Family Earth Day Expo
R
esidents brought boxes of documents for shredding and old computers and televisions for recycling as Huntington marked Earth Day 2013 on April 20th at the Family Earth Day Expo in the parking lot of Town Hall. Throughout the morning-long event, a steady stream of residents brought boxes of documents to the Safety Shred truck for destruction and e-waste to the Town’s Environmental Waste Management truck of recycling.

The Paths We Choose By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that. Ironic, isn’t it? But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions
among Journalism’s elite which reignites that fire – that passion to make a difference with the written word, the spoken word, photography… whatever the specific medium might be. During the course of the evening, the question arose as to what, specifically, qualified someone to be a Journalist. After all, anyone can blog, anyone can utilize social media to share their thoughts and opinions on all things important (or trivial, as the case may be). So where lies the distinction? The joke was made that, “Journalists have the ability to be fired.” This is actually true, to a degree. Those whose opinions are not solicited have no real accountability to the
public. Of course, they should regardless. But in reality, it is the almighty dollar which dictates our purpose in life more than any sense of real responsibility. It’s a shame, as many of my fellow college classmates have long since abandoned the Journalism field for so-called loftier, more lucrative pursuits. But what of the fire? The motivation to make a difference? Not to mention, the four years of schooling at a rather expensive private university…But to each his/her own. For me, all it takes is one evening of stimulating conversation to quell any doubts that this is the field for me. Proud to be a Journalist, always.

Lisa Burch, North Shore-LIJ’s director of sustainability and social responsibility, said the award recognizes North Shore-LIJ’s commitment to the community. “We’re not just about providing care to the patients who walk through our doors but also helping those who cannot get to the care they require,” she said. van that has made regularly scheduled visits to areas affected by the super storm, including Broad Channel in Queens, Staten Island and the Long Island communities of Long Beach and Lindenhurst. The van began treating people in Babylon this month. The North ShoreLIJ Health System received a $350,000 grant from the Robin Hood Relief Fund in February which will enable the van’s medical team to continue treating people through August. The mobile van is staffed with medical professionals, administrative support personnel and a driver. Patients have been treated for a range of illnesses and injuries, including upper respiratory infections, minor lacerations and maintenance of chronic and acute illnesses. In addition, the van’s medical staff provides flu and tetanus vaccinations. All of the care has been delivered free of charge, regardless of whether patients are insured. “We’re providing a valuable service to people during a difficult time in their lives and what has proven to be a continued and extended challenging period,” said Maria Torroella Carney, MD, North Shore-LIJ’s director of communitybased geriatrics in the department of medicine, who leads the mobile van project. “It’s very rewarding to assist these residents as they put their lives back together. We’re bringing quality healthcare resources from the health system directly to their communities.”

By: Tyler Cianciulli As any prospective college student knows, SAT scores and your Grade Point Average are not the only factors that play a role in the admissions process. It is said that colleges like a well-rounded student. The term “well-rounded” is often thrown about without thought, which raises the question: what exactly is an extracurricular? Most colleges would define the term “extracurricular” as something done or happening outside the normal curriculum of a school or college. This means anything from Archery to volunteering at a Zoo. Extracurricular activities don’t have to be
a chore; finding those that suit your interest are a good way to make friends, explore careers and ultimately help attain your goals. So what do you love to do? Really, anything counts as an extracurricular! Fishing, hiking, boating, constructing and drawing all help you as a person, and as an applicant. Even playing the guitar has hidden benefits that any future college would love to see. Most universities or colleges prefer an abundance of extracurricular activities, and some even base 25% of their decision on these items. It is a good idea to get an early start. One would advise freshmen to begin compiling their list of
sports, clubs, volunteer hours and passions now. It is one of those things essential to your success and maximizing the caliber of school you or your child plan on attending. County Executive Steven Bellone and the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Citizens Advisory Panel today announced that applications for “Round 11” Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Grants are available. A pool of $250,000 is available for partial funding of capital projects located in or adjacent to downtown areas on municipallyowned property. Applicants must be organizations that represent a downtown area and who partner with their local municipality. Organizations that represent downtown areas including business improvement districts, chambers of commerce, civic associations, historical societies, beautification societies, and local development corporations. Towns or villages who partner with
a community organization are required to pass resolutions supporting the project on which the two entities partner. Projects must be capital in nature and have a significant and sustainable impact that enhances economic activity. “Providing grant funding through this program encourages local organizations to partner with their municipality and find ways to enhance public lands, improve the vitality of business districts, and contribute to walkable communities and bustling downtowns,” said Bellone. Volunteer Appreciation In recognition of National Volunteer Week, St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center in collaboration with St. Catherine of Siena Hospital Medical Center held an appreciation event to honor their volunteers. This event was attended by over 80 individuals who were thanked by the staff and administration for their time and dedication. Students of the hospital’s Healthcare Career Exploration and Internship Program crafted beautiful banners which displayed the theme “Coming together in unity to help the community.” Additionally, Nicole Heller of Cake Chaos by Nicole donated 100 beautifully decorated cupcakes for the event. As an added token of appreciation, the residents made napkins in the shape of flowers to fill with candy kisses to be given to each volunteer. It was a day of giving back to these wonderful, selfless, generous individuals who give of their time to the residents and patients each day.

Honoring The Earth Second-grade students of Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District took part in the Annual Harley Avenue Earth Day Celebration. The program was conducted under the direction of Harley music teacher Christina Long, with piano accompaniment by local piano teacher
Marge Margolf. Throughout the performance, students recited the poem Happy Earth Day, written by Harley kindergarten teacher Martha DeMartini, which outlined the environmental issues faced by all and the things that can be done to help save the planet. Students
also sang a series of songs that celebrated the earth, including It’s A Small World, What A Wonderful World and Garden Song. Displaying colorful signs and singing cheerfully, the second-graders brought awareness to issues such as pollution and the need to recycle.
ART STUDENT HONORED - Assemblyman Andrew Raia recently extended his congratulations to Quinn Pace, a local Northport High School art student, for being selected to represent New York State in a national flag display in Texas. Pace’s flag design was chosen to be flown at the National Art Education Association’s Annual Conference in Fort Worth, Texas with the other national flag winners from across the U.S.

TALKING GOVT - Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci recently visited with Boy Scout Troop 218 of Huntington Station. During his visit, Lupinacci discussed the role government plays in their lives, their rights and responsibilities as citizens and how the lessons learned from the scouting program will remain important in their future. Residents brought boxes of documents for shredding and old computers and televisions for recycling as Huntington marked Earth Day 2013 on Saturday, April 20th at the Family Earth Day Expo in the parking lot of Town Hall. Council Members Mark Cuthbertson and Susan Berland joined major sponsor Covanta and participating vendors, including Trader Joe’s of Commack, in welcoming adults and children to the event, sponsored by Councilman Cuthbertson and Supervisor Frank P. Petrone. Covanta co-sponsored
a rechargeable battery collection program with Call2Recyle. Trader Joe’s offered a reusable tote bag in exchange for plastic ones. Other exhibits spotlighted solar energy, demonstrated organic gardening and how compost is made and allowed children to touch and experience a variety of sea specimens. Throughout the morning-long event, a steady stream of residents brought boxes of documents to the Safety Shred truck for destruction and e-waste to the Town’s Environmental Waste Management truck of recycling.
For a number of years, the Town has been accepting electronic waste at the town’s Recycling Center at 641 New York Avenue, and last year residents delivered 162 tons of e-waste, including televisions, computers, printers, cell phones, modems and other computer peripherals. This February, the Town began curbside e-waste pickup. Residents call 631.351.3239 and make an appointment; the Environmental Waste Management Department will give them a date on which they put their e-waste out at the curb.

Members of the Harborfields school community enthusiastically took part in the Walk for a Wish fundraising drive, which culminated in the Walk for a Wish on April 13th at Harborfields High School. The annual event benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Through this fundraiser, the district has raised more than $91,000 over the course of the last six years, helping to make it possible for children’s wishes to be granted through the foundation. All of the donations collected for the walk will be used to grant the wish of Talia, a child from neighboring Northport who struggles with a serious illness. The collective efforts of the community will allow for Talia and her family to take a trip to Disney World,

something young Talia has always wanted to do. This year’s event saw the greatest turnout since the event’s inception six years ago. It was co-coordinated by teachers Diane Brown, Emily Gutheil and Kathleen Taylor, with support from the Acts of Kindness Committee at Washington Drive Primary School and the Walk for a Wish Committee at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, as well as the two schools’ PTAs. Harborfields students organized fundraising activities of their own to contribute to the event, which included holding bake sales, running lemonade stands and completing extra chores to donate allowance money. “This is always such
a special community event,” said third-grade teacher Noreen Paccione. “However, this year seems to have had an even greater effect on everyone. Throughout the district, there has been such an overwhelming sense of community. In addition to the students’ efforts, teachers and staff members have volunteered their time, services and money to contribute to the cause, setting a wonderful example to the students they teach.” This year’s fundraising drive raised a total of $21,565. Due to its overwhelming success, not only will Talia’s wish be granted, but other children’s wishes will be fulfilled as well.

Outstanding Chapter Leadership It is with great pleasure that Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society announces Stella Miller, HOBAS’ Chapter President, as recipient of the Norman Stotz Award for Outstanding Chapter Leadership. Stella recently received her award for her extraordinary volunteer service at the Spring Audubon New York Council meeting, in March 2013 in Saratoga Springs, NY. Stella joined the HOBAS board in 2006. She books monthly members’ programs with prestigious speakers who have presented programs on local and global conservation and environmental topics. Stella designed and maintains the HOBAS’ website and Facebook page. These forums have helped
to bring public awareness to HOBAS programs as well as some of the initiatives that Stella implemented, such as “Save Our Raptors” and “Cats Belong Indoors.” In addition, she was instrumental in the campaign to preserve Plum Island and created a Facebook page and online petition for the Plum Island Coalition. Stella’s commitment to educating children about the natural world has been demonstrated by her collaborative initiatives and outreach efforts. She has developed regular children’s programs for youngsters ages 3 and above. The Audubon Youth Outreach Committee Stella formed, the first of its kind in the area, was designed to engage teenagers in meaningful community
outreach projects and her “Bringing Teens and Seniors Together” bridges the generation gap through birding and nature-based programs. She has spearheaded the restoration grassland project at Underhill Preserve and coordinates other community volunteer opportunities such as invasive species pulls held at Shu Swamp and Stillwell Woods. Stella is an outstanding leader who is willing to network, collaborate, and share her knowledge, love and passion of the natural world with many. HOBAS extends its gratitude to Stella for her dedication to HOBAS, Audubon, and the environment and congratulates her on receiving the Norm Stotz Award.

Students made a pulp by mixing the saturated paper materials with a blender and pouring the pulp into large bins. They scooped the pulp with a sieve and shaped the
“paper” on towels to dry. The newly made paper will be used in class to create future projects. “This is a wonderful way to celebrate Earth Day,” remarked Ms. Paccione. “The students enjoy getting their hands dirty, and through the process they are able to better grasp the concepts that are so important to helping the planet.”

Heart Healing Walk The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 19th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. Environmental Exhibit
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone marked the forty third anniversary of Earth Day today, unveiling an exhibit honoring one of Suffolk County’s most environmentally sensitive and significant areas, the Long Island Pine Barrens. The Suffolk County Historical Society has installed an exhibit, Barren and Waste Land: Long Islanders and the Pine Barrens in the lobby of the H. Lee Dennison county office building in Hauppauge. “Although first created in 1997, this exhibition remains relevant today to the environment and culture of our region,” said County Executive Steve
Bellone. “The Long Island Pine Barrens is a rich ecosystem that Suffolk County is working hard to protect. This exhibit will help visitors to understand and appreciate the Pine Barren region more fully.” The exhibit focuses on one of the great natural resources of Long Island shown in its historic context. On display are historic interpretations and images of the Pine Barrens region, including Camp Upton and the once booming cranberry industry of years gone by. Throughout history, the Long Island Pine Barrens has meant different thing to different cultures and segments of the community. To Native Americans,
the Pine Barrens was an ecosystem rich in resources, to be used in meeting daily living needs. European settlers used these resources too, although often in a manner that had destructive impacts. “The purpose of this exhibition is to provide an interpretation of the relationship between various human cultures and the resources and landscapes that collectively comprise the Long Island Pine Barrens,” said Suffolk County Historian Peter Fox Cohalan. The exhibit runs through June 2013.

Forty high school juniors and seniors from Brentwood UFSD, Copiague UFSD, East Hampton UFSD, Freeport UFSD, Glen Cove City SD, Hampton Bays UFSD, Long Beach City SD, Longwood CSD, Malverne UFSD, Patchogue-Medford UFSD, Port Washington UFSD, Riverhead CSD, Roosevelt UFSD, Sachem CSD, South Huntington UFSD, and Southampton UFSD demonstrated their enthusiasm at the 23rd Annual Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PR/ HYLI). Developing leadership skills, fostering responsible citizenship, and gaining an understanding of the New York State legislative process are just a few of the goals of the institute. The Long Island Regional Bilingual Education - Resource Network (LI RBE-RN) at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES), along with the Senate/ Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force, the New York State Education Department, Questar III BOCES, the Board of Education of the City of New York, and Somos Inc., co-sponsored and coordinated this three-day event. At the gala banquet 30 scholarships were awarded, nine of the recipients hailed from the ESBOCES LI RBE-RN delegation.
