cookie decorating, face painting, balloon animals, health screenings, breastfeeding support, plus free food samples and mini-massages for adults. A clown from the Big Apple Circus will entertain, and beauty queen Amy Marchany, crowned Ms. Royal America 2011-2012, will attend. Long Island Parent Magazine, Your Local Kids Source, Natural Awakenings LI, All About Kids, YOLO Yogurt, and Hulafrog Town of Hempstead sponsor this year’s All Kids Fair. The Complaint Dept. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan They say the customer is always right, and yet… I recently had the pleasure of contacting the DMV regarding an error in the address printed on my registration. Silly me, I had sent the renewal in by snail mail rather than utilize their online services for this one thing, and then had proceeded to wait approximately three weeks for my new registration sticker to arrive. Relieved as I was to eventually receive it in time, something made me examine the information extra closely – and there it was, the typo. As per the instructions on the form, I immediately contacted my local DMV call center to report the mistake, figuring a new one would need to be issued. After waiting on hold for, oh,
about 20 minutes or so, I was finally transferred to a human – who promptly transferred me to yet another “department” (the complaint department?) for further assistance. More hold music. At least another 15 minutes spent waiting. And waiting... And then, finally, a voice came on the line. I explained the issue. Silence. “Hello?” I said, thinking perhaps the line had gone dead. “Yeah. So what’s the problem? You got it, didn’t you?” was the reply I was met with. “Um, yes, I received it, but the address is incorrect… and it says to contact you to correct it…?” I was beyond perplexed at having to explain any further at this point. “Yeah well, it’s correct on your license, and all they really pay attention to is your name and street number – the town doesn’t matter.” Okay then. “Ok,” I said, “Well then I guess
can you at least change it internally in your system, just so it’s correct for the future?” A giant sigh of exasperation came through the receiver. “Yeah. I guess so. You want the typo fixed?” (Wasn’t that what I just said?) “Um, yes, if it’s not too much trouble.” (Which, apparently, it was.) I then heard the pounding of fingers on the keyboard. I don’t think it would have been possible for this woman to make more noise typing three letters if she tried. “Is that all?” Oh yes, that was all. Why would I ever choose to prolong this conversation for even another second? Honestly, if the hold time wasn’t so extensive, I would have hung up and called back just to reach a different customer service rep. But, with my luck, this woman was probably the only one on duty that day.

Clinic Set of baseball to America’s youth using positive sports images and personalities. “For many children, this is a unique opportunity to learn the right way to play baseball and to develop the skills that may someday make them major leaguers,” Supervisor Petrone said. “We are honored that the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association has chosen Greenlawn Park for their only New York-area clinic this year.” The players will teach baseball fundamentals - throwing, catching,
batting, base running, fielding and pitching - in a multi-station format, including a station called The Greatest Save that focuses on personal safety, life skills and making positive decisions. Following the instruction, the players will sign autographs for the participants. The free clinic is open to children ages 6-16. Art Exploration Third-grade students of Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently had an opportunity to learn about Aboriginal culture during a visit from artist Chris Pitkin. Mr. Pitkin, a native Australian, shared with students some aspects of the Australian culture, including the music and art of the Aboriginal people, the first natives of Australia. “In third grade,
our students study communities around the world, including those in Australia,” remarked teacher Christine Brooks. “This visit provided students with a wonderful opportunity to experience firsthand some of the aspects of a culture they would have only had the chance to read about in class.” As the students learned, the Aborigines do not have a written language. They share their history
through art by means of “dot paintings” made from the natural resources of the Red Centre, the vast, arid area of the Outback named for its red sands. They use symbols to develop stories and create music using the didgeridoo, an instrument constructed from a tree that has been hollowed by termites. After exploring examples, students went on to create their own paintings in the Aboriginal dot style.

UCP Donation Elwood Middle School students in the Elwood Union Free School District recently took part in the United Cerebral Palsy’s Annual Trivia Challenge. Participants raised over $2,750 in donations for this worthy cause.
The funds will go towards strengthening UCP’s daily and residential programs and will help to provide vital health care and therapeutic services to individuals with disabilities. Students of Elwood
Middle School have taken part in this program for many years, having raised $47,762.55 since 1996 for the cause. This year’s winning group of students correctly answered 73 of the 100 questions given.

The Town of Huntington’s Annual Tulip Festival will take place on Sunday, May 5th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Heckscher Park in Huntington. Autism is a debilitating mental disorder that will affect 1 in every 88 children born this year. That means in 2013, in New York State alone, nearly 3,000 children will be diagnosed with Autism. For high school students like myself, this really hits close to home. For the second consecutive year, Friends of Port Rowing held the annual Row for Autism. Waking up at 4 am., hundreds of students, parents and coaches flocked to Port Washington to take part in one of the most unique fundraisers ever to hit Long Island. Approximately one
dozen of Long Island’s finest rowing teams fundraised and competed on April 13th in an effort to raise awareness and help find a cure for this lifelong ailment. Each Rowing Team fundraised hundreds of dollars for the cause by selling items that were created to spread knowledge about the effects and treatment of Autistic children. When the donations had concluded, the teams raced. This 1750 meter course was designed to test both our minds and our endurance. As a whole we were united, but secretly everyone wanted to bring home a gold medal. Unfortunately, my team,

The students of Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District recently received a special visit from Michelle Knudsen, author of Library Lion and many other popular books. St. John the Baptist DHS, Ms. Knudsen discussed didn’t bring home a medal, with students some of but we still fared well. My boat, the Varsity 8-man placed 4th, competitively. Many of our other boats also did well. For the second year in a row, a group of high school kids merged against a disorder that will hopefully not be an issue in the future. Being of able minds and bodies, we did what we knew best and helped to promote knowledge and resolution to an issue that affects everyone. With any luck, our work, perseverance and donations will help to bring an end to a cause that influences so many.

According to a recent study issued by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, widely-held views that there is a suicide spike during the winter holidays is untrue. Instead, suicide and suicide attempts actually spike during the spring/summer months. “We know that this finding is counter-intuitive to commonly-held beliefs,” states Theresa Buhse, Associate Executive Director, Long Island Crisis Center. “However, by correcting this myth, we can be more pro-active in being suicide aware and preventive if we know the reality.” The Crisis Center urges everyone to be aware of the possible “signs of suicide:” · Sadness and crying · Increase or decrease in sleeping patterns · Boredom and listlessness

(NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study— commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds. “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan
Bellows, incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. “Dogs’ mouths are certainly not cleaner than a human’s. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.” The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth. And while smelly breath in pets is common, pet owners who believe this is normal may be missing the signs of poor oral health or potential dental disease,”
Dr. Bellows said. A Healthy Mouth Is Key A healthy mouth is essential to the overall well-being of pets, but misguided information about pet oral health can affect more than just your pet’s mouth. For proper pet oral health, veterinarians advise daily brushing or giving of Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC)?approved dental treats, and at least annual oral exams by a veterinarian with professional cleanings as recommended. “Pet owners who are knowledgeable about their furry companions’ oral health will avoid the pitfalls of commonly held myths and enable the best care for everyone’s wellbeing,” said Dr. Bellows. mile walk through scenic Port Jefferson and Belle Terre. They walk to support women with breast cancer. Autism is a debilitating mental disorder that will affect 1 in every 88 children born this year. That means in 2013, in New York State alone, nearly 3,000 children will be diagnosed with Autism. For high school students like myself, this really hits close to home. For the second consecutive year, Friends of Port Rowing held the annual Row for Autism. Waking up at 4 am., hundreds of students, parents and coaches flocked to Port Washington to take part in one of the most unique fundraisers ever to hit Long Island. Approximately one
dozen of Long Island’s finest rowing teams fundraised and competed on April 13th in an effort to raise awareness and help find a cure for this lifelong ailment. Each Rowing Team fundraised hundreds of dollars for the cause by selling items that were created to spread knowledge about the effects and treatment of Autistic children. When the donations had concluded, the teams raced. This 1750 meter course was designed to test both our minds and our endurance. As a whole we were united, but secretly everyone wanted to bring home a gold medal. Unfortunately, my team,
St. John the Baptist DHS, didn’t bring home a medal, but we still fared well. My boat, the Varsity 8-man placed 4th, competitively. Many of our other boats also did well. For the second year in a row, a group of high school kids merged against a disorder that will hopefully not be an issue in the future. Being of able minds and bodies, we did what we knew best and helped to promote knowledge and resolution to an issue that affects everyone. With any luck, our work, perseverance and donations will help to bring an end to a cause that influences so many.
