Suffolk County Legislature Minority Leader John M. Kennedy Jr. commended the generous donors who stepped forward yesterday at his Emergency Hurricane Blood Drive to re-stock area blood banks in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Blood bank levels are at a dangerous low following blood collection disruption caused by Hurricane Sandy in November. Based on his record of consistently high yield blood drives, Long Island Blood Services recently contacted Legislator Kennedy and
requested that he hold an emergency blood drive to help restock area blood banks. Once again, Legislator Kennedy did not disappoint. Despite the emergency timing during the winter holidays, when many are off work and traveling, Legislator Kennedy’s Thursday blood drive at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge nevertheless yielded 64 prospective donors screened and a total of 53 pints donated. Each donated pint can help save up to three lives.
“I thank the generous donors who carved time out of their busy holiday season yesterday to help save the lives of fellow Long Islanders,” Legislator Kennedy said. “Yesterday’s successful blood drive is yet another inspiring example of the way that Suffolk County residents have pulled together to support neighbors suffering as a result of Sandy.” Including yesterday’s event, Legislator Kennedy’s 2012 blood drives yielded a total of 334 pints of blood donated to Long Island Blood Services. Since
Kennedy began hosting blood drives in 2007, his efforts have generated a total of 1,338 donate pints. “I would also like to commend the magnanimous local businesses that sponsored the blood drive through donations of food for the blood donors,” said Legislator Kennedy. “My thanks go out to Giorgio’s Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant of Nesconset, O Sole Mio Ristorante Pizzeria in Stony Brook, Insignia Steakhouse of Smithtown, Caffe Amici of Selden and Subway
on Commack Road in Commack.” Donated blood is constantly in demand to provide vital blood transfusions to area patients undergoing a wide variety of medical procedures and treatments. After all, whole blood has a shelf life of only 42 days. A local hospital requires, on average, 70 units of fresh, frozen plasma, 30 to 40 units of single-donor platelets and 400 to 500 units of red blood cells to meet its transfusion needs each month. New York Blood Center requires
over 2,000 volunteer blood donations each day to meet the transfusion needs of patients in close to 200 New York and New Jersey hospitals.

Relief Benefit Suffolk County Community College recently held a Hurricane Sandy Relief Benefit at the Van Nostrand Theatre on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. The purpose of the event was to raise financial support for the College Foundation Relief Fund. The benefit, which
included a night of live music and comedy entertainment, raised funds to provide assistance for members of the college community that need help replacing textbooks, computers or other electronic equipment, purchasing clothing and food, and covering costs associated with commuting

The BroadHollow name will be carried on by Robert O’Neill, who will serve as Executive Artistic Director, and who will continue the traditions of BroadHollow in the years to come. Patricia Zaback will remain on the board as a consultant. Hurricane Sandy ripped through many parts of Long Island devastating houses and people’s lives. Parents struggling to repair their homes, children being bused to other schools, wondered if Santa would be able to find them this Christmas. I hate learning new things. I do. Sure, it’s great to broaden your horizons and add skills to your repertoire, but the actual learning process? Not so much fun. I prefer to fast forward to the part where I miraculously become highly proficient at something (which sometimes never happens) rather than muddle for too long in the learning curve portion. The funny part is that, with most things, once this “curve” has been navigated, you often realize that the new thing you were so

holiday.” The event was held Tuesday, December 18th, and more than 100 children turned out for the heartwarming event. Some children asked Santa for a new home, because their homes had been destroyed by the storm. All left with toys, candy canes, a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Clause and stomachs full of hot chocolate, cupcakes and candy.

hesitant to take on wasn’t so bad in the first place. Simple, even. Just took a little getting used to, was all. Over time, we seem to be able to adapt to anything. Think about it. Look back on all your years in school… weren’t you nervous the first time being tested on a particular subject? Didn’t you get butterflies the morning of a big presentation? Wasn’t your initial reaction to any massive projects to immediately push them to the back of your mind and procrastinate? New = Frightening then, and it still does, to some extent, now.
They often say you should try one new thing each and every day – whether something as simple as tasting a new food, reading a new book or buying a new pair of jeans…right on up to the more monumental decisions of whether to search for a new job or buy a new house or travel the world. New = Exciting. It signifies growth, maturity, experience – all those things associated with moving onward and upward. Sometimes, all it takes is a little help navigating the curve to ultimately see the path for what it is – a straight line to improvement.

Deer Season To Open

January 7th, 2013 marks opening day for the special January shotgun season for deer hunting in Suffolk County, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reminded sportsmen and women today. Hunting areas have been expanded to include all of Suffolk County for the 2013 shotgun season to help manage an expanding deer population. January shotgun season runs from January 7th through January 31st, 2013, weekdays only. There is no deer hunting allowed on weekends during this special season in Suffolk County. In response to the upcoming expanded deer season, DEC’s E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation Officers (ECOs) will step up patrols to assure compliance with the regulations. “While we support the opportunities for our local
sportsmen and women to assist in the management of our whitetail deer resource, it is important that hunters do so lawfully and safely,” ECO Captain Timothy Huss said. DEC regulations require that lands eligible for deer hunting must be at least 10 acres in size, and hunters must possess a valid big game hunting license, a signed landowner’s endorsement and a town permit. Only shotguns loaded with a single slug and muzzleloaders are legal for use during the January season. Crossbows are no longer a legal hunting instrument in New York as of December 31, 2012. Hunters should check with local towns and villages to determine any local restrictions or discharge ordinances. Overpopulations of deer have the ability to negatively impact natural habitats along with agricultural, public
and private properties, and public health in the forms of automobile/deer collisions and tick-borne diseases. Hunting is DEC’s most effective and efficient known tool to maintain wildlife populations at levels that are compatible with communities and natural resources. Smithtown resident Krystin Brescia, a teacher at The Children’s Center of United Cerebral Palsy Association of Suffolk, has been named a 2012-2013 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners. A special feature highlighting Ms. Brescia will air on News 12 and she will be honored at a special dinner in the spring along with the other awardees.
After completing her student teaching requirements at The Children’s Center in 2004, Ms. Brescia was hired as a special education teacher. In dealing with students who have varying disabilities, including some who are nonverbal, visually or hearing impaired, and physically or mentally challenged, Krystin is both creative and sensitive to the learning styles of each student. She works individually with each child to ensure that they are positioned to achieve their goals and
gain independence. According to Sherri Glazier, Director of Education/Principal at The Children’s Center, “She is truly an advocate for her students. Ms. Brescia constantly and tirelessly seeks resources and opportunities to give her students real life experiences – such as recycling, money skills, math lessons and teamwork. Skills they will take with them when they graduate from our program. We are very fortunate to have her on our staff.”

5 Boro Bike Tour
Bike New York recently announced dates and details for the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour, held Sunday, May 5th, 2013. The Tour will be returning to a “rush” firstcthome, first-serve registration system which will open on Tuesday, January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. EST. Held annually the first Sunday in May, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is America’s largest cycling event with a 40 mile, traffic-free ride through all five boroughs for 32,000 cyclists. The Tour is co-produced by Bike New York, the city’s premiere bicycling organization, and the New York City Department of Transportation, in association with multiple City of New York departments. Proceeds from the event fund Bike New York’s education program “This annual springtime ritual --which keeps growing in popularity -- is simply the most exciting way to experience the dynamic, diverse neighborhoods in all five boroughs of our great city,” said Ken Podziba, President and CEO of Bike New York. “Bicyclists wait all year to feel the thrill and freedom of riding 40 miles on car-free streets, highways and bridges as they only can in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour.” 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour regular registration will be a “rush” registration system, similar to 2011 where the Tour’s first-come, first-serve registration system sold out in less than 24 hours. With the return to a rush system, Bike New York anticipates a similar sellout for the 2013 Tour. TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, will once again serve as title sponsor. “TD Bank is proud to continue sponsoring the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, the marquee cycling event in New York,” said Chris Giamo, Regional President, TD Bank. “We feel it is important to invest in our communities, and the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is a fun, environmentally friendly way to see the City while experiencing the TD Bank brand.” Those interested in participating in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour will have the opportunity to register starting on January 22 at 12:00 p.m. EST. Adults must register themselves individually. Youth registration will take place in conjunction with an individual adult registration. All youth registrations must maintain a one child to one adult ratio. Participants hoping to ride with friends and family will have the opportunity to link their registrations together after the event sells out. Bike New York has also partnered with onPeak to provide more options for out-of-town visitors to find accommodations with competitive rates at convenient
locations throughout the city. Details to convenient and affordable accommodations will be available during the registration process. Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City Bike New York, in partnership with the Giro d’Italia, is adding a new way to ride the TD Five Boro Bike Tour. This new VIP registration option will give riders the chance to test their limits, with a timed climb up the Verrazano Bridge. In addition, all Giro riders receive an exclusive Italian-made Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City jersey to wear during the event. Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City registration opens on January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. EST. It is only available for riders 18 years of age and older. “We’re excited to partner with the Giro d’Italia and bring two of the world’s largest cycling events together,” said Podziba. More details will be available in the following weeks. “Ride for a Reason” Charity Program Regular registration and the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City are not the only ways to ride in the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour. Relief Fund Donation In the wake of the destruction of Hurricane Sandy, American Roland Food Corp. has donated 620 cases (approximately 22,000 servings) of canned tropical fruit to Long Island Cares (The Harry Chapin Food Bank). Many of Roland Foods’ employees and partners in the Metro New York area were hit hard by the storm and this donation, in addition to a previous donation to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey immediately
after the storm, is part of an effort to give back to the communities that support Roland branded products all year long and to aid in the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. Ms. Schneider was overjoyed and surprised to see how many supplies we brought; they started immediately packing up the little string bags with supplies, getting a smile from some of the messages that they saw.” Mrs. Rhonda Pratt, Burr Intermediate Principal, hopes to establish an ongoing pen pal relationship between West Elementary School and Burr students in the future.
Eleven months ago, Major Andrew Espinoza had to say goodbye to his wife and two daughters when the Army National Guard Major (2nd Infantry Division) was deployed to Afghanistan to fight for freedom (Commack Courier March 2012 issue). “It was so sad when he left. I knew I wouldn’t get to see him for a long time,” said his daughter, Ava, a student in Michelle Goldstein’s third grade class at Sawmill Intermediate School.
“Now, it’s amazing to have him home. I missed him so much.” In honor of his homecoming, Mrs. Goldstein’s class threw him a surprise party. The students created a “Welcome Home” banner with red, white, and blue handprints. Each student prepared a letter decorated with Americanthemed pictures, which were read aloud to the Major. Hurricane Sandy caused the cancellation of many events across the tri-state area. Burr Intermediate School postponed its much anticipated PTA Halloween Extravaganza. The rescheduled event, renamed Halloween In November, was restructured as an opportunity to help those affected by the storm. Burr’s students typically make a craft during the event, a sling bag that is intended for trick or treating. This year, hundreds of Burr students decorated the canvas bags with inspirational words,

Although the constituents came to enjoy the music, they also came to donate food to help their neighbors in need. On August 8th, 2012 during the Third Annual Bloodfest held at Legislator John Kennedy’s office, 165 pounds of food was collected. Grants Awarded
A big local and national news story of 2012 was Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic Ocean hurricane on record, which created unprecedented destruction in New York and New Jersey in lost lives and property. Youth soccer organizations affiliated with the U.S. Youth Soccer have responded. Region 1 established a Disaster Relief Grant Program for Region 1 clubs/organizations that have suffered damage as a result of the storm. 20 grants, each up to $2,000, are being awarded. On the way to a total donation of $80,000, the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has given
$46,000 in checks to its needy clubs. The money has already been sent to those needy clubs in the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) and Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) for Hurricane Sandy Relief. Additionally, the LIJSL has established a Disaster Relief Fund Program of $125,000 for its members/ clubs that suffered damage as a direct result from Hurricane Sandy. Approved funds are available to be awarded. In order to be eligible to receive a LIJSL Hurricane Sandy Fund, the individual or club must be an affiliated organization with the LIJSL, ENYYSA

The East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) was not as affected by Hurricane Sandy as its downstate neighbors so they have graciously donated $4,000 to the SIYSL and $2,000 to the LIJSL. While all these good works continue, a for-profit company, SportsSignup in Saratoga Springs, made a $10,000 donation last month to ENYYSA leagues most affected by Hurricane DONATION MADE - The Honors Club at the Ammerman Campus of Suffolk Sandy. The CJSL, SIYSL and LIJSL each received County Community College recently raised funds for Long Island Cares in Hauppauge. The students also volunteered their time on December 17th to package food items and $3,333. jackets for those in need. These items will be shipped to local food pantries all across Long Island.
