The Power Of Words s South Huntington’s Silas Wood 6th graders prepared for the visit of Commissioner King, they reviewed videos of his speeches and prior school visits. The students found many refrains and important words that Commissioner King used with great frequency. Because words have power, the students were asked to illustrate his power words so that they could create a school quilt. The students were then able to “stitch” Dr. King’s words together into this quilt.

A few weeks ago, my friend and I got the bright inspiration to walk all the way to Kismet from the Fire Island Lighthouse. I had been told it wasn’t an extremely long journey, and, timed just right in the early fall, would be quite lovely and scenic. Well, it was certainly scenic. Considering that there is basically one route from the Lighthouse leading into the Fire Island communities, one would think there would be no need for directions. But, just for kicks, I decided to put the address of the restaurant we planned to go to – Surf’s Out – into my phone and ask the famous Siri for directions. Immediately, my trusty little map dropped a pin at our current location, as well as another quite some distance away. At first glance, it seemed rather far, but we paid no mind. We just started walking. Pretty soon, we saw the sign telling us we were entering Kismet Village. Okay, we were on the right track. My friend thought she remem-

bered that there was a particular cross street we would need to make a left turn on, in order to head north to the Bay side of the Island, where the restaurants were located. Not quite certain which road it was, we figured surely there would be a sign. Oh, there was a sign all right! The next marker we came across welcomed us to the Village of Saltaire – in other words, we were now exiting Kismet. Hmmm… interesting. And yet there remained the little glowing dot on my phone, still way off in the distance. Something was very wrong. As I zoomed in further, I started to faintly make out the words “Ocean Beach” stamped on the map. Ocean Beach?! As in that town I had not too long ago take a ferry to?! I didn’t even know you could walk there if you wanted to! And who in their right mind would want to? Uh-oh, we were seriously off track. At that point, short of knocking on a local resident’s door – many of whom had already packed it in for the season – the only other

passers-by consisted of bicyclists zooming by – and deer…lots of deer, galloping across the street, darting from one yard to the other presumably in search of something to munch on. Ah, but then, out of the blue came an older couple, clearly local residents out for a leisurely afternoon stroll. “Excuse me, but can you tell us if there is a restaurant near here?” my friend inquired. “Oh yes,” the man said. Oh good, I thought. “But not here…” Uhoh. “It’s way back in Kismet,” he gestured in the direction from which we had just come. Oh boy. “How far, exactly?” “Oh, it’s a good hike,” his wife said apologetically. We politely thanked them and began the long process of retracing our steps, finally arriving at our intended destination – approximately 3.5 miles and 1 hour and 20 minutes after departing. All for the experience of walking to Kismet. It was an experience all right. Suffice it to say, Siri will not be invited on our next journey.

Creative Expressions A Lost Mind The Gallery

Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!

By: Jade Nussbaum, Seaford

I feel as if my mind is lost I’m in a room all alone I feel that no one is here with me Just the wall and the sky above I want to sing a soft-spoken song But there is no one to sing along I hear a beat inside of me And a tune inside my head But with nothing around I’m a loner To myself I keep the tune But no one ever heard the song Just my mind that is now gone

Crafty Comments By: Toni Cook Sorting beads, buttons ‘n bows to glue Just ain’t what I prefer to do Quilting, crocheting ‘n perling too Really put me in quite a stew My nimbleless fingers do not respond To needles, thimbles, or knitting of yarn Just hand me a pen with subject to ponder I’ll dash off a poem of which I’m much fonder

What’s better than a night of laughter, good food and friends? Grab your friends and grab a ticket to Huntington Arts Council’s Comedy Cabaret featuring comedy improv duo Isaacs & Baker. This fundraising dinner & event will be held October 4th at the newly renovated Thatched Cottage in Centerport. “Fundraising is an essential part of the non-profit livelihood, so we want to have laugh while we raise money for a great charity, Huntington Arts Council,” says Andrea Maire, Huntington Arts Council Board President “Everybody loves a good comedian, and we have two.” Discovered at the Got Talent? Long Island showcase, Isaacs & Baker's totally unique comedy experience was an immediate audience favorite. Now it's your turn to laugh, because with Isaacs & Baker, you don't just watch the show; you're a part of it. Their fast-paced, off the cuff show is based entirely on the event theme or vibe of the audience. Audience members shout out ideas and suggestions, so there's no predicting the punch line and no two shows are the same. This special ticketed event begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails and buffet dinner, followed by the show that will have audience members laughing in the aisles. Tickets are $40 HAC Members, $50 nonmembers, and tables of 10 are $400. Tickets may be purchased by online at http://huntingtonarts.org/co medy.cfm (a handling fee will apply), by mail to their office or in person at our Huntington Arts Council office, 213 Main Street in Huntington, from Monday through Fri day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sponsorships are still available to support this Island-wide event. Please call Diana Cherryholmes, Executive Director of the Huntington Arts Council at 631.271.8423 or e-mail dcherryholmes@huntington arts.org. The Huntington Arts Council is a legitimate 501c3 not-for-profit organization and all proceeds from this event will benefit its programs. 244129N1003

Dear Readers,

I love October! It’s the month that kicks off the holiday season with wonderful charity events from my favorite rescue organizations. Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue has planned a great evening. Money 2. that’s raised from ticket sales will go to the life saving efforts of this worthy organization. Can you think of a better way to spend your money on a night Golden Retriever Rescue: out? Here are the details. 516.578.3803 The Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue Inc. will host its Shop & Dine & MAGGIE female Golden Laugh Fundraiser on Thursday, October 18th, at the Holbrook Country Club, JAMIE 700 Patchogue-Holbrook Road in Holbrook, from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a femaile Golden Retriever buffet dinner, cake, coffee and soda, as well as a cash bar. You will have the opportunity to purchase Pawhaus Jewels, purses, Tastefully Simple products, unique holiday gifts, teas, Avon and more. There will also be psychic readings, a caricaturist, a dog slide show, a Chinese Auction, and comedian Moody McCarthy is scheduled to perform. The cost is $50 per person by October 4th (payable to LIGRR). 3. The psychic was a big hit last year! She was booked through the entire evening. Be sure to sign up early for your spot. The caricaturist was also busy throughout the evening. Some people sat for their pictures, while others brought dog and family pictures for the caricaturist to draw so they could give them as holiday gifts. The cost is $15 – one person or dog, $25 – 2 people or dogs, $10 – each additional person or dog. 4. Your $50 ticket includes a buffet dinner and supports Golden Rescue. Please Little Shelter: mail your tax deductible check to LIGRR, P.O. Box 566, Plainview, NY 11803, 631.368.8770 by October 4th. Include $30 additional if you would like a psychic reading. Huntington Station. Spectators lined New York Avenue to show support for the community and hundreds attended the festival at the Northwest LIRR commuter parking lot. Legislator D’Amaro has served on the planning committee for the event since its inception. In recognition of their many contributions to the Huntington Station community, Brad Rosen and his family, owneroperators of the new Station Sports on Depot

Support Group Launched The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) has long been at the forefront of providing alcohol and drug education and treatment referrals and addiction services to individuals. Now, the Long Island-

based non-profit will offer an additional resource to families who are dealing with the loss of a loved one due to addiction in the form of new Grief and Loss Support Groups in both Nassau and Suffolk. The Grief and Loss Support Groups will start

this Saturday, September 29th and meet weekly from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in LICADD’s Mineola (114 Old Country Road, Suite 114) and Ronkonkoma (2805 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 26) offices. Participants will have an opportunity to connect

Culture Of Kindness

with others, while receiving the skills and support necessary to understand and move through the grieving process. “Losing an addicted child, sibling, parent, spouse or any family member to an overdose, car crash, or in any other way is extremely traumatic; a life is lost and in its place are often feelings of guilt, anger and grief,” explained LICADD Clinical Director Steven Chassman, LCSW. “We want anyone experiencing

such a loss to know that they are not alone and that healing is possible,” he added. Every 19 minutes, one American dies of an accidental overdose. “Those figures are reflected on Long Island, and our communities have been devastated by this senseless loss of life,” said Dr. Jeffrey L. Reynolds, LICADD’s Executive Director. “We are working hard to prevent fatal overdoses through prevention, education and direct

access to addiction services, but until the fatalities are dramatically reduced, this support group will be available to anyone who has lost a loved one.” To participate in LICADD’s Grief and Loss Support Group, or to get more information about the resources LICADD offers to individuals and families who have a loved one who is dealing with substance abuse or addiction, please call 516.747.2606, or visit www.licadd.com.

UCP Grant Awarded

Students of the Elwood Union Free School District are working to create a culture of kindness within their schools. At Harley Avenue Primary School, students in kindergarten through second grade learned how to be an ally to a friend in need during the interactive musical performance Sticks and Stones, presented by artist and educator Lyle Cogen. At James H. Boyd Intermediate School, students explored the

categories of bullying and the roles of bully, victim and bystander during an interactive theatrical presentation of Soren Bennick’s The Power of One. Both presentations were made possible by the schools’ PTAs. In both performances, students witnessed examples of the various forms of bullying, explored the feelings involved with bullying and took part in role-playing activities. This enabled them to literally put

themselves in someone else’s shoes and learn how to handle a variety of uncomfortable situations. Students learned that they had the power to make the difference. Fourth-grader Sean, who played the role of a victim in a playground bullying scenario, explained, “It felt lonely to be the only one picked on while other kids (bystanders) watched and did nothing. It’s important to say something if you see someone being bullied.”

United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk. Inc. (UCP Suffolk) was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Chicago based CME Group Community Foundation. The grant funds will be used to purchase and install a SMART Board and Satalight Interactive Learning Station at The Children’s Center at UCP Suffolk in Commack. The Satalight Interactive Learning Station features an interactive, height adjustable whiteboard with a special SMART Board projector and touch display surface. The Station’s innovative and flexible design makes it

easily accessible for children with physical challenges. The addition of this technology will enable the Children Center’s staff to have more one-to-one interaction with the students and help them become more independent through learning and problem solving. “The integration of this new technology will bring the outside world into the classroom for children with disabilities and enable our students to communicate and see the world in ways that were not previously possible,” explained Sherri Glazer, The Children’s Center Principal and Director of

Education Services. The Children’s Center at UCP Suffolk operates Early Intervention, Preschool and School – age programs tailored to meet the physical, cognitive and emotional needs of children with disabilities from birth to 21 years of age. “Thanks to the support of CME Group Community Foundation, we will be able to provide new learning opportunities for the students at the Children’s Center and help create Life Without Limits for people with disabilities,” said Stephen H. Friedman, UCP Suffolk President & CEO.
