The 5th Annual Long Island Run For The Warriors® will be held on Saturday, October 20th.

Each year, this race is completed by nearly 2,000 runners and walkers from Long Island, all who honor and support the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes. This year, participants will be joined by two ReWalkers who will utilize new cutting edge technology to complete the 1-mile Walk event.

Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc.

During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play.

Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.

The Concussion Act of NYS

The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician.

• Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play.

MAKING A CLINICAL DETERMINATION • Symptoms: somatic (e.g. headache, nausea, dizziness), cognitive (e.g. feeling in a fog), and/or emotional (e.g. liability)

• Behavioral changes: irritability, personality changes • Cognitive impairment: Hard time concentrating, trouble remembering, not feeling themselves, being confused, thinking speed slowed down, taking a longer time to react • Sleep disturbance: drowsiness, insomnia GRADUATED RETURN TO PHYSICAL EXERTION AND ACTIVITY OR RETURN TO PLAY (RTP) This is a six step gradual return to activity. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further.

RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group.

The two ReWalkers will participate in the 1-mile Walk and this will be the first time each participates in this type of an event utilizing the exoskeleton-assisted walking device.

One of the participants

is Theresa Hannigan, a former Army Sergeant who served during the Vietnam era and was left paralyzed two years ago as a result of a progressive autoimmune disease which she contracted while in the Army.

Hannigan has been training with the ReWalk at the National Center of Excellence for the Medical Consequences of Spinal Cord Injury at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center, Bronx, NY. She plans to use the exoskeleton walk the 1mile road race to raise money for the organization Hope For The Warriors®.

Boat Burning The Long Island Maritime Museum recently announced that their 22nd Annual Boat Burning will take place on Friday, October 26th from 5 to 9 p.m. The rain date is October 27th. The Boat Burning, which is held on the grounds of the museum, marks the height of fall with an event for the entire family.

Admission will be $5, with children under five free.

Each year, the Museum receives a donation of a large, wooden boat that is in a condition of being beyond repair. Loosely based on the Norse tradition of a Viking

Funeral, the boat is placed in the center of the museum’s property and set ablaze by the West Sayville Fire Department to the delight of the many families in attendance.

“This unique annual event has become a fall tradition in our community,” said the Museum’s Executive Director Steve Jones. “In addition to hosting Long Island’s largest bonfire, it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase the outstanding work that our boat shop volunteers do, by raffling off one of their beautiful creations.”

Educational and transitional services information for Veterans will also be available at the Open House. Financial aid representatives will discuss the grants and loans process, as well as the many scholarships available at Suffolk.

Members of the admissions staff will be in attendance to guide students and parents through the admissions process and to answer questions. The Open House program also includes useful information for recentlyaccepted students, who will have the opportunity to learn more about placement testing, academic advisement and financial aid.

“Whether you have already been accepted to Suffolk County Community College or are a prospective student, making a personal visit to a campus is critical to the college decision making process,” said Joanne E. Braxton, Suffolk’s Dean of Enrollment. “We welcome students and their families to join us at our upcoming Open House, where they will find a dynamic overview of the academic programs and student support services available at the College. They will also have the opportunity

to tour the campus with student guides, who are available to answer questions based upon their own experience as students.”

In light of the increased demand for access to community colleges, the best way to secure admission to Suffolk County Community College for the spring 2013 semester is to attend Open House and apply for admission early.

Smithtown Cooperative Nursery School, newly nominated as one of the “Best of Long Island” nursery schools, held their first Pajama Movie Night of the 2012-2013 school year on October 5th in The Big Room.

While the school has held Movie Nights in the past including the showing of movies like Rio, Frosty the Snowman (around the holidays) and Toy Story 3, the first of this year’s Movie Nights was dedicated to the power of great literature.

The evening was a huge success thanks to all the families that joined in watching the stories of beloved and award winning children’s author, Mo Willems.

Students saw the classic stories of Knuffle Bunny, Leonardo, the Terrible Monster and Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus come to life on the big screen. Each family that purchased tickets in advance received a FREE Mo Willems book to take home with them. Children were greeted with coloring pages of the characters from Mo

Willems books as they entered to get them in the Mo Willems spirit before the movie began!

The evening gave students in the school, along with family, friends and community members the chance to enjoy a fun night filled with free milk and cookies, pillows and blankets and pajamas!

Parents got an opportunity to socialize with other parents as their children enjoyed the film filled with humor and laughter.

Refreshments and other snacks were available for purchase at the concession stand manned by our supportive members. All proceeds went right back to the students in order to benefit the non-profit, non sectarian Smithtown Cooperative Nursery School.

At the end of the evening, there were some tired children who, already in pajamas, were all set to fall asleep on the car ride home. The success of the evening brought new and past members, community members, families and

friends together for a great time!

The children will be talking about Mo Willems, his fantastic books and this movie night event for a long time! The next Movie Night will take place during the holidays.

Thursday, October 4th, The Smithtown-Sunrise Rotary Club guest speaker was Dr. Alexander Epelbaum, MD, Board Certified Urologist with Island Urological Care, 373 Route 111 in Smithtown.

His presentation was about the importance of early detection of prostate cancer in saving lives. Dr. Epelbaum stated that the largest prostate cancer screening study, the European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer (ERSPC), updated March 2012, found that with prostate cancer screening, death by prostate cancer dropped 38%, compared to those who did not undergo

prostate cancer screening.

He further stated that early detection is critical to the success of prostate cancer treatments. Men should have an opportunity to make an informed decision about prostate cancer screening.

A decision on how best to test for and treat prostate cancer should be between a man and his doctor...adding that we should not allow the government to deny your ability and right to choose your health care destiny.

Grant Won The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services to support its addiction services in Suffolk County, thanks to the efforts of NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. Specifically, the grant funds the expansion of LICADD’s Start2Stop

program, which provides drug and alcohol information, solutionfocused counseling, peer support and treatment referrals to local residents of all ages.

Start2Stop is a professionally facilitated support group that helps participants explore their substance abuse experiences and attitudes about drugs and alcohol,

learn more about the biological/social and p s y c h o l o g i c a l consequences of use and understand the impact such use has had, and will have on their lives and relationships. The twelve week psycho-educational program is designed for individuals who have had some involvement with drug and/or alcohol use, but may not yet be ready

to seek treatment or live a substance-free life.

Participants may have experienced personal or professional consequences of their substance use, or may have been arrested for a non-violent low-level offense that involved the use of alcohol and/or illegal substances. The group is also perfect for those who are awaiting placement into inpatient

Eisenhower Park was filled with the laughter of more than 700 pediatric cancer survivors and family members who gathered for the inaugural Les Nelkin Pediatric Cancer Survivors’ Day hosted by Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) of New York. They cheered as the event’s keynote speaker, New York Giants’ linebacker Mark Herzlich talked about his own successful battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.

When he was diagnosed at age 21 before starting his senior year at Boston College, Mr. Herzlich was told that he would not be able to play football again and may never run again.

“I decided that I wasn’t going to let cancer beat me,” Mr. Herzlich told fellow survivors. His dream of playing football pushed him to not just be a survivor, but to “be a thriver.” A three-year cancer survivor who won a Super Bowl ring with the Giants in February during his rookie season, he encouraged attendees to “fulfill your dreams.”

They included Tracy Vicere, who is celebrating 22 years of survivorship after being diagnosed at age 16 with two different types of cancer, Hodgkin’s Disease and NonHodgkin’s Lymphoma.

CCMC was her home away from home for months.

Despite the difficulties of treatment, she had the support of her family and made many great friends with the hospital staff and her team of doctors. “I felt I was saved for a reason and am thankful to give back to Cohen through my foundation, Friends and Angels: The Tracy Vicere Foundation,” she said. The foundation hosts fundraisers to benefit the Division of Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at CCMC. As a leading center of pediatric oncology, CCMC sees approximately 200 new cases of childhood cancer every year. Thanks to improvements in

c h e m o t h e r a p y, radiotherapy and surgery, there are more than 300,000 children, teens and young adults in the United States who are survivors of childhood cancer and require ongoing care. To help meet the complex needs of survivors, CCMC pediatric oncologist hematologist Jonathan Fish, MD, created the Survivors Facing Forward Program (SURFF). “Though we cannot choose our challenges,” Dr. Fish said, “Survivors Facing Forward will help survivors face the unique concerns ahead, and will advocate for your wellbeing and serve as a resource.” Survivors also know the importance of a positive attitude, a fact evident in the smiles of the hundreds present.

Youth Waterfowl Program Long Island’s 15th Annual Youth Waterfowl Program, open to young hunters ages 12 to 15, will be held October 20th, November 10th and November 11th. This program is made possible through DEC’s collaboration with the New York Conservation Officers Association, Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, Shikar Safari Club International, Ducks Unlimited and South Shore Waterfowlers Association.

The Youth Waterfowl Program, an instructional course, is set for October 20th. Youth Waterfowl Days, specially designated hunting days, are set for November 10th and 11th.

The Youth Waterfowl Program is a special event to help junior hunters prepare for and participate in the Youth Waterfowl Days.

The program includes instruction in: · Hunting ethics and regulations

· Waterfowl identification · Firearms safety review · Retriever and decoy use · Cold water survival and boating safety · Trap shooting Certified Sportsman Education Instructors, as well as DEC Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs), will be present to guide participants through the program and help the youth hunters become part of the long tradition of waterfowl hunting on Long Island.

All new applicants must attend an instructional day at Hubbard County Park in Flanders on October 20th, which will qualify them for the option of hunting at Hubbard County Park in Flanders or Southaven County Park in Yaphank on November 10th.

Participants must be 12 to 15 years of age by November 10th, have completed a hunter education course by

October 20th, possess a junior (small game) hunting license by November 10th, and must be registered with the Harvest Information Program (HIP).

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. extended heartfelt gratitude for Senator Johnson’s many

years of support of the Long Island For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Program. At the tournament, Senator Johnson was pleased to join with SBPLI Executive Director Joani Madarash and Chairman Hans Zobel as SBPLI received a $25,000 grant from the

Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc. The grant will ensure that SBPLI will be able to continue to host the Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), which hosts 50 schools from Long Island, the metropolitan New York area and other states.

Community Assessment emergency housing and Medicaid. In addition, the Hispanic/Latino population continues to grow, increasing the need for access to programs for English language learners.

Suffolk County also reports an increase in the child abuse and maltreatment reports in Suffolk County; perhaps a reflection of economic stress on families and the need for support services.

The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Starts (CCHS), with centers in Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma, provides services for families residing in 13 school districts in Central Suffolk County. Families are eligible based on household incomes that are below the federal

poverty line. Homeless and foster children, and children with disabilities, are also eligible. In addition to a high-quality and structured classroom experience, children benefit from health and nutrition services, family involvement, parent training and strong relationships with local school districts, thus aiding their transition to Kindergarten.

According to the 2009 Long Island Index research report prepared by the Rauch Foundation, early childhood education “prepares children for school, and when provided in a high quality program, it can reduce grade repetition, drop out rates and juvenile delinquency.”

The report further explains that high quality programs can lower future costs that the public school would otherwise assume.

The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Start, a federally funded comprehensive early childhood program for income eligible families, recently released the results of its annual community assessment.

The assessment measures trends related to poverty, hunger, health, employment and housing status in Suffolk County.

The information gathered enabled the Children’s Community Head Start to modify and enhance its programs and to plan services that meet the needs of the community.

This year’s community assessment found that families are struggling in suburbia in the wake of the recession taht began in 2007. The county is e x p e r i e n c i n g unprecedented rates of poverty, home f o r e c l o s u r e s , unemployment and high demand for food stamps,
