire game. The two characters will help staff members collect donations and distribute safety information on the concourse. To generate added awareness, the center-ice video board will run numerous facts and public service announcements throughout the evening.

DeMarco and members of the Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force conducted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new home designated for homeless youth who will transition from a special rehabilitative program at the Riverhead

Correctional Facility.

Youth placed in the home will be engaged in a new initiative at Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch called The Right Path.

The collaboration represents one of the most innovative jailto-community antirecidivism efforts in the nation.

The New York Islanders are partnering with The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) for the second straight season with the goal of raising funds and awareness for the organization.

The event will take place on Thursday, March 7th, when the team takes on the New York Rangers at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum at 7 p.m. For each ticket sold, $2 will go directly to the NCMEC. Islanders Owner Charles Wang has generously committed to personally matching the total from the $2 ticket donation, 50/50 raffle and Chuck-A-Puck.

Co-founder of NCMEC and host of America’s Most Wanted, John Walsh will attend the game and drop the ceremonial puck.

During the March 7th game, the Islanders will hold a variety of fundraising activities, such as the Chuck-A-Puck intermission contest and the 50/50 raffle. Collection tables will line the concourse level to accept

the devastation first hand, and have already started the clean-up process, removing large lumber, pilings, propane tanks, damaged docks and dock Styrofoam - all from just the local waterways. The amount of debris resting on our bay islands for this year’s clean-up, OpSPLASH23, will be more of a challenge, and greater assistance is welcome.

“The bad news is that Super Storm Sandy has undone most of the great work our volunteers have done over the last 22 years,” said Rob Weltner, President of Operation SPLASH. He continued, “The good news is, we Long Islanders love our bays and beaches and will rise to the challenge before us, and make them pristine again.”

To volunteer, please gather at the old Freeport Museum, 202 Woodcleft Avenue in Freeport at 9 a.m. on March 16th (rain date March 17th).

Volunteers should dress for the weather of the day. Waterproof boots and work gloves are strongly suggested. For safety reasons, no sneakers are allowed. Children must be at least 12 years old to participate and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

On Saturday, March 16th, volunteers from Freeport’s Operation SPLASH will board boats and head out on our South Shore bays, to battle the debris and destruction that Super Storm Sandy left behind. A SPLASH armada of a dozen boats will ferry volunteers to remote islands as they donate their morning to help clean up the local bays. With the enormous amount of debris this year, many more volunteers and monetary donations are needed.

Last year, in three hours, a record 350 volunteers filled a 42 foot long barge six feet deep with shoreline trash. Volunteer Captain Joseph Pignataro reported that his crew hauled back a bathtub, half a boat, a broken jet ski, a lot of lumber, tires and at least 50 bags of trash. This year the amount to be picked up is even more staggering.

The Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps (SBVAC), a 90-member all-volunteer student-led emergency response unit, was honored as the Collegiate EMS Organization of the Year for 2012-2013 at the 20th Annual National Collegiate EMS Foundation (NCEMSF) conference held in Washington, DC, from February 22nd-24th, 2013.

SBVAC was selected from more than 100 collegiate EMS organizations across the nation.

Founded in 1970 by a small group of university students, SBVAC is a New York State-certified ambulance corps that has grown into a collegiate EMS agency that provides one of the highest standards of emergency response care in the state. SBVAC primarily serves the Stony Brook University campus and

is regularly utilized as an EMS resource for the surrounding communities.

SBVAC services an average daily population in excess of 30,000 people, including more than 8,000 campus residents. They responded to nearly 1,300 calls last year. “We’re very excited about the award,� said Frankie Rivera, SBVAC President, and a Stony Brook University senior double-majoring in sociology and women’s studies. “This award is timely and well deserved for our members who have answered numerous calls throughout very challenging times this past fall and winter,� he said, referencing Superstorm Sandy and Winterstorm Nemo, two severe weather events that have pounded the region. “It’s great for SBVAC and the campus community, as national recognition helps to get

our name out to the EMS world on a larger scale.�

Former SBVAC Chief (2000-02) and Stony Brook alumnus (’02) Joshua Moskovitz, MD, MPH, was also recognized at the NCEMSF conference receiving the President George J. Koenig Jr., DO, Service Award. Dr. Moskovitz is currently an Emergency Medicine physician at North Shore University Hospital.

Previously, SBVAC received the “Striving for Excellence� Award at the 2001 NCEMSF annual conference; the Suffolk County EMS Agency of the Year Award (2002); the New York State EMS Agency of the Year Award (2003) by the New York State Department of Health’s Bureau of Emergency Services; and a first-place finish at the 2011 NCEMSF Advanced Life Support Skills Competition.

Hands On Approach Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Advanced Placement Biology students recently put their scientific knowledge into action during a class trip to the Biotechnology Teaching Laboratory at the Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CESAME) at Stony Brook University. There they participated in two handson labs that required students to utilize their observational, analytical and scientific engineering skills.

“In the bacterial

transformation lab, the students inserted a plasmid, a small piece of DNA, that contained a gene for antibiotic resistance and a jellyfish gene for florescence into E. coli bacteria,” said teacher Laurie McMillen. “The bacteria glowed when viewed under a black light, which proved that the students had successfully inserted the plasmid into the bacteria.” Students were directly involved in the experimental design and the designation of controls.

The student-scientists also participated in a restriction enzyme analysis lab in which they tested and evaluated four factors that can affect the function of restriction enzymes. The procedures included the use of agarose gel electrophoresis and restriction enzymes’ (EcoRI, HinDIII and BamHI) digestion of DNA. A presentation of results to classmates helped participants compare experiences and results.

Of Keynotes & Conquering Fears By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Giant sigh of relief. I did it. I delivered a 20 minute (well, more like 10-minute) keynote address in front of roughly 100 high school journalism students and former professors. And I survived.

What’s the big deal, you ask?

Given that my profession consists mainly of the written word, the spoken word has always presented a bit of a problem for me. It’s not so much a weak point as a giant source of anxiety. Give me something to read, and I’m probably going to race through it and a relatively low volume, barely glancing up. All words will be pronounced correctly, with proper inflection and expression, but it will be over before you know it – and there had better be a powerful microphone handy. Ask me to ad lib and simply speak off the top of my head in front of a group of people – be it 3 or 3,000 – and, well, let’s just say most people know not to even ask.

Granted, I have gotten much better at this. Back in high school, I used to dread the words “Oral

Presentation” on any syllabus, and would work myself up into a frenzy of sorts in the days and hours leading up to said presentation. Usually, it came off fairly well; but there were definitely a handful of occasions when my ill-advised attempts to toss the notecards and “wing it” went awry. Suddenly, I would lose all track of what I was saying, where I was going with my “point” (more like tangent) and how on earth to get back on track. Of course, seeing dozens of your fellow classmates staring blankly back at you never helped the situation either.

Being a Journalism major in college, I’m sure you can all imagine how thrilled I was to learn that public speaking would be a large part of the curriculum.

There was even an entire Oral Communication course I was required to take…what luck! All joking aside, I did learn to slow it down a bit, enunciate, project, make eye contact (well, occasionally anyway) and – dare I say it – even to ad lib a bit from time to time. Not too much. Just enough.

When I was first asked to deliver the keynote for the LIU Post Media Arts Best Of High School Journalism Awards, all those nerves came flooding back. Memories of my valedictory address in high school, complete with my Guidance Counselor asking, “Um, Jamie? Do you need gum or a mint or something? You look like you’re going to be sick…” just prior to my getting ready to go on stage seemed fresh.

But that was almost thirteen years ago. A lot has changed. People grow.

They overcome their fears. Those once-impossible tasks seem suddenly attainable. In fact, that was the overall reaction of the high school students to my keynote address – Wow, we can do this too. She was just like us, and look what she’s achieved… The dream can become a reality.

That, I think, was the greatest compliment anyone could hope to receive. If, by getting over my fear of public speaking and being able to convey my message, I was able to influence even one high school student to pursue his/her dream of becoming a journalist… well, that’s the biggest reward of all.

SOUND OF MUSIC - The Comsewogue High School recently hosted a production of The Sound of Music on February 12th, at the school’s auditorium. The show was wonderful, and the talented students put on a show that brought the appreciative crowd to its feet at its conclusion. Kudos to the entire cast, the band, teachers, members of the Board of Education, Superintendent Dr. Joseph V. Rella, and especially the show’s Director, Mrs. Charlotte Johnson.

Legislator Tom Muratore recently attended the Suffolk County Drug Treatment Court’s Graduation Ceremony, held at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip.

Drug Treatment Court is a specialized part of the Suffolk County District and County Criminal Courts. It is offered to those who have a drug and/or alcohol addiction, and have been arrested on

misdemeanor or felony charges. The program’s goal is to bring effective intervention to individuals caught within the cycle of substance abuse and crime.

One of the requirements includes appearing before the Presiding Judge while following their individual treatment plan.

“I was happy to attend the Drug Court Graduation again,” stated Legislator Muratore. “With

drug addiction and drugrelated crimes at an alltime high, it is important to encourage and support the individuals who have persevered through this difficult program to turn their lives around.”

Under the direction of Rachel Breslin, Day Treatment Activities Supervisor at UCP, the group has been practicing together each week for over a year. To date, they have mastered 50 adult songs and 25 children’s songs.

“The group’s first performance to the community was last year’s MLK event,” said Breslin.

“Since then, they have become true entertainers with over 25 performances behind them and are booked for six performances in the community in the coming months.”

In addition to performing, the group explores proper breathing techniques, the benefits of movement, and

the importance of being healthy.

They discuss self advocacy and the significance of advocating for themselves and other individuals with disabilities.

According to Breslin, “The rehearsals have become quite a social event. The group learns new tunes and practices mastered songs.

They also create their own sets and in some cases design their own costumes.

Each person gets to see how they can contribute to the success of the group.

Ultimately, all of these activities help to build self esteem, foster a sense of community, and make for one terrific show!”

More than 900 people from across Long Island joined a “movement” on Wednesday, February 13th, by attending the hugely successful American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon at The Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement encouraged everyone in attendance to “Make It Our Mission” to help save lives and take charge of their cardiovascular health and share the life-altering and life-saving information of

the day with women they know.

Recognizing that the health effects of Hurricane Sandy are still being felt by those living in storm-ravaged areas such as Long Beach and Lindenhurst, Long Island, and Broad Channel, Queens, the North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today that its mobile medical van will continue visiting those communities through August, thanks to a $350,000 grant from the Robin Hood Relief Fund.

“We are proud to continue the work of our mobile medical van with the generous support of the Robin Hood Foundation, said Ira Nash, MD, medical director of the North Shore-LIJ Medical Group, which has been coordinating the health system’s mobile van efforts, called Project Coastal Care, since last November. “We have already touched the lives of hundreds of people in the areas stricken by Hurricane Sandy, and look forward to being able to help provide basic medical services as these communities rebuild.”

The North ShoreLIJ medical mobile van provides free medical evaluations by North Shore - LIJ doctors and nurses, primary and urgent care services, blood pressure checks, diabetes evaluation, prescription refills, flu shots (while available) and tetanus shots. Staff is also available to respond to medical questions and concerns of local residents, and offer medical advice.

Beginning Monday, February 25th, and every Monday for the next six months, the medical van will be in Lindenhurst, at Shore Park from 12 to 6 p.m. On Tuesdays, it will be stationed in Long Beach at 225 W. Park Avenue from 12 to 3 p.m. and on National Blvd from 3 to 6 p.m. On Wednesdays, the van will

be in Broad Channel in Queens, at the American Legion from 12 to 6 p.m.

On Thursdays, the van will be in Long Beach at 175 W. Broadway from 12 to 3 p.m. and at 35 East Broadway from 3 to

6 p.m., and on Saturdays, it will be in Long Beach, at Waldbaums in Kennedy Plaza from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Sensational Signers, a group of 20 individuals with disabilities from the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk (UCP) Adult Day Services program and Mill Neck Services, recently performed at the annual Martin Luther King Celebration held at the Long Island Developmental Disabilities Regional Office in Brentwood.

The group sang three songs, interpreted songs into sign language, and danced into the hearts of the audience. Over 100 people attended the performance and the audience response was enthusiastic.

SUNY Stony Brook undergraduate percussion instructor James Beauton visited students in the Port Jefferson School District this week to teach about various percussion instruments and the methods behind playing them. Beauton, who began his teaching career at the age of 17, reached out to the district in a personal effort to cultivate more interest in music among students.

“High school was the time in which I was most influenced by music, so I feel like it’s only appropriate to talk about

it with students this age,” said Beauton. “I like what I do, and I have the resources and the time, so it’s perfect.”

During his visit, Beauton discussed and performed improvised, partially improvised and composed music, demonstrating their differences on the drum, snare drum, marimba and shekere, an African rattle. Perhaps the most impressive part of the lesson was his passionate performance of “Prim,” a piece composed for the snare drum by leading Icelandic composer Áskell Másson.

“Music is such a great way to express your feelings,” said Beauton. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with your instruments and explore different types of music. Find out what music can do for you.” He continued by emphasizing the importance of studying music theory and maintaining persistence throughout the learning process. “If you want to become better at what you’re doing, ask someone for help and don’t give up, even if things become difficult. Always be a student. Always be open to trying new things.”

For the second year in a row, Setauket Elementary School’s advanced band, under the direction of Rich Wiederman, has been chosen for an honor generally reserved for high school or collegelevel bands – the chance to perform The StarSpangled Banner at the opening of a New York Mets baseball game. The close-to-100-member band will take to the baseball diamond at Citi Field on Sunday, June 16th, during a home game against the

Chicago Cubs.

For its debut last spring, the band was selected for this coveted honor based on a rigorous selection process, which included a recording of the students performing. “I was very pleasantly surprised to have the band selected last year, and to have the honor for a second time is just amazing,” stated Mr. Wiederman, who noted that following last year’s performance, he was contacted by the Mets organization to

schedule the band’s repeat performance. “They noted how impressed they were with the students and not only graciously extended an invitation to us to perform again, but also waived the audition process based on our track record.”

The students’ performance will come just a week shy of the end of the school year, enabling many of the graduating band members to end their elementary music careers on a high note.

“We Are All Crayons,” first-graders performed “Teaching Peace,” sixthgrade students from Ms. Larsen’s class shared an Indian folk tale they had studied as part of their Reader’s Theater work, and select students showcased their talents on the Chinese yoyo and with an Indian fashion show and a Bollywood dance.

In the school’s mini-gym, visitors had the chance to sign in at “Ellis Island,” visit different stations displaying facts and pieces from difference countries and create a square for the school’s paper “Children Have a Culture All Their Own” quilt, a project coordinated by Nassakeag’s student council. Students also visited Ancestry.com to research their own family history.

Third Place At Nationals Having made a national name for themselves over the past several years, Rocky Point High School’s varsity cheerleading squad continued the Eagle tradition this February during the most prestigious and competitive cheerleading competition in the country – the UCA Nationals in Orlando, Fla. The squad’s performance in the preliminary rounds scored them the highest amount of points out of all divisions at every venue, qualifying them to advance straight to the competition’s finals.

Rocky Point High School’s talented studentactors took to the stage this winter to perform the beloved musical Guys and Dolls before packed audiences. The students, who had only been rehearsing since January, captivated attendees in early March with their flawless renditions of the play’s many famous tunes,

including Luck Be A Lady and Sit Down, You’re Rocking The Boat, which were accompanied by the play’s predominately student-member orchestra.

Audiences sat on the edge of their seats while the comical cast of characters taught them lessons about social class and the traits needed to prevail over all

obstacles. A special free performance was held for the community’s senior citizens prior to the musical’s official debut. As the curtain closed on this year’s musical, attendees left ready to take a roll of the dice and eager to see next year’s equally captivating performance.

Rocky Point High School’s athletes consistently demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence not only on the athletic fields but also in the classroom. In recognition of this commitment, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association has presented the award of ScholarAthlete Team to four Rocky

Point winter season teams.

Spring Respite Schedule Set

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck announced that it is once again offering its spring weekend respite program, transforming the 60-plusyear-old camp into a yearround destination for children and young adults with disabilities.

Children and young adults up to the age of 21 arrive on Friday evening and leave on Sunday afternoon. There is a new theme each weekend.

“We are excited to bring back this wonderful program,” said Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. “This gives children and young adults the opportunity to be themselves, and the parents a chance to relax while their sons and daughters are being taken

care of.”

Check-in for campers is by 8 p.m. on Friday and check-out is by 3 p.m. on Sunday. Because the resources are packed away until the summer, campers are required to bring their own sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, and toiletries.

Up to 20 campers will be admitted for each weekend.

During those weekends, the camp will be staffed by five counselors and the camp nurse.

Top Cops Honored

County Executive Bellone was joined by Legislators Hahn, Calarco and Cilmi as well of SCPD Chief James Burke and Sheriff Vincent DeMarco to honor twenty four Suffolk County Police Officers for making the most DWI arrests in Suffolk County.

The prestigious ceremony, held at the Suffolk County Police Academy, honored all the officers and awarded one sheriff with the Top Cop award after making 108 arrests this year.

“These officers have saved hundreds of lives by making DWI a priority and arresting those individuals who make the irresponsible decision to drive drunk,” said County Executive Bellone. “Suffolk County police agencies made over 5,100 arrests in 2012 and more than 15,000 DWI arrests in the past 3 years.

Suffolk County will not tolerate drunk driving on

our roadways. We remain committed to arresting anyone who chooses to drink and then get behind the wheel of a car, endangering the lives of others.”

The Special Traffic Options Program for Driving While Intoxicated (STOP-DWI) is a comprehensive program specifically designed to reduce the incidence of alcohol-related traffic fatalities and injuries in New York State. The program is supported by the fines collected from individuals convicted of alcohol-related traffic infractions.
