pecially significant for the students at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District was January 2nd, when they welcomed back one of their own – fifth-grader Marco Daidone, who has been out of school since last March recovering from osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. Upon his arrival to the school, Marco was greeted by a sea of cheering classmates and friends. Holding paper signs to welcome Marco back were his grade-level peers, along with the second-grade classmates of his brother Vincent. Thanks to all those who came out in support of Marco. Stony Brook University was named the 22nd best value in public colleges and universities for instate students and the 9th best value for out-of-state students for combining “outstanding education with economic value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance in its top 100 rankings of public fouryear institutions. Last year, Kiplinger ranked Stony Brook as the 35th best value for in-state and 29th for out-of-state. The rankings are posted on the Kiplinger website and will appear in the February 2013 issue of Kiplinger. According to Kiplinger, Stony Brook is one of the most selective schools on the list with an admission rate of 39 percent. I hate learning new things. I do. Sure, it’s great to broaden your horizons and add skills to your repertoire, but the actual learning process? Not so much fun. I prefer to fast forward to the part where I miraculously become highly proficient at something (which sometimes never happens) rather than muddle for too long in the learning curve portion. The funny part is that, with most things, once this “curve” has been navigated, you often realize that the new thing you were so
hesitant to take on wasn’t so bad in the first place. Simple, even. Just took a little getting used to, was all. Over time, we seem to be able to adapt to anything. Think about it. Look back on all your years in school… weren’t you nervous the first time being tested on a particular subject? Didn’t you get butterflies the morning of a big presentation? Wasn’t your initial reaction to any massive projects to immediately push them to the back of your mind and procrastinate? New = Frightening then, and it still does, to some extent, now.

While her physical gifts are impressive, it is her spirit that she brings to competition that truly differentiates her in comparison to her peers. Journals Of War Vets
Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane Jr. will soon begin collecting names and biographical information of certain Islip veterans to be featured in the latest edition of Islip’s Journal of War Veterans. Past editions of the Journal have covered those Islip residents who served in World War Two, Korea, Vietnam, and other modern conflicts. The new edition is slated to chronicle the actions of all combat veterans who have served in the first Gulf War to the present War on Terror. “The past editions of the Journal of War Veterans have been inspirational documents that have shown the depth of service which Islip’s residents have given to their nation,” said Councilman Cochrane. “As a retired Captain of the U.S. Navy, this project holds a special place in my heart.” Prior editions of the Journal have relied upon
residents submitting their own family’s history as it relates to the current edition. Islip residents are encouraged to send their submissions to Councilman Cochrane’s office at 655 Main Street, Islip NY 11751. Submissions may also be sent electronically to islipwarjournal@ townofislip-ny.gov A form may be downloaded from the Town website here. All submissions should include the following information: 1. Scholar Athlete
For a second time this season, Sayville has a Capital One/News12 Long Island Scholar Athlete. Matt Iovino was recognized in December by Capital One and News12 Long. A video about Matt aired on News12 (see link). Coach Rob Hoss nominated Matt Iovino, an All-Division Lineman and State Champion, for this award based upon his athleticism, scholarship, and musical versatility. In addition to his athletic prowess, Matt is academically accomplished, has an unweighted average of 94, scored 2130 on the SATs and achieved a perfect score in the math section. As a multi-talented
musician, Matt sings, plays ukulele, piano, guitar, cello, clarinet, qualified two times for All-State in voice and composition, and has appeared in school musicals since Middle School. When he graduates, Matt hopes to pursue his studies in Chemical Engineering at either MIT or Yale. News 12, in conjunction with Capital One Bank, recognizes students from Long Island as Capital One/ News12 Scholar Athletes in weekly broadcasts. “The winners are versatile young people who are busy with full schedules doing superior work, setting examples and setting lofty goals. Relief Benefit Suffolk County Community College recently held a Hurricane Sandy Relief Benefit at the Van Nostrand Theatre on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. The purpose of the event was to raise financial support for the College Foundation Relief Fund. The benefit, which

Hurricane Christmas Party
Holding paper signs to welcome Marco back were his grade-level peers, along with the second-grade classmates of his brother Vincent. Having undergone several procedures and surgeries during his time away from school, Marco proudly returned to Academy Street stronger and, best of all, cancer-free. “I am really happy to be back at school and back with my friends, and I’m looking forward to doing some work in my new classroom,” said Marco.

The start of 2013 was especially significant for the students at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District, as on January 2nd they welcomed back one of their own – fifth-grader Marco Daidone, who has been out of school since last March recovering from osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. Upon his arrival to the school, Marco was greeted by a sea of cheering classmates and friends.

“I was pretty shocked and embarrassed to see all of my classmates and brother’s classmates outside when I arrived here this morning, but at the same time I was really excited.” As the school’s students settled back into their studies following the holiday recess, their smiles and warm wishes for Brendan Barrett, owner Marco hung in the air as Sayville Running collectively, all of Academy of Street looks forward to a Company returned to his alma mater, Sayville happy New Year. High School, as a guest speaker in Mr. Chad Cross’ Sports Marketing Class to enhance their lessons on the real-world application of marketing concepts. Prior to his visit, the Sports Marketing Class was studying product life cycle, new product development, consumer goods, and SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities, threats) analysis. With each class assignment, Mr. Cross reinforced the objectives of the four-P’s (product, price, promotion, and placement) WELCOME BACK - Upon arriving back to school, Academy Street Elementary of marketing. The students School fifth-grader Marco Daidone was greeted by a sea of welcoming friends and brain-stormed to create new product ideas for the teachers. Taking it beyond the classroom lessons was one reason Mr. Cross invited Brendan Barrett, Sayville Class of 2001, to be a guest speaker. Who better to share the real-world application of marketing concepts about retail than a business retailer of sports
merchandise? The fact that he was a local, Downtown Sayville merchant and a Sayville graduate was an extra bonus. Brendan related well with the students, sharing his personal uncertainty (“what do I want to do?”) when he graduated Notre Dame in 2005 with History and Computer applications majors. His success at “working for himself” in a viable business venture was the result of doing the right marketing research, securing a good partnership, and making good business decisions about the need for a Running Shoe store in the area. In 2006, he and his partner opened the Sayville Running Company, first in West Sayville, now in Sayville. For his classroom visit, Brendan brought samples of products by such manufacturer as Brooks. He introduced the updated Adrenaline 13, a very popular model for runners, to the students. One new product that he acquired after a recent business trip to an Expo in Texas, called Icy Feet—a shoe-shaped ice pack for the foot—was developed from a simple
idea to satisfy a marketing need for runners. Brendan’s demonstration, which included forthcoming improvements on the packaging of the product, highlighted what the students had learned: how the theory of new-product analysis was put into practice. As their homework assignment, the high school students had prepared questions for Brendan. Among some of the questions they asked were: · Do you incorporate grassroots marketing into your marketing strategy? · Did the recession affect your business, and if so, how did you change your marketing strategy? · Who designs your windows display? · What is your most popular product line and why? Mr. Cross was happy by the overall success of the informative visit which gave the students a better understanding of marketing as is relates to sports. He was also especially pleased with the genuine interest and great rapport the students had with Brendan.

Legislator Rob Calarco announced today plans to host a set of five town hallstyle meetings throughout the 7th Legislative District over the next six months. The meetings will include a short PowerPoint presentation highlighting the major activities of the County Legislature during 2012; however the primary focus of the forums will be to engage residents in a discussion of communityspecific issues. “The Community Forums are designed to give folks an opportunity to hear a little bit about what has been going on in the County, but more importantly – it’s a chance for us to get together and discuss issues going on in each individual community. What’s important to the people living in Medford may be different than what matters to Patchogue residents – it’s about having a conversation to
see what local government can do to improve our communities,” said Legislator Calarco. Other local elected officials are invited to the Legislator’s Community Forums as well. Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, Town Councilman Tim Mazzei and Town Councilwoman Connie Kepert are confirmed to attend the inaugural meeting, the Medford Community Forum set for January 23rd at 7:30 p.m. at the Medford Fire House. In addition to the Medford meeting, between January and June Legislator Calarco intends to host Community Forums in East Patchogue, North Patchogue, Patchogue Village, and Gordon Heights. Specific dates will be announced as they are set. “Too often you have every single elected official hosting his
own roundtables and community meetings, rather than trying to combine efforts to make things easier for taxpayers. I am serious about using government to solve community problems and enrich our neighborhoods, which is why it makes sense to bring other elected officials – regardless of their party affiliations – to the table. I want the people who attend the Community Forums to get as much useful information as possible and bringing other elected representatives to the meetings will help achieve that goal,” Legislator Calarco stated. The first Community Forum is scheduled for January 23rd, 2013. It will start at 7:30 p.m. and will take place at the Medford fire House located at 71 Oregon Avenue. Superstorm Relief
In a true expression of how Americans pull together in times of disaster and heartache, the Sandy superstorm has brought together people and resources from across the region, and the nation, to help those in need. One prime example is the community of Scarborough, Maine, and how Holly Lancaster, her children and friends raised over $1,200, to purchase gift cards for affected residents of the Connetquot School District! Mrs. Lancaster coordinated her community’s efforts with Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) Student Council Advisor Mrs. Christine Valente. Ronkonkoma Middle School collected over $2,500, before this generous Scarborough, Maine, donation! According to Mrs. Valente “… there are 22
Connetquot families that have been displaced as a result of the damage caused by this terrible superstorm. The RMS family, including many extracurricular clubs, presented the YFS (Youth & Family Services) coordinator at the Idle Hour Elementary School with a check for $2,500 to help families in need.” Mrs. Valente also presented a box, shipped by Mrs. Lancaster, which included $1,200 in gift cards to be used at Target, Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Lowes stores! Holly Lancaster is the sister of Ronkonkoma Middle School teacher Heidi Edmonds. Lancaster contacted her sister asking how her family could help. As a result Holly organized the fund raiser at a local (Scarborough, ME) Citgo station. She promoted the event using Facebook, collected $1,200, and
continues to collect money, toys and clothing to be sent after the Thanksgiving weekend. RMS Principal Mr. Charles D. Morea has expressed his gratitude to the entire Ronkonkoma community for its Sandy Relief efforts, but singled out Holly Lancaster, Heidi Edmonds and Mrs. Valente for their generous dedication. Mrs. Edmonds is certainly grateful to her sister and friends, but also singled out her nephews David and Drew who helped their mom Holly with her generous effort to help the Connetquot residents that have suffered at the hands of hurricane Sandy. A sincere Connetquot ‘Thank You’ to all who have participated in the many ‘Sandy Hurricane Relief’ programs. And a very ‘long distance’ thank you to our new friends in Scarborough, Maine!
Thanksgiving Feast Dr. Gail Cholden, Principal of Connetquot’s Arthur Premm Alternative Pre-school, welcomed excited parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters to the 2012 Thanksgiving Feast! Students proudly marched into the classroom where their family members had been patiently waiting … and trying to fit into their tiny desk seats! Dressed
as Native Americans and Pilgrims, the students would sing several animated holiday songs before joining their families for fabulous home-made pies! Proud family members snapped away with their cameras as their excited youngsters put on their Thanksgiving show! After the performance, students joined their families for the annual Thanksgiving
Feast of healthy drinks and holiday treats. The classroom and tables were colorfully decorated in a Thanksgiving theme, as the students and families enjoyed a tasty feast. Congratulations to Arthur Premm’s little Pilgrims and Native Americans. The preschoolers wish the entire community a Happy Thanksgiving!
