Mr. Rizzacasa explained the impact that the Mt. Pleasant Pennies for Patients fundraiser was having and how their efforts were helping to find a cure for leukemia and lymphoma. Guest speaker Will Hermes, Senior Critic, Rolling Stone Magazine and author of Love Goes to Buildings on Fire: Five Years in New York that Changed Music Forever (Faber and Faber, 2011) will address the audience from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. on the topic of Digital Humanities in Music and Popular Culture.

“Conversations in the Disciplines” is an ongoing program sponsored by the State University’s Faculty Senate. All SUNY institutions are eligible to submit a proposal for up to $5,000 to bring together members of the State University with leading scholars to explore

a timely issue. Since 1965, over 450 events have been sponsored.

Last year, topics included child health outcomes, aging families, memory and emotions, women in photography and film, digital documentary, and higher education’s role in international relations.

These conversations were held at Binghamton University, Stony Brook University, Buffalo, Purchase, and Albany. The State University Faculty Senate scores proposals based on five criteria: Facilitation of Scholarly Exchange, Feasibility, Participants, Benefits, and Budget.

The conference is $20 for the general public.

A faculty team from the Michael J. Grant Campus of Suffolk County Community College has been selected to receive a $5,000 Conversations in the Disciplines (CID) Award from the State University of New York (SUNY). The award will be used by the campus when it serves as the host location for a conference entitled Digital Humanities and the Transformation of Scholarship.

The conference will take place on Friday, April 5th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Sagtikos Arts and Science Building. The University Faculty Senate Committee on Programs and Awards evaluates CID submissions and recommends awards to the University Provost.

Suffolk was the only community college to receive an award this year.

Walk like an Egyptian and make your way to Hofstra’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse, where for the first time, the Bard’s Antony and Cleopatra will be performed as part of the University’s Annual Shakespeare Festival, from March 14th through 24th. One of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, the play is grounded in the historical facts of one of history’s most famous romantic couples.

Antony and Cleopatra features direction by James J. Kolb. Show times are Thursday, March 14th at 8 p.m.; Fridays, March 15th and 22nd at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, March 16th and 23rd at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, March 17th and 24th at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12, $10 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive two free tickets with their current HofstraCard. In his director’s notes, Dr. Kolb points out that Antony and Cleopatra features several themes known to recur in Shakespearean works. One is the tension of the “other� – or between conventional and unconventional. Cleopatra was “other� by way of her race (Greek/Egyptian) and also by the fact that she was a great and influential ruler in a world dominated by men. Additionally, the juxtaposition of West vs. East, masculine vs. feminine, Roman coldness and rationality vs. Egyptian passion and heat are all examples of Shakespeare’s exploration of the antithesis in his works.

Each Hofstra Shakespeare Festival comprises multiple performances: the fulllength Shakespearean play, a shorter dramatic piece

and the “Festival Musicale,� a concert by the Hofstra Collegium Musicum, an ensemble from the Music Department devoted to the performance of early music. The Festival Musicale includes a chorus and ensembles of historical instruments. This year’s Festival Musicale, directed

by Professor of Music William E. Hettrick, is StarCrossed Lovers, featuring guest artist Christopher Morrongiello, lute.

The companion play is This Bud of Love, a one-hour version of Romeo and Juliet, an excellent introduction to the works of William Shakespeare, suitable for young theatergoers. This is the sixth year that a one-hour adaptation of a Shakespearean work has been performed as part of the Festival. This Bud of Love was adapted from Romeo and Juliet by Hofstra Adjunct Professor of English Maureen Connolly McFeeley and is directed by Professor of Drama Cindy Rosenthal.

Star-crossed Lovers and This Bud of Love will be performed on Saturday, March 16th, at 2 p.m. at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse. Tickets are $11, $8 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated nonHofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket with current HofstraCard.

There will also be a special performance of This Bud of Love on Thursday, March 21st, at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $6. Members of the Hofstra community receive two free tickets with current HofstraCard.

Tickets for the Festival Musicale and companion play are also available through the Hofstra Box Office.

The cast and crew of This Bud of Love will also be touring local high schools in March. As with other companion play tours in the past, for many teens this is their first exposure

to a Shakespearean production. The tour also gives the Hofstra students the valuable experience taking a show on the road – and the tour is really something they have to manage logistically and artistically.

Notable casts over the years have included Phil Rosenthal, the creator and executive producer of Everybody Loves Raymond; Tony-nominees Tom McGowan and Peter Friedman; film and stage actor Joe Morton; film and television actresses Susan Sullivan, Margaret Colin and the late Madeline Kahn; and Tony-nominated Broadway director Susan Schulman, among many others. Steve Buscemi, Kyra Sedgewick and Brian Dennehy, who are not Hofstra alumni, performed in the Shakespeare Festival High School Competition as teenagers. Dennehy has said his brief experience in the Festival helped ignite his love for acting.

Little League Baseball and Softball, along with St. Joseph’s College will team up on Saturday, March 30th, to welcome Little League Softball players to Little League Softball Day. Little League Softball Day will be held at the Outdoor Athletic Complex, 246 Sunrise Highway South Service Road in Patchogue, home of St. Joseph’s College softball.

The Golden Eagles will host a game against Lehman College Lightning at 1 p.m.

Little Leaguers, their parents and local league volunteers are encouraged to attend the game.

The players will come dressed in their Little League uniform jerseys, and following the game will be permitted on to the field to meet the collegiate players and coaches.

“As a way of recognizing Little League Softball, and in appreciation of the college softball

experience, Little League International is reaching out to communities by having Little League Softball Days,” Stephen D. Keener, president and chief executive officer of Little League Baseball and Softball, said. “For the seventh straight year, this initiative will afford young athletes of all ages the chance to enjoy the game of softball at its finest. Back To Basics By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The more I drive, the more I realize how many truly incompetent motorists there are out there.

Let’s start with the basics.

If you come out to find snow accumulated on the roof of your car, CLEAN IT OFF. Those of us who have the misfortune of driving behind you would greatly appreciate it. I know you think you’re saving time, but honestly, they make rear windows transparent for a reason…you know, just in case you want to take a quick peek back there every now and then.

Once on the road, let’s review a few pointers… Shoulders of the road were made for the purpose of easing into and out of traffic while merging. Trust me, it’s a much better alternative than

practically standing on your brakes while in the right traffic lane as you suddenly realize your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph.

There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space.

Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words.

A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently

decided that he needed to be somewhere else, and proceeded to back up on the Service Road and cut his wheel, angling his car toward this aforementioned truck in the right lane…all the while, never shifting his gaze from the map.

With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been!

Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road.

More than 250 friends and family members attended the annual joyous musical event; the St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School and Catholic Charities Variety Show, Peace on Earth.

This event began with organizational meetings in October where students from SJB began working with residents from twelve different group homes. Together, they created up an act, choreographed dance numbers, rehearsed, designed sets and planned costumes.

One event attendee said, “I wish everyone could see this show. It was such a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and such a heartwarming show.” All proceeds of this event benefitted the St. John the Baptist Mission Outreach.

Sloan Research Fellowship have gone on to win 38 Nobel Prizes including Stony Brook University’s Paul C. Lauterbur (1965 Sloan Fellow, Stony Brook), 14 Fields Medals (mathematics) including Stony Brook University’s John W. Milnor (1955 Sloan Fellow, Princeton), and eight John Bates Clark Awards (economics).

Sloan Fellows may use their grants to pursue whatever lines of inquiry are of most interest to them, and they are permitted to use fellowship funds in a variety of ways to further their research including for such purposes as equipment, technical assistance, professional travel, trainee support and any other activity directly related to the Fellow’s research.

Professor Essig received a BSc and a BSc (Hons) in Physics and a BSc in Mathematics at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa; and earned his PhD in physics from Rutgers University. Luncheon A Success More than 900 people from across Long Island joined a “movement” on Wednesday, February 13th, by attending the hugely successful American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon at The Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement encouraged everyone in attendance to “Make it our Mission” to help save lives and take charge of their cardiovascular health and share the life-altering and life-saving information of the day with women they know.

The 2013 American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon is nationally sponsored by Macy’s and Merck. The

The color red was everywhere from women’s dresses to men’s ties. Rouven Essig, PhD, an Assistant Professor at the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook University, has been selected to receive a Sloan Research Fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. He is one of 126 awardees from 61 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada chosen for this prestigious honor, which comes with a $50,000 twoyear fellowship.

Professor Essig was selected based upon his distinguished performance and potential to make substantial contributions to physics. The Sloan Foundation recognizes Sloan Fellows as “rising stars” and the “next generation of scientific leaders.” He joins the ranks of 62 other Sloan Research Fellows from Stony Brook University that have received this honor before him.

“I am excited to be recognized with a Sloan Research Fellowship,” said Dr. Essig. “This fellowship will help me support the training of a graduate student, which will greatly aid my research program.”

Dr. Essig’s research program, broad in its scope but specific in its goals, is to maximize the opportunities to understand and discover the fundamental constituents of matter and their interactions.

His research involves particle physics at the cosmic, intensity and energy frontiers with two broad goals: to develop the theoretical implications

of the data being collected at dark matter detection experiments, at high-intensity beam experiments, and at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland; and to generate new ideas for experiments that can further understanding of the fundamental constituents of nature.

“I congratulate Rouven on this outstanding achievement,” said Dennis N. Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Stony Brook University. “His broad research program embracing the intensity, cosmic and energy frontiers, is at the forefront of particle physics research and the search for new laws of physics. We look forward to great discoveries from him in the future.”

“The Sloan Research Fellows are the best of the best among young scientists,” said Dr. Paul L. Joskow, President of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Since the program’s inception in 1955, the Sloan Foundation has awarded nearly $120 million in support of more than 4,200 early-career researchers.

Administered and funded by the Sloan Foundation, the fellowships are awarded in close cooperation with the scientific community.

To qualify, candidates must first be nominated by their peers, and are subsequently selected by an independent panel of senior scholars.

Explorer Day

Fourth graders at Smithtown Elementary recently participated in Explorer Day. Students dressed up as their designated explorer and presented their scrapbooks to enthusiastic parents and teachers.

Scrapbooks were filled with creative

representations of information about their explorers, including maps, diagrams, photographs, and captions to describe their explorer’s journey in vivid detail.

Students presented information in a wax museum style format, and the students “came to life”

in front of our eyes as they shared their knowledge about their explorer.

Students were eager to apply their knowledge of informational text features as they shared their scrapbooks.

It was a wonderful, informative day for all students involved.

Baseball Exhibit To Open The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce that it will host an exhibition featuring photographs from the early baseball career of Harold E. Goldsmith (18981985), one of Southold’s only professional baseball players.

The exhibition, entitled ‘Hal Goldsmith: Early Baseball Photographs, 1916-1929’ will be held at the Society’s exhibition building, The Reichert Family Center, in the Cosden Price Gallery.

A right-handed pitcher from Peconic, Long Island, Harold ‘Hal’ Goldsmith (1898-1985) was a St. Lawrence University graduate, and spent five years in the minor leagues before getting the call to join the Boston Braves in June of 1926. Some of the minor league teams he played for include the New Orleans Pelicans (1921), the Saginaw Aces (1922), the Providence Grays

(1925-26), and the Newark Bears (1928-29).

He joined the Boston Braves - who later moved to Atlanta - in 1926 and played there through 1928, when he was sent to back to the minors. While playing for the Braves in 1928 he participated in a spring training game in Florida against the New York Yankees, where he struck out not only respected outfielder Bob Meusel, but also the infamous Babe Ruth. Goldsmith played in the minors until the fall of 1929 when he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, but pitched just twice for the team before retiring as a player.

In retirement he spent over three decades coaching the aseball and basketball teams at his alma mater, Southold High School, winning a large number of regional and league championships.

While many locally

remember him fondly as the popular coach and teacher “Goldie,” this small exhibit focuses mainly on images from his college and professional baseball career between 1916 and 1929.

The exhibition will open to the public on Saturday, April 6th, 2013 and will remain on view through Saturday, May 18th, 2013. The Reichert Family Center and Cosden Price Gallery, where the exhibition will be held, is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m., and by appointment. The gallery is located at 54127 Route 25 in Southold, just west of Jeni’s Main Street Grill.

Game Farm Kicks Off Season This year, Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrates its 44th season with its grand opening on March 23rd. The park will be open Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the month of April. From May 1st to May 21st, the Game Farm will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

From alligators to zebra and scores of animals in between, the Long Island Game Farm has many interactive areas where guests can touch and, unlike most zoos, actually feed the animals!

The first weekend at the Game Farm kicks off with “Nature Nick’s Animal Adventures.” Each show features 10 to 12 animals from all corners of the world, many of them rare and exotic. He has appeared on numerous

TV shows, including “The Martha Stewart Show,” “The Wendy Williams Show,” “Petkeeping with Marc Morrone” and “Good Morning America.”

During the months of July and August, a weeklong children’s camp — Camp Zoo — will return.

The Salute To Senior Service program, sponsored by Home Instead, Inc., the franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care network, honors the contributions of adults 65 and older who give at least 15 hours a month of volunteer service to their favorite causes.

Nominations for outstanding senior volunteers will be accepted between February 1st and March 31st, 2013.

State winners then will be selected by popular vote at SalutetoSeniorService. com. Online voting will take place from April 15th to April 30th, 2013. From those state winners, a panel of senior care experts will pick the national Salute to Senior Service honoree.

Home Instead, Inc. will donate $500 to each of the state winners’ favorite nonprofit organizations and their stories will be posted on the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame. In addition, $5,000 will be donated to the

national winner’s nonprofit charity of choice.

To demonstrate the courage and persistence it takes to be “All in,” Gian Paul asked for volunteers from the audience. Not knowing what they were in for, eighth grader Margaret Riley and sixth grader Connor Kirschbaum stepped up to the plate.

Under Gonzalez’s direction,

they first performed regular pushups and then tried knuckle pushups, doing yeoman’s service.

Gonzalez further illustrated the point by telling a story told to him

by Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis about doing pushups daily since the age of nine.

“You won’t get success overnight,” Gonzalez said. “It takes courage, persistence, and time.”

Throughout the day, Gian Paul joined students in the cafeteria during their lunch periods to invite them to initial a poker chip as a reminder to be “All in,” just as he did with the New York Giants, inspiring them to turn a 7-7 season, in which they had lost the previous 5 out of 6 games, into a Lombardi Trophy.

Smithtown High School East Leadership asked everyone to stand up against bullying, promote kindness, and spread the love at their first P.S. I Love You Day held on February 8th.

New York Giants fans may recognize him as the man credited with sparking a turn-around last year that led to the team’s rallying cry, “All In” and their Super Bowl victory.

Gian Paul Gonzalez, founder of 4-One and Flight Club (organizations that help at-risk youth), turned down an MBA career to become a teacher at Jose Marti Freshman Academy in Union City, New Jersey. As a former Montclair State Basketball All-American and 2006 NJAC Male Athlete of the Year, Gonzalez’s message was powerful: be committed.

The Smithtown Teacher Center is a state grant funded organization dedicated to providing outstanding professional development to the teachers of the Smithtown Central School District. At their February 26 meeting, the Smithtown Board of Education honored Terry Arzillo for her 14 years of leadership serving as the Teacher Center’s Director.

Throughout her years as director, Terry was the backbone of the Teacher Center. She sought out the best in qualified

Caring Teens TERRIFIC TALENT SHOW - On Friday, March 1st, Dogwood Elementary had its annual talent show at Nesaquake Middle School. The evening was filled with entertaining acts that captivated the audience. One of the night’s favorites was a fiveboy (two fifth graders - Vincent and Mikey; two fourth graders - Jordan and Trevor; and one third grader - Anthony) dance group who performed Gangnam Style with plenty of style and pizazz. It was a night to remember. Great job to all the kids who displayed courage and class!

When Mikayla Guerin and Victoria Fondacaro found out that about a third of the homeless, living in shelters, are under the age of 18, they decided to do something. Mikayla and Victoria organized and ran a Teens for Jeans drive at Nesaquake Middle School, collecting a total of 123 blue jeans, more than any other middle school in the area.

Teens for Jeans began in 2008, when Aéropostale joined with Do Something,

a national not-for-profit youth organization, to raise awareness among teens about the one-third of homeless people living in shelters who are under the age of 18.

The stores agreed to serve as drop-off centers for lightly used jeans and bring them to local homeless shelters, and Do Something agreed to be the vehicle through which caring teens could sign on to participate in the annual Teens for Jeans campaign.

Do Something’s CEO is Nancy Lublin, who founded Dress for Success in 1996. The organization’s mission is to inspire young people to create a culture of volunteerism and activism via social change.

Mikayla and Victoria were inspired to do their part to provide homeless teens with jeans they otherwise could not afford.

Over one million pairs of jeans have been donated since the annual campaign began in 2008.

CELEBRATING DENTAL HEALTH - In celebration of Dental Health Month, Dr. and Mrs. Esposito visited Ms. Kinahan’s class at Dogwood Elementary School. The students learned about proper brushing, healthy foods and what to expect when they visit the dentist. Mrs. Esposito shared a book about visiting the dentist and the students sang The Tooth Decay Rap. The students enjoyed the visit and were excited to leave with a brand new toothbrush and toothpaste.

How do you invigorate student interest in chemistry beyond the confines of a classroom in order to encourage future STEM careers?

According to Ms. Zeitlin, Syracuse University Project Advance adjunct instructor of chemistry at Smithtown High School East, it is “by encouraging students beyond the pages of a textbook, and exposing them to cutting edge research relevant to today’s scientific enterprise.”

On February 15th, the SUPA chemistry students at Smithtown High School East attended a chemistry lecture as part of the Distinguished Lectures in Science & Engineering Series at Stony Brook University. The lecture, “Catalysis: Green Chemicals and Materials,” was a “wonderful way for students to learn ways that chemistry is part of our future and not just our history.”

Dr. Grubbs, a distinguished Atkins Professors of Chemistry at California Institute of Technology, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2005

for his exceptional body of work in metathesis reactions. He has more than 500 publications and 115 patents based on his pioneering work.

Dr. Grubbs spoke of the multitude of projects that his lab is currently engaged in, and highlighted the practical applications of his work.

From insect pheromones to replace insecticides to pharmaceuticals and fuels, catalysts play a key role in production processes.

According to his abstract, “As pressure for cleaner processes grow, new types of catalysts are required that open new ways to transform renewable carbon sources to fuels and products, and provide more sustainable products.”

The Smithtown East students had an opportunity to meet with Dr. Grubbs after his lecture during a reception held in the Wang Center. “Meeting scientists personalizes them, and encourages interest in STEM career choices,” said Ms. Zeitlin.

Students from Mrs. Culloton’s German classes had the opportunity to Skype with Christopher Byrne.

Chris is an 11th grader from Smithtown H.S. West

who is currently living and attending school in Niedersachsen, Germany for one year as a winner of the prestigious Congress Bundestag Scholarship.

Now in its 30th year,

the Congress Bundestag Scholarship is sponsored by the United States and Germany and was created as a way to strengthen ties between the United States and Germany.

Adopt-A-School

In response to Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, a program entitled Adopt A School was started by an elementary teacher to unite schools, clubs and teams in recovery efforts.

In January 2013, Smithtown Elementary School and Mills Pond Elementary School joined together to adopt the New

Visions School in Freeport.

Many students who attend the New Visions School had their houses destroyed or severely damaged in the storm. Many still do not have power or heat and are living in shelters.

Both Smithtown Elementary School and Mills Pond Elementary School collected winter

coats, accessories, gift cards and letters of encouragement to donate to the students at the New Visions School.

Students were also eager to send Valentine’s Day cards. It was their goal to bring some happiness to the lives of these students at this difficult time in their lives.

WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP - Michael Hughes carved his name in the record books of Smithtown West history late Saturday night at the Times Union Center. The 6-5, 250-pounder put the hold on Austin Coleman of Spencerport and pinned the Rochester senior in 2:30 to capture the state’s 285-pound wrestling crown. Hughes capped a brilliant senior career at High School West with his 31st pin on his way to a 42-0 record.

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS - Mt. Pleasant Elementary School Student Council recently welcomed Mr. Nick Rizzacasa to their school. He works with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and is also a leukemia survivor. Mr. Rizzacasa explained the impact that the Mt. Pleasant Pennies for Patients fundraiser was having and how their efforts were helping to find a cure for leukemia and lymphoma.

Smithtown Central School counselors at Nesaquake Middle School, Jennifer Harnett and Kimberly Richardson, Great Hollow Middle School, Tom Riviello, Sandy Stone and Marissa Urso and Accompsett Middle School, Nancy Koch and Emily Bootle, recently completed their Career Exploration Program with the 7th grade students.

The students explored

John Holland’s Theory of Career Choice, which states that if people choose an occupation that matched their personality type (or their Holland Code), they will experience a higher level of success and job satisfaction.

The students completed an on-line assessment to discover their personality type, or Holland Code, and stored that information on a newly created site on the

student portal. They will continue to work with John Holland’s Theory of Career Choice in 8th grade Family and Consumer Science and again in 10th grade.

Through the career planning site on the portal the students will be able to view how their personality type, or Code, has changed or remained the same over the years.
