This year, Beach Cleanup 2012 was held on Saturday, September 15th, at Robert Moses State Park, Field #2 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon.

Hundreds of volunteers combed the beaches and collected over 2000 pounds of debris. For the 26th year, Beach Cleanup 2012 was another big success!

“Thank you to everyone who came out for Beach Cleanup 2012,” Senator Johnson said. “We had a wonderful response again this year.

The collection, which ran from June 2nd to June 30th, was a huge success.

Harvest and Long Island Cares, Long Island’s leading hunger relief organizations.

Together the credit unions collected an astonishing total of 3,460 pounds of food and $31,213.21. After six years of collection, the credit unions are proud to announce that their efforts have produced $247,570.43 and 18,040 lbs. of food for Long Island’s hungry.

“The food donated by the Long Island Credit Union Cooperative has allowed us to provide 1,129 meals for families in need,” said Paule T. Pachter, Executive Director of Long Island Cares. “This is enough meals to feed a family of four for the entire summer.”

“Summer can be an extra difficult time for families who struggle to find enough to eat, since school breakfast and lunch programs are not available,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO of Island Harvest. “Thanks to the generous efforts of each credit union, food collected will help provide much needed food assistance for children and families.”

The participating credit unions included: Bethpage Federal Credit Union, The Heart Center Federal Credit Union, Island Federal Credit Union, Long Island Community Federal Credit Union, Long Island Realtors Federal Credit Union, Nassau Financial Federal Credit Union, NEFCU, North Shore LIJ Health System FCU, People’s Alliance Federal Credit Union, Sperry Federal Credit Union, Teachers Federal Credit Union, Town of Hempstead Employees Federal Credit Union, Winthrop University Hospital Employees Federal Credit Union. Men on the Move Moving & Self-Storage generously donated their services by providing collection boxes and picking up and delivering the collected food.

Long Island Cares, Inc. The Harry Chapin Food Bank is Long Island’s first

food bank, serving the hungry on Long Island since 1980. Long Island Cares brings together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry on Long Island and provides emergency food where and when it is needed, and sponsors a wide array programs and direct services that help families achieve self-sufficiency.

The organization was founded by the late singer/activist Harry Chapin in response to the immediate needs of hungry Long Islanders. It is continued by his wife and partner Sandy Chapin, a dedicated board of directors and talented staff working out of their 35,000 square foot facility in Hauppauge and storefront hunger assistance center in Freeport. Long Island Cares is a member agency of the Food Bank Association of New York State and Feeding America.

The Siri Factor

I was never an Apple person. I learned on a PC, I used them throughout my high school and college days, and I couldn’t fathom – or didn’t want to, more accurately – ever learning to use a Mac, let alone liking it.

Well, all that changed once I became introduced to the Apple world at my first office job. Now, not only do I prefer it, but I don’t even remember how to work my way around a PC. Everything seems so much easier and userfriendly that I can’t recall why, exactly, I was ever so opposed to broadening my horizons.

Now, I’m not fully indoctrinated mind you. I own an iMac, a couple of iPods and – finally, after years of carrying around an outdated, semi-obsolete “flip” phone – an iPhone 4S (iPad to follow at some point in the near future I’m sure). I have never camped out for a product, I don’t upgrade every time a new one comes out and I’m sure there are many who are far more educated when it

But still, I love Apple, especially my iPhone. To be fair, given my prior cell phone experience, just about anything short of a tin can with a string would seem like an amazing upgrade. But this truly is. And my favorite part of it all?

Why, that would be Siri.

Siri, the “Intelligent Assistant” who comes pre-installed on the iPhone 4S and 5 models… Siri, who, for all his/her (“I was not assigned a gender,” it replies when questioned) quirks and occasional glitches, has quite the personality.

Obviously, it was designed to be utilized in such a way as to make life easier by creating reminders, providing directions, weather updates and more. Not that I have used it for this purpose too often. No, I prefer to antagonize my poor little personal assistant with bizarre, out-ofleft field queries – just to see what responses I might get.

Suffolk County Community College today announced that it was among 24 SUNY community colleges to receive funds for job expansion through workforce training and local employer partnerships.

A consortium of SUNY community colleges has received $14.6 million as part of a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor and will use this funding to develop new classes and certification programs, bring new technology into labs, and expand the availability of internships and externships at local manufacturing businesses. The programs supported by these funds are designed to improve retention and achievement rates; accelerate progress and reduce time to credential completion; and provide state-of-the-art training that meets industry needs and prepares participants for entry or advancement in targeted career pathways.

The SUNY Training and Education in Advanced Manufacturing (TEAM) consortium will allow SUNY community colleges, including Suffolk County Community College, to establish permanent worker training programs for eligible New Yorkers in the field of advanced manufacturing.

Fast forward to just a little over a month ago, after Siri and I had more of an opportunity to become acquainted, and I asked, “Siri, did you know today is my birthday?” He/she/it responded, “I’m so sorry Jamie, I didn’t know. I didn’t get you anything.”

Apparently, we were now friends.

With the launch of the new iPhone and software update, Siri is now being marketed as “new and improved” and able to overcome many of the previous glitches that had previously marred its novelty. Just imagine all the fun conversations to be had now!

Most definitely an Apple person now. No going back.

Mills and Brookhaven Town Historian. “He would be happy to know that what started out as a small collection has grown into something large that can educate many,” added Russell, speaking about her father, who continued collecting medical instruments until his death in 2009.

“The medical instruments and objects exhibited are a visual presentation of the timeless challenges of treating illness and injury,” explained Carla C. Keirns, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine, and Medicine & History, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and one of the curators of the exhibit. “As a whole the objects indicate the similarities and differences in the ways doctors have treated illness and injury for more than a century.”

The exhibit features three primary glass displays.

Each display is organized by a single history of medicine theme. These themes are: Visiting Doctors, Diptheria and Whooping Cough (Pertussis), and Hazards of the Job. Dr Keirns pointed out that until the beginning of the 20th Century, health care from birth to death generally happened at home, even surgery and especially childbirth. The Visiting Doctors display features items like an umbilical scissors (circa 1940s), a metal either mask (circa late 1800s), and Dr. R. Sherman Mills’ doctor’s bag, which he used for house calls into the 1980s.

Late 19th and early 20th Century medical instruments used to treat infectious diseases and exhibited in the Diptheria and Whooping Cough display are powerful reminders of the dangers of diseases such as diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tuberculosis, and influenza a century ago.

Thousands of children died of diphtheria and pertussis each year during the early decades of the 20th Century, Tuberculosis remained the leading cause of death in the United States through the 1920s, and the influenza pandemic killed as many as 100

million people worldwide in 1918 and 1919.

The emergence of the germ theory of disease that proved microorganisms cause infectious diseases, the development of microscopes to identify and study microorganisms, and the creation of effective vaccines changed the landscape of infectious disease practice within the past century. Dr. Keirns said that these advances evolved into a new emphasis on preventing infectious diseases. Items in the display such as a diphtheria kit (circa 1920s) and a vapo-cresolene lamp (circa 1880s) used to treat whooping cough and other throat ailments are instruments no longer in use.

The Hazards of the Job display shows what tools doctors used in trauma medicine before emergency rooms and EMT teams became a routine part of medical practice during the 20th Century. On Long Island, the workplace environment in the 1800s and part of the 1900s posed serious risk for injury in

industries such ship building, maritime work, oystering and fishing, agriculture and manufacturing.

Accidents such as a fall from a horse-drawn wagon or a serious laceration to a limb at the work place often led to amputation. Dr. Keirns said that changing technologies, work patterns, and improved medical practices made loss of limbs and death from accidents much less common over time. An illustration of this progress is exhibited by a surgical saw that was used into the 1980s for amputations, in contrast with a 21st Century fixator that trauma surgeons at Stony Brook University Hospital

routinely use to save limbs.

Some items in the displays indicate the similarities of certain medical practices decades ago to today’s practices.

Objects like a reflex hammer (circa 1960s), Red Cross gauze (circa 1950s60s), and a German made blood pressure kit from World War I are nearly the same or precursors of today’s instruments used in the delivery of care.

Over the next three years, the Stony Brook University Libraries, Stony Brook Medicine, and Suffolk County Historical Society will jointly present additional themed exhibits of “Healthcare Instruments - Past and Present.”

A new exhibit at the Stony Brook University Health Sciences Library that displays medical instruments and objects from the mid-1800s to the 1980s illustrates the evolution of modern medicine.

A concept initiated by the Suffolk County Historical Society, Healthcare Instruments – Past and Present was developed in partnership with the Stony Brook University Libraries and Stony Brook Medicine. The exhibit showcases instruments from the collection of the late Dr. R.Sherman Mills of Setauket, a family physician on Long Island who practiced medicine from the 1940s to early 1980s.

The exhibit opened September 13th, and will be on display for the entire 2012-2013 academic year.

Currently 40 medical instruments from Dr. Mills’ collection are featured in the Stony Brook exhibit, which is the first in a series of displays at the Health Sciences Library. All of the instruments were donated by the Mills family to the Suffolk County Historical Society.

“This exhibit is a wonderful example of how Stony Brook University partners with community organizations like the Suffolk County Historical Society to create an experience that benefits everyone,” said Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, President of Stony Brook University.

Annual Breakfast Set On Thursday, October 11th, the Islip Thanksgiving Breakfast Committee Inc., will once again host its annual Thanksgiving Breakfast to continue our special fund to purchase food baskets for needy families within the Town of Islip. This year’s event will be held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook beginning at 8 a.m.

A “Thanksgiving Breakfast Committee” was formed approximately 29 years ago and it included the Town Supervisor,

Town management, employees and community members.

This committee was formed as an act of goodwill and hosted an annual Supervisor’s Thanksgiving Breakfast Fundraiser to purchase turkeys for clients of Town programs and agencies in the Youth Bureau, Human Development and Handicapped Services Divisions.

Over the years, the “Breakfast” has expanded, and last year 425 baskets of Thanksgiving meal

provisions were delivered to clients from 57 different community agencies and local churches. This year we hope to exceed that number, and provide baskets to more families in need.

The Summer Institute is the result of a key recommendation from the 2003 National Research Council report, “Bio2010: T r a n s f o r m i n g Undergraduate Education for Future Research Biologists,” which called for programs of professional development to engage faculty at research-intensive institutions in taking greater responsibility for h i g h - q u a l i t y undergraduate biology education. The report emphasized the importance of new approaches to teaching based on emerging evidence about how people learn and a greater emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching.

It called upon college and university administrators - as well as funding agencies - to support the development or adaptation of such approaches.

At the 2012 Summer Institute, teams worked

together to develop or adapt a series of “teachable tidbits” that they agreed to implement in a course during this academic year and assess whether students learn from that material. Teams also pledged to implement a mentoring seminar to enhance the ability of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and others to mentor undergraduates in their research laboratory.

The Undergraduate Biology Program, which sponsored the participation of the three Stony Brook professors in the Summer Institute, is preparing to create a new interdisciplinary specialization in quantitative biology, for which Professor La Camera will contribute a new undergraduate course. “For me, the real objective of higher education is to learn critical thinking skills that can be applied to any problem outside the classroom,” said Professor La Camera. “At the Summer Institute, we applied the principles of ‘active learning’ and ‘scientific teaching’ to create a teaching module about the use of logarithms in biology,” he said. “The experience gained will be invaluable in helping me successfully launch this exciting new educational initiative.”

This earlyOctober event comes at the beginning of the 25th year of Domestic Violence Awareness Month - a designation renewed by Congress annually since the first national domestic violence hotline was created in the late 1980’s.

“If there’s one message we hope to share loudly and clearly on October 4th as we honor survivors and remember victims of domestic violence, it is this,” said Jeffrey Friedman, Executive Director of The Retreat, a nonprofit on eastern Long Island, “Domestic violence services are a critical component of our community’s public safety strategy; these services must be continued.”

The Suffolk County Police Columbia Association recently honored Legislator Lou D’Amaro with its 2012 Public Service Award at the fraternal organization’s annual golf outing fundraiser, held September 10th at the Hampton Hills Golf and Country Club in Westhampton Beach.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Muratore served as chairman of the 2012 event. Mario Mattera of Plumbers Local Unit #200 was also honored.

Under the director of President Gilda Avram,

the Suffolk County Columbia Police Association is comprised of law enforcement personnel of ItalianAmerican decent who are dedicated to developing an understanding and appreciation of the many contributions made by Italian-Americans.

It provides leadership in the spirit of brotherhood among people regardless of race, creed or religion and promotes a positive focus on education, cultural and charitable endeavors while providing scholarships to worthy local students.

“As someone whose grandparents emigrated from Italy to the United States and worked hard to become citizens, I am especially proud to receive this award,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “The Suffolk County Police Columbia Association has a stellar reputation for doing terrific work on behalf of the community.

This is three year-old Dharma. She is one of the rescued dogs I wrote about last week, and her story breaks my heart. Dharma’s ear has been badly ripped (healing now), her face is scarred and bares witness to the unspeakably cruel life she has led. Apparently, she was used as bait to train the fighting dogs.

Perhaps she was chosen because she is petite (only 36 lbs), demure and sweet.

Despite the unthinkable cruelty that she has suffered at the hands of man, she loves people. She is truly a special soul and deserves to be in a loving home with people who will cherish her and return the love she is so anxious to give.

To quote Brookhaven Animal Shelter director Dori Scofield, “She forgives the humans who mistreated her. After all, dogs are most forgiving creatures.

They put us humans to shame.”

Dharma is all gentleness and loves to give kisses. You can see the sweetness of her soul shinning in her bright eyes. Unfortunately, Dharma has been bitten and attacked by the fighting dogs in training so many times that she must be the only dog in the household.

Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, recently announced that her program will be a recipient in the 11th Annual Panera Bread 2012 Pink Ribbon Bagels campaign. The Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign, to date, has raised well over $100,000 to benefit Long Island breast cancer organizations.

In addition to the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, Pink Ribbon Campaign funds will be donated to Prevention Is the Cure and the Breast Cancer Research Program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Panera Bread, in partnership with WALK 97.5 who is getting the word out, will donate 25 cents for every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold in its 22 Long Island bakery-cafes.

“The initiative continues to grow each year,” says Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Doherty Enterprises, Inc., franchisee for Panera Bread. “WALK 97.5 makes a big push in the fall to educate and inform listeners about breast cancer prevention, screening and treatment.”

The Crisis Center was selected by Brooke and her fellow students to be the recipient of 2012’s fundraising.

The Crisis Center, now in its 41st year, is dedicated to increasing suicide awareness, educating everyone about the warning signs of suicide, and destigmatizing the subject of suicide and spreading the word that “it’s okay to ask for help.”

“Recent statistics about suicide underscore the importance of the Crisis Center’s 24/7 hotline for anyone to be able to access at critical times in their lives,” states Linda Leonard, Executive Director. “Our Walk is an opportunity for anyone who has been touched by suicide, either directly or indirectly, to talk openly about a subject that has, for too long, remained in the shadows.”

Suicide and suicide prevention affects everyone: · For the first time since 1998, suicide is in the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S.;

· It is the third leading cause of death for adolescents 14 to 19 years of age; · It is the second leading cause of death for young adults 19 – 24 years of age; · Elderly suicide rates are 50% higher than for young people; · One of every five suicides in the country is committed by a returning soldier from Iraq or Afghanistan – or once every 90 minutes; · For every suicide, there is an average of 13 suicide attempts; · 8 out of 10 people who commit suicide tell someone first.

In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science.
