egislator Rob Calarco was proud to join with the FIRST Robotics Team at Patchogue-Medford High School to coordinate a Food and Toy Drive for the needy. The Robotics Team, which is comprised of 67 members, threw all of its energy into collecting enough food to provide 18 large boxes of non-perishables and diapers and over 100 wrapped toys to 27 homeless teen mothers and their infants, and six needy families. Thanks to all those who participated.

Memorial Scholarship The Stony Brook University School of Journalism received a $50,000 gift from Elaine Crosson and her son Daniel, to establish The Matthew T. Crosson Memorial Scholarship In Journalism which will endow a scholarship to support young journalists who wish to carry on the pursuit of public affairs journalism and advance public discourse for which the late Matt Crosson was so well known.

A portion of the funding comes from donations from family and friends, and the full $50,000 will be matched by a special grant to Stony Brook University by Jim and Marilyn Simons and the Simons Foundation, resulting in an impact of

$100,000. The endowment will continue to be funded with additional donations from the community.

Matt Crosson, the beloved and highly-touted former President of the Long Island Association, a title he held for 16 years, died unexpectedly on December 23rd, 2010 from complications following a stroke. He resigned from the LIA earlier that year and accepted a job as the Chief Executive Officer of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. Following his death, Elaine and Dan, who is now 14, moved back to their home on Long Island after Elaine accepted a position at Stony Brook University as Vice President for External Relations.

“It has been two years since Matt passed away and Daniel and I still miss him so much, as does the rest of his family, and so many others who knew and loved him,” said Elaine Crosson, JD, Crosson’s wife of 17 years.

“Dan and I wanted to make this gift now to commemorate Matt’s legacy as a great advocate for public dialogue, and to provide others an opportunity to honor his memory.

“Matt was an attorney not a journalist by trade, yet his appreciation for the written word and his belief in responsible journalism was fierce, so in addition to his primary role of advancing economic development for Long Island, it was his

personal mission to bring to fore the most pressing current affairs issues facing this community and all of New York by engaging some of the most relevant public figures and luminaries in our country in a personal dialogue right here in our own back yard.

“The Matthew T. Crosson Memorial Scholarship endowment is meant to foster that mission, to keep the vision alive by supporting journalists in training at Stony Brook who will carry on the pursuit of public discourse that Matt so cherished.”

The Crosson scholarship will be available to a qualifying full-time junior or senior enrolled in the School of

Journalism at Stony Brook University, where Jim Klurfeld, Crosson’s friend and longtime cohost of the public affairs program “Cutting Edge,” is a professor. The recipient must demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in journalism with a demonstrated interest in public affairs.

The recipient will also have the opportunity to intern at Newsday or at News 12 Long Island and Newsday.com or a special rotating internship at all three news outlets. One recipient per year beginning in the Fall 2013 academic year will be chosen by a selected committee appointed by School of Journalism School Dean, Howard

“This scholarship will be invaluable in supporting students, yearafter-year, whose passion will be to pursue reporting in the public interest,” said Schneider. “I can think of nothing more important.”

“This is not only a wonderful development for our program but wholly appropriate that it should be in Matt Crosson’s name,” said Klurfeld. “Whether he was a prosecutor, running the New York State Court system, heading the LIA or hosting a regular public affairs television show, Matt's goal was always to find the truth. Two days into 2013… so how is your year going?

Have you given up on those promising New Year’s resolutions yet? Has your self-proclaimed “fresh start” gone by the wayside already? Two days in, and you’re wishing for 2014?

Funny as it sounds, this is precisely the mentality many have when it comes to their failed attempts to remake their lives. One and done, so to speak, which is silly when you consider there are 365

days in a year, with countless opportunities for derailment during each and every one of them.

Odds are, complications will arise at some point.

Sure, there are days when frustrations are bound to get the better of us. Weeks even. But what is life if not a journey laid out before us, with twists and turns along the way?

Some choose to stay the course, while others prefer the road less traveled – it all depends upon our respective mentalities, which, as we all well know, can change moment to

moment.

The New Year is just another one of those days, for better or worse. It is what you choose to make of it, to a point. Only certain things are within our control; other aspects need be left up to fate.

After all, what’s that they say about “the best laid plans”? Exactly. Don’t bother making them.

So maintain that sense of optimism. Don’t despair quite yet. There are precisely 363 more days left to get it right.

A group of Stony Brook University athletes set out to bring joy to pediatric patients being treated at the Stony Brook University Cancer Center.

So they took on a holiday season mission to “stuff” an Athletics bus with toys of all kinds and deliver the donated items directly to the kids. A few days before Christmas they delivered more than 100 toys and gifts, such as dolls, board

games, lego kits, coloring sets, footballs, and a box full of lacrosse sticks.

The pediatric patients, along with their siblings, beamed with delight when the unexpected delivery came. The moment was a welcome break from studies and training for the students, as they took in the joy of the children when placing the gifts under the Christmas tree in the playroom.

“For these kids to be able to pick a toy or two while in the midst of treatment is extra special for them and gets their mind off of treatments and having to be at the outpatient center around the holidays,” said Robert I. Parker, MD, Director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital.

specialist Lauren Sharaby said that the many toys will be distributed first within pediatric outpatient clinic at the Cancer Center and then as needed for patients at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital.

Chris Murray, Manager of Athletic Marketing at Stony Brook University, said that the athletes rallied to organize the holiday season toy drive.

They collected donations from Athletics and many other University departments. They also received donations from fans who attended Stony Brook basketball games throughout the month of December. The group of athletes able to make the bus delivery represented a number of Stony Brook sports, including lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving.

Kyle’s story is one of hard work and making the most of opportunities, leading the Seawolves to consecutive Big South titles (fourth straight overall) and two appearances in the Division I Football Championship playoffs, successfully balancing

academics and athletics to earn accolades in both; and also recognized Poornima Peiris (Engineering), 23, of Cutchogue, NY, a student that emigrated from Sri Lanka with her family when she was just 12 years old. Growing up on the east end, she found herself immersed in a whole new culture. Today, she is the first person in her extended family to receive a college degree.

Due to the ongoing renovation of the Sports Arena, this year’s commencement was held as two events; one for students from the College of Arts and Sciences and another for all other students. Degrees were conferred upon graduates who completed their degree requirements during any one of the following semesters: Summer 2012; Fall 2012; and, Winter 2013. On Sunday, December 9th, Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitative Care Center hosted their 4th Annual Christmas Family Festival at Timber Point Country Club in Great River.

This brunch was a day to celebrate the Christmas season with family, residents, staff and local community members.

Musical entertainment was provided along with many children’s craft

activities and a surprise visit from Santa.

This year we honored Mr. Robert Valli, retired Vice President HSBC, Public Banking, as well as Chairman of Our Lady of Consolation’s Foundation.

As a result of the severe damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, and subsequent storm, residents of the Connetquot School District joined forces to help their neighbors by providing food, water, clothing as well as helping to clean up their neighborhoods of fallen trees and debris. In the Oakdale community, which was the hardest-hit within the district, neighbors, students, teachers, staff and administration of the Idle Hour (IH) Elementary School, and OakdaleBohemia Middle School organized Family Fun Nights for local residents.

At the Idle Hour Elementary School, on November 14th, the PTA and staff hosted a pasta dinner for the Oakdale community.

The PTA provided a variety of pasta dishes, the staff provided baked goods and beverages, while Mama’s Pizzeria, in Oakdale, donated tasty Italian dishes. Parent & staff volunteers served the community during the evening meal. The Idle Hour hallway was filled with donated toiletries, cleaning supplies, food, paper products, water and other items for the guests to take with them following dinner.

On November 15th, Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) Principal Ms. Susanne Bailey welcomed close to 250 members of the community for what she referred to as a “… chance for some normalcy in a comfortable and familiar place.” With the support of Chrissy Coyne, Director of Training for the Applebee’s Restaurant chain (and Connetquot graduate!), a Family Fun night was provided at OBMS for those in the community affected by this Sandy Super-Storm.

20 Applebee’s employees volunteered to help out for this special night.

Coyne had been contacted by OBMS Math teacher Nicole Quillo who asked whether Applebee’s was in a position to help relieve some of the hardships suffered by members of the community.

Working with Ms. Bailey and Dr. Pincus, Chrissy Coyne suggested “ … an evening where the community could come together, connect and reflect.” She gave much of the credit

for the evening’s success to the support of Applebee’s Director of Operations Marc Prince, and Area Director Tony Valentino.

Applebee’s provided a tasty menu consisting of Mac & Cheese, Chicken Fingers, French Fries, Chicken Caesar Salad, Steak, Chicken, Penne Alfredo Pasta, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and steamed vegetables.

Applebee’s also provided 2 Dinner passes for 2, the use of a Foosball table for the night, and the entertainment of ‘Send in the Clowns’ (New Hyde Park) and Mr. Twisty (Miller Place).

OBMS Principal Ms. Sue Bailey extended her gratitude to Chrissy Coyne, and the entire Applebee’s organization for their generous support of the Oakdale community, as well as her teaching staff which also helped serve dinner, and entertain the children.

Additional food and supplies were provided by Applebee’s General Managers Mark Winhurst (Huntington), Jerry Williams (Bohemia), Jason Sicignano (Farmingdale).

Generous donations were also provided by Pepsi, Costco and Waldbaums.

Board Of Ed Honored New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo declared the week of October 29th through November 2nd as School Board Recognition Week.

At the November 13th meeting of the Connetquot School District Board of Education (BOE), Superintendent Dr. Alan B. Groveman read state and county proclamations commending its members for their efforts on behalf of the citizens of the district.

Dr. Groveman, and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Peggie S. Staib, read from three commendations citing the outstanding efforts of President Dawn Berntsen,

VP Lee Kennedy, and Trustees Kim Pepe, Michael D. Kealey and Leo R. Marinick in support of the children of Connetquot.

These commendations, signed by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, N.Y. State Senator Owen H. Johnson, N.Y.State Assemblyman Al Graf and County Legislator William J. Lindsay, recognized the admirable achievements that are an inspiration to the citizens of Suffolk County, and New York State.

The Connetquot School District Council of PTA’s also recognized these elected, unpaid, members of the community by praising their work on

behalf of the residents of the Connetquot School District. President of the Council of PTA’s Eileen Panico, and Corresponding Secretary Gail Yirce presented a plaque and gifts to members of the BOE. Members of Boy Scout Troop 157 (Ronkonkoma, NY) began the meeting by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, which was followed by Liza Bell’s report, as Student Representative to the Board of Education.

Polar Plungers Place First Sayville students who are members of Athletes Helping Others participated in their second annual Polar Plunge in mid December at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai and raised over $6,400 to support Special Olympics Athletes.

The Robotics Team, which is comprised of 67 members, threw all of its energy into collecting enough food to provide 18 large boxes of nonperishables and diapers and over 100 wrapped toys to 27 homeless teen mothers and their infants and six needy families.
