ighth-grade students of Elwood Middle School in the Elwood Union Free School District took part in the school’s annual Blue and White Night on February 13th.

Over 150 students participated in a series of competitions, including “Mr. Touchdown,” “Olympic Rings” and “Tricycle Races.” The event was sold out, with a packed audience in attendance cheering on the competitors who donned red, white and blue.

The SJB Wrestling Team made arrangements for team members to bring all donations to the parish outreach at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst.

The Wrestling Team had a great response and expects to make this part of the annual tournament tradition.

The team set up boxes in the school lobby area to collect from each team when they arrived for weigh in.

St. Johns had a multitude of parents and students ready to pack up the food items, and to transport them to the Parish. Boy’s Athletic Director Ralph Dalton said, “We thank Mrs. Routh and all the parents and wrestlers for organizing the collection and successfully distributing the food collected. It was a great day which combined sport and service.”

by Maria Aiello, the cast members worked tirelessly to ensure that this year’s production was flawless and enjoyable for audiences. The three evening performances featured Kyle Banks as the Beast and Christina

Dimitriou as Belle, the odd village girl held captive in the Beast’s castle in hopes of breaking the spell that altered his appearance and left him a recluse.

Also sharing the castle and the effects of the spell are a myriad of delightful characters, including Cogsworth and Lumiere, played by Daniel Schindlar and Ethan Felizzari, as well as Mrs. Potts and her son Chip, played by Emily McPherson and Noah Austin. These characters invite Belle to Be Their

Guest and attempt to make her feel welcome despite the Beast’s difficult temperament. An outstanding stage crew and a talented pit orchestra, directed by Karen Gellert, supported the cast.

“This show is a musical favorite for many people, and the students came through and gave nothing short of an exemplary performance,” remarked Ms. Nagle. “Ms. Aiello and I couldn’t be more proud of the students involved.”

Inspiration To Inmates Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco welcomed Marion LazanBlumenthal, author of the book Four Perfect Pebbles, to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverside yesterday.

Lazan, who was interned in a concentration camp in her youth, talked with incarcerated minors and several groups of men and women at the jail, about her early life and the holocaust experience.

Also in attendance were members of the Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force, including Dr. Francis Brisbane, Dean of SUNY’s School of Social Welfare and community volunteer, Liz Stokes, who had written to the author in the fall of 2012, and asked her to visit. Stokes

helps to moderate a selfhelp group and book club for incarcerated women at the Riverhead Correctional Facility.

DeMarco introduced Lazan at the gathering of approximately fifty inmates in the jail’s chapel.

He opened it up by saying: “I hope that you will listen, understand, and appreciate the message of hope, courage, and compassion that she will share with you today.”

Lazan spoke for approximately one hour, and at times paused to take questions or offer words of encouragement and hugs to some of the inmates who were visibly touched by her story. She reminded the group that, “No one is spared adversity. We all have issues to overcome.

Above all, don’t ever give up hope.” Two women and two teenage young men presented the author with four bouquets of flowers at the conclusion of her speech, symbolic of the “four perfect pebbles” in her book.

Following the event, DeMarco stated, “Incarceration isn’t easy, and while the experience of holocaust survivors was far more challenging and punitive than any American correctional setting, Marion’s story of survival and success resonated with our inmates.

She drove home the message that regardless of their present circumstances in life, they can have a very good life if they are determined enough to change its

Black History Month Celebration

An inspiring speech by a local county legislator and stirring musical performances by a Walt Whitman High School sophomore and local church groups marked Huntington’s 26th Annual Black History Month Celebration on Thursday, February 7th.

Dr. William Spencer, who represents the 18th District in the Suffolk County Legislature, emphasized in the keynote address the importance of education in achieving success and of helping people by being a good neighbor.

Dr. Spencer noted that a half century ago, at the height of the civil rights movement, education was viewed as a priority in the

path to success; today, he noted, only 18 percent of African-Americans have a college degree. “We, the People, need to re-dedicate ourselves to education,” he said.

Highlighting the musical performances was the impressive rendition of the Negro National Anthem sung by Kalif Omari Jones.

Fifteen-year-old Kalif, a sophomore at Walt Whitman High School, is a member of the New York City Collegiate Chorale who has performed at Carnegie Hall, with the Metropolitan Opera and on HBO. Musical selections were also performed by Peggie Primm and Will Floyd from the Feed the People

Ministry and the Voices of Faith Missionary Youth Choir under the direction of Minister Timothy Flythe. The Huntington Outreach Ministry, under the direction of the Rev. Jerry Artis and Pastor Bernadette Watkins, did a theatrical performance.

The invocation and benediction were delivered by the Rev. Larry Washington of the Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church.

Huntington Supervisor Frank. P. Petrone gave welcoming remarks to the audience at Jack Abrams Intermediate School. The members of the Town Council also spoke.

Teacher Of The Year

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci recently joined faculty, staff and students from the South Huntington Union Free School District (U.F.S.D.) to honor the school’s 2013 Teacher of the Year recipient Rufus Shepard.

Lupinacci, who previously served as a member of the South Huntington School Board, presented Mr. Shepard with an Assembly Citation in his honor.

“The best educators are those whose impact is felt not only in their classrooms but also through the life lessons

they pass along to their students,” said Lupinacci.

“Mr. Shepard’s work in the classroom and beyond highlights the very best of what an educator can offer his students. Students of Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District enjoyed Special Person Day on February 13th.

The pre-Valentine’s Day celebration allowed students to invite those people in their lives whom they deem special to visit the school and join them in some unique activities.

The children’s projects included designing a wrapper for the chocolate gift they presented to their guests and creating handmade cards.

When kindergartner Nora was asked who her special person was and why she chose him, she remarked, “I chose my Pop Pop as my special person because I really

like him!” She and her grandfather along with the others in attendance, took photographs together at the various “Special Person Photo Spots” set up around the school.

It was the perfect opportunity for proud students to give a tour of their school and show off their work to the special people in their lives.

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern presented proclamations to Diana Cotrone and Kelsey Heyne, who earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting.

Diana’s project “Beauty Within: Mega Makeover,” was inspired by her late grandmother, affectionately known as “GaGa.” Diana visited the East Neck Nursing Home, interviewed residents about their family histories and published a newsletter for residents. She also hosted a makeover day, did

crafts with the residents, made goodie bags and invited a guest speaker to brighten the residents’ day.

Kelsey’s project was to raise awareness of childhood cancer and raise funds for children with cancer.

Kelsey’s sister Sarah was diagnosed with cancer at age 9, and she was inspired by her sister’s battle to help children with cancer. She organized an event to raise awareness, brought a Nurse-Practitioner from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to speak, discussed sibling issues

and introduced the “Locksof Love” program. The troop also made get-well cards and three quilts for children with cancer.

“I am proud to honor Diana and Kelsey as they receive the Girl Scout Gold Award,” Legislator Stern said.

“Their projects demonstrate their deep commitment to community and I am sure they will continue to make their families, the Girl Scouts and our entire community proud. I wish them every success in the future.”

According to data collected by the New York State Office for the Aging, social model adult day programs suppot cognitive, physical and social functioning, resulting in delayed nursing home placement often for 24 months or more.

With the grant support, Day Haven will expand the square footage of program space. The new space will provide an additional program room, a handicapped accessible bathroom with shower and hair salon capacity, and a caregiver support conference room where families can meet with Day Haven staff.

Day Haven Adult Day Services, with centers in Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma, provides day time care, professional supervision, and assistance with activities of daily living for frail older adults and individuals with dementia who are living at

home in the community.

Day Haven also provides caregiver services such as free support groups, educational events, and information referral services for families caring for a frail older adult or individual with Alzheimer’s disease.

Day Haven Adult Day Services, a program of The Community Program Centers of Long Island, will expand its services in Ronkonkoma for frail older adults, individuals with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia, and family caregivers. The expansion is supported by a recent $20,000 grant from the Knapp Swezey Foundation and a $5,000 grant from The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

Day Haven’s Director, Elizabeth A. Geary, states, “There is documented need for more social model adult day programs serving the increasing number of frail elders and those with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia.” Social model programs are recognized as a cost-effective model of care for older adults requiring supervision and assistance with activities of daily living as a result of a physical or cognitive deficit such as dementia.

day, capture the moment… live each day to the fullest.

You just never know what may be around the corner.

Certainly, there are times when something positive is on the horizon; surprises need not always portend tragedy and aggravation. It just seems that, on the whole, we as a society tend to take our lives – and those most important to us – for granted, never anticipating a day when this sense of contentment (read: complacency) might be turned upside down.

What can we do to prepare for this eventuality? Well, nothing and everything – all at the same time. There are those circumstances which reach far beyond our control;

the key is to take the given situation and make the most of it, and to move forward having learned something about ourselves. If this means taking more time to appreciate the little things in life…or savoring each moment with those we love… or simply reaching toward a long-unrealized goal… this is progress. This is positive.

This is appreciation.

This is not to say we will not each continually be faced with new obstacles each and every day – some minor, some life-changing – but at the very least, we will be better prepared to deal with them.

Carpe Diem always…

Those who seize the day are those who have few regrets.
