onnetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Robotics Team recently visited the Arthur Premm School in Oakdale, to thank members of the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children for their financial support during the Robotics season. The Connetquot High School Robotics Team wrote a grant proposal for funding in order to compete at the Jacob Javits Region Competition in March.

Hospital Blessing On April 23rd, Most Rev. William Murphy, Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, formally blessed St. Joseph Hospital’s new chapel. The mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The Foundation’s mission reflects the lifechanging impact that a Make-A-Wish® experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities. The Make-A-Wish Foundation was founded in 1980 after a little boy named Chris Greicius realized his heartfelt wish to become a police officer. Since its humble beginnings, the organization has blossomed into a worldwide phenomenon, reaching more than 250,000 children around the world, comprised of 62 national chapters and 43 international affiliates. These meal packets were then distributed to Island Harvest, The Inn (Hempstead,) St. Hugh’s (Huntington Station,) St. Patrick’s (Huntington,) Our Lady of Grace Howard Beach,) the Freeport Emergency Food Pantry and other local food pantries in need. Additional meal packets are being shipped to the Andrew Grene School outside of Port au Prince, Haiti, an official feeding site that will prepare and serve the food to children in need. In total 310,044 meals were packed over the three-day period. In addition to LuHi’s student body and faculty of 680, volunteers from Long Island Lutheran Day School, The Greenvale School, Mill Neck School for the Deaf, the Oyster Bay H.S. Interact Club, HempsteadUniondale Rotary Club, Hempstead HS HaitianAmerican Group, Elwood Elementary School and various Lutheran and other church and community organizations helped us pack the meals
to feed hungry individuals on Long Island and abroad. Members of the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station lent their muscle power and helped with the set-up of this event. Over $80,000 was raised as the project generated much excitement among the LuHi Family and the Long Island Community, including the following major sponsors of the event: Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School, The Hallock Family, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Henry Schein, the Bergman Fund, Food Network and twenty-one other school, church and community organizations. Long Island Lutheran was also selected as a finalist in MSG Varsity’s Charity Champions contest for their efforts in funding, planning, hosting, and completing this massive project. In recognition of National Volunteer Week, St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center in collaboration with St. Catherine of Siena Hospital Medical Center held an appreciation event to honor their volunteers. This event was attended by over 80 individuals who were thanked by the staff and administration for their time and dedication. The Director of Volunteers, Heather Reynolds, expressed
her gratitude to the volunteers, “Thank you for all your hard work, time and talent, all of us here at St. Catherine of Siena truly appreciate your efforts and support.” Students of the hospital’s Healthcare Career Exploration and Internship Program crafted beautiful banners which displayed the theme “Coming together in unity to help the community.” Additionally, Nicole Heller of Cake Chaos
by Nicole donated 100 beautifully decorated cupcakes for the event. As an added token of appreciation, the residents made napkins in the shape of flowers to fill with candy kisses to be given to each volunteer. It was a day of giving back to these wonderful, selfless, generous individuals who give of their time to the residents and patients each day.

The Ride also helps support Stony Brook Medicine’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Association certified center on Long Island. The idea of the pinwheels, conceived by Christopher Pendergast, is to remind everyone of the importance of research to seek better treatments for ALS and that a cure is “blowin’ in the wind.” For students seeking community service recognition that may be required from organizations or schools, a form is available to recognize their efforts. Volunteers are needed to assist Stony Brook University staff on May 4th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when 6,000 pinwheels will be installed in a field at South P Lot on the Stony Brook University Campus. The pinwheels represent the lives lost annually to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The pinwheels will serve as a powerful backdrop at Stony Brook University’s annual Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony, which will take place on May 11th, starting at 2 p.m. The annual Ride for Life, started in 1998 by Christopher Pendergast, a 20-year ALS patient, advocate, and founder of the Ride for Life Organization, raises awareness and funds for ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease. The 12-day power wheelchair trek by ALS patients across Long Island

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone marked the forty third anniversary of Earth Day today, unveiling an exhibit honoring one of Suffolk County’s most environmentally sensitive and significant areas, the Long Island Pine Barrens. The Suffolk County Historical Society has installed an exhibit, Barren and Waste Land: Long Islanders and the Pine Barrens in the lobby of the H. Lee Dennison county office building in Hauppauge. “Although first created in 1997, this exhibition remains relevant today to the environment and culture of our region,” said County Executive Steve
Bellone. “The Long Island Pine Barrens is a rich ecosystem that Suffolk County is working hard to protect. This exhibit will help visitors to understand and appreciate the Pine Barren region more fully.” The exhibit focuses on one of the great natural resources of Long Island shown in its historic context. On display are historic interpretations and images of the Pine Barrens region, including Camp Upton and the once booming cranberry industry of years gone by. Throughout history, the Long Island Pine Barrens has meant different thing to different cultures and segments of the
community. To Native Americans, the Pine Barrens was an ecosystem rich in resources, to be used in meeting daily living needs. European settlers used these resources too, although often in a manner that had destructive impacts. “The purpose of this exhibition is to provide an interpretation of the relationship between various human cultures and the resources and landscapes that collectively comprise the Long Island Pine Barrens,” said Suffolk County Historian Peter Fox Cohalan. The exhibit runs through June 2013.

More than 400 attendees from the Long Island medical and corporate community came out to the Cradle of Aviation in Garden City on Friday, April 12th, to attend the American Heart Association’s 50th Annual Long Island Heart Ball. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership. This year’s event chair, Peter L. The Paths We Choose By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that. Ironic, isn’t it? But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions
among Journalism’s elite which reignites that fire – that passion to make a difference with the written word, the spoken word, photography… whatever the specific medium might be. During the course of the evening, the question arose as to what, specifically, qualified someone to be a Journalist. After all, anyone can blog, anyone can utilize social media to share their thoughts and opinions on all things important (or trivial, as the case may be). So where lies the distinction? The joke was made that, “Journalists have the ability to be fired.” This is actually true, to a degree. Those whose opinions are not solicited have no real accountability to the
public. Of course, they should regardless. But in reality, it is the almighty dollar which dictates our purpose in life more than any sense of real responsibility. It’s a shame, as many of my fellow college classmates have long since abandoned the Journalism field for so-called loftier, more lucrative pursuits. But what of the fire? The motivation to make a difference? Not to mention, the four years of schooling at a rather expensive private university…But to each his/her own. For me, all it takes is one evening of stimulating conversation to quell any doubts that this is the field for me. Proud to be a Journalist, always.
As any prospective college student knows, SAT scores and your Grade Point Average are not the only factors that play a role in the admissions process. It is said that colleges like a well-rounded student. The term “well-rounded” is often thrown about without thought, which raises the question: what exactly is an extracurricular? Most colleges would define the term “extracurricular” as something done or happening outside the normal curriculum of a school or college. This means anything from Archery to volunteering at a Zoo. Extracurricular activities don’t have to be
a chore; finding those that suit your interest are a good way to make friends, explore careers and ultimately help attain your goals. So what do you love to do? Really, anything counts as an extracurricular! Fishing, hiking, boating, constructing and drawing all help you as a person, and as an applicant. Even playing the guitar has hidden benefits that any future college would love to see. Most universities or colleges prefer an abundance of extracurricular activities, and some even base 25% of their decision on these items. It is a good idea to get an early start. One would advise freshmen to begin compiling their list of
sports, clubs, volunteer hours and passions now. It is one of those things essential to your success and maximizing the caliber of school you or your child plan on attending. Some of the most favorable activities include Student Council, being the captain of a sports team, club or any other leadership position. Having a plethora of after-school programs can only boost one’s chances, giving a reason to spend one’s time wisely! On top of being good résumé padding, extracurricular activities help portray your passions to a potential school. Is your kid going to college anytime soon? If so, remember, extracurricular activities actually matter!

North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Project Coastal Care has received one of Sustainable Long Island’s Getting It Done Awards this year for providing free medical care to New Yorkers impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Since the program’s inception last November, Project Coastal Care has treated more than 1,200 people in a mobile medical van that has made regularly scheduled visits to areas affected by the super storm, including Broad Channel in Queens, Staten Island and the Long Island communities of Long Beach and Lindenhurst. The van began treating people in Babylon this month. The North ShoreLIJ Health System received a $350,000 grant from the Robin Hood Relief Fund in February which will enable the van’s medical team to continue treating people through August. The mobile van is staffed with medical professionals, administrative support personnel and a driver. Patients have been treated for a range of illnesses and injuries, including upper respiratory infections, minor lacerations and maintenance of chronic and acute illnesses. In addition, the van’s medical staff provides flu and tetanus vaccinations. All of the care has been delivered free of charge, regardless of whether patients are insured. “We’re providing a valuable service to people during a difficult time in their lives and
what has proven to be a continued and extended challenging period,” said Maria Torroella Carney, MD, North Shore-LIJ’s director of communitybased geriatrics in the department of medicine, who leads the mobile van project. “It’s very rewarding to assist these residents as they put their lives back together. We’re bringing quality healthcare resources from the health system directly to their communities.” Lisa Burch, North Shore-LIJ’s director of sustainability and social responsibility, said the award recognizes North Shore-LIJ’s commitment to the community. “We’re not just about providing care to the patients who walk through our doors but also helping those who cannot get to the care they require,” she said. This is the third year that Sustainable Long Island is bestowing the “Getting It Done” awards to local organizations. This year, groups are being honored for their work helping people impacted by Hurricane Sandy. County Executive Steven Bellone and the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Citizens Advisory Panel today announced that applications for “Round 11” Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Grants are available. A pool of $250,000 is available for partial funding of capital projects located in or adjacent to downtown areas on municipallyowned property. Applicants must be organizations that represent a downtown area and who partner with their local municipality. Organizations that represent downtown areas including business improvement districts, chambers of commerce, civic associations, historical societies, beautification societies, and local development corporations. Towns or villages who partner with a community organization are required to pass resolutions supporting the project on which the two entities partner. The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 19th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. More than 800 runners are expected. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the

On April 18th, Legislator Tom Muratore’s staff attended Operation Safe Stop Day at Longwood High School in Middle Island. Operation Safe Stop seeks to promote school bus safety through education and enforcement efforts. In a collaborative effort with Atlantic Express and other bus companies throughout Suffolk County, law enforcement officials, school and community leaders, as well as local elected officials,
Operation Safe Stop strives to raise the awareness of school bus and traffic safety. “An estimated 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York State school buses every day,” stated Legislator Muratore. “That statistic is astounding to me - 50,000 times each day, we put our most valued resource, our children, in peril. The awareness provided by Operation Safe Stop is crucial in preventing school bus accidents that could result
in injury or death.” L o n g w o o d ’ s Transportation Department hosts this event each year under the leadership of Coordinator Gale Winsper. To recognize these efforts, a proclamation was presented on behalf of Legislator Muratore by his staff. “I applaud the efforts of Gale and other community officials who make public safety a high priority. The recognition is well deserved,” concluded Muratore.

Suffolk County Community College’s Stand up SCCC Committee was formed to encourage college-wide conversations on the topic of bullying and cyberbullying. This semester, students were invited to submit creative works to be judged for the ability to express how bullying or cyberbullying touched their life, how it impacts human dignity, or how students can take a stand against it. DISPENSING COMFORT - After passing a difficult nurse entrance exam and interview, and after studying for 17 months, 107 male and female students graduated from the Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing. The ceremony took place on April 4th at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. It was a night filled with laughter, singing, crying, hugging, and cheering. These successful completers can now apply to take the New York State Licensing Examination.

The game was Principal of Connetquot’s Helen B. Duffield played at the Charles LaRosa Sports Complex in Ronkonkoma. Elementary School in Ronkonkoma, recently welcomed an enthusiastic group of Connetquot High School students who helped kick off the annual Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) program. On March 18th Connetquot HS English teacher Alise Salvaggio brought along 50 students to read with, inspire, and share their love of reading, with their new friends. Dr. Gail Cholden, Principal of Connetquot’s Arthur Premm Alternative Pre-School in Oakdale, welcomed West Sayville Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Lucas Domingo on February 8th. Firefighter Domingo spoke to the excited youngsters about fire safety at home, as well as school. Domingo began his presentation by showing a short video about the dangers of fire, methods of avoiding injuries and how firefighters work to protect our children and community. Following a brief question & answer session with the
youngsters, Mr. Domingo dressed in his protective gear which included a colorful hat, gloves, boots, jacket and pants. He allowed the children to touch the protective clothing, and stressed that children should not be frightened by the fireman’s protective clothing, mask or tools. Members of the West Sayville Fire Department visit Connetquot district schools to promote fire safety and education. Students had the opportunity to practice ‘stop, drop and roll’ in the event any of them should have their clothes catch
on fire. Another important lesson to be learned was not to search for toys or pets in the event of fire in the home … get out of the house and wait for mom and dad outside. Dr. Cholden, the teachers and all the students, thanked Assistant Chief Domingo for visiting the Arthur Premm School to talk about fire safety. The children were reminded about the safety lessons they learn at school, and were asked to share firefighter Domingo’s safety tips with their siblings and parents at home.

It was so nice to see so many Duffield alumni return to read with our current students.” Ms. Salvaggio’s students had the opportunity to experience the joy of working with young people, and reflect on their first ‘teaching’ encounter! One visitor was heard to say, “… teaching isn’t as easy as I thought!” Duffield students thoroughly enjoyed the interaction with their new high school
friends. A pizza lunch was enjoyed by the Connetquot students before they headed back to class, to share their experience with friends. Duffield’s PARP program is part of a nation-wide effort that asks parents to read with their children for at least 15 minutes per day. The reading material can be anything that strengthens a child’s reading and communication skills. Mrs. Farrell thanked the high school students and Mrs. Salvaggio, for their outstanding visit with Helen B. Duffield Elementary School students.
ROBOTICS TEAM ADVANCES - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Robotics Team recently visited the Arthur Premm School in Oakdale, to thank members of the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children for their financial support during the Robotics season. The Connetquot High School Robotics Team wrote a grant proposal for funding in order to compete at the Jacob Javits Region Competition in March.
“Cool Things Happen When You Speak A Foreign Language” according to author, anesthesiologist and linguist Dr. Christopher J. Gallagher. On Wednesday, March 27th Dr. Gallagher visited the Connetquot Public Library to share his expertise and extensive repertoire of stories of how language transformed his life. His love of language began with his coauthor and late father Dr. William B. Gallagher and an opportunity to speak French with some Vietnamese refugees who’d settled in his home state of Wisconsin after the war.
A family tradition, dating back to his grandfather who served as a physician during World War I, exemplified how a basic understanding of the German language helped him survive in a cellar occupied by wounded soldiers. Dr. Gallagher recalled some fascinating experiences; from purchasing coffee for travel weary German exchange students at JFK, to conversing with Chinese students on the Stony Brook campus and reassuring foreign patients in their native tongue prior to surgery. He is fluent is five languages, conversational in six and has a working knowledge of four. This, coupled with his stint as a standup comedian made his presentation entertaining and informative. The audience contributed their own diverse stories of their
desire to travel, learn the language of their ancestors and student posing questions about the most beneficial ways to study a foreign language. Dr. Gallagher advocates the use of free services and materials explaining “the price is always right at the library.” He considers foreign movies, CD’s and the Mango program excellent resources for language immersion. The single best trick to learning a language is choosing a book you love in English and get it in the language you intend to learn. The author of twelve books, Dr. Gallagher urges everyone who studies a foreign language to listen, practice and engage in conversation. The exchange between individuals who find even a brief common bond through language can be amazing and cool things can happen.

MASTER CLASS - Connetquot Central School District’s Oakdale Bohemia Middle School recently welcomed members of the SUNY Fredonia Woodwind Quintet for a concert and learning workshop. The professional group played a selection of chamber music for the students. Chamber music is a form of classical music composed and performed by small groups. The students also had the chance to work with Dr. Marc Guy, horn professor at SUNY Fredonia, on honing their musical talents and skills.
HEART BASKETS - Connetquot Central School District’s Arthur Premm Learning Center pre-school students were recently visited by staff from their local Home Depot to build heart-shaped baskets. Under the leadership of store manager John Weiss, several other Home Depot staff members brought each student their very own orange apron, a hammer, and a ‘make your own heart-shaped basket’ kit. While assembling the baskets, Home Depot staffers guided and assisted each student with crafting and hammering their personalized heart-shaped baskets, which the youngsters happily brought home.

Science Chairperson, Ivan Suarez said this is one of his favorite student projects, “having the student’s involved in this citizen science project in their community is helping them learn research skills and strengthen their knowledge in the sciencesthey love it”. For the tenth consecutive year, the Long Island Game Farm is inviting graduating high school seniors to apply for the Stanley and Susan Novak Memorial Scholarship. The time is now to apply for the annual scholarship, which is worth $1,000. Each year, this award is granted to a graduating senior from Long Island who plans to attend a twoyear or higher college or university program, and exemplifies the qualities
required to become a pioneer in nature, whether it be in the field of veterinary medicine or environmental science. The application deadline is Friday, May 31st, 2013. Now in its 44th year, the Long Island Game Farm was founded in 1970 by Stanley and Diane Novak and is located in Manorville. It features hundreds of animals on 25 acres of land. Year after year, the park is visited by thousands and enjoyed
by all. It has been an educational site for school children to learn about animals and nature for decades. The scholarship was established in 2004 to honor the memories of Stanley John Novak, the Game Farm’s co-founder, and his daughter, Susan Mary Novak. In 1999, Stanley Novak was 66 and had been building the Long Island Game Farm for nearly 30 years. Sadly, he died from a heart attack,
leaving his legacy behind. In 2001, his daughter, Susan, who started working at the Game Farm when she was five years old, died from Multiple Myeloma at age 37. Both were passionate about animals and were steadfast in maintaining Long Island’s environment. “I can think of no better way to help preserve the memories of Stanley and Susan. They helped our family pursue its dream of building a park where

WONDER OF THE WORLD - Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School third grade students recently concluded their studies of Chinese culture with a colorful exhibit displaying some of China’s rich history. Using various internet resources and books, the students learned about China’s geography, government structure, economics, as well as the most recent ‘Wonder of the World’: The Terracotta Soldiers of the Qun Dynasty.

Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr. recently congratulated the families of Art teacher Erica Martino-Lattuga, and Security Specialist Debbie Billotto, on being recognized by the district’s Board of Education (BOE). Members of the BOE presented certificates to Martino-Lattuga and Billotto at their April 23rd meeting. Their quick thinking, training and reaction, resulted in saving the life of a high school student who had suffered a grand mal seizure during lunch period at
Connetquot High School. Felicio attended the presentation and told Erica and Debbie that he is “… proud of you both for responding quickly, working together, and saving the life of one of our students.” MartinoLattuga and Billotto performed CPR on the student and were able to revive him, before paramedics arrived on the scene. At the time Erica was 6 ½ months pregnant, and as a result of her intercession, experienced major complications, putting herself and the health of her unborn child
in jeopardy. Martino-Lattuga was recently notified by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Association that her name would be added to the association’s Life Honor Roll, for her life saving action while on duty at Connetquot HS. Congratulations to Erica Martino-Lattuga and Debbie Billotto for your well deserved recognition by the Connetquot Board of Education. And a sincere ‘Thank You’ for your efforts from your CTA colleagues, and the entire Connetquot community.
PRESIDENTIAL CORRESPONDENCE - Students at Connetquot School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School recently wrote to U.S. President Barak Obama asking him questions and promptly received a response letter from the president himself. The envelope, addressed to the students, contained a letter from President Obama, a copy of his official Presidential portrait, a brochure with answers to frequently asked questions and a greeting and photo from Bo, the First Family’s beloved dog.
CULTURE COMES TO SLOCUM - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students were recently visited by Native American historians Robert Vetter and Jamie Reason. The duo described what life was like for Native Americans living on the Great Plains and brought along toys which children of the Plains used to play. The students went inside a full-sized tipi and were also able to wear some of the clothing traditionally worn by Native Americans, including Buffalo skin outerwear and beads.
