A dedicated group of students from St. Joseph’s College (SJC) are opting for an alternative spring break close to home this year, and will spend the week of April 1st through 5th aiding in recovery efforts for local communities that were destroyed earlier this year by Superstorm Sandy. Partnering with organizations such as the Gray Beards, Tunnel to Towers and Sandy Relief Long Beach, students will stay close to home to work in Long Beach, Far Rockaway, Breezy Point and Staten Island, some of the hardest hit areas in New York and New Jersey.

This past October, Superstorm Sandy, the deadliest and most destructive storm of the 2012 hurricane season, flooded homes, streets, tunnels and subway lines, destroyed property and left thousands without power. The storm affected countless individuals,

including many members of the SJC community.

Now, nearly five months later, SJC students, alumni, faculty and staff are eager to assist those still suffering and decided to cancel trips they had

planned to volunteer in other locations around the country.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan How many songs do you have on your iPod? Do you even listen to half of them?

And what about that CD collection? Is it gathering dust on some rack or – better yet – packed away in a box with all the other electronics of yesteryear? You know, next to the famous 8-tracks, cassettes, VHS tapes and vinyl that everyone seems in such a rush to get rid of.

Personally, I will never discard my CD collection.

In fact, while in the process of shopping for a TV stand/ entertainment center, one of my main criteria was finding a piece with enough shelving to accommodate

my massive music collection.

Sure, most of my favorite songs are already stored on my computer, my iPod, my iPhone…but still, there’s nothing quite like putting on a CD and listening to the tracks in sequence – back when an album was an entire concept, rather than a string of hit singles thrown together.

I can understand the attachment people have to their records – to anything that encapsulates a moment in time in their respective lives, really.

I have a hard time throwing anything out – mostly for sentimental reasons – hence the massive collection of CDs… and books…and videos… and knick-knacks. Sure, some are obsolete and serve no real

purpose – but they’re mine.

They each have a story and a memory associated with them and, even if I’ve outgrown the need to display certain mementos, you can bet they will be carefully packed away in a box sooner than kicked to the curb.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m by no means a hoarder, nor will you ever see three quarters of the things I have meticulously catalogued and saved through the years out in the open – as long as they are stored away for safe-keeping, ready to reminisce over whenever the moment strikes.

As for my CDs, I just can’t bear to put them away in a box. Not yet. Good thing my wall unit has shelves.

The Long Island Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.) today honored dedicated officers at their Annual Law Enforcement Recognition Luncheon for their efforts in eliminating drunk and drugged driving.

Among the honorees was Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff Greg Turzer, who, at 28 years old, is a 10-year veteran of the United States Army and was recently named Suffolk’s “Top Cop” for 2012. D/S Turzer made 108 DWI arrests last year as a member of the Sheriff’s Highway

Enforcement Section. He holds the record for the highest number of DWI arrests in all of Suffolk County for the year 2012, and made a quarter of the total number of DWI arrests made by Suffolk’s deputies. The Section made an impressive 416 DWI arrests in 2012 while patrolling the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway, and was also honored by M.A.D.D. during today’s ceremony.

Suffolk Sheriff Vincent DeMarco offered praise to all the deputies for their excellent work in

patrolling the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway, and had this to say about D/S Turzer’s service: “I’m especially proud to have Deputy Sheriff Greg Turzer on our team, and thank him for his service to Suffolk County residents and to our nation. I can say without hesitation that lives have been saved due to his tenacity in tracking down drunk and drugged drivers, and I couldn’t be more proud of his extraordinary record.”

The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. (APDA) is hard at work in Suffolk County helping to Ease The Burden And Find The Cure. Founded more than 51 years ago, the APDA continues to help those affected by this disease.

The American Parkinson Disease Association Information & Referral Center of Suffolk County offers support groups, educational events, literature and referrals to those afflicted with Parkinson Disease.

“Parkinson Disease can be devastating to those who are afflicted and their families” says Julie Garofalo, R.N., Coordinator for the APDA Information & Referral Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. “There has been extensive research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical treatments to help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure.” More research is needed, she said.

Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can include a decrease in spontaneous movement,

“The documentary was a great representation of several deaf individuals’ experiences throughout their life with oppression within their family, education and everyday life,” said Ricciardi. “They overcame these challenges like every minority has.

My goal for this day was to spread some more deaf awareness throughout East Islip High School so that more of the students can be aware that American Sign Language is not only a language but a big part of the deaf culture and community. This will hopefully bring together the hearing students with the deaf students from the Cleary School for the Deaf.”

On Wednesday, March 6th, the Phyllis Rose Dance Company presented a Hispanic Heritage program at the school auditorium, while Latin dancers with fleet feet entertained students in the library on Thursday, March 7th, teaching them how to dance salsa. “They explained to the students how passionate they were about their profession and the time, dedication and sacrifices that come along with achieving a goal,” said Spanish teacher Patricia Childs.

The program culminated on Friday, March 8th, with the annual International Cafe in the library, offering international beverages; waffles prepared by the French students; a selection of pizza, gelato and pastries, for Italy; and pupusas, empanadas, and rice and beans representing Spain. “The members of the Foreign Language Honor Society worked nonstop taking care of orders,” said Childs.

“They changed money for euros, delivered food from the kitchen to the library, and served gelato, rice and beans, as well as all kinds of traditional foods from different countries. All the foreign language teachers also worked diligently to make sure the day ran smoothly. The week was an absolute success.”

Flowers are budding, which signals two things: Spring is here and it’s time to celebrate Earth Day with community enhancing projects. Keep Islip Clean is the local sponsor of these April events collectively known as the Great American Cleanup, the nationwide effort designed

by Keep America Beautiful.

Earth Day 2013 marks the 24th consecutive year of KIC’s involvement in the Great American Cleanup and there are a number of ways to participate.

KIC organizes major litter cleanup events throughout Islip Township that all residents may join and also encourages people to form groups to enhance their own neighborhoods and public spaces.

Volunteers often work in related activities such as beautification, recycling drives, graffiti paint-outs

and student art contests.

A KIC representative is available to meet with grade school children to discuss fun ways to keep our planet clean and green.

KIC supports all endeavors by providing supplies, acting as a liaison with Town of Islip services and offering general assistance where needed.

The foreign language department at East Islip High School celebrated Foreign Language Week with a dizzying array of events, beginning on Monday, March 4th, with students announcing the weather report in three different foreign languages taught in East Islip: French, Italian and Spanish. Each day the teachers and students participated in activities that highlighted the cultures of France, Italy and Spain as well as American Sign Language, reinforcing target language skills and an appreciation of the beauty of these cultures through dance, food and media presentations.

As part of Foreign Language Week, an American Sign Language Day event on Tuesday, March 5th, was held all day at the school library, hosted for the third year in a row by American Sign Language teacher Jovina Ricciardi and her advanced sign language class. “There were three different sections in the library where all the foreign language students would rotate around to get more familiar with ASL and deaf culture,” explained Ricciardi. The first section contained song interpretations in American Sign Language in which several of her advanced students

Stepping Up To Help

Sunrise Toyota announced today that it will be sponsoring A Night of Song and Dance at The Gateway Playhouse on Sunday, April 28th. The benefit event will consist of a buffet and silent auction at 5 p.m., followed by a dance performance at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds go to a local Long Island family in need.

Deb Cordaro’s on-going battle with cancer has been causing financial stress for her and her family of Ridge. When Jimmy Berg,

owner of Sunrise Toyota heard of the Cordaro’s situation, he immediately wanted to help the family.

In addition to sponsoring the benefit, Berg agreed to donate a loaner vehicle from Sunrise Toyota, which was picked up Saturday the 23rd, so the family could take advantage of a timeshare they received for this week’s Spring Break in Florida.

While the family is on their “Sunrise Voyage,” Berg is also donating a

portion of every vehicle sold at Sunrise Toyota to the family to help offset the cost of medical treatment.

The Cordaro’s “Sunrise Voyage” will be featured on Sunrise Toyota’s Facebook page, so everyone can experience the voyage.

Students and staff in Joan Dlouhy and James Connell’s Journalism and Newspaper Club recently attended the 2013 Quill Awards hosted by Adelphi University in Garden City.

Students from across Long Island attended the event, which annually recognizes the outstanding talents of local student journalists.

East Islip High School’s student newspaper, The Broadcaster, has had long-standing success at these and other reputable

contests, and this year did not disappoint.

Two members of the Broadcaster staff took home awards. Cartoonist Nicole Caico won second place in editorial cartooning, while Jennifer Omland, the paper’s layout editor, took third place in layout. Other Broadcaster staffers attending the Quill Awards ceremony were Editor-in-Chief Sarah Schreiner, Sports Editors Matthew Ferremi and Dan Lombardi, copy editors

The first-grade production of The Day the Sky Fell at Connetquot Elementary School on March 7th served to meld art, music and science.

Co-taught by first-grade teacher Susan Stewart and music teacher Eileen Egbert, the assembly continued the school’s commitment to the goals of the Common Core State Standards.

In this musical adaptation of the classic Chicken Little story, The Sky Is Falling, the students chanted, “Oh my, the sky is falling,” whenever Chicken Little and her friends announced the impending doom of

the sky. “Of course it was only an acorn,” explained Egbert. “How perfect was that for science?”

Under the guidance of Stewart, the students had studied the life cycle and growth of acorns as they transform into mighty oak trees. Each student made a picture of an acorn that was utilized in the show’s sets.

Later during the musical, students portraying the Three Sunflowers sang a song by themselves, describing the attributes of a good king. Lines like “He always makes his bed” brought chuckles from the audience, and the play’s King eventually learned all

about falling acorns from a sweet little squirrel.

At the musical’s finale, the King proclaimed that all was right in the world, and announced that the cast would have a picnic under a rainbow to celebrate. The first-graders had created rainbow hand-prints beforehand to adorn the front of the stage, making a perfect backdrop for the ensemble’s rendition of “The Rainbow Song” in English, American Sign Language and (for the last verse) Spanish.

Culinary Challenge

PENNIES PROGRAM - Bay Shore Middle School Junior Honor Society students are currently fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s School and Youth Program Pennies for Patients. During this time, students visit advisory rooms in the morning and then donate their lunch periods to sit outside the cafeterias and collect donations for blood cancer research and patient care. The event runs for three weeks.

East Islip Middle School family and consumer science teacher Patricia Emmons Fritz hosted the school’s 1st Annual Mystery Basket Culinary Challenge on February 13th.

In the frantic, festive food competition, 32 middle school students organized into eight teams to compete, pooling their resources to develop a recipe involving vegetables, potatoes and beans that would dazzle the judges’ palates.

“The competition was a real-life lesson in teamwork,” said Fritz.

“The excitement in the classroom was boiling over and according to the judges, the potato dishes tasted fabulous!”

“I had the opportunity

to observe these FACS students compete for this challenge,” said East Islip High School Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer, who served as one of the event’s four judges. “They were all busy working on creating their own special food dish. The students were provided the ingredients and required to be creative in producing a tasty and presentable dish for the judges. The students were very excited and enjoyed the competition – and the opportunity to eat all the food after the judging was completed. Mrs. Fritz did a great job putting this event together.”

The other Culinary Challenge judges were East Islip Board of Education trustee Kim G.

Phillips, East Islip High School student Brandon Cortez, and Margret McGlone Gurlides, the assistant director of food and nutrition at Plainview Hospital.

The team that took home the top prize were the quartet of Alyssa Ali, Brianna Fiorello, Julia Lambert and Autumn Nelson. Their winning dish consisted of potatoes with a Mexican flavor, adorned with olives, corn and avocado.

The winners went on to represent East Islip Middle School at this year’s Long Island Junior Iron Chef challenge on March 16 at Whole Foods Market in WACKY WEDNESDAY - Timber Point Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss and Read Lake Grove.

The Employment Connection

United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk’s “The Employment Connection” has been awarded an employment training grant from Bank of America. The grant funds will enable “The Employment Connection” to provide a 30 hour, approved national curriculum

group course in Customer Service, resulting in a National Professional Certification in Customer Service.

The curriculum will address soft skills training for individuals with disabilities and prepare them for customer interactions in the workplace. This certification is recognized

by many employers nationwide.

After successful completion of the course, resume preparation and job placement assistance will also be offered.

“The Employment Connection is able to offer this Customer Service Certification program to 25 individuals with disabilities looking to

return to the workplace, thanks to the generosity of Bank of America,” said Pat Caso, Director of Adult Day Services at UCP of Suffolk.

The second course begins on April 16th and is open to qualified individuals with disabilities, and is suitable for adults and veterans with disabilities looking

to re-enter the workforce.
