The Youth Waterfowl Program, an instructional course, is set for October 20th. Youth Waterfowl Days, specially designated hunting days, are set for November 10th and 11th.

They say that two of the most taboo topics are religion and politics, subjects that should be avoided at all costs when in mixed company.

Before I had my own legitimate opinions on such matters, I have to admit that I never understood what the big deal was.

Now I get it.

Personally, I have always felt that, as long as your opinion is well informed and based on some sort of intelligent foundation, there should really be no need to defend it.

Believe what you believe; just don’t try to impose it upon others. That’s what the politicians are for. Those basic philosophies which make us different are precisely what make our society unique – and interesting. No need to change that.

When things take a nasty turn – which they inevitably seem to – whether in the form of written discourse or verbal sparring, that’s when it has gone too far. A little healthy debate is fine, and should be encouraged even. We should all be open to other viewpoints – perhaps, in our own narrow-minded tunnel vision, we may have missed some-

thing valid and eye opening.

But merely shoving your unsolicited opinions down someone else’s throat is not only unnecessary, but borders on disrespectful.

Voting booths are private for a reason, as are many religious institutions and practices. No one should feel obligated to defend his/her beliefs, so long as they are founded in some sort of informed, grounded philosophy. And if they aren’t, if they are merely based on a handful of regurgitated talking points or hearsay – well then, why would you want to recruit someone so ignorant to your side anyway? Better they are left to their own devices.

Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc.

During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play.

Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.

The Concussion Act of NYS

The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician.

• Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play.

MAKING A CLINICAL DETERMINATION • Symptoms: somatic (e.g. headache, nausea, dizziness), cognitive (e.g. feeling in a fog), and/or emotional (e.g. liability)

• Behavioral changes: irritability, personality changes • Cognitive impairment: Hard time concentrating, trouble remembering, not feeling themselves, being confused, thinking speed slowed down, taking a longer time to react • Sleep disturbance: drowsiness, insomnia GRADUATED RETURN TO PHYSICAL EXERTION AND ACTIVITY OR RETURN TO PLAY (RTP) This is a six step gradual return to activity. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further.

RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services to support its addiction services in Suffolk County, thanks to the efforts of NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. Specifically, the grant funds the expansion of LICADD’s Start2Stop program, which provides drug and alcohol information, solutionfocused counseling, peer

support and treatment referrals to local residents of all ages.

Start2Stop is a professionally facilitated support group that helps participants explore their substance abuse experiences and attitudes about drugs and alcohol, learn more about the biological/social and p s y c h o l o g i c a l consequences of use and understand the impact such use has had, and will have on their lives and relationships. The twelve

week psycho-educational program is designed for individuals who have had some involvement with drug and/or alcohol use, but may not yet be ready to seek treatment or live a substance-free life.

Participants may have experienced personal or professional consequences of their substance use, or may have been arrested for a non-violent low-level offense that involved the use of alcohol and/or illegal substances. The group is also perfect for those who

are awaiting placement into inpatient or outpatient chemical dependency treatment.

The program is 100% confidential and open to all regardless of ability to pay.

Start2Stop participants are required to abstain from any drug or alcohol use while they are enrolled in the program. Those who are unable to remain abstinent during the twelve weeks of sessions are counseled and referred for more intensive treatment.

With a well-publicized opiate crisis gripping Long Island and a documented upswing in impaired driving and boating, LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says support for Start2Stop comes at the perfect time.

“I am grateful to Assemblyman Sweeney for helping us make this program more accessible to local residents before their use of drugs and alcohol accelerates,” he said. “This proactive approach and timely intervention will help make Suffolk County a safer and healthier place.”

Suffolk County Film Grant Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick is pleased to announce that the Suffolk County Film Commission will be accepting applications for the 2012 Next Exposure: Suffolk County Low Budget Independent Film Grant.

The applications incorporate the Commission’s desire to encourage, promote and assist the motion picture/television industry in utilizing the natural and manmade resources within Suffolk County for locations, as provided in the Laws of Suffolk

County.

All applications will be reviewed by members of the Suffolk County Film Commission and a representative from the Cinema Arts Centre and scored via a merit based grading system. The purpose of the grant is to create opportunities for filmmakers who shoot in Suffolk County Eligible applicants must have directed and completed at least two independent short drama, non-student films that have been selected for exhibition or have directed and completed at

On Sunday September 30th, five members of the Bohemia Fire Department were presented with unit citations, commendation medals and ribbons by the Vocational Education and Extension Board of the County of Suffolk for their heroic efforts at a Hazardous Materials incident on August 18th, 2011 on Wilbur Place.

The call originally came in as an adult female with difficulty breathing. Upon arrival at the location, the five members who initially responded to the call, First Assistant Chief Rich Andersen, Ex-Chief Tom

Riedel, Ex-Chief Mike Waser, Firefighter Justin Jaworowski and Firefighter Danny Behounek, found a female employee of the building in respiratory distress in the front lobby.

Shortly after starting treatment, they were notified of an unconscious female employee in a second floor bathroom and two additional employees in the break room. Upon reaching the second floor, they encountered additional employees, all in various stages of respiratory distress. Without the aid

of their self contained breathing apparatus, and with little regard for their own safety, these five firefighters were able to help six people, unable to walk on their own, out of the building to a safe environment.

Eventually, 200 employees were evacuated from the building and 54 were transported to area hospitals. It was later determined that two chemicals had been improperly mixed together causing a discharge of carbon monoxide gas.

Have you always wanted to write a novel but been scared away by the time and effort involved?

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a nonprofit event that encourages writers to tackle the challenge of completing a novel in the month of November.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a fun, seatof-your-pants approach to novel writing.

Launched in 1999, NaNoWriMo inspires its over 250,000 participants

with email pep talks, a huge and supportive online community, and a host of web-based writing tools. Over the years, many novels written during NaNoWriMo have gone on to be revised, perfected, and ultimately published, including Sara Gruen’s bestselling Water for Elephants.

What better place than the Library to provide inspiration to aspiring novelists? This year, the Library will host two “write-ins” where NaNoWriMo participants can work together as a

group while sharing encouragement and commiseration.

We’ll provide the coffee.

Youth Volunteers Honored

On the evening of September 19th, the Town of Islip Youth Bureau held a special event honoring youth and adult community members who volunteer with the Town's network of youth service agencies. Town Deputy Supervisor Trish Bergin Weichbrodt, Councilman Steve Flotteron, Councilman John Cochrane, Councilman Anthony Senft and Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik personally presented the awards. These youth and adult volunteers serve in a variety of capacities.

In addition to providing direct services to youth, the adult volunteers provide legal advice, fund raising assistance, input into the design and development of programs and participate in a host of community activities. The youth volunteers provide assistance with fund raising projects, community clean-ups & cultural events, lawn care & snow removal for senior and disabled residents and

work with youth program participants younger than themselves.

This event recognized volunteers for their generous contributions of time and talent.

Outstanding Volunteer Award recipients included; Deborah Slinkosky, Vanessa Badia, Leslie Kulewicz, Jennifer Lino, Erika Colangelo, Amanda Van Nostrand, Bryan Ramirez, Burcu Altintas, John Harvey, and Wendy Vergaray. The prestigious Town of Islip Chick Pizzurro Volunteer Award was presented to Jamie Atkinson.

Outstanding Youth Service Professional Awards were presented to several Town of Islip Youth Agency employees for their accomplishments in the field of youth services.

In late spring, the Board of Education began working with the professional recruitment team at Eastern Suffolk BOCES to cultivate and screen candidates for the district’s superintendency.

The Board ultimately interviewed nine finalists for the position, reduced that number to four, and, by unanimous vote, chose Dr. Butera to fill the position.

Dr. Butera has been an educator for almost 20 years, the past three of which he has worked in the Long Beach School District as its assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. During his time in Long Beach, Dr. Butera was widely credited for the district’s notable growth in student achievement. Among the factors contributing to Long Beach’s success were the implementation of the I n t e r n a t i o n a l Baccalaureate Diploma Program, the execution of policies and practices that resulted in a doubling of the district’s college-level offerings and a 40 percent increase in the number of students taking collegelevel classes, as well as a marked increase in college acceptance rates.

Furthermore, with a strong focus on expanding opportunities for students at the middle school level, the district saw significant increases in the number of middle school students taking accelerated science and math courses and a nearly 100 percent passing rate on Regents exams for these courses. Dr. Butera also served successfully and with commendation as chairperson of the Long Beach Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) Committee.

In addition to his administrative experience in Long Beach, Dr. Butera has also worked as a principal, assistant principal and social studies teacher.

Furthermore, for two

years he served as an assistant professor in Dowling College’s department of educational administration, leadership and technology.

Dr. Butera’s work has been published in two professional publications.

In recognition of his dedication to the field of education, Dr. Butera has been recognized by several state and local organizations, including the New York State Office of Human Rights for Character Education. He is also a contributing member of the Nassau County Association of District Curriculum Officials, the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development and the National Staff Development Council.

Dr. Butera graduated with honors from Queens College with a Bachelor of Arts in history. He also earned a Master of Science with honors in special education from Queens College. He holds a certificate of advanced study in educational administration from Hofstra University and a doctoral degree in e d u c a t i o n a l administration, leadership and technology from Dowling College.

At Cherry Avenue, Art teacher Robin Laxton and students gathered on the front lawn for the installation of their handcrafted pinwheels.

Planting the colorful pinwheels in circles, the elementary students had created a kinetic display that pulsed in the gentle breezes and gave passersby moments of peaceful reflection. The spinning pinwheels also served as a reminder that peace is not just a symbol, but an action that can be found in a kind word, a helping hand, along with compassion for others.

After an expansive search that attracted dozens of inquiries and a large number of impressive applicants, the Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education will appoint Dr. Vincent Butera as the district’s new superintendent of schools at a special meeting on Tuesday, October 2nd.

“It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr. Butera, a well-respected educator, to the BayportBlue Point School District,” said Board President James March.

“He is a true academic leader and we are confident he will serve our district well as its new superintendent. It was clear during the recruitment process that Dr. Butera possesses the wide-ranging skill set needed to continue to push our district toward achieving and maintaining the high academic standards we have come to expect here in Bayport-Blue Point.”

“I want to thank the Board of Education for this incredible opportunity,” said Dr. Butera.

“Bayport-Blue Point is a district that is well-regarded by its community and many on the outside, and I look forward to building upon this tradition of success by helping every child succeed to the highest level. My efforts are guided by my belief that schools must develop students who possess the social, emotional and academic skills to succeed beyond high school, and I certainly sensed that same commitment to ensuring student success from the Board of Education."

It is expected that Dr. Butera will begin work on December 1st, 2012, but no later than January 1st, 2013, pending the conclusion of his work in Long Beach. The contract will run through June 30th, 2016. He will be paid an annual salary of $218,000, which is fixed for the first three years of

Commemorating the United Nations’ International Day of Peace, which occurs each year to recognize the efforts of those who endeavor to end conflict and promote peace, Sayville students have traditionally prepared for the occasion in a variety of districtwide projects, such as the Pinwheels Project, the Shanti Fund, and the Peace Pole.

This year, prior to the day of Peace (Friday, September 21st), the High School and Cherry Avenue Elementary School joined with over three million others worldwide and prepared for the celebration by making pinwheels in their art classes.
